Summary
After Phoenix is disbarred, instead of becoming a piano- and poker-playin' hobo, he tracks down Shelly de Killer and takes him up on his offer to become his apprentice, the one he mentioned while on the stand in 2-4. Phoenix learns the art of assassination, getting ready to become the heir of the de Killer line. His first solo hit? No other than a childhood friend, of course.

Such an interesting fic. I didn't expect Miles to have been the one to hire a hit on himself to see Phoenix again (honestly, reminds me of Goku with Hit in Super). Phoenix also faces conflict here, as he can't turn down a job without disgracing his mentor and the de Killer name but he also does not want to kill Miles. The tension here was done very well. Miles, literally facing his back to Phoenix, asking Phoenix if he'll kill him, Miles tearing up when he thinks Phoenix will actually kill him for money, Miles asking why Phoenix left, and both of them apologising, Phoenix when he drops the knife and can't kill Miles, and Miles apologising when he drops his phone and can't bring himself to call the police to report Phoenix. Very complex feelings here about each other. I loved Miles wanting Phoenix to fuck him. Miles helping Phoenix to escape following the botched job, with a fake passport, as payback for saving him, was unexpected but sweet. Miles must have missed Phoenix a lot to do this. I suppose Miles also wanted Phoenix to escape from the unsavoury job of being an assassin.
I loved this bit:
“So if I held you by knifepoint,” Phoenix said, pressing the tip of the knife up against Edgeworth’s aquiline nose, “and said I was going to… have sex with you, you wouldn’t scream for the neighbors?”Edgeworth’s eyebrow quirked. “You wouldn’t need the knife,” he said, in a rare moment of candidness. “And I might scream, but it wouldn’t be for the neighbors.”
Phoenix sputtered.
