Soulmates aren't romantic. As his parents loved to remind Steve, soulmate romances were fairytales that people yearned to believe in. The idea of it could be used to gain influence and destroy schemes set to control you, but they still didn't exist.
He also learnt that societies belief in it was enough to send his own soulmate into a rambling crisis the first time he met Robin.
She didn't take kindly to him laughing as she tried to reason herself into dating him and the disgusted faces she pulled each time. The yelling over that was just as funny though so it took the manager training them interrupting before he could calm down enough to explain.
“Soulmates aren't romantic. You're against the idea enough I'm not even going to suggest it. Can we focus on getting trained now?”
“Rude! You got to learn some personal deep secrets and aren't giving me anything in return?”
