Chapter Text

My Dearest Yneari,

I was glad to get your last letter.  I probably shouldn’t tell you that I literally jumped and squealed when Mathienne delivered it.  So, I won’t tell you that.

Guess what? (If you already know, you have to pretend you don’t). The new princeling was born four days ago! They’ve named him Callon, apparently after the elf king that began relations between Farset and the elves. That seemed appropriate since he is a product of the union of the elves and Farset. Haha.

I got to meet Prince Callon yesterday. Quinn looked so happy and the baby is precious—and bald as a melon. I think he’ll have dark hair like his Ada, but it’s hard to tell right now. He did get his father’s ears, however, much to Quinn’s delight and Emerys’ chagrin. I said I was just glad his ears matched…one pointed and one rounded would be awkward. You don’t think that could really happen do you? I hope our baby has matching ears!

Speaking of our baby, you worry entirely too much, My Love.  I am perfectly fine.  Women have babies every day in the natural course of things.  This baby will come when he chooses and will be lovely and healthy.  Oh, no, I don’t know that he’ll be a boy, but I suspect so.  He can be awfully violent when I do not eat when he wishes.  He’s pushy and demanding.  Kind of reminds me of his father, now that I think of it.

I have a confession.  I think I have killed your prized poppies.  I’m not sure how I did it, but they are looking quite sickly though summer is in its full glory all around them.  Jhearithe has said I did it on purpose to give you a reason to come home.  I absolutely refused to dignify that accusation with an answer.

Jhearithe and Feleth and Rínor are taking good care of me.  Ialantha has been a dear.  And despite the season, Ylyndar has made sure I have enough firewood for the next three winters.  Usually he makes Lijahar chop it, under duress of course, although occasionally it’s Tarion who does it (with far more grace, I should add).  Mathienne comes over to help me clean at least once a week.  I think she does it because she secretly likes to check on the baby.  Of all the gifts you’ve ever given me, Love, your family was one of the best.  I value only your heart and your baby more.  I know.  OUR family.

I hate to make your burden greater, but for a moment, I shall be horribly selfish and tell you that I miss you more than I would miss the sun should it choose not to shine until you return.  I look forward to the day I will again sleep in your arms.

And now, to get your mind off my horrible selfishness, I will tell you about my latest crazy idea.  Yesterday, I decided that I should see if I could make friends with the diamond trees.  They’ve always been the holdouts.  All the other trees will talk to me now.  But how does one bribe a tree?  After some thought, I decided that maybe I should give it some good fertilizer.  After all, food often works on people.  Well, I succeeded in making the diamond trees talk to me, but apparently I offended all the others.  I’m back to only the Jades and the Diamonds talking to me.  Sigh.  How do you put up with my antics?

Oops. Sorry about the tiny smudge on the paper.  If I were a good wife I would rewrite the whole thing so you wouldn’t have to see that.  Just pretend it’s not a tear stain.  I love you with all the ferocity I can muster.

Le i velethron e-guil nîn(1),

Your Gracie

P.S.  Pinig (2) is kicking me pretty savagely.  Either he wants me to tell you hello  or he’s telling me it’s time to eat.  Not sure which.
