Chapter 1 - The Little Things

It had been a long time since Felicity was this nervous, she could probably count on one hand how many times she had been this sort of nervous.

Starting MIT as a 17years old? Check.

Going on a first date with Cooper? Check.

Moving to Starling City on her own? Check.

But thats it. 3 times were the only times Felicity Smoak has ever felt like she was going to be sick from nerve... well until now.

“Felicity?” Oliver’s voice had her turning on her heels, coming face to face with the man she needed to see but really didn’t want to see. But he was not alone. Walter Steele stood by his side. Felicity had never met Walter, well she had never met any of Oliver’s friends – at her request she might add.

She could only mount a small smile before Oliver turned around, “Walter, this is Felicity Smoak, Felicity, this is Walter Steele.” Felicity was some how able to extend her hand to Walter, shaking is. “Felicity works in our IT department.” Oliver’s comment was off handed, like it was normal for a lowly IT worker to be standing in the middle of the Vice Presidents office, and being on a first name basis to boot.

Walter nodded, “Ah yes, I have heard your name around…” Felicity flashed a glance to Oliver who was standing behind Walter, he shook his head slightly at her, indicating that it was not him who had mentioned her name. “…you’re supervisors have been very impressed in your work. They feel you are wasted in the IT department. You should apply for a role in Applied Sciences next time it arises.”

This comment made Felicity’s smile widen, “Oh thank you Mr. Steele. I appreciate the praise.” And with that Walter turned to Oliver and nodded, excusing himself.

This left Oliver and Felicity alone in his office. This was not common for them. His office was always off limits – also at her request, so for Felicity to be standing there, Oliver knew something was wrong.

“Felicity what’s wrong?” Oh how he knew her, how he could read her and how he could see right through her. Felicity opened her mouth to speak but he got in first, “And don’t say nothing…” He took her hand and lead her to the couch. Sitting by her side noting that she was stiff.

But he waited. And she stayed silent. “Felicity, I know you. I know that you can talk underwater but I also know when you are trying not to talk because you are trying not to ramble. What is going on?”

He was right, like always. He’d picked up on her tells almost instantly, when she was trying not to ramble or over talk she would rub her index finger or when she was nervous. Clearly something that she was doing at that moment because his hand rested on hers. Oh how she loved the feeling of his warm hand against hers.

She could do this…it wasn’t that hard to do.

Looking up at him to see him staring back at her…

She couldn’t do it.

“Do you remember the other night when you asked me to stay?”

How could he forget?

Oliver watched Felicity roll away from him, her bare back greeting him. This was just how it went. They’d fall into bed together and then after a few hours she would get up and leave. Most of the time it would be with a kiss on his cheek.

Most of the time he would feign being asleep, because he worried if she knew he was awake that kiss would not come.

But not tonight, his intrusive thoughts got the better of him, “Why don’t you stay?” Oliver could see the exact moment she understood his words, her shoulders dropping back and a slight pause in her movements. But then she recovered, turned to him and smiled, “I have to go, you know that.” And with that she turned away, got dressed and left.

And Oliver was right, he was awake which meant that that small kiss on his cheek did not come. Falling back onto his bed, Oliver groaned. He had a good thing going and now he had ruined it.

Oliver nodded at her, wondering where she was going with this line of questioning.

“We decided that this would just be what it was. No commitments and no restrictions….”

“You decided” He had to remind her because it really was a request of her but he respected her and would do as she asked.

Felicity raised her eyebrow but kept going, “Besides the point, why did you ask me to stay?”

He knew this was going to come and if Oliver was being honest with himself, he really had hoped that he would have a better answer, hell any answer for her. But it didn’t matter, the typical way their friendship went, someone else came knocking.

“Mr. Queen, sorry to interrupt, Mr. Merlyn is here to see you.” And as if on que Tommy rolled through the door, his smile wide, eyes bright. A cheer that Felicity could see was instantly infectious. Even though she and Oliver were deep in their own world, the smile he gave Tommy when he walked into the room was a smile that Felicity wished would never leave his face.

“Ollie man, we gotta go! My nephew’s 5th birthday awaits!”

Ah yes – did Felicity forget to mention that Oliver had a 5 year old son? He was the most adorable little thing she had ever seen, well at least in the photos that Oliver had plastered all over the office and his phone. His life revolved around that little boy.

Before Oliver could answer, Felicity was on her feet. “I should go…” But Oliver still had a hold of her hand, “Felicity wait…” But she shook her head. “Its ok, don’t worry about it.” How could she have forgotten? Oliver had told her he would be leaving at lunch time to pick Liam up so he and Tommy could spend his birthday with him. She shouldn’t have been there.

And she needed to leave.

With a short nod to Tommy as she rushed from the office, she could hear Oliver’s voice after her but she didn’t stop. As she waited for the elevator, Tommy’s light voice followed, “She’s hot…” Felicity had to scoff and smirk a little. She’d never met Tommy either but Oliver would light up talking about him, this comment sounded like a typical Tommy comment.

Food, Felicity needed food and a coffee. That’s what she needed and at this stage, she was already missing work so what the hell? Hitting the level 6 button and not the 11th she made her way to the café and with food and coffee in hand, Felicity found a nice warm, sunny spot to hit in while she collected her thoughts.

*******************************

“Daddy!” Liam had already jumped into his arms when seeing Oliver standing at the childcare door but instantly wiggled out of his grasp and jumped to Tommy. That kid was hooked on Tommy and Tommy the same. “Can you go now?”

With Liam all but dragging Oliver and Tommy from the childcare, he had already planned his day at the Zoo and was desperate for it to start.

Within a few hours of walking around the Zoo, Liam just wanted to play on the slide. Thankfully it gave Oliver and Tommy a short break and chance to catch their breath. Oliver had his focus on Liam the whole time, watching his son play and jump and run, a happy laughter echoing from his chest.

“So are you really going to make me ask?” There was an inward groan and a roll of the eye from Oliver, he had hoped Tommy would have left well enough alone but at the same time, he knew Tommy better than that.

“Just go ahead and say what you want to.” Oliver still didn’t take his eyes off Liam, always the watchful father.

“Who was she?” There would have been a time when Tommy would have had to be more specific with Oliver, a time when he’s have spent his nights with a different woman and that questioned would have been too hard to answer.

But Oliver knew who Tommy was talking about. “She’s the one who has been keeping you busy at night. She the one who has been sneaking in and out?” Oliver had really hoped that they had been more subtle than that.

When Oliver had found out about Liam, when the one-night stand he had with Laurel’s friend Samantha had come back to bite him, he never imaged himself as a father. Never really even thought about settling down but when CPS had brought that young 2-year-old his way, his dusty blonde hair and small hands rubbing his eyes in tiredness, Oliver couldn’t think of anything else.

Samantha had died in a car accident; it had happened in Central City and it wasn’t until Detective Lance had given him a call to come to the precinct that he even knew what was happening. All he remembered was Tommy by his side and a social worker telling him that he was the father by the birth certificate.

Had there been doubts? Of course, there was.

Did he have to a paternity test? Yes, he did.

But did he ever not believe that Liam was his from the first time he saw him? Never, not one bit.

Everything else was a formality, both on the social worker’s part but also his family. He understood but he welcomed Liam into his life with open arms and that was the day that he realized that he needed to turn his life around.

And Tommy along with it. Oliver moved into a townhouse with Liam, Tommy joining them and the place they found was nice, three levels with separate stairway to the middle level. Tommy lived on the bottom in a fully furnished unit 3 bed unit and Oliver and Liam on the next two levels. Did the requirement need to have internal access to the other levels as well? Of course, it did, it made looking after Liam easier but gave both men their own lives and they really only saw each other when they needed to.

There had been no awkward mornings with random woman and no awkward explanations to Liam. It worked out perfectly … so how did Tommy know about Felicity?

“Come on man, I know you. You can’t go long without sex and it’s not like you leave Liam alone at night and I know you don’t want strangers around him so that only leaves some girl sneaking in and out.”

Well he wasn’t wrong at all.

Oliver sighed, “It’s not like that.” He glanced at Tommy seeing only a raised eyebrow. “Fine… Yes I have been sleeping with Felicity. But its more than that … or at least I don’t know.” Oliver leaned back on the bench.” Oliver thought back to when he had met Felicity for the first time. A smile finding his lips.

A soft ding met Oliver’s ear breaking his thought process on the papers that were sitting on the desk, staring at him like they were mocking him.

He looked up from his work at the sound that echoed through the empty office. No one else was supposed to be there except him and his son Liam … where was Liam?

He panicked instantly and looked over to where the 3.5-year-old was supposed to be playing in the corner but instead of a bubbly child he found trucks and toys laying lifeless.

Raising himself from the desk chair, Oliver was about to rush to the elevator until he saw Liam running towards him. “Daddy!” He was laughing, a happy and bright smile, jumping into Oliver’s arms and swinging between his legs.

A soft “Oh” brought Oliver’s attention and as he looked up, he was met with long legs in a pencil skirt, pink blouse, red lips, bright blue eyes hidden behind black framed glasses and curly blonde hair.

“When he said daddy … I had no idea he meant you. I mean not that I don’t think you could be daddy, I’m sure someone would want to call you daddy—” The blonde brought her fingers to her lips, silencing herself. Oliver fought the urge to smile, she was cute.

Clearing her throat, the blonde straightened her back, “Mr Queen, I found this little one on the IT level, he knew which level he had to come back up to but he couldn’t reach it. And here we are.” The blonde was met with silence, being stared at by her boss, she nodded again, “And I will be going. Liam be good. Don’t come to the IT department until you can reach the top button to come back.”

“Bye Lissy!” Liam giggled still in his father’s arms, his voice breaking Oliver out of his trance.

“Wait…I’m guessing your name isn’t Lissy…” Oliver placed Liam on the ground, hearing him run back to his toys like nothing had happened.

She nodded again, “Ah no, Felicity Smoak.” Felicity gave Oliver a little wave, unsure of if she would shake his hand or just stand here.

“Felicity Smoak? From IT?” Oliver watched her nod again, he’d heard her name before, it had been floated around since she had been hired. “Thank you, Ms. Smoak, I hope he didn’t bother you tonight.”

Felicity smiled, her eyes lighting up even more, “Oh it’s ok Mr. Queen. We had a nice little game of hide and seek. He also reminded me that it was way past my dinner time and that I should go home.”

“Oliver…” Felicity blinked at Oliver, not sure what he was saying, “Oliver is fine, Mr. Queen was my father.” For some reason he didn’t like being called Mr. Queen, he much preferred being called Oliver. It was his name; people should use it.

“Right but he is dead… I mean he drowned…” Again, Felicity covered her mouth with her fingers, closing her eyes. Oliver was already starting to understand that she did not have a filter. “Oliver … please call me Felicity.” Oliver nodded and smiled as he watched her smile once more, say good bye to Liam and turn away from him.

He watched her go, he would be lying if he said he didn’t watch her ass move in that pencil skirt, he was only human but she was a breath of fresh air. She didn’t come onto him; she didn’t saunter up to him and touch him. She was awkward and chatty. Her reaction to him was something he was not used to but he liked it. It was different and nice.

Tommy laughed loudly, “Oh man, so she didn’t fall all over you and you still ended up in bed with her. How do you do it man!?” Tommy got a little loud, a couple of the other parents glancing their way at his words.

Oliver shoved him in the shoulder, “It wasn’t like that. I knew her for about 12 months before we started sleeping together. She very quickly became my best friend.” He looked over at Tommy, unsure of how he would take someone else being called his best friend. Tommy raised his eyebrows at Oliver.

“Oh come on man, after everything I went through with dad dying and Liam coming into my life, I had to change so quickly and there were so many people who still wanted the old Ollie but Felicity just let me be me, ya know?” But Tommy nodded, he understood. Felicity didn’t know Ollie, she didn’t have that expectation of Oliver except for the man in front of her.

“I get it man. And I’m glad that you have someone in your life like that. I don’t like sharing the title of best friend but I have seen a change in you, and I have noticed it for about the last 12 months so sleeping with her or not, she has been good for you. You gotta introduce me though man. I can’t believe I didn’t know about her. You been sleeping with her for 6 months and didn’t know.”

Oliver laughed, shaking his head, “It was her request to keep us and our friendship private. She never really told me why but she asked and I respect her request.”

Tommy looked at Oliver, he couldn’t believe who he was talking to. Oliver has changed since finding out about Liam, he had to grow up and become a father and an adult overnight. He was proud of his friend, realising that he needed to change his life as well, albeit at a slower pace.

Oliver focused back on Liam, his eyes watching him but his mind slipping back to Felicity. He hated that she left quickly, hated that she felt so nervous around him. He would have to seek her out at the next chance he got.
