So when given the opportunity to join his sister shopping, for once he agrees. While out he catches a sent that was indescribable and so of course he follows it only to turn the corner and see the most beautiful person he’s ever laid eyes on. His wolf suddenly screams “MATE” in his head. And really, who wouldn’t that throw off balance? He can’t be blamed for falling right there. Well maybe today wasn’t so bad anyway.

Or

A dumb, cute, fluffy, sterek fic where they meet in a world where their lives aren’t so bad and then proceed to start dating.

Notes:

This is my first story so, let me know if I should keep it up or let it drop. Also no set plot other than the first few chapters so let me hear ideas or other tags I should add. Please. I’m going to need help. Like so much help figuring everything out.

First chapter: Stile’s POV
Second chapter: Derek’s POV of first chapter.
Third chapter onward: alternating POV

Labeled kind of underage because they date while Stiles is seventeen but don’t actually do anything until his eighteenth birthday.

Not rated because I don’t know where I’m going to end up taking this story.

None of this has been beta read so if you see mistakes comment and let me know.

Chapter 1: First meetings. Stiles POV

Chapter Text

Stiles Stilinski was NOT having a good day. But let’s back up. It all started in the morning with his alarm clock dragging him out of bed. After all, didn’t it know that it was a Saturday and that Saturdays were made for sleeping in? Wait… why did he have an alarm set for a Saturday anyway? That’s when it clicked he turned seventeen today, and he had EVERYTHING planned out.

First a birthday breakfast with his parents. Then they would spend the majority of the morning watching cartoons on tv after all it’s been tradition as long as he can remember, and there’s no way he’s missing out on that. Second Scott comes by to pick him up for lunch and they got to the diner to get the worlds best curly fries, and a milkshake because no birthday would be complete without that. Next they would go to the old arcade so that Stiles family had enough time to get his birthday party set up because they were obviously going to have one, even if they hadn’t mentioned it to him, maybe it was supposed to be a surprise...yeah, that’s all. Whatever, it’s not important, all that mattered was that he stop wasting time and get to it.

He got what must of been one of the quickest showers of his life before throwing on some jeans, a tee-shirt, and a red flannel before taking his adderal and heading downstairs.

“Morning, kiddo, sit down and get yourself some breakfast. I don’t have long to talk, got called into work early, some civil dispute got out of hand and we’re dealing with what could turn into a full blown riot. Now where did I put those papers?” his dad said as he looked across the counter for the missing papers. Wait. What did he mean go into work early? He always took the morning of his birthday off so they could all spend it together as a family. No. No he couldn’t think like that, after all his Dad was the Sheriff now, other people needed him for things more important than just a birthday breakfast. He was still a little disappointed though even though he tried to convince himself he shouldn’t be.

“Oh, uh yeah, ok Dad it’s fine I’ll just spend the morning talking to Mom.” His dad gave him a bit of a weird look at that but just went to his bedroom to look for those papers. ‘That was weird why did he look at me like that’ Stiles wondered as he walked to the kitchen. He saw his mom eating cereal at the kitchen table and reading the morning paper. Cereal, but they always had pancakes and peanut butter on special occasions, maybe they just don’t have the ingredients today?

“Good morning, Mischief, sleep well?”

“Morning Mom, I slept well if it wasn’t for the stupid alarm clock. So what’s the plan for today?” Stiles asked as he poured himself some cereal. He tried not to be to disappointed at missing the pancakes, after all things happen. He was so lost in thoughts that he didn’t even notice he was pouring too much milk until it started to overflow

Claudia laughed at her sons antics before handing him some napkins and answering his question “I have so much to do today,” Stiles perked up at this, expecting to hear her plans for his birthday party before she continued “First I have to help miss Smith down the road she’s setting up a new flower garden and I promised to help he shop for the essentials, then I have an appointment to pick up more seed packets and new tools for the flower shop, finally I have to babysit the twins for the Samtoms, again, I swear they go out every night I’ll probably just have to pick up fast food for dinner on the way home.” Stiles felt himself deflate more and more as he listened.

Had they really just forgotten about his birthday? No, it couldn’t be that they would never, maybe they were just pretending to have forgotten so that when they “surprise” him with a party he won’t be expecting it. Yeah, that had to be it to bad for them they couldn’t just pull one over on him like that. They’ve probably even roped Scott into it too. Well then he guessed he could just go along with it until his party after all. What could it hurt?

He continued to talk with his mom over breakfast, and right as they started to clean up the bowls his dad came back with the papers he had been looking for.

He kissed his wife and said “Have a good day you two, I have to go. Oh, and Stiles make sure you do the dishes before bed tonight I know it’s Saturday and you’re going out with Scott but you still have to do chores.”

Wow they were REALLY leaning into this whole, forgetting his birthday thing. “OK Dad, I’ll make sure to do them whenever I get home after hanging out with Scott.”

Stiles decided to do his birthday tradition on his own if his parents were acting like they forgot. So he went to the living room, turned on the TV and flipped it over to the Saturday morning cartoons. He just sat there on the couch watching TV until he heard a knock at the door and went to open the door for Scott.

“Hey, Scotty, you ready to go and get the best lunch ever before crushing some little kids high score at the arcade?”

“Yeah! But do we have to go eat at that old diner we eat there like every day.”

“No we don’t,” Stiles insisted “It’s more like once a week” he acquiesced at Scott’s disbelieving look.

“But Dude, there is so many other places we could go!”

Stiles couldn’t believe this, after all it was his birthday, even if Scott was acting like he forgot! Whatever, he would deal with it.”Fine,” he sighed “if you really wanna go somewhere else, I guess we can.”

As they climbed into Stiles jeep. Scott began to do what Scott does… talk about Allison. Stiles tried to listen really he did! But even on medication his ADHD could not hyper focus on Scotts relationship drama. And yet that seemed to be how the entire time that were together went Scott just kept talking about Allison all through lunch and on the way to the arcade.

Stiles finally had to break the chatter, he couldn’t handle it anymore! “So Scott any special plans for today, after the arcade?” He asked hoping to get a hint about his birthday after all Scott was a terrible liar.

But Scott just looked him with his head tilted like a confused puppy, like always. “No, why?”

“Because it’s m-“ Stiles started to say fed up and frustrated with everything when Scott’s phone chimed.

“Oh Dude it’s Allison! She says she’s wants to talk. In person. Oh no. Nononononono she’s going to break up with me. Dude I know I said we could hang out at the Arcade today but I really have to go and try to save my relationship. You understand right?”

That’s when it hit Stiles they all really had forgotten his birthday…. Whatever it wasn’t like it was super important anyway. He was just Stiles, why would anyone actually remember anyway. Of course he couldn’t let his bff know how he was really feeling so he just did what he always did. Plastered on a smile and acted like everything was fine. “Of course dude, go do what you have to.”

Scott beamed at him before running in the direction of Allison’s house fortunately it wasn’t too far from the arcade so he didn’t need to ask for a ride. Stiles felt his smile drop as Scott turned the corner.

And that’s how Stiles ended up having an awful day on his birthday. All alone outside an arcade completely forgotten. ‘You know what screw it’ he thought, ‘ I’m going to have a great day without them anyway’ and with new determination he took a step towards the arcade just to see what must of been the male model of the century turn the corner and face plant right in front of him.I mean this guy was hot. Like Greek god hot. Stiles had been on the fence about weather or not he was bi for a while just seeing this guy confirmed it for him. Watching him face plant was just an added bonus. And so he did what anyone with a sense of humor would do. He laughed until his sides hurt. After all he was a bit of an asshole it was like his duty to laugh at hot people’s misfortune.

Well, the least he could do was offer the guy a hand getting up and who knew maybe today wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Chapter Text

Derek Hale was not having a good day. It all started when he was woken up by Amelia Hale. His cousin and one of Peters daughters. Ever since her first shift that past full moon she had been up at 5:30 in the morning. Every. Single. Morning. And of course she couldn’t just play by herself. No, no, no, she absolutely HAD to have someone to play with. Apparently this Saturday morning, and Derek’s only day off this week, it was his turn to play with her she had decided. And being a six year old she woke him up in pure six year old fashion by jumping on his stomach and screeching “Play with meeeeeeeeeeee!”

Derek let out an oomph at suddenly and jarringly being woken by a 50 pound weight hurdling straight onto his stomach. He gave her a glare and a small growl at being woken up hoping to get a few more minutes to sleep in. Instead all he got was a giggle and “Come ONNNNNNN you’re awake now so we can play werewolves and monsters! You can be the monster and I can be the super cool werewolf that beats you up!”

Derek let out a real groan at that, knowing that she was definitely going to “accidentally” use her claws to scratch him after all “super cool werewolves” had claws to beat up the bad guys. “Are you sure you don’t want to just play princess tea party instead?” He asked only slightly hopeful.

“No” she proclaimed hotly “YOU never let me put makeup on you, put dresses on you, or ANYTHING fun. You just act like you ate the other tea party guests. So we have to stop playing. But when we play werewolves and monsters you actually have to play.” She said matter of factly.

Oh, so she caught on to that little trick did she? Well at least it worked a couple of times. Derek realized he was fighting a losing battle because Amelia is one of the most stubborn werewolves in the family next to him. Meaning even if he didn’t play he wouldn’t get back to sleep either. He decided to cut his loses and forced himself out of bed and winced at the corresponding squeal for the exited werepup.

In the end it went about as expected, he spent the next two hours getting slightly clawed by his younger cousin while he desperately waited for the rest of his family to wake up and distract her. When everyone finally did wake up he tried to grab the book he was currently reading and find somewhere quiet to go read but every corner of the house was occupied by a different Hale. Eventually he gave up and decided to get some breakfast.

When he got there a few of his other family members were already eating. Both his parents, his twin sister Laura, both his younger sisters Cora and Sophie, and his Uncle Peter. While his family didn’t have a family breakfast because it was just too much hassle trying to get everyone up and going and over there morning grumpiness, they did have family dinner nightly where basically everyone is required unless that have an explicit reason not to come. Breakfast was more of a random spectrum of who you might or might not be eating with depending on when they decided to eat. Derek was usually the last to eat and tended to eat alone so that he could enjoy some peace in the mornings. Apparently the universe just had it out for him this morning though.

He grabbed his favorite cereal, only to realize that they were out of milk. To Derek this was a sign that there truly was no fairness in the world. He decided just to eat his cereal dry and listen to the ongoing conversation at hand without adding his input.

“… are just so pretty.” Sophie was in the middle of saying. What was so pretty? Derek had no idea, maybe as he continued to listen he would be clued in. But he watched as Cora scoff and figured it probable was something girly if she was scoffing “ I’m telling you that this boy in my class is so cute but I have no idea how to ask him out” oh, that’s what this is about school started last week and Sophie’s been going on and on and ON about this boy who sits next to her in her 8th grade math class.

“Careful you’re starting to sound like Derek” Peter remarked. It was an ongoing joke in the family that of his three sisters and two brothers HE was the secret romantic under his gruff and grumpy exterior. And if he was being honest they weren’t wrong, not that he’d ever admit it to anyone. His parents had always said that he had a big heart and love in his eyes even if no one else saw it. But the thing that started the joke was that when Derek said when he was fifteen that he was going to find his mate. And though he hasn’t said it again, he still is planning on finding them one day.

There’s not much known about mates. Just that every werewolf has at least one and in some extremely rare cases more than one. That they are the werewolf’s other half, the person that could settle both the wolf and the person in them, the one person that they would do anything for and vice versa. The other thing about mates was that there rare themselves only about ten wolves per generation ever found their mates and instead many wolves just went to living happy lives never meeting their mate. His parents weren’t mates but they were still the happiest couple that Derek had ever seen. Because of the rarity of mates and how possessive wolves tend to be someone finding multiple mates and going on to live a polyamorous life with them was something that only happened one every couple of centuries or so. But that wasn’t really what Derek was looking for just someone he could entrust his entire heart to without the fear of it being like one of his first two relationships.

Despite wanting to find his mate Derek has in no way been holding off on the dating front, though he still hasn’t had much luck. His first relationship, Paige, had told him to his face that he wasn’t and never would be good enough for anyone to love before moving across the country. Needless to say he was heartbroken and never quite got the closure he was was looking for. So when his second relationship… Kate… he shuddered even thinking the name and his wolf wined in his head, had just used him so that she could try to kill his family, he hadn’t thought anything of it until she started asking too many personal questions and, so he told his family about it and they managed to stop her before burning his family alive while they slept. And … yeah his family had him put in therapy after that. And honestly it really helped by the time he turned twenty one he had started dating again and that was where he was now at twenty two. He hadn’t had anything more that a few hookups since then but he’s still been putting himself out there.

“Derek!”

Derek snapped back to reality realizing he had totally zoned out of the rest of the conversation. “What?” He asked more confused than grumpy. What conversation could they possibly need him for?

“I said I have some shopping to do today and was wondering if you would come with me. The look on your face is practically screaming ‘Someone get me out of here it’s too loud’” his twin Laura said a slight smile toying on her lips

Derek rolled his eyes but was glad for any excuse he could get to get out of the house. “You just want me to carry all the bags for you” he said but nodded his head in agreement.

Laura was full on grinning now “You know me so well, oh and I guess that I should say thanks” she said as she walked out of the room.

—————

Derek regretted his choice. He should have just gone for a run in the preserve or swam in the lake, hell jumping off a cliff would have been better than shopping at this point. They had been walking for what must’ve been hours at this point. He finally couldn’t make it while carrying any more bags, so he turned to Laura and said “I’m going to go put these in the car because I can’t carry anymore I’ll be back or maybe I’ll just sit in the car.” He meant the last part as a joke little did he know just how useful that little bit of information would be at explaining his whereabouts.

“Okay, whatever, have fun” Laura was clearly distracted by whatever dress she was looking at on the rack.

As Derek closed the trunk on the car and turned to head back in he caught a faint whiff a scent that had his wolf at attention immediately. He wolf always tended to be on edge while in public hence his hate of shopping, but this was on a different level. And it was different the sent wasn’t bad it was indescribable but definitely pleasant and both he and his wolf wanted to find the source of it. So he tracked it. The more of it he caught the more intoxicated it seemed to make him. He’s pretty sure he knocked down an old lady at some point but he was too focused on the scent to care.

He knew that he was getting close and that the source of the scent should be just around this corner. And the second he turned the corner several things happened all at once. First he saw what had to be the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes on in the package of a teenage boy covered in pale skin and moles as far as he could see which wasn’t much due to his baggy clothes covering most of his arms and legs. Second he heard his wolf scream “MATE, MINE, CLAIM, NOW” in his head. Thirdly the screaming wolf threw his balance off just enough so that when his right foot just barely caught his left he went down. HARD. Fourthly he was so focused on the boy in front of him that his reflexes didn’t kick in fast enough and he went face first into the pavement. And finally he heard what must’ve been the ugliest laugh he had ever heard in his life. And yet all he wanted was to hear it again… and again… maybe he should just make a recording of it. So he could listen whenever he wanted. Thoroughly embarrassed he decided to go with his natural gut reaction and cast as scathing of a glare as he could manage upwards. Only when he looked up he saw that the boy was offering his hand to help him back up to his feet. Well then what do you know… maybe today wouldn’t be as bad as he had originally thought, he accepted the boys hand.

Chapter 3: Getting to know each other

Summary:

Derek joins Stiles in the arcade to talk for a little bit

Notes:

From here on out it will be alternating POV

Also, like always, let me thoughts, suggestions, and improvements in the comments

Chapter Text

As Stiles helped the man to his feet he smirked and said “ten out of ten, would watch fall again.”

The man just scowled at the remark and looked off to the left as though he was avoiding looking Stiles in the face. Rude. But whatever, right when Stiles lost hope of the man responding he heard a mumbled “thanks”

Deciding to make this as difficult as possible Stiles responded “Sorry, what was that? Couldn’t hear you.”

Derek scowled harder. He knew he should be trying to charm his mate, especially since he had been looking for him for years at this point. But his embarrassment at the fall, his brain trying it’s hardest to solely focus on the boy in front of him, and his wolf chanting “MATE, CLAIM, MINE” repeatedly made it hard to think of any responses other than “wow, your pretty” and he didn’t think that would go over well. But he’d be dammed if he wasn’t making a mental picture of the boys smile in front of him. Eventually he decided to just go simple. “Thank you, for helping me up, and my names Derek. Derek Hale” …. Wow, what an opener. Derek wanted to slap himself, he’s pretty sure Laura would have if she saw that.

But his mate just smiled and said “I’m Stiles, well that’s not actually my name, but my real name should have burned at the stake in the nineteenth century and never made it to this day. And before you ask, no I will not tell you my real name, even my bff, Scott, doesn’t know it.” His scent soured at this, which confused Derek, usually peoples scent got sweeter at the mention of their loved ones. “Anyway, it’s nice to meet you Derek, what are doing over here at the arcade? Usually people come in groups, but you’re all alone. Well, maybe not alone since we’re talking. But most of the time people who come here all by themselves have no friends to go with them. I mean not that you have no friends because like have you seen what you look like you’d probably be one of the popular jocks at school. Oooh! Or maybe you’d be more like the broody, loner in the corner with your scowls and glares you’ve been giving me. Not that you’re a loner. Oh my god, please feel free to shut me up whenever you get tired of the word vomit.” Derek’s head was reeling at all the new information.

Stiles winced when the poor guy, “Derek” his brain supplied, looked as though he had gotten whiplash. But after a few rapid blinks Derek said “My sisters down the street shopping, we’ve been at it for hours and I needed at break so I decided to go for a walk.” The guy looked pretty sheepish and Stiles felt bad for making him feel as though he had to explain. “Anyway,” he continued “I’m not the only one who seems to be here alone, mind if I join you?”

Stiles felt another pang of sadness at that. “Yeah, feel free to come with. But for the record, I didn’t come here alone, I came with Scott, the best friend I mentioned and only friend really, we were here for my birthday today but he had to leave early for a emergency. Sorry way too much tmi” Stiles said as he walked into the arcade Derek following close behind. Stiles didn’t really know why he was defending Scott leaving him, again, to a basically complete stranger but he never did have a very good filter. And he had a habit of lying for him.

Derek’s wolf wined when his scent soured again and he realized it was because his friend had ditched him. Derek had noticed that his heart had stuttered at the part about the emergency, not enough to be a full lie but enough so that he might have only given a partial truth. Whatever his friend had ditched him for on his BIRTHDAY clearly didn’t seem to really classify as an emergency to his mate-Stiles. It was only a second later his brain finally caught onto a very important piece of information. Today was Stiles birthday…birthday… wait a second, how old was Stiles? Derek felt a ball of anxiety settle into his stomach. Looking at his mate he was clearly younger than Derek, he looked sixteen or seventeen. Hell, when he first saw him Derek thought of him as a “boy” as in not a man yet. Shit, maybe he turned eighteen today? Oh, god please, let him be eighteen. “That sucks, no one should be alone on their birthdays” he got a small smile at that. Damn, he was adorable “So how old are you today, birthday boy?” Please say eighteen. PLEASE SAY EIGHTEEN.
Eighteen
Eighteen
Eighteen

“As of today, I’m seventeen.”

Fuck.

Seventeen, he was seventeen. That meant that there was no way in hell that he could make a move on Stiles. Not yet anyway. But… that didn’t mean he couldn’t get to know him in the meantime. It’s only a year how hard could it be? Just one year? One year of waiting for Stiles. One year of being alone again. One year of longing for what he couldn’t have… Fuck.

Stiles wasn’t sure why Derek had actually joined him in the arcade, and after Derek got quiet he began to talk to fill the silence. “Anyway we came to the arcade because it’s one of the only place in town other that bowling or mini golf that’s actually fun. There is absolutely nothing fun to do. Trust me I’ve looked. And on top of that I don’t get invited to any of the parties in town, just because my dad’s the sheriff. I mean I could party with the best of them if I was given the chance.” That’s when Stiles looked over and realized that Derek was staring at him as though he was actually listening. People usually just ignored him until he eventually stopped chattering or looked annoyed but there he was just looking. Stiles felt himself shiver under Derek’s gaze. The truth was despite the bad case of the grumpies Derek seemed like a really good guy and he wasn’t hard on the eyes. Wait a second hadn’t he said that his last name was Hale. “Is there any chance you’re related to Cora Hale.

Derek just nodded and said “she’s my younger sister, why? Do you know her?”

“Dude, no way! She’s in my class, super intimidating though. And tends to brush me off whenever I try to talk to her.”

Derek chuckled “That sounds like her” he was categorizing every new piece of information he got on Stiles. His dads the sheriff. Check. In the same class as Cora. Check. His eyes lit up when he got into talking about something. Check. He didn’t mind filling Derek’s silences. Triple checked. Derek was grateful, he had no idea what he would have talked about if he were put on the spot, but he could listen to Stiles voice and never grow tired of it.

“Also I’ve seen her get picked up by someone after school, sometimes, they look a lot like you and drives a Camaro?”

“You must be thinking of my twin, Laura”

“Oh, so are all the Hale siblings as hot as you three or are you just the lucky ones?” Stiles regretted it the second it came out of his mouth. He kind of wished he could just have the floor swallow him up right there so ge could forget this ever happened. He wasn’t that lucky.

Derek’s wolf didn’t know wether to be happy their mate liked their appearance or growl that he also liked how his siblings looked. Instead he decided to return Stiles attempt at flirting. At least he thought Stiles was flirting the look for horror on his face and scent of embarrassment said otherwise. “No, all of my siblings and I got pretty lucky in that department. We’ve all been told that we’re what most people define as attractive. But personally I don’t think any of us have a single thing on your looks, gorgeous”

Stiles mind shut down. Did Derek just flirt back with him? No, that’s not possible. That’s not how the world works. Stiles flirts. People brush him off and everything goes about like normal. No one ever flirts back. Maybe he was dreaming, or maybe he misunderstood, or maybe he just imagined the whole thing. But Derek was smiling at him and… Damn that was a pretty smile. Suddenly Stiles felt like it was all too overwhelming. So he took his first thought of how to get out of it. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?” He asked as calm and naturally as he could manage.

Derek response came without hesitation “Nowhere as important as right here talking to you.”

Well, then. Derek was 100% flirting with him. If he knew Derek and they were close friends then maybe he could mark it off as him just being a good friend on his birthday. Like if Scott had said that then Stiles wouldn’t have batted an eye. But someone he met about fifteen minutes ago? No, that was flirting. Stiles didn’t really know how to deal with this, but before he could come up with an appropriate response he heard Derek sigh.

Derek hated to admit it but Stiles was right, he needed to be at the car when Laura got there so that he could let her assume that that was where he was there the whole time and she didn’t panic when she got there and he was gone. “Unfortunately, you are right. I do have to get back to my sister. I wasn’t supposed to be gone this long on my walk. But I’ll see you around ok Stiles?”

“Ok”

Stiles was grateful and slightly disappointed as Derek left. The problem was that somehow he was already developing a crush on the older man. He really shouldn’t be surprised he developed feelings for Lydia just as quickly, but he was. Derek actually seemed to listen to him, was gorgeous, and if his flirting was any indication, might actually have feelings back. What could Stiles say, it didn’t take much to win him over just a little love and attention. But since Derek left there was no way for those feelings to develop completely only a few more minutes and a few more blatant flirts and he would’ve been gone on him. But that wasn’t the point and now wasn’t the time he had some arcade games to play.

As he walked up to the counter to get his game card to swipe on the machines, the guy at the counter smiled and slid a card to him.

“But I haven’t paid for a card yet”

“I know, a gentleman came by a second ago and paid for a pass for you specifically . That card is a special one, it will let you play all the games here for the rest of the day rather than having a certain amount of money on the card.

Stiles mouth dropped open “But those are like a hundred dollars a piece!”

“Yep, he also paid for this.” The guy pulled out a little stuffed wolf plushie and handed it to him. In had sleek dark gray fur not quite black but close. It was soft under Stiles hand, but the most mesmerizing feature was the solid gold eyes with flecks of bright yellow. “He said to tell you happy birthday.”

And that’s all it took for Stiles feelings to officially cement into a crush

Fuck

Chapter 4: Thoughts

Summary:

The boys both have a lot to think about.

Notes:

Not a lot of dialogue in this chapter, and I wasn’t really sure how to write Stiles part of this chapter so let me know if you have any ideas for changes I should make.

Though this is my first fic I’ve definitely learned that it’s easier writing Derek for me. And that I really enjoy it. Do you like his point of view? I’m really curious.

Chapter Text

Derek had a lot to think about on his walk back to the car. If Stiles was only seventeen then should Derek act on his feelings or should he just act as a friend until he turned eighteen and then ask him out? He decided to put that question on the back burner for now, because avoiding things was his specialty. But on to more immediate questions, should he tell his family that he had actually found his mate? What about his twin? They told each other everything. How could he find out more about Stiles without seeming like a stalker?

‘GO GET MATE’ his wolf growled at him.

Oh, right, that was the other issue. His wolf was royally pissed at him for leaving without placing any kind of claiming mark on Stiles, and not even scenting him.

‘No, not yet’ he told his unhappy wolf.

‘NO NOW’

‘Are you really just going to keep doing this?’

‘GO GET MATE, YOU DUMBASS’

‘I will, I promise, just not yet, please trust me on this.’

‘FINE’ his still very upset wolf growled. It still grumbled at him to let its displeasure be known whenever it got the chance. But Derek could handle that.

Now where was he? Oh, right questions.

He came to his first answer as he approached the car, fortunately it seemed Laura hadn’t come out yet. He decided that he wouldn’t tell his family just yet, because if he did, then Stiles would constantly “accidentally” run into various Hales as they scouted out the soon to be pack. He didn’t want that before he even got a chance to know Stiles on his own.

Once he had realized that he wasn’t going to tell his family yet he realize that he also couldn’t tell his twin, because as much as he loved her, she definitely would’ve told the rest of the family, even if it was just an accident. He saw that Laura was coming out of the store carrying even more bags of clothes.

He smirked as she almost toppled into an old lady, just barely swerving last second. He got out to help put away all the bags that she got.

“I’d be surprised if there was even enough room for all of that in the car” Derek quipped as he popped open the trunk.

“They were having a two for one deal and really Der, how was I supposed to just walk away from that?”

Derek snorted and rolled his eyes. Laura just stuck her tongue out at him on response. As they got back in the car Derek was glad that he was a normally quiet person, so Laura wouldn’t be suspicious of how lost he was in his head.

Now, how was he supposed to learn about Stiles? Hell, he didn’t even know his last name and on top of that Stiles wasn’t even his real name he had said so himself. Damn he was so screwed. Wait. Cora! He said that he was in Cora’s class, which meant that she had to know something about him. But he couldn’t just ask Cora, that would lead to her asking questions about why, and he didn’t want his family to know. Then again if he could trust anyone to keep a secret it would be her. And besides the reason he didn’t want the rest of his family to know was because he didn’t want Stiles to be randomly bombarded by them. But if Cora was already in his class then it would make sense for her to see him. That’s it, he had to tell Cora besides she should be able to keep the secret long enough. It wasn’t as though he was going to keep this from his family for very long in the first place, just until he got to know Stiles on his own.

“Derek!”

His head snapped up to his sister. “Yeah?”

“Why do you have that dopey smile on your face? It’s kinda freaking me out. Oh, wait! There’s that scowl that I’ve grown to love.”

Derek felt himself blush at being called out but he made sure to keep his scowl in firmly in place. He decided the rest of his issues could wait until his talk with Cora. He made idle chit chat with his twin the rest of the way home.

———

As Stiles left the arcade a few hours later with his prizes and one stuffed wolf under his arm, he realized he had a lot of thinking to do. He had finally realized that he was in fact bisexual and not just bi-curious. He was a little confused why he wasn’t more worried about that. Unfortunately that just meant that he would probably have a panic attack about that later and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it…yay. Also what should he do about everyone forgetting his birthday. Should he remind them? Should he just let it go? It’s not like it’s a big deal. After thinking about it, he decided that he was just not going to bring it up. If they remembered awesome and if they didn’t then they didn’t. Now onto the big question.

What was he going to do about his new crush? He could try to ignore it after all Derek was even farther out of his league than Lydia. Well maybe not in the looks department. But he was older and he wasn’t in his class like Lydia was, making any ten year plan impossible to pull off. Then again he had flirted back with him and Lydia never had done that. That meant that he had to have some kind of chance with him, right? Or he could have just been humoring Stiles. Yeah that was probably it, he just felt bad and humored Stiles.

He was so lost in his thoughts, he hadn’t even realize that he had arrived home. It was empty which was to be expected with his dad typically got home late and his mom told him she would be busy. All he wanted to do was go to bed, but he knew that his dad wanted him to do the dishes so he just went to the kitchen and set the stuffed wolf he hadn’t even realized that he had been carrying on the counter.

“What do you think I should do?” He asked the plushie. “I mean this day has been confusing since I got up. Should I tell everyone that it’s my birthday and guilt them about it or should I just let it go, I’m a senior now after all so what’s it matter if no one other than a complete stranger knows it’s my birthday today? And then there’s Derek in general what do you think I should do about him? And the fact that I’m not straight do I need to come out to everyone or just let it run it’s course and if they ask tell them the truth?” He turned to the plushie expectantly.

The plushie just stared back with those surprisingly piercing gold eyes.

Stiles sighed, “At least you’re a good listener even if you don’t talk much.” Just like Derek, his mind input about his new crush. No, nope, not going there. “You know what, I’m going to name you. Now let’s see what should I call you… I got it, Sir Growls the third.

He shook his head and drained the sink after he put away the last dish. He dried his hands thoroughly before reaching for the plushie. He went upstairs and undressed for bed. Stiles outgrew sleeping with stuffed animals when he was twelve, really he did, but for some reason he doesn’t feel right just setting the stuffed wolf to the side so he holds it close to his chest as he drifts to sleep. And if he decides that this is Sir Growls the thirds new home and his job is to protect his bed while Stiles is away, then no one needs to know.

Chapter 5: Big convos

Summary:

Derek talks to Cora, and then Stiles parents.

No Stiles POV this chapter couldn’t really fit it in.

PLEASE NOTE, I did not come up with the nickname “Glarek” for Derek. I read it in another fic but don’t remember which one, so if you happen to know where it originated, let me know in the comments and I’ll link it. It was a good fic if I remember right though.

Notes:

Hey I’m back. Didn’t realize how quickly time had passed. But ANYWAY, don’t hate me for how the chapter ends. I’ll admit it wasn’t my original plan for this story but, it just kind of fit to well to pass up.

Chapter Text

The next morning was a lot better for Derek than the previous day, apparently Amelia had moved on to different prey and went to get Derek’s youngest sibling, Blake. So after sleeping in he got up with a new determination to learn more about Stiles.

‘Go get Stiles?’ His wolf grumbled

‘Close, but not yet, today we learn about him so we can sweep him off his feet the next time we see him’ Derek thought back

‘Humans too complicated, with wolf just bite them and your done’ his wolf complained

‘Yeah but Stiles IS human not a wolf, it would just confuse him if we just bit him’

‘Go to Stiles still best plan’

Derek realized he wasn’t going to win a argument with his wolf this way so he switched tactics ‘You said you would trust me with this so let me do it my way so we don’t scare him off please? Plus wouldn’t it be better to get Stiles gifts we know he would like rather than just guessing and hoping?’

‘Do trust you, but want Stiles. Go do dumb human stuff but don’t mess it up or we do it my way’

‘Fine’ Derek agreed.

He was one of the first people down to breakfast, so he decided to make some scrambled eggs since the oven wasn’t in use. He made sure to make extra, not enough for the ENTIRE family because that would require their own hen coupe and like three dozen eggs, but enough for whoever was lucky enough to get down next and a couple extra eggs for an cheese omelette that he set aside for Cora. He knew that she would be more likely to tell him what he wanted to know if he buttered her up a bit, well… that or he bribed her.

He sat down to eat as his father came down to the kitchen, fortunately he, like Derek, was quiet, soft spoken when he did speak, and not a morning person so Derek didn’t have to worry about forcing small talk with him. Amelia and Blake soon followed him in, but by then his father had already claimed what was left of the eggs so the younger members of the family were left to eat cereal once Derek refused to share the omelette that he had made.

“Awww, Der you made a omelette just for me, thanks!” His twin said as she sauntered into the room bright and peppy as always in the morning. Sometimes he really didn’t understand how they were twins, let alone siblings. But he slapped her hand away when she reached for the omelette.

“Not for you either, if you want one make it yourself.”

“Dereeeeek, how could you not make one for meeeeee.” The whine she made was high enough to hurt his ears but he was on a mission and would not relent the omelette he made.

He glared at her until she sighed and slouched over to the fridge to see what was left, but she still had to have the last word so she said “ Der, you know that your glare hasn’t worked on me ever. Even when we were kids, but since you’re being a selfish asshole I guess I’ll just have to make one myself.”

“Laura, language at the table.” Her father chided half heartedly seeing as he hadn’t finished his coffee. Then he still stood and left the room with his mug in hand.

Derek was just about to put his dishes in the sink when Cora finally came down.

“Here” he grunted as he slid the cheese omelette over to her. She sent him a suspicious look, and she wasn’t the only one. Laura, looked like she was contemplating something. Derek knew that Laura would suspect he was up to something but he also knew that both he and Cora could withstand her snooping if worse came to worse.

“Since when are you nice in the mornings, Glarek?” Cora questioned.

“Yeah, what’s up” Laura piped in.

“No reason, was just wanting to spend some time with Cora today since we haven’t been hanging out much recently and figured breakfast was a good place to start.” Derek had always hated the nickname “Glarek” but ever since Cora came up with it she just wouldn’t let it drop.

“Oh, really, well what else do you have planned for today.” Cora inquired but she looked even more suspicious than before.

“Maybe join me for a run after breakfast?” Really he just wanted to get her away from the prying ears all over the house but he hoped they wouldn’t suspect anything since he went on a run most days.

“Okay I’ll play along, I’ll get ready once I’m done with this and then a couple laps around the preserve.” The rest of breakfast passed mostly in silence but Derek could see the gears turning in Laura’s head as he drank his coffee but Cora continued as though nothing had happened.

———

After they had been running for about five minutes Cora spoke up “All right we’re out of earshot so why did you really want me out here.”

Ah, so she had noticed that then, and wanted to get straight to the point, that was one thing that they tended to have in common. Neither liked beating around the bush.

“So as you know you are one of the only people in this family that can actually keep a secret other than Peter and Mom. Peter would just use it to his advantage and I’m not ready for anyone else to know yet so I need you to promise to keep this a secret between us until I’m ready to tell the rest of the family.”

“All right, now I’m intrigued, what’s going on.”

“I found my mate.” he said as bluntly as possible.

“Ha ha, okay but seriously this time or I’m going back to the house.”

“Cora I’m not kidding, I actually found my mate, do you really think I would joke about that? … Cora?” Derek turned and realized that Cora was no longer by his side. When he turned to look back he saw that she had completely stopped and was staring at him with her mouth agape.

“OH… MY… GOD… DEREK. ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW THIS IS HUGE. You actually found your mate why don’t you want to tell the rest of the family!?!?” Cora said as she jogged back up to him so he could continue his run.

“Yeah I’m serious.” Derek said as they fell back into step, “I found my mate, and I don’t want to tell the rest of the family because… well you know how they are they would crowd him before I even got the chance to know him.”

“HIM, eh”

“Yes, my mate is a guy.” Derek felt himself blushing, his whole family already knew that he swung both ways and all that, but it still made him blush when they talked about it even though they were all super supportive as more wolves tended to be less than straight than humans did.

“Look, not that I’m not super honored or anything, because I am, but why tell me about this instead of keeping it to yourself like usual?”

Derek sighed he knew this was coming. “Because you kind of, already know my mate.”

“Really? I don’t go anywhere other than school and home how would I…” Derek saw the recognition flash on her face and braced himself for what he knew was coming. “Oh. my. God.” Here it comes and…

“Are you telling me your mate is one of my teachers!”

Now it was Derek’s turn to stop completely in his tracks and stare at Cora. He braced for when he thought Cora realized he was interested in someone in her class but that was not what he was expecting so he hit him out of left field

He shuddered at the thought of dating one of his old male teachers. “No Cora, it’s not a teacher, you realize that I had the same teachers as you just a few years ago right?”

“ I’m sorry I’m still reeling over the fact that you found your mate. But if it’s not a teacher I don’t know how you expect me to know them then.”

Damn, so Derek would have to say it himself then. “It’s not one of your teachers, it’s one of the boys in your class. It’s-”

“No don’t tell me, let’s see guys in my class…for you there’s only four possibilities, Jackson, Danny, Stiles, or Scott,” Derek nearly tripped when he heard her say Stiles, so that really was what he went by… what do you know. “Can’t be Scott, that boy is straighter than the definition of straight. And his puppy love would drown you in a second. Even though Danny is the only out gay kid in our class, he’s definitely not your type so I’m gonna narrow it down to Stiles or Jackson… I really hope it’s Stiles, I couldn’t stand to be related to Jackson even if it was just through marriage …” Cora stopped for a second, “Oh, Derek, It is Stiles isn’t it. From what I remember of and have been told about Paige, Stiles is really similar. Stubborn, smart, and quick witted. But he is also so much better.”

Derek was just glad that Cora wasn’t upset he was interested in someone underage and in her class. “Yeah, it’s Stiles, but I know next to nothing about him. And it’s not like I can just ask him out he did actually mention that his dad was the sheriff”

“We’ll you can’t ‘just’ ask him out but you could go to his parents and ask them for permission to ask him out, after all his dad IS the sheriff, so use that to your advantage. If you have the head of the departments permission then who is going to press charges against you?”

“… that’s actually genius.”

“I know, but the hard part is that you are going to have to win him over. And let me be clear even if you do succeed he will tell you no. But if you do it right and win over both him and his wife then all you have to do is wait for Mrs. Claudia Stilinski to win him over. Because she is one of the only people who can. And on the bright side you already have a foot in the door with her. Her and Mom are friends, shes where mom buys the roses that she plants every year.”

“Ok so how do I do that.”

“To win over the Sheriff you’re going to have to convince him that you a.) wouldn’t hurt his son and b.) can provide for and protect his son, aka earn his respect . Now to win his wife you’re going to have to do more than just prove that you wouldn’t hurt Stiles you have to prove that you truly care about and want to be with him. From there the rest is a waiting game. I’d say if all goes according to plan it will take roughly one to two weeks for them to contact you but if it takes longer than a month and a half then your going to have to cut your losses and wait for him to turn eighteen.”

“Ok, now the question is when I should go and talk to them both.”

“Stiles and Scott always hang out on Sunday evenings. I can always hear them talking about it at school on Mondays. So you could go tonight when both the Sheriff and his wife are off.”

“Wow, thank you so much Cora this means the world to me.”

“Oh, don’t thank me, this isn’t free. You owe me one now, and I can cash in whenever I want.”

“Well since I’m basically paying for all this information about Stiles tell me more about him.”

They spent the rest of the run talking about Stiles and what he was like. But from then on Derek’s main focus was on how he was going to get Stiles parents to let him date their underage son.

———

As Derek drove up to the Stilinski residence, he was a ball of nerves. But he refused to let himself stop and think about what he was about to do.

He knew that he had to do this so he parked the car and walked up to the front door, took a deep breath and knocked. Claudia Stilinski opened the door.

“Hi, can I help you… wait a second I recognize you your Talia Hales son arn’t you?”

“Yes ma’am, my name is Derek Hale.”

“Oh I remember now, you were always the quiet and shy child when I went to visit your family, won’t you come in and have a seat?”

“Yes ma’am, thank you”

“As much as I appreciate you trying to be polite please stop with all the ma’am stuff it makes me feel old, just call me Claudia. Now it’s still much too early for your mother to be buying flowers, so tell me Derek what do you need? Oh, I’m sorry my mother would slap me for my lack of manners is there anything I can get you?”

“No thank you, ma- I mean Claudia. I was actually here to-”

“Dia, who was at the door?” The sheriff said as he walked into the room. “Oh I’m sorry I didn’t know you had joined us”

“This is Derek, Talias son. He was just about to tell us why he was here.”

Derek resisted the urge to fidget under the sheriffs gaze instead trying to remain calm so he didn’t seem weak in front of the sheriff. “Actually I was hoping to speak to the both of you, as parents.”

Derek couldn’t believe that his voice hadn’t wavered as he said that and was actually kind of proud of himself. Then both of the Stilinskis sighed before Claudia spoke “What kind of trouble has our son gotten himself into this time.”

Before Derek could say anything to ease her worries Mr. Stilinski spoke up “ I just hope we don’t have to break into our emergency fund… again”

“Oh, it’s nothing like that, I swear. I was actually hoping to ask for permission to ask your son on a date sir.”

Claudia’s eyes widened in surprise while the Sheriffs narrowed in suspicion, before he spoke “You came all the way here to my house, my home, to ask for permission to date my underage sixteen year old son. Is that right?”

“Yes sir but your son is seventeen sir.

John Stilinski got visibly angry at that “I know my own sons age and he’s sixteen.”

“But he turned seventeen yesterday sir.”

Claudia’s face went white which was shocking for her already pale complexion, but the Sheriff just seemed to just get even more red and angry at this. “ I know when my own Goddamn son’s birthday is and it’s on the 19 of September!”

Derek felt like he should back down but he knew that if he did the Sheriff would see it as a sign that he couldn’t protect Stiles so he held his ground but before he could speak Claudia put a hand on her husband’s shoulder and said “Dear, it’s the twentieth today.”

Derek watched as the horror crossed the Sheriffs face and he deflated. Then the Sheriff spoke “That still doesn’t change the fact that you are an older man trying to date my still underage son.”

“I know that it wouldn’t be right to date him, especially without your permission, because I’m five years older than he is, but that’s why I’m here today I really care about your son and all I’m asking for is a chance to ask him out and show you that I really do want to be with him. Of course nothing physical would happen until he’s eighteen but that’s not what I’m looking for. If I’m being completely honest here Stiles has everything that I’m looking for in an ideal partner, and I want to spend the next year with him showing him why I want to be with him and that’s it’s not just physical attraction for me.”

Claudia spoke up while John seemed to consider what Derek had said. “How did you know that yesterday was Stiles birthday?”

“Because, he mentioned it to me and that’s an important thing to remember about someone, especially someone who is important to you.”

A brief look of respect seemed to quickly cross her face at Derek’s answer but it was gone too quickly to make anything out of it. Then the sheriff spoke his mind.

“Look I see where your coming from, and I really do respect you more for actually coming to me rather than just going behind my back, but my son is still underage and I’m not ready to let someone five years older than him date him yet. Now if you don’t mind my wife and I have a lot to discuss.” Derek took what was clearly a dismal and stood up. It hurt hearing them refuse to allow him to date Stiles even though that was what he has been expecting. When he got to the door he stopped.

“If for any reason you change your mind please call me and let me know. Here’s my number.” He placed a piece of paper that he had put his number on on the table. Then he turned and left the Stilinskis to themselves.

———

Meanwhile in the Stilinski home.

“I just can’t believe that we forgot Stiles birthday Dia.” John said while pacing across the floor, “I just can’t believe it what are we going to do to make it up to him, it’s not like we can just say ‘hey we forgot your birthday but here’s a half-assed party we threw together for you’” John had been so busy pacing the room that he hadn’t even noticed how quiet his wife had been. “Dia, are you okay?” He said one he saw her.

“John, I hate to brush this to the side but can we worry about this a little later? I know that sounds awful but I think we might have a bigger problem.”

“What? The Hale boy?”

“No, John. Of course Stiles birthday comes before that. The problem is that Stiles birthday isn’t the first thing that I’ve forgotten. I’ve been forgetting things for the past few months, but never anything this big. Like where I put my car keys, or that I had a lunch date with a co-worker. But I forgot my own sons birthday and I never forget that.”

“What are you saying, Dia?

“John I think we should go to the doctor.”

Chapter 6: Permission

Summary:

Stiles talk with his mom.

School.

Sheriff POV.

Derek gets permission.

Notes:

I’m back. Part 2. Sorry work has been eating me alive lately but I have today off so I actually have time to write.

Chapter Text

When Stiles got home from Scott’s on Sunday he realized that he was home alone, again. He found a note on the kitchen table, that said, “We’re going out for an errand. Be home soon. Love, dad.” deciding he didn’t want to just sit around and play games. He went ahead and went to bed.

The next morning he got ready for school as usual his dad had already gone into work but his mom was in the kitchen eating cereal, so he joined her.

“Good morning, mom”

“Good morning, mischief. So why didn’t you mention that we forgot your birthday on Saturday.”

Stiles froze while pouring his cereal, “It didn’t seem like a big deal. It was just one missed birthday it’s not like it was the end of the world or anything.”

“But sweetheart, it was a big deal. Especially to your father and I. We forgot your birthday and we both feel awful about it especially since you didn’t even feel like it was important enough to mention. Your always important to us and big days for you are a big days for us too. Ok?”

“Ok, mom”

“Don’t worry your father and I will make sure that we come up with a way to make it up to you. And on the bright side you didn’t spend it alone you were with Scott.”

“Yeah, right Scott.”

His mom always was the best at seeing right through him when he tried to lie or omit literally anything. It was the worst he couldn’t get away with anything.

“I know that tone, what happened with Scott.”

“Well-uh. Let’s just say you weren’t the only ones to forget.”

“Scott forgot too!”

“ Yeah, and on top of that, he also had to leave for an emergency with Allison. apparently he was worried she was gonna break up with him. But don’t worry I wasn’t alone. I ended up talking to this really nice guy, Derek Hale. I go to school with his sister Cora. He was really nice and he made sure I wasn’t alone, he even bought me a pass for the arcade all day.”

Stiles couldn’t stand to be pitied, so he grabbed his stuff and said he was gonna be late before running out the door. He was in such a rush he didn’t see the considerate look in his mother’s eyes at the mention of Derek.

———

Stiles got to school and went to his locker. He and Scott used to meet there daily and talk before heading to classes but that ended the second week of this year. Scott managed to ask Allison the new girl out at the end of the first week, and ever since he’s just been… busy. He and Stiles hardly hang out after school anymore, so the only time they spend together is Sundays. The only reason Scott was with him on Saturday was because Stiles asked him to meet him there specifically. And as of yesterday Scott had informed Stiles that he wanted to spend more time with Allison so she would be “joining” them on Sundays. Stiles gave him one month before he asked Stiles to start skipping Sundays so he could be with Allison alone.

He let out a sigh and just went ahead and headed to home room. On the way he passed Lydia and let out his obligatory “Good morning my goddess” although he hadn’t really thought about her as much over the weekend. All of the sudden he had a very upset jock shoving him into the lockers.

“Back off Stilinski” Jackson snarled “She doesn’t even know who you are and doesn’t need you wasting her time.”

“Sorry, Jackass. I hadn’t realized that you two were back together after your frequent off periods. It changes so often you’d think it’s a light switch. Together, separate, together, separate.” Stiles responded dripping with sarcasm.

“Your just jealous she can’t stay away from me and won’t get close to you.”

“And you’re lucky she keeps taking you back, sooner or later she’ll wisen up and dump you. Permanently.”

“Jackson, hurry up.” Lydia called from down the hall.

“Whatever, she’ll never want a loser like you either way.” He said before stalking off to who knows where.

When Stiles got to homeroom he was more than a little hurt when he realized that Scott moved to sit closer to Allison and hadn’t saved him a spot on the other side of him. Realizing the fight wasn’t worth the trouble or energy after the weekend he had, he just found a different seat.

The rest of the day just seemed to follow the same pattern. He still got to talk to Scott during chemistry because Allison didn’t take it. But when Harris paired him with Danny for a project worth half the semester grade , Jackson cornered him after classes and said if Danny’s grades tank because of him that he’ll have the entire lacrosse team “beat his ass”. During lunch Scott was too busy staring at Allison to notice him so he basically ate alone despite being surrounded by people.

The rest of the week just seemed to never end and when Scott canceled game night on Friday for “Studying” (read trying to get Alison on a “Study Date”) he was about ready to burst into tears and give up.

———

It took approximately 5 days and 3 hours for the Sheriff to call Derek Hale.

In the end it wasn’t his wife who convinced him to call it was that Friday night with his Son.

The sheriff had come home after his shift and expected to hear Stiles yelling at whatever game he was playing with Scott. But the house was quiet, too quiet for a Friday night so he quickly checked the kitchen to see if Stiles was just getting some food before heading up to his son’s room. And there Stiles was just typing away on his computer but the look on his face made it clear that something was wrong. He just looked… dead? No, that wasn’t it… empty. As if he gave something everything he had just for it to disappear when he had nothing left to give.

“Hey, kiddo. What’s going on. It’s Friday shouldn’t you be playing with Scott?”

“He canceled.”

“Really?”

“He had plans.”

“But you always game on Friday. Why didn’t he have made the plans for another day?”

“Allison.” The bitterness in his voice startled the sheriff to his core. It wasn’t often he spoke in that tone of voice. But he was also angry on his son’s behalf. Scott had been dating this girl for less than a month now and he was already canceling plans with his best friends for her? What was wrong with that kid.

“Sorry kiddo, maybe we can all go out to eat at the diner with the curly fries you like when your mom gets home.” Stiles didn’t even make a comment on how it would affect his health like normal (He had been hounding him since the doctor mentioned if he didn’t change his diet that he wouldn’t make it past 65) which was how he knew just how much this was upsetting him.

The Sheriff turned to leave but just as he reached the door Stiles spoke. “I don’t blame them you know. Scott or Allison. It’s not really their faults.” The Sheriff was about to interrupt that it was Scott’s fault, having a girlfriend was no excuse for ignoring his childhood friend when Stiles continued. “I get it they want to spend time together, apparently it’s both of their first relationships. Not that it excuses Scott ignoring me but I understand it. I just miss him, miss my friend. He even forgot my birthday but when he realizes that he’s going to do everything he can to make it up to me. He’s a good guy like that. And if I’m being completely honest I’m jealous. I wish that someone would look at me the way they look at each other. And I swear this isn’t just me feeling like I’m missing out. But I want to love someone like that and have them love me back. I see the relationship you and mom have and I want that so much. From the bottom of my heart I want that. Have ever since I was little. The ‘happily ever after’ always was my favorite part of the fairytale I guess. Sorry I’m just rambling now.”

Stiles turned away and the sheriff knew that he was done talking about it. He knew what he had to do even if he didn’t like it. He knew Claudia was ok with it since she hadn’t stopped bringing it up all week. So he went to his room shut the door and made a phone call.

———

Derek could act as if he didn’t have his phone with him at all times waiting for a phone call, but it would have been a lie. The entire week after speaking to Stiles parents he was on edge and it didn’t help that his wolf was getting more and more agitated the longer he waited.

“YOU ARE DUMB! SHOULD HAVE ALREADY CLAIMED MATE. SHOULD HAVE CLAIMED HIM THE DAY WE MET HIM! NOW WE NEVER HAVE HIM”

“Soon I promise” Derek tried. He had said this before but his wolf was done with waiting and excuses.

“NO, MATE NOW WAIT LATER”

Before Derek could continue trying to placate his wolf so he didn’t get arrested for trying to “mark” Stiles, his phone started ringing. Derek’s heart leapt to his throat when he saw it was an unknown number.

“Hello?”

“Derek, this is Sheriff Stilinski.”

“Oh, good evening sir.” Derek was glad this was happening over the phone or he was sure the sheriff would see he was sweating bullets.

“Were you serious about dating my son?”

“Yes sir.” Derek thought his hands might have been shaking at this point, but he couldn’t be sure because he was so focused on the call.

“If I agree to let you date him there are going to be some ground rules, understood.”

“Of course sir, any boundary you set I promise I will uphold.”

“Would you just relax kid, you sound like I’m holding you at gun point. First of all if you ask him out and he says no you back off, immediately and permanently. Secondly if he does agree to date you no sex until he turns eighteen. Thirdly he may be a teenager but you will respect him as an adult, because this is an adult relationship I would presume anyway. Oh and if you ever hurt him, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally you will wish you were dead. Am I clear?”

“Yes sir.”

“Good in that case you officially have my blessing to ask him out. Don’t hurt him or else.”

The phone line went dead before Derek could respond. Despite the threats, Derek felt stupidly optimistic about the future he couldn’t stop smiling.

“I’m going to go pick up Cora from that party at her friends house, see you soon Der.” Laura said as she grabbed the keys. Suddenly Derek had an idea.

“Don’t worry about it I’ll go get her.” This would be a chance for him to talk to her some more about Stiles. And he would have someone to tell about his excitement at asking Stiles out.

“I don’t know what the two of you are planning Derek, but you know you can’t hide anything from me for too long.”

“Don’t worry I shouldn’t have to keep it a secret much longer”

“Aha! So there is something going on!”

“Goodbye Laura” Derek said as he grabbed the car keys.

It didn’t take long to get to the party Cora was at, she was a bit confused at seeing him instead of Laura but he saw when she caught onto his idea.

“You know I already told you most of what I know about Stiles right.”

Derek grunted as they pulled onto the main road home. “I know but I need your help, I got permission to ask him out and I need to think of good first date ideas to sweep him off his feet.”

“Uh-uh, it’s your date, your boyfriend, your first impression and your call.”

“But Cora-wait you said most of what you know about Stiles dose that mean your holding out on me?”

“Well there is one tidbit of information that I think you would find, very… interesting.”

“Cora” Derek growled

“Ah ah ah, if you want this one you have to do my dish duty for a month.”

“How do I know it’s worth the price.”

“If you don’t wolf out when I say it you get out of your side of the deal.”

“Really? That’s it.” Derek didn’t like to brag but control was one of his specialties. It had to be when constantly surrounded by his annoying siblings and cousins.

“That’s it”

“Deal”

“Stiles is a virgin”

Derek immediately felt his eyes flash and his claws pop out. His wolf immediately joining the conversation.

“Mate is untouched?” His wolf asks, “waited for us? Such a good mate.”

Meanwhile Cora cackled at Derek’s reaction. Like the she devil she is. It took a few seconds for Derek to reign in his wolf enough to pull back his claws but his eyes stayed firmly gold.

“Guess your doing my dish duty for a month”

Derek didn’t deny it. “Really? But he’s so pretty how has no one-“

“Nope, stop right there I do not need to know what you think about my classmate’s sexual history, or any fantasies you have involving him.”

“That kid is going to be the death of me.”

Derek spent the rest of the night trying to decide how to ask Stiles out and where they would go if he said yes.

Chapter 7: Dates

Summary:

Derek finally asks Stiles out. The only questions are will he say yes, and if so where will Derek take him?

Chapter Text

It didn’t take long before Derek couldn’t wait any longer to ask Stiles out. His wolf had been (somewhat) patient long enough, and now he was urging him to hurry up and go to Stiles. So after much deliberation he decided that simple was best way to ask Stiles out. He knew from what Cora had told him that Stiles was as interested in comics and other “super sad nerd stuff” like he was. So he went to his comic book collection pulled out one of his favorite first edition Batman comics, gathered his courage, and went to wait outside the police station. If what Cora told him was true, then it wouldn’t be long before Stiles brought his dad lunch like he did most Saturdays, well, other than when he had plans with Scott.

‘claim mate now?’ his wolf asked

‘No, but now we can court mate. I know you know what that means so don’t try to play dumb. That’s why we’re bringing him a gift.’

‘Yes, can court mate,’ his wolf was practically wagging its tail in his mind, ‘will show mate we are worthy of him.’

‘Yep that’s right. So you’ll let me have control so we can court him?’

‘Yes.’

‘Thank you.’

Just then he caught a whiff of Stiles scent, it was just as heady as it was the first time he tracked it. He looked left and right while he waited for him. He saw an old blue jeep pull into the station and felt himself frown. That couldn’t be Stiles car could it? It didn’t look safe ant all and might break down at any moment, and he didn’t like the idea of that car stranding his mate somewhere he couldn’t reach. Or what if he was in danger and it just didn’t start… no he would have to fix the jeep or buy him a new car or something.

He was only a little disappointed when Stiles did in fact get out of the blue jeep but he was more excited than anything. The boy had clearly saw him and was walking towards him. Derek couldn’t help but ogle the boy as he walked up, he didn’t understand how no one else had tried to date him before. He was stupidly attractive with long lean muscles and pale skin dotted with moles. Derek forced himself to look up and focus on Stiles face but that didn’t mean that he didn’t notice that he was carrying a paper bag, presumably with his dad’s lunch.

“Hey Derek, what are you doing here? Wait, you’re not here to file a report are you? Oh, god. Of course you are. Why else would you go to a police station? You’re not hurt are you? You don’t look hurt. Did something happen? Is your family ok? If you are here to file a report I can definitely get you a fast pass. I know like everyone here.”

Derek couldn’t help but laugh at Stiles babbling, he felt a little bad at the pout on Stiles face at being laughed at, but he sure did look cute when he pouted. He was glad that Stiles spoke first it really helped calm his nerves.

“Everyone is fine and so am I Stiles. I actually came here hoping to see you.”

“Me, why? Wasn’t seeing me last Saturday enough for you. Usually people can only stand so much of me before they go crazy. Two Saturdays in a row on such short notice might be bit much for you big guy.”

Derek felt himself grinning, but couldn’t stop himself even if he looked a bit wolfish. Having Stiles call him big guy made him blush a little but it was nice. “Yes, I’m here to see you Stiles. As for the why, I was hoping to ask you out on a date.”

———

Stiles felt his mouth drop open, and he just stared at Derek for a few minutes or maybe it was just seconds. He couldn’t tell, time no longer mattered because clearly the fabric of the universe was falling apart.

“I’m sorry, what? I’m pretty sure that I misheard you. Because I thought you just said that you were here to ask me out. On a date. Like Romantically. Which is absolutely insane because first off. You look like that.” He said gesturing at the older man (read, flailing wildly in his general direction) “And I am just some meat thrown on gangly bones who talks too much. And secondly you just asked me out in front of the police station. Where my dad works. You know, the Sheriff. Along with dozens of deputies, who all work for him. Who all could and would have your ass thrown in jail for asking out his underage son. In front of the police station, where ANYONE could hear you.” He emphasized. “POLICE STATION”

But Derek just gave him a little frown and head tilt in response before properly responding. “First of all I don’t know what you are trying to say when you say I ‘look like that’ and your just ‘meat thrown on some gangly bones’, but you couldn’t possibly be trying to tell me that your not attractive. Because where ever you got that idea it’s dead wrong. Especially considering how absolutely gorgeous you are, so don’t for a second think that I am not interested in you. As for the second issue you have. I already talked to your parents and got their permission to ask you on a date. I also talked to my sister Cora and she has no qualms about me dating one of her classmates. So don’t worry about your parents opinion or your classmate’s, this decision is entirely up to you. So Stiles Stilinski would you do me the honors of allowing me take you out on a date?”

“You really went to my parents and asked for permission?” Even to his own ears it sounded more like a statement than a question.

“Yes.”

“That’s… really sweet and only a little creepy. I really appreciate that you really thought this through and went to them to make sure it’s ok, but before I answer I need to know that you’re sure about this. I am a hand full on my good days and on my bad, good fucking luck trying… well anything really. And if we’re being honest, with your looks you could have anyone you want, so why would you want me?”

———

Derek didn’t know where Stiles had gotten all of these insecurities, but he didn’t like it. It was clear that someone had said these things to Stiles and if he ever found out who he would make them regret making Stiles doubt himself. But it was clear that Derek was going to have to reassure Stiles a lot about his feelings for him.

“Can you look me in the eyes. Please.” He waited for Stiles to lift his eyes from where he had planted them on the ground during his little rant. “Stiles Stilinski you are one of the most gorgeous people I have ever laid my eyes on. And on top of that you are clearly ridiculously loyal, you proved that when you defended your bff to a complete stranger when they ditched you on your birthday. You’re funny as hell, I have never smiled as much as I have in the few minutes that I have spent listening to you. And I’m sure that there are a million more things for me to learn about you so believe me when I say that I want to date you and I’m not changing my mind anytime soon. So I’ll ask again, will you let me take you out on a date?”

“Ok”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I’ll go out with you.”

“Awesome, are you free tomorrow?”

“No, I have plans with Scott every Sunday evening, but if you want I’m free after school Monday.”

“All right it’s settled then, Monday at 4:00 I’ll pick you up from your house and take you out. Dress casually, something like you’re wearing now is fine.”

“Ok” Stiles was clearly blushing and Derek wanted to taste him he looked so delectable.

“I won’t keep you much longer but I did grab something for you” Derek said as he reached for the package by his feet.

Stiles very obviously rolled his eyes and said “I’m not some blushing maiden Derek, you don’t need to buy me flowers or chocolate or some other girly shit.”

“Just open the package.” He said as he shoved it in Stiles hands.

“Fine but I swear if it’s another stuffed ani- HOLY SHIT, is this a first edition. Oh my gosh this is like a collectors item!” Stiles was practically jumping up and down as he held the comic book. He was clearly vibrating with excess energy, and Derek felt proud of himself for being able to elicit such a strong reaction from his mate with just one gift.

“I thought you might appreciate this more than some ‘girly shit’” he said with more than a little smirk.

“Oh my god, tell me you’re a comic nerd too! Which is better Marvel or DC? Do you have a favorite hero? Who’s the best villain? Wait, shit! I need to go give my dad his lunch before he comes looking for me, he already knew that I was on my way over here.” He started walking towards the door but stopped just before going inside. “Oh and Derek, Thank you. I don’t have this comic and it really does mean a lot.”

Derek just smiled as he walked towards his truck, he had a date and he was going to make sure that it was the best first date of all time. He may have to ask Laura to borrow her Camaro, because as Awesome and practical as his truck was, nothing swept people off their feet like a Camaro did.

———

Stiles was still reeling over the last few minutes of his life. He just got asked out on a date. By someone who looked like they were made in a factory that only made perfect people. How was this his life?

He made sure to school his face out of the stupid smile he was sure he was wearing and went to talk to his dad.

“Hey, dad brought your lunch. Like always. Same way I do every Saturday. Because it’s a completely normal thing that I’m doing. Right now.”

His did didn’t even bother looking up from his work. “What did you do this time?”

Stiles flailed and let out a shocked gasp. “Me? Do something? What do you take me for a heathen?”

His dad just gave him a side eye.

Stiles sighed “Fine, I have a question. Did you really give Derek Hale permission to ask me out or did he make that up.”

“Wow, he really didn’t wait to ask you out very long. Yes, your mother and I did give him permission. He asked last week when you were at Scott’s on Sunday. But we said no and only gave him permission last night.”

“Oh huh what do you know”

“So did you say yes?”

“Daaaaaaaad”

“Stiles”

“Fine, yes I said yes.” Stiles knew he was as red as a tomato and staring at the wall might not have been helping him, but it felt like it did so he didn’t look away from it.

“Ok, if he tries anything-“

“Dad. I know. He wouldn’t dare. But if he did I would kick him in the balls and then tell you. But you’re really ok with me dating another guy?”

“Of course whatever makes you happy is good enough for me. So what did you bring me for lunch today?”

“Tuna sandwichs”

“As in plural?!”

“Yep”

“Stiles” his dad sighed exasperated.

———

Derek felt like he was floating on cloud nine when he got home. Right up until he walked through the front door to his twin staring him down.

“Derek it is just you, Cora, and I in this house at the moment, and I am done letting you keep this secret you’ve had for the past week. So while everyone else is gone you’re going to tell me. We’re twins we never keep stuff from each other, especially not big stuff and whatever you’re hiding seems to be a big deal considering how you pulled Cora in on it.”

Suddenly Derek had an idea, this was perfect. “ I’ll tell you but you have to follow two conditions”

“What are they.”

“I get to use the Camaro for one day of my choice, and the second condition is that you have to keep it a secret from the rest of the family until I’m ready. If you fail to uphold either of these you have to do any one thing I ask regardless of what it is.”

Laura thought about this, but she was clearly struggling with the idea of having him use her Camaro. Then she made a counter offer.

“You get the Camaro for half the weekday of your choice, and I agree to keep your secret for one month. If you still haven’t told everyone by then, then I get to spill the beans to everyone.”

“Deal, a month is more than enough time. Let’s go talk in the living room.”

Cora was already on the couch when they got there.

“So the big secret is that I found my mate.”

“WHAT. NO. YOU’RE KIDDING.”

“Nope I actually found him. He’s one of Cora’s classmates that’s why I told her, so I could ask her about him.”

“HIM, eh.”

“I already made that joke.” Cora piped up from the couch. “Although unless I’m mistaken you went to ask Stiles out today how did it go? I’m assuming it went well since you don’t smell absolutely heart broken.”

“Yeah, I have a date on Monday night. Which is when I’m taking the Camaro, to pick him up thank you very much Laura. And then I have to take him out on one amazing first date.”

Derek spent the rest of the day catching up Laura about Stiles.

Really neither of the boys could have been happier that Saturday.

———

*That night at the Stilinskis*

“I don’t know Claudia, I feel like he should know about all this.”

“And he will John, but there’s nothing he can do and you know how he is. He’ll spend all his time researching and reading and he won’t do anything for himself but worry. My treatment plan starts in January. Let’s wait to tell him until after Christmas so that the holidays aren’t ruined. Plus this will give him time to settle into his first relationship without being too focused on me.”

“Fine, one week after Christmas Day then.”

“Thank you, John, that sounds like the best plan.”

Chapter Text

Monday couldn’t come soon enough. Stiles had been waiting all weekend long. He was anxious and he couldn’t get all of the questions out of his mind. Where would they go for their date? Should he eat beforehand or would they eat on the date? What should he wear? He knew that Derek had dress casual, but he should still put some thought into what would wear right?

oh, and then there was a conversation with his mom.

“So your dad called mischief.”

“Whatever he told you he’s lying. I did not torture him. I just forced him to eat healthy food and no healthy food is not torture.”

His mom chuckled at that and he grinned at making her laugh, “Actually, I was referring to a certain young man asking you out. It took me forever to convince your dad to let him.”

“You knew too,” Stiles groaned, “You have to tell me this stuff! How else am I supposed to know if hot older guys are into me?”

“Because they would be foolish not to be. And as for Derek. He was respectful and polite and asked if he could take you out first, that is the only reason he got permission so don’t expect just any ‘older guys’ to be allowed to date you.”

“Yeah, whatever it’s not like anyone else lining up to date me.”

“I’m sure there are plenty of people who wanna date you! Did you think that Derek was interested in you?”

“Well, no, but you saw the guy! Can you blame me?”

“Well, it’s obvious that there’s no getting through to your thick skull,” His mom sighed, “But while we’re on the topic of romantic interests, whatever happened to your… crush… on Lydia?”

“It’s still there. But I also had a rather large crush on Derek not quite the size of my crush on Lydia but that was just because there wasn’t enough time for it to develop. And if things don’t work out with Derek, I’ll probably go back to buying expensive gifts for Lydia. And if things DO work out with Derek then I imagine my feelings for Lydia will fade as my feelings for him grow.”

“All right, all right I’ll stop nagging you but I do have one last question. How do you feel about your upcoming date?”

“Honestly, I’m excited but also so nervous.”

He spent the rest of the weekend, super anxious. Even on his Sunday night with Scott.(And also Allison) He couldn’t focus. Fortunately, because his best friend was so obsessed and tunnel vision on Allison, he didn’t notice his inner turmoil.

Monday finally came, he was terrified. He spent the entire day feeling like school couldn’t go by fast enough. The hours just seem to drag on and on and he even came close to getting a couple detentions in Mr. Harris’s class. Fortunately, because he was so worried about missing his date with Derek, Mr. Harris couldn’t find anything to call him out on. He even managed to avoid Jackson for most of the day.

After school he rushed home because he knew he only had an hour to get ready before Derek came to pick him up. So he got a quick 15 minute shower and then spent the next 35 minutes picking out an outfit.

In the end, he wore a T-shirt with a faded captain America shield on the front that had shrunk in the dryer, so it was a little tight on him, and clung to his shoulders, and road up a little when he stretched. He paired it with a pair of baggy jeans that even with a belt wrote a little low on his sides. While he knew he wasn’t the most attractive person if there was one thing that he loved about his body. It was his hips, so of course, he made sure that his outfit accented it so whenever he stretched, his shirt would rise a little and his with the help of his pants, his hips would be highlighted.

He spent the last 10 minutes on the minor things like brushing his hair and teeth. When he finally went downstairs, he saw a black Camaro, pulling into his driveways at promptly 4 o’clock.

“Fuck, you have to be kidding me! Even his car is sexy! There has to be at least one thing that isn’t sexy about him. So unfair.” he muttered to himself.

He didn’t even notice Derek blush and fumble at his comment.

———

Derek was a nervous wreck Monday. He had so many questions rushing through his mind. What if he doesn’t like what I planned for us today? I know he has ADHD from what I’ve been told, so is there anything I need to look out for with that? Should I ask him? Would that be rude? He was from a family of werewolves, no one taught him this kind of stuff.

Derek sighed, he would just have to wait and bring up his questions later.

He knew he should probably be embarrassed that he took off work two hours earlier than usual to get ready, but with his wolf’s nagging to show off for his mate and his excitement, he just couldn’t find it in himself to feel shame.

In the end Derek cursed himself for not taking up his sisters offer of a shopping spree to “totally redo your closet” because as they had claimed it really wasn’t a good idea to just live out of a bunch of Henley’s and tight jeans. Since he didn’t really have many options he grabbed a one of the clean Henley's and a pair of his tighter jeans before leaving his room.

Finally he practically bounced down stairs and yelled to Laura “I’m leaving with the Camaro now, thanks again!”

“Whatever, Dork, I’m so grilling you for details later!” She yelled after him as he ran out the door.

Derek didn’t want to be late, but he also didn’t want to be the creep who shows up half an hour early. So he parked about a block away and waited for the last 25 minutes.

“Going to mate now?” His wolf asked.

“Yes, we’re going to court him remember. So that means we can’t claim him today.”

“Yes. Show mate we can provide and protect him.” His wolf was practically shaking with excitement in his head. It was making him fidgety and antsy.

When he finally pulled into the driveway he heard Stiles muttered comment and nearly dropped the keys to the Camaro. He could feel his cheeks heat but his wolf was just preening at the positive attention. He took a deep breath to calm himself before walking up to the door and knocking.

Stiles answered the door, “Hey, Derek, wow you look great! Also, Seriously a Camaro, you’re making my baby look bad. My baby’s my Jeep… if that wasn’t clear. But I’m totally cool with taking the Camaro because really, when will I get a chance like that again. To ride in style and all that… yeah I’m just gonna shut up now, before I say something really embarrassing.”

Throughout Stiles speech, Derek’s was stuck on Stiles outfit. It really showed of his shoulders and accented his waist where his eyes kept snapping back whenever he flailed and his shirt rose a little exposing some skin that Derek wanted to mark with pretty bruises or beard burn or just in general really. When he finally realized that he should probably respond to Stiles he forced his eyes up to his face which had acquired a pretty blush from embarrassment at his rambling and just made him look all the more delectable to Derek.

“Please, your ‘Baby’, as you call it, was making itself look bad long before I came along.”

Stiles over exaggerated mock offense, and to Derek’s delight flailed even more as he proclaimed “How dare you! First of all my baby is a she, not an ‘it’ and second of all she has taken very good care of me over the years!”

“I’m sure.”

“She has!”

“Really, ok. How often has she broken down on you?”

“Not as much as yo-“

“That also includes just not starting in general.” Derek interrupted.

“…”

Derek just laughed at Stiles lack of response. So Stiles stuck out his tongue at him. Derek couldn’t help but laugh harder at that and even Stiles a smile tugging on his lips.

“Yeah whatever, stop making fun of her. So are you ready to go?”

“Leaving isn’t going to get me to stop teasing you about it- sorry her. But yes if you’re ready then we can leave.”

“Oh don’t worry, this conversation isn’t over it’s just… on hold for now. And yes I’m ready.

“All right let’s go.”

Derek led Stiles to the car and opened the passenger door for him.

“I’m not some princess you have to impress you know. You don’t have to open doors and crap for me.”

“I know, but this is my sister’s car and she made it clear that if I don’t handle it with the utmost care then she’ll have my head on a platter.”

———

‘Ha, I knew it,’ thought Stiles ‘No one can look like that and have a sexy car’

“So if this is your Sisters car then do you not have a car?”

“Technically no I don’t have a car, but I do have a really nice truck. I tend to look for things that are more practical and I like having the ability to move stuff around like I can with my truck. My twin and I both got given a car of our choice for our twentieth birthdays. Laura chose this Camaro and I chose a truck. As much as I love my truck it’s not really first date material so I made a deal with Laura so I could borrow the Camaro for the evening.”

“Oh,” Stiles said out loud before muttering under his breath, “Dammit a truck is sexy too.”

He noticed when Derek made a chocked noise and the tips of his ears burned red.

“OH MY GOD YOU HEARD THAT!” Stiles was mortified. “Dude you have some ridiculous hearing. And let’s just forget what I just said.” Stiles was sure that he was beet red

Derek couldn’t help it and burst out laughing.Stiles just slouched in his seat.

Derek eventually gave Stiles mercy and changed the topic, “So do you want to stop for food before or after we-… after the main attraction.”

“Probably after I’m not hungry at the moment , but what are we doing anyway?”

“What and ruin the surprise? No way.”

“Oh come on, I hate surprises, it’s why I always annoy Scott or dad until one of them caves and tells me.”

“Do you actually hate surprises or are you just saying that so I tell you what we’re doing?”

“No I actually can’t stand surprises, they make me nervous and anxious. Because all I do is overthink them and then I put too much pressure on myself to like them. And I overthink what they could be and stress myself out about whether or not I’ll act the right way whenever I finally see them. By the time I actually get the surprise I’ve already stressed myself out so much that I can’t even enjoy the actual activity or gift.”

“Oh, well follow up question. Do you only like surprises you know about before hand like this date or if someone says something like ‘I have a surprise for you later’? Or are surprises that you don’t know about bad too? like if I gave you a gift you weren’t expecting but you don’t have time to think about before unwrapping it. Because if you don’t have time to overthink the surprise it shouldn’t be too bad right?”

Stiles thought about it for a second. “ I guess those aren’t bad. It’s surprises that I know are coming in the future that freak me out.”

“All right good to know, I just won’t let you know about any surprises I have planned beforehand then.”

“Ok, oh and same thing goes for open ended statements like ‘we need to talk when I get home’ I worked myself up into a panic attack once when my dad said that because he wanted to talk about a camping trip we had coming up.”

“You have panic attacks?!” Stiles was touched by the concern in Derek’s voice, it made something inside him feel warm.

“Yeah, not very often though. I haven’t had one in a couple years now. It started after my dad’s doctors told him if his diet didn’t change then he would only have a couple of decades left, and I freaked out he wouldn’t be here when I got my degree, got married or had kids. I have since got my dad healthier than before and so I don’t worry about it as much.”

———

Derek could here his own voice was soft when he asked “What are they like?”

“Scary, I feel like there’s a weight on my chest keeping me from getting my lungs full and I feel like I’m suffocating. Fortunately for me my dad, mom, or Scott was always there to talk me through it.”

Derek’s wolf was not happy with the thought of him being attacked by something that he could do anything to help with so he instantly locked onto the last thing he said. “Talk you through it?”

Stiles was staring at his lap when he spoke “Yeah, you know breathing exercises and stuff.”

“Would you be willing to take the time to teach me how to sometime.” Stiles eyes snapped to his face.

“You really want to learn? Even though I haven’t had one in years, you would still learn.”

Derek felt himself frown at that “Of course, just because it hasn’t happened in a while doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. And I want to be able to help if it does. Why wouldn’t I want to?”

“Because we are only on our fist date and your already willing to take so much time learn something that you might never even need just in case for me.”

“Because I care about you and your health.”

“Oh”

“All right last question then we can move on to happier topics. What are signs of a panic attack that I need to look out for?”

Stiles was still clearly dazed from the rest of the conversation “uhhh… quicker breathing slash gasping. Me sliding to the ground and getting in a defensive or fetal position.”

“All right and you’ve been so distracted talking you didn’t even notice that we’re arriving at our destination,” Derek said as he turned into the parking lot, “meaning that I get to keep my surprise and you didn’t have time to stress yourself out over it.” Derek couldn’t stop the smug grin taking over his face.

Chapter 9: The First Date Part 2

Summary:

The actual Date

Chapter Text

Stiles looked out of the Camaros window as they parked and was met with a large building with flashing lights and in large letters spelling out “ALMOND ARCADE”. He was pretty sure that this was larger than any building he had seen in town.

“Whoa, this isn’t beacon hills, is it?” Stiles asked, “Ive been all over Beacon Hills and ive never been here. Pretty sure i would remember it if I had. This place is huge.” He had to hold himself back from ditching Derek and this date to just go into this massive arcade. The only time that he had ever been in a arcade even half this size, was when he was on vacation with his family and managed to get them to go with him.

“No, we are actually just outside Beacon hills. One of the first things you mentioned when we met was how there was no where left that was actually fun in Beacon Hills that you haden’t been to, so I figured that going outside of town might be just what you needed. I did a little research and learned that the biggest arcade in the state was less than an hour away and thought it would be fun considering how we met.” Derek was actually pretty proud of his choice for a date and from the look of it Stiles was happy too.

“Dude this is so cool but you should know that I am totally going to ignore you in favor of playing all the games here. Like I’ll try to be attentive but I can already tell you my ADHD is going to have me going from one shiney arcade game to another.”

Derek just chuckled before responding, “Thats fine, you get to have a good time and I get to watch you have fun and share in your excitement.” Stiles felt himself blush at the sweet sentiment, “Although im totally going to beat you in some of those games.” And just like that Stiles embarrassment was replaced with sheer determination and competitiveness.

“Bring it on, I haven’t had good competition in years and I doubt you’ll be able to beat me.”

— — —

Derek felt his wolf perked up at the thought of showing off for Stiles.

“Its cute that you think that but I am not only going to crush you in these games but I'm also going to use my winnings against you to get you another stuffed animal.” So what if Derek had a few enhanced reflexes, his advantage was all natural, and shouldn’t be counted against him.

“Oh, are trying to win me over in soft plushies or are you going to try to suffocate me in them.”

“Whichever comes first I guess” Derek could feel himself smiling, he just couldn’t help it when Stiles were around. “Even if that is my plan we should go ahead into the arcade so that we can started.”
Derek felt a little presumptuous grabbing Stiles hand to lead him into the arcade but when Stiles gripped back he felt better. After leading them into the arcade and paying for there tickets he asked Stiles what he wanted to do first. Stiles said that he was the king of Dance Dance Revolution and that was where he planned the beginning of Dereks butt kicking. It turned out that they were pretty evenly matched at the game. After playing a few rounds Stiles ended up winning by one match. What Derek didn’t tell him was that he was distracted by Stiles hips because his shirt kept riding up whenever he moved too quickly, and what Derek didn’t know was that this was exactly what Stiles had planned when he suggested Dance Dance Revelution.

They stayed in the arcade for a few more hours, In the end Stiles was better at any of the gun based games or any of the ones involving screens, but Derek kept up by beating him at air hockey and other more Athletic ceneterd games like the basketball toss and the hammer swing games. All the while derek had been subtly scenting Stiles so that his wolf would get off his back. When Derek noticed that Stiles seemed to be getting tired even though he tried to deny it, he convinced him to get ready to go so they could get dinner before Derek dropped him back off at home for the evening. Especially since he had school the next day. They both went up to the prize counter with there tickets, and sure enough Derek looked for and found another stuffed animal for Stiles. Meanwhile Stiles used up his tickets on a bunch of different cheap candies that he figured he and Derek could share.

Afterward Derek took them to this little Diner that served Breakfast all day and had some of the best curley fries and milkshakes around. They talked for another hour while they ate but neither could really bring themselves to care. Finally as Derek drove Stiles home and entered the driveway he decided to ask the question that had been bugging him since he left the Diner.

“So, I’d say we had a pretty good time or at least I did, and I was wondering if we could go out on second date this Saturday?” Derek was both terrified and excited for Stiles answer.

“ok, but only if I’m the one taking you out this time.” Stiles had no idea why he had said that, he didn’t even know where he would take him, or if his Jeep was up to the task of taking anyone out on a date.

Derek blushed but couldn’t help the smile forming on his face “I’d like that, also I should probably walk you to the door before your Dad decides he's waited long enough to come out here and shoot me.”

“You don’t have to. I don’t need you to keep me from from getting mugged on the way to my driveway, like i said before i’m not a girl.”

Derek got out and opened Stiles door anyway “You keep saying things like that, ‘I’m not a girl’. I know that, just like you know I’m not a girl. Were just two guys on a date, and I like being able to open the door and things like that for you. I'm not doing it because you can't do it yourself, I’m doing it because it makes me feel good to get to be around you and do stupid small things for you. So whatever it is your thinking about me thinking less of you or anything like that, stop. I promise its nothing other than me wanting to be around you and finding any excuse I can. Ok?”

“Oh, sorry, I didn’t realize that I was doing that so much. Your one of the first guys that Ive really been attracted to, and I thought I was handling it well but apparently I still have a couple hang ups about it that I hadn’t even realized.” Stiles felt kinda shitty for ruining the mood of the date.

“Relax its no problem, I just didnt want you think that I think less of you or anything. Anyway heres my phone number let me know when ever you plan out that second date.” He said pulling out a business card. “ Goodnight Stiles”

“What no Goodnight kiss?”
— — —-

Derek immediately had to stop himself from diving in right then and there. “I didn’t want to pressure you or anything its still our first date and all.”

“Wow, I really am going to have to be forward with you arn’t I.”

Derek knew he was blushing but he couldn’t help it “I’d appreciate that, yes”

“Derek Hale would you please kiss me,”

Derek didn’t stop himself this time leaned in and pressed his lips against Stiles lips it soft and chast, until Stiles tongue pressed against the seem of his lips. Head to hold back a groan but parted his lips and pressed back with his tongue. After another beat or two he forced himself to pull away from Stiles mouth, if he hadn’t he wouldn’t have been able to stop.

“Goodnight Stiles”

“Goodnight Derek”

— — —

Stiles couldnt believe how well his date had gone. He wanted to call up Scott and rave about it but then he thought better of it. He hadn’t even told Scott he was going on a date let alone that it was with a guy. His mom was already asleep and it would be too embarrassing to talk about it with his dad but he went to sleep with a smile on his face. He would just have to tell everyone tomorrow.

Derek drove home with a smile on his face. He got a second date with his mate his wolf was sated with the light scenting that he had managed to get on Stiles. He didn’t even care that his sisters were waiting at home to grill him on how it went, he would happily tell them about his date with his mate. And friday starts the difficult part. Telling the rest of his family. After all it would be the perfect time, his family would know about Stiles and they wouldn’t have enough time to pester Stiles before their second date and the next family dinner wouldn’t be until the next friday so he would have time to ask Stiles to meet his family.

Chapter Text

That next wednesday Stiles parents called him out of school for the day and told him that they planned to spend the whole day doing whatever he wanted to make up for forgetting his birthday. It started out with the special occasion pancakes, one set of pancakes with peanut butter, and another that they always made with cheesecake filling and strawberry syrup, if he was being honest they were more of a dessert than a breakfast but they were always too delicious to pass up. Afterwards they spent most of the morning just watching star wars (It was his and his mom’s favorite ever since she introduced him to them as a kid) and then they went out to get lunch and icecream. Next they went home to open his belated birthday gifts and play some board games. After a while his dad got up to use the restroom his mother finally decided to ask the question that had clearly been on her mind all day and probably the day before as well.

“So how was your date on Monday?” she asked with a small smirk tugging at her lips. “ I must say thet you two looked very comfortable on the front porch afterwards.”

“You saw that?!” He groaned out, “I thought you were asleep when we got back!” he could definitely feel the blush on his cheeks but he was struggling to fight off the smile that was forcing its way into his expression.

“Please it was your first date, I wouldn’t have been able to sleep if I took a whole bottle of melatonin. Also nice try but don’t avoid the question. How was your date?”

“It was really nice...” Stiles rambled on about all the everything that had happened on the date and how Derek had gotten him another stuffed animal, It was a fox this time with a bright orange coat and a pair of brown eyes that kind of reminded him of his own eyes. “... and so after I made it undoubtedly clear that I did want to be kissed he finally leaned in and kissed me. OH, and we have another date on Saturday only I’m the one planning it this time which is kind of freaking me out, because I have no idea how to plan a date.”

“Well I’m glad that it worked out for you sweetheart and don’t freak out too much about your date. After all the work that he put in to get a single date with you I doubt that Derek would give up on you after one bad date, besides if the first date description was anything to go by, you both seem to really enjoy eachothers company and he seems like would be glad just to spend time with you.”

“Maybe” Stiles could tell that his whole face must be red at this point. “But-” Just then Stiles dad came back into the room and he immediately forced himself to shut his mouth. Talking to his mom about stuff like this was one thing, but talking to his dad about it would probably end with them both dead from embarrassment. His mom tried to get them to talk about this, but more often then not they both broke before than they could finish the conversation. Fortunately his mom didn’t press the issue today and they just went back to playing games today.

— — —
Two Days Later

Today, was going to be the death of Derek. Which sucks because he had only just found Stiles and he hadn’t even been on a second date with him yet. But that didn’t change the fact that today had to be the day that he had to tell the rest of his family about him. He knew that the moment he told his family that there was going to be an uproar of questions and he wasn’t going to get a moment of peace until he had answered all of them. The introvert in him cringed, but he had a plan, announce it, push all questions over to Laura and Cora, and then flee. Really he knew that wouldn’t be happening but one could dream. Couldn’t they?

Derek knew exactly how he was going to bring it up. Because his family had these dinners every week they had a tradition per say. At the end of the dinner before everyone was dismissed his mom would always ask the same question. And sure enough that night she followed suit.

“Alright, does anyone have any announcements that they would like to make before we go off to do our own things tonight.” Talia asked the table. Blake, his youngest sibling, immediately raised his hand like he did every week. He always had something he thought was of utmost importance to share with the table and no one was wiling to shut him down. “Yes, Blake what is it.”

“I got an A on my Math test! You know the one I spent all Tuesday studying for!” everyone congratulated him on his success.

“Alright anyone else?”

Derek braced himself knowing that this was his que to raise his hand. As he raised his had his older sibling (And last Hale sibling of this fic), James, also raised his hand. He saw both Laura and Cora immediately look to him knowing what he was going to announce.

“Well then,” Chuckled their mother and alpha, “I guess that tonight is a big night for the boys, Derek you almost never announce anything, why don’t you go first.”

“Not to, ah, brag, I guess, or anything like that, but I have a feeling that if I make my announcement I have a feeling that James announcement might get pushed back or forgotten.” Derek felt like an ass for saying something like that, but he really was worried about just brushing his brothers announcement to the side.

“Oh, feeling cocky are we Der, hate to tell you but between the two of us, my announcement will definitely overshadow yours little bro. However if you insist I’ll go first.”

“I do” besides any kind of stalling was good stalling.

“Fine, I've officially gotten the job that I applied to last month, Im going to be the head research manager for New Life Pharmaceuticals.” everyone at the table got up to start congratulating him and giving him pats on the back, after all physical reassurance is what worked best with werewolves. “Sorry lil bro, Good luck beating that.” he bit out a little smugly.

Talia waited for the commotion to die down before turning to Derek, “Well, it seems you can’t put it off any longer, what did you want to announce Derek?”

Derek took a deep breath, and stedied himself before speaking. “Cora and Laura already know so they should be able to help with any questions you might have but, ah,...” Derek couldn’t stand the feeling of all the eyes of his family on him but he forced himself to continue. “ A few weeks ago I, well, I found my mate.” The entire table went dead silent. Cora and Laura watched on with amused looks, meanwhile derek battled the urge to twitch under all of there stares. And then finally after what seemed somewhere between a few seconds and an eternity the entire table erupted into questions. Derek felt like he was bombarded from all sides.

It took a few hours and a lot of help from Laura and Cora but he eventually had made it through the barrage of questions. “Well its been fun everyone but I’m going to go ahead and go to bed.”

“Oh no you don’t,” Derek stilled at the sound of his alphas voice. “I understand why you didn’t tell us but now you have had plenty of time to get know your mate on your own and I think I speak for all of us when I say that the rest of us want to meet him too.”

“Mom!”

“No, buts, Derek I expect you to invite him to family dinner next week.”

“...fine.”

“Alright, good night dear”

Well, that definitely could have gone worse. All that he had to do now was make it through his second date tomorrow. And until then he had some research to do on how to handle and help deal with panic attacks. It was rare that he had things going this well in his life and he was going to make sure that he didn’t mess it up

PLEASE NOTE: AS OF WRITING THIS CHAPTER THE TAGS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO ADD IN FALSE ACCUSATIONS OF SEXUAL ASSSAULT, MENTIONS OF HARASSMENT, HOMOPHOBIA, AND HOMOPHOBIC LANGUAGE. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION. This chapter had a bit of a mind of its own.

Derek Hale was supposed to be many things, broody, grumpy, asssholish, sarcastic, however giddy was not among those things. But there was no other word to describe the way that he was feeling in that moment because he was giddy. He was stupidly excited that his teenage mate wanted to be the one to take him on a date!

He made sure to dress casually like Stiles had recommended for their date, but he was still in the stage where he wanted to show off for him. So he also fished out a pair of jeans that were definitely a size or two too small and he forced his body to comply long enough to force the tight fabric onto his legs. He spent way too much time in the bathroom fixing his hair and practicing his smile hoping that it would be enough to convince Stiles to meet his family the next week.

As he walked down the stairs and towards his truck, Derek would never admit it to anyone but in that moment he felt like a overexited teenager for this date. He shouted a quick goodbye and headed to Stiles.

______

Stiles was panicking. There were so many things that could go wrong. What if Derek didnt like the place that he picked for the second date? What if he thought the way that Stiles was dressed was stupid? What if Stiles lost his filter at the wrong second and completely ruined everything? Derek had picked out such a perfect place for a first date, how was he even supposed to compare with that?

Welp It didn’t matter now, Derek was on his way at that very momonet all he could do was hope, pray, and believe that everything was going to be ok. And it worked! He was calming down! At least it worked until he heard the knock on the door. As he walked down the steps he wondered if these nerves would ever go away or if he would be forever plagued by eternal fear of his… date? Boyfriend? Partner? Whatever he was, rejecting him. Only when he opened the door it wasn’t Derek staring him in the face. Whoever it was bore a striking resemblance to Derek only they looked less frowny, and… female.

“Well you’re definitely cute i’ll give you that much. And your 300% Dereks type. Anyway I don’t have much time to talk before Derek gets here and tries to claw my eyes out for talking to you before next Friday but Cora had already met you and I just had to meet you myself.”

“Uh” Stiles elegantly replied

“Look are you going to invite me in or not.” the stranger said, already taking a step inside the doorway.

“Depends, who are you?”

“Hmm, oh right I'm Laura, you know, the twin.”

“OH, sorry yeah come in, I guess?”

Laura rolled her eyes before speaking, “Don’t make it sound like a question, and i've changed my mind I only have a few minutes before he gets here anyway. So I’ll make this short and snappy, hurt Derek and I will not only hurt you but your family too. Ok?”

“Uh,” huh he really needed to work on his quippy comebacks, two missed opportunities. He must really be off his game. “I mean, I don’t plan to hurt him, besides have you SEEN him, I’m lucky that Mr. Mopey even bothered to look my way.”

Laura seemed to think about this for a minute before responding “While I appreciate the sentiment, and believe me I do appreciate it, I don’t care much for the self deprecating attitude we’ll have to work on your self confidence.”

“Wow, you remind me a lot of Lydia.”

“I Don’t know who that is but if shes anything like me i'll take it as a compliment,” Laura gave him a frankly wolfish smile, “Well overall I think that i’m happy with my first impression of you so i’ll be going now. Just dont forget what we talked about today Stiles. So long as you don’t I’ll be your favorite sister in law.”

“Wait what did you mean by next Friday!” Stiles called out but Laura was already walking away.

“I don’t have any time to talk about it. I'm sure that Derek will bring it up later! Ok ciao.” Laura gave a small wave as she got back in the same Camaro Stiles had gone on his first ever date in.

“That was weird” Stiles mumbled to himself as he went back inside to wait for Derek to get there.

As Laura had predicted Derek showed up a little bit later, so Stiles went out on his porch to see him. He was smiling as he got to out of his stupid sexy truck, but then he paused for a second and tilted his head a little and suddenly frowned a very deep frown. For a second Stiles was worried that it was for him but when Derek turned and saw his face his smile firmly returned to its proper place. Feeling reassured Stiles walked down to greet him.

All right he could do this, he could flirt with his date, no problemo, he could so do this he was a flirting pro, flirt jut su master, flirting king, he so had this in the bag.

“Hey there Ho-” as Stiles went to lean against the wall his hand just barely missed the edge of the surface and Stiles was greeted with the ground at an quickly increasing speed. This is where he would die he decided. If smashing his head on the ground didn’t kill him then the pure embaressment of falling in front of his crush- nay his date would surely end him quickly. Maybe he could move away to Canada had always been somewhere he was interested in viviting, maybe starting a life there would be nice.

Though Stiles had accepted his terrible fate an arm shot out faster than it really should have been able too and caught him inches away from the ground. This amazing save did not stop the loud laugh that followed it and the corresponding embarrassment from said laugh. Stiles felt that he should save himself from this monumental embarrassment by using one of his many quippy one liners.

“Shut up”

Oh… right, his brain became complete mush around hot people which was totally unfair to him. His brain was his only weapon after all. “Well this is an amazing start to my genius date that i have planned.”

When Derek finally calmed down enough to speak he said, “What no thank you for saving your life.”

Oh that smarmy asshole. “No, no, I think I would have been better off dead anyways.”

“No, don’t say that then i’ll never get to experience that amazing date that you have planned for us today.” Derek said but he was still smiling so Stiles felt that falling might have been a win if it meant that whatever was making Derek frown was gone.

“I don’t know if you deserve that amazing date I have planned anymore.” Derek put on a clearly overdramatized pout “Then again I guess that you did stop me from needing to go to the hospital for a concusion…” Stiles took one more look at Derek and realized that he may have puppy eyes to rival Scotts “Fine, I guess we can go, go ahead and get in the Jeep and Ill start driving us to…there.”

Derek beemed at him as he got in the Jeep “There, huh? What happened to I don’t like surprises?”

“I Don’t but im guessing you do since you surprised me on our first date. Besides you kept our first date secret its only fair that I return the favor.”

Derek just laughed, “Does that mean that your really not going to tell me where were going.”

“Nope”

“Fine, I guess thats fair.”

“So I had an interesting interaction this morning. I met your sister this morning.”

Derek visibly winced “Yeah I’m not surprised.”

“Don’t be too hard on her she was just trying to protect you. Why she would think that you need to be protected from me is a complete and utter mystery to me though.”

“Sorry”

“Don’t be, however she did mention something about something happening next Friday.”

Derek suddenly shrunk in his seat, hunching his shoulders and bowing his head. “I was planning on telling you after our date because its kind of sudden and I was worried that it would ruin the fun mood that we had going. But since you know and you don’t like surprises I guess that I kind of have to tell you now. So I finally told the rest of my family about you last night and well they needled me about you for hours. Whats he look like? Whats his hair color? How smart is he? What was your first thought when you saw him? and countless other unimportant questions that wouldn’t tell them anything about you. I hoped if I told them enough about you that they would let it drop for at least a month or so , but apparently not. Long story short my family REALLY want to meet you. And they basically told me that you were “invited” to family dinner. Really there going to expect you to show up regardless of what I tell them. I mean that I could try but-”

“Derek I would love to meet your family.”

The smile on Dereks face told him that he made the right decision. “Really so soon?”

“Yes, really, but only if you meet my family next.”

“Deal, I was kind of worried my sister would have scared you off.”

Stiles couldn’t have stopped himself from laughing if he tried. “It was a close call. Both of the siblings that I have met have been pretty scary, but maybe its just a Hale woman thing since you seem like a big scowley teddy bear.”

“Stiles.”

“Theres that Grump that I like so much.” He said with a chuckle.

“Whatever.” but Stiles could see the blush coloring his cheeks
“Oh, good were almost there.”

“...The aquarium.”

“Kinda it’s more of and aquatic petting zoo! You can pet turtles, and stingrays, and manatees, and a bunch of other cool stuff. I may have lied when I said that mini golf and the arcade were the only fun things in this town. My mom used to bring me here all time as a kid but I haven’t had a chance to come back recently since my moms usually to busy to come with and its not the same if you try to experience it alone”

“It sounds like its somewhere really personal to you then, thanks for sharing it with me.”

Stiles swore when it was the two of them it was like one massive game of who would make who blush next. It was currently Stiles turn to blush. “I wanted it to be special and I couldn’t really think of anywhere else to take you without it seeming to cliche.”

“I would love to have a cliche romance with you. Long walks in the park, making out in the back of a dark movie theater, and staying up all night talking about stupid things that don’t matter. Sounds like a wonderful life.” Even as Derek spoke the words he was worried about how Stiles would react to finding out that he was a werewolf. And even if Stiles embraced his second nature with open arms their relationship would never truly be cliche but it was nice to think about.

“Awww someones getting sappy. So before I turn into a steaming pile of mush, lets go get our tickets to get inside. Also if we don’t I might not be able to stop myself from pulling you back into my Jeep and making out with you”

“That seems like an amazing second date if you ask me, but you seem to have already put a lot of time thinking and planning this so i guess we should go ahead go inside.” Derek stated with a cheeky smile.

They went into the aquatic petting zoo still laughing and teasing each other. The date had been going incredibly they spent time laughing and joking and Derek couldn’t help but be endeared at the way Stiles face lit up as he showed him his favorite enclosures. The way Dereks face always started as shocked before sofeting to wonder as he pettted the different animals was absolutely adorable to Stiles. Everything seemed to be going well until…(The urge to leave a cliffhanger here was so strong, I hope you guys are proud of me for holding off.)
______

Derek had just pulled out his phone and started recording Stiles as he entered interactive turtle enclosure where you could get in up to your knees in the water as a trained employee kept watch, when a girl dressed in a employee uniform approached him. She stopped right infront of him where he was trying to record Stiles. His wolf was not happy at the stranger interrupting his view of his mate. “Excuse me, uh” he looked down and saw her name tag “Jennifer, but I was trying to record someone so would you mind moving over.”

“I could but wouldn’t you rather if we talked a little.” She went to place her hand on his chest but he moved over and dodge her attempt at contact.

“No, I would much rather be spending time with my date.”

“Well I get off in a few hours if you were interested in getting to know eachother a bit more… intimately.” Derek was sure that she was trying to be seductive but frankly she was really starting to piss him off so he lowered his phone and turned to her.

But before he could shut her down completely Stiles had apparently taken note of the situation and spoke up before he could. “I know that you’re not used to the idea that you could actually be rejected but that what he just did so if you would kindly back the fuck off from my date so he dosen’t have be harassed by you I will in return not kick your ass.”

Derek felt that he should not be turned on by Stiles behavior, but his wolf had different ideas and was strongly affected by the way that his mate was already possessive and protective of them, and greatly liked the idea of Stiles fighting for them. Before Derek could pull Stiles into a kiss, Jennifer turned around with what Dere could only describe as a look of pure disgust on her face. “Look, sweetie, I don’t care who you think are but him,” She stated pointing a thumb at Derek, “He is way out of your league. Besides what would he want with a faggot like you. He would clearly much rather be with someone within his standards he probably only indulged you in this date because he felt sorry for you.”

Derek barley contained himself and his shift at the unbridled rage that filled him at her words he felt his eyes flash for a second but he hoped that Stiles was too focused on the bitch between them to notice. “He is so much more towards my “Standards” then you will ever be, for one he respecs my boundaries and I know that if I had told him no he would have listened instead of continuing to harass me like you. If anything he is way out of both of our leagues and I don’t need trash like you attacking him on our date so do as he asked and fuck off.”

She whirled on him so fast that for a second Derek wondered if she was actually human. “Are you seriously choosing this faggot over me?” She asked actually seeming incredulous as if the thought had never actually thought that Derek wouldn’t succumb to her charms

“No, I’m choosing my date over some bitch who doesn’t understand boundaries.”

She seemed angry and then rushed off. “Derek, I’m so so so so so so sorry that you had to go through that. I’ve been here so many times and nothi-”

“Stiles stop you didn’t do anything its her fault for not learning how to respect boundaries,”

Stiles opened his mouth to say something, but seemed to rethink it. And then spoke “Why don’t we go to the Gift shop maybe this time I can get you the plushie.”

Derek couldn’t stop the grin that spread across his face “Not if I get you a plushie first.”

They went back to jokingly poking fun at one another until they got to the gift shop. Stiles got a crystal turtle for Derek and Derek grabbed a Dolphin plushi to buy for Stiles much to Stiles dismay. As they got in line to buy the gifts three men in security outfits walked up to them with a smirking Jennifer behind them. “Sorry Gentlemen but your going to have to come with us.”

______

Stiles was absolutely furious he was about ready to stab someone and he was also ready to burst into tears. Or maybe both. As they were led into a back room he wanted to do nothing more that rip that smug grin off of queen harassments face. As they Entered a man who looked ridiculously tired as he leaned over a counter. He turned with weary eyes and spoke “We take sexual harrassment and assault accusations very seriously and were going to need you to wait here until the police get here.”

“WHAT” Derek roared, Stiles could have called it yelling but it wouldn’t have done it Justice “WHICH ONE OF US IS SHE ACCUSING OF ASSAULTING HER.”

The man who Stiles assumed was the manager spoke, “Well technically both of you” The man didn’t even seemed fazed at Dereks yelling his eyes looked as if he had been through everything about a million times “She is saying that you,” nodding to Derek, “Tried to ask her out and she shot you down but you wouldn’t take no for an answer before your friend,” gesturing to Stiles “came up and said ‘come on you know you want it’ before inappropriately touching her. And afterwards she finally ran to security begging for help.” even now the manager just looked like they would rather be anywhere else.

Dereks voice was low and cold when he finally spoke. “You said the police are coming correct.”

“Yes”

“Good, well wait.”

Stiles felt nerves building up inside him. But suddenly Derek's hand was rubbing small circles into his knee. He looked over and Derek gave him a small smile. He leaned over close to Stiles and Stiles felt his heart speed up but Derek just whispered into his ear “Don’t worry i’ve got this.

When the police finally arrived Derek stood up and spoke before anyone else could.

“Good you’re here I would like to report a hate crime.”

______

Derek loved the way Jennifer exploded at that. He couldn’t wait to wipe that ugly look off here face.

“ABSOLUTELY NOT I AM THE VICTIM HERE AND I AM THE ONE REPORTING THE CRIME.”

After Jennifer had reexplained what had happened in her words the cop turned to Derek and asked for his side of things. Derek explained what had happened from his side. After mulling it over the cop turned and spoke allowed.

“Unless either of you have any evidence of what really happened im afraid that there’s nothing we can do.”

It was then that the manager spoke up. “Regardless of weather not the charges are dropped im afraid that neither of you will be allowed back in the parkafter this.”

Derek hated the heartbroken look that took over Stiles face at that and he hated the smug look that crossed Jennifers. This had probably been her plan from the very beginning.

So of course this is when Derek decides to play his trump card.

“Then its a good thing that I was trying to film my boyfriend at the time, and caught the entire thing on video.” Derek has to fight a smile at the way that Stiles' heart stutters at boyfriend. Derek relishes in the look of pure horror that crosses Jennifers face.

While the video itself didn’t do much the audio was more then revealing in who the true culprit was. The cop turned to Derek and Stiles and asked, “Would you like to press charges against, Mrs. Jennifer here.

Neither men hesitated and both spoke at the same time “Yes”

Jennifers face distorted with rage “Curese you you dirty faggots”

“Ma’am were going to have to ask you to come with us.” the cop said before turning to Derek and Stiles “Well need a official statement from both of you. So if I could get your contact information it would be greatly appreciated.”

It was Stiles who spoke up next “My Dad’s the Sheriff if its all right i’ll speak with him about setting up a time for both Derek and I‘s statements.”

“That will be just fine.” The officer said before escorting the perpetrator out of the room.

After speaking to the manager for a little longer he offered both of the boys free life time passes to the establishments and promised that they could each get five items of there choice from the Gift Shop for free, so long as the agreed on a recording not to sue. After making the small recording the boys left with there prizes from the gift shop. Derek had in fact gotten the plushies for Stiles. But he was growing more and more concerned as Stiles had yet to speak other than for the recording.

It was when they were halfway back to Stiles house when he broke down.

His words were so bunched up that it all came out as one long sentence instead of a complete thought “I’m so sorry, it was supposed to be a nice date, and then tha bitch came along and ruined everything, and it was going to be such a good time i was going to show you all my favaorite snack shops but instead she went and accused you, I mean us of of doing that absolutely awful thing and and then the cops came and i didn’t even get to show you my favorite part of the place, its its where they keep these really really cute pufferfish and they get all puffy when you pet them and and we almost got arrested and kicked out of the place that my mom’s been taking me for years and and-”

“Stiles, honey, I was having a wonderful time with you today. You picked an amazing place for our second date and I can’t tell you how much that it meant to me that you picked somewhere so personal. It was an amazing date and frankly the only thing that im upset about is that the absolutely awful woman upset you. I promise nothing was ruined and we have the rest of our lives with these passes for you to show me all of your favorite things about there. Ok?”

“Really?” Stiles voice was small and uncertain.
“Yes, Really.”

“So you still want me to meet your family?”

“I would love to have you meet my family.”

“Ok.”

“Good.”

“Oh, and Der?”

Derek smiled at the younger man and the small nickname “Yeah?”

“Don’t call me honey thats an awful pet name.”

“Aww really no pet names.”

“I Don’t like pet names.” His heart beat stuttered.

“Really all of them?” he pressed

“I hate almost all pet names.” his heart beat was firm

“Almost, that just means that theres one you don’t mind. Sweetie.”

“There is one.” He admitted begrudgingly, “But its not sweetie.”

“I guess that I'll just have to keep going until I find it then.”

Stiles smiled and that made the whole day worth it.

Notes:

Derek gets harassed by an employee at the date that Stiles takes them on. The employee proceeds to go to security and falsely accuse them of harassment and sexual assault.

Chapter 12: Oh right Scott’s a character I should bring back up

Chapter Text

Stiles had tried to be patient. He had, but now his patience was all but gone and all that was left in its place was anger. It had been two weeks and a half since his birthday and Scott still hadn’t realized that he had forgotten it. Now at lunch on Wednesday he was about ready to go off on Scott because, in that time, he hadn’t gotten to tell him anything about Derek. He had planned to tell him four separate times over those two weeks but Scott had continually cancelled on him over and over. He hadn’t even mentioned that he realized that he was bi. So he couldn’t brag about how awesome his first date was or complain about how awful the second one ended. He couldn’t even mention how he and Derek had given their statements or how he might have to go to court because, despite the evidence against her, Jennifer was still trying to claim that she was innocent.

So, as he sat at his lunch table being completely ignored by Scott, who was nodding hypnotically to everything Allison said, he decided that he would try to talk to him privately one more time before he was left with no option but to talk to him in front of everyone. He was getting ready to try to pull Scott aside and away from Allison so that they could try to talk privately throughout lunch when someone set their lunch down across the table from him. He looked up to see the last person he would have expected sitting down, followed by a pissed-looking Jackson.

“Lydia, what are you-”

She promptly cut him off, she had decided before she even came over that she wouldn’t let herself stall, “It’s been a week and a half since you last complimented me. Usually, I would be happy for a reprieve from your… obsessive behaviors, but such an abrupt change from complimenting me daily, to seemingly moving on only happens when something extreme happens. Either the target of the affection changes or does something to discourage said behaviors but I have not changed anything about my routine or spoken to you any differently than usual.”

“You don’t speak to me.”

“Exactly, and that hasn’t, or at least hadn’t changed until now,” Lydia stated having drawn the attention of the rest of the table, as well as a couple of the tables around them, “Which means that option two is the cause of your shift. A change in the perpetrator of the affection changes in character or something happens to or around them. Seeing a change in personality takes longer than a single night and often takes a course of smaller more manageable changes rather than one large change, I doubt that that is what happened. So something happened to or around you. So, Stiles, why aren’t you complimenting me anymore?”

Oh, she was talking about Derek, “Even if something were to have changed what would it matter to you.”

“Stiles, I had to ignore you for years because I didn’t want to encourage any feelings that you have or, if I’m right, had for me. That being said you are almost as smart as me and you actually give me a run for my money when it comes to valedictorian. I’m fairly certain that you and I could be extremely good friends if something has happened to dissuade any feelings that you had for me. So answer the question. Why aren’t you complimenting me anymore?”Stiles felt himself blush when all eyes turned to him, Scott wearing the confused puppy expression that Stiles had grown accustomed to. Stiles couldn’t see a way out of this conversation.

“I just didn’t think that my boyfriend would appreciate me complimenting my former crush as frequently as I used to.” A myriad of expressions ranged at the table. Lydia looked like the cat that caught the canary, Allison looked almost vindicated like she had guessed this all along, and Scott looked confused and more than a little upset about this revelation. Jackson surprisingly the only one not to outwardly react, Stiles expected… well he didn’t know what but something from him. It actually felt nice that someone didn’t suddenly change over the fact that he came out of the closet. Lydia opened her mouth to comment on something but before she could Scott loudly interrupted.

“But you don’t like guys! You would have told me if you had!”

Stiles could feel his eyes rolling in an attempt to get away from the stupidity that had just come out of Scott’s mouth. “Yes, Scott I would have told you if you hadn’t canceled the last time we were supposed to hang out together, or the time before that, or any of the times that we were supposed to hang out over the past couple of weeks.”

Scott felt himself blush at the direct call out and at the fact that he couldn’t rebuke it. “Oh, I hadn’t realized that I had canceled so much… sorry.”

“Whatever.”

“Stiles rea-”

This time it was Jackson who spoke up, “Look I can believe most of this, but Stilinski having a boyfriend? I don’t buy it, Danny would have told me if any of the guys at school were getting with Stilinski.”

“ That’s because he doesn’t go to school.” Stiles blurted out feeling like he had to defend himself. It was only a couple of seconds later he realized what he had just admitted. Scott was still staring at him looking anxious and sheepish.

“You mean that he doesn’t go to school here, right?” Allison offered and gave him a look, Stiles wasn’t sure if she was actually correcting him, but deep down he knew that she was offering him an out if he didn’t want to admit that his boyfriend wasn’t in school.

“...No, I meant what I said.” Stiles noticed that Lydia got that look on her face that said that she was on the trail of some hot gossip and wasn’t about to let it get away. Jackson spoke before she could though.

“I’m still not buying it.”

“ I don’t care if you believe me or not, he’s picking me up after school anyway.” Stiles felt his foot start tapping having realized what he had just claimed. Jackson looked too shocked to speak for a moment. Lydia took this as her opportunity to get back to her gossip.

“You said earlier that he didn’t go to school, As in he dropped out, or as in you’re dating an older guy who graduated.” The smile on her face had Stiles wondering whether he should just shut his mouth or not. Welp in for a penny in for a pound.

“An older guy who graduated,” he admitted, Scott looked furious, “ We’ve been on two dates.”

“AN OLDER GUY SERIOUSLY STILES, WHAT WOULD YOUR DAD SAY, ARE YOU EVEN THINKING ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS? HOW DO YOU KNOW HE IS NOT JUST USING YOU TO GET OFF? DID YOU EVEN THINK ANY OF THIS THROUGH? WHAT WOULD AN OLDER GUY EVEN WANT WITH A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD” Almost all of the cafeteria who wasn’t already eavesdropping was staring now. Frankly whatever anger he had been feeling for Scott at the beginning of lunch was nothing compared to the pure fury that was coursing through him right now. The difference between him and Scott was that when Scott was angry he got loud, but when Stiles was angry his voice lost all emotion and just became cold and hard.

“First of all, Mcall,” Scott flinched at hearing his last name, “My dad knows about my relationship and has given his approval, and not that you care but so has my mom. Secondly, you know nothing about him or anything about how this came about because you have been a shitty friend who hasn’t bothered to spend any time outside school to talk to me. If you had you would have already known all of this. You just made a snap judgment without all of the facts which is a crappy thing to do, to your so-called best friend. Thirdly I’m seventeen, my birthday which you forgot, was two weeks and a half weeks ago, you know the day you ditched me at the arcade. Which ironically was the same day I met my boyfriend. Finally, how stupid do you think I am? I’d like to think that I’m a pretty damn decent judge of character, and even if I wasn’t I trust my family to have told me if I was making a mistake. Clearly, I was wrong about being a good judge of character because I believed that you were a good friend” Scott looked like he couldn’t decide if he was sick or if he had been slapped. Stiles decided that he couldn’t stand this conversation anymore, so he got up dumped his tray in the trash, and walked out of the cafeteria. Once he was outside he remembered what he told Jackson and quietly cursed to himself. Looked like he had some begging to do.

______
Derek looked over to the clock on the wall as he stretched. Only one-thirty? He was ahead of schedule. He would be done with the rest of his work within an hour. He smiled to himself and decided to check his phone before getting back to work. He had a decent amount of missed texts from Stiles. He opened the first message sent and began reading.

Stiles:

Hey, any chance u could pick me up from schl tdy?

No biggie if not.

that was a lie its kinda important.

I may have mentioned u to my class tdy and got in a fight with Scott. Then Jackass had to open his mouth and said he didn’t believe u existed and being me of course hd to say that you wer picking me up frm schl tdy.

Id rly appreciate it

Nt that its ur responsibility to fix my mistakes

Or mby ur busy i wld totally understand

Sry for dumping this on you such short notice

Just let meh knw i guess

After deciphering the meaning of Stiles’ awful text etiquette, Derek couldn’t help but feel excited. If Stiles’ texts were anything to go off of when he picked him up from school Stiles’ class would be there watching as Derek claimed the boy as his in front of his entire class by kissing him, and showing that he was off-limits. Besides this seemed like the perfect opportunity for an impromptu third date. Derek sent a quick text to Stiles to let him know that he would be there

Notes:

After being confronted Stiles tells everyone about his boyfriend. Scott doesn’t handle it well and yells at Stiles.

Chapter 13: IDK TITALS ARE HARD

Summary:

Pretty tame chapter all though Isaac finally joins the story.

Chapter Text

Stiles tapped out a repetitive rhythm on his desk and glanced at the clock, for the fifteenth time in the past five minutes, as the hour hand neared the three. He had gotten a reply from Derek at the beginning of seventh period but when he went to check his phone Harris called him out and took his phone. So he knows that Derek saw his dilemma, but what he doesn’t know is whether he said he would be there when he got out or not. Frankly the tension was killing him. So he decided to rethink everything that had happened since Lunch, because that definitely wasn’t going to make him more anxious.

After lunch the day had been pretty eventful; Since he left lunch early, he had some time before the next period. He decided to go hide in the Library because he was pretty sure Scott didn’t even realize the school had a Library let alone knew how to find it. He was surprised to find that he wasn’t alone in the Library, sitting at a table with nothing more than a ham sandwich and water was Isaac Lahey. Stiles had tried to be friends with him at one point Sophomore year but Isaac had shut that down pretty much as soon as it started. He decided that it had been two years, so who knew? Maybe things would be different now. He went and sat down.

“Hey-”

Isaac immediately moved to a different table. Things had in fact not changed, or at least not for Isaac but they certainly had for Stiles and he wasn’t going to give up so easily. He picked himself and moved right along with him to the new table. Isaac looked a little annoyed but didn’t move again so Stiles counted it as a win.

“I always wondered where you went during Lunch, I’ve never seen you at any other table so I assumed that you had to be hiding somewhere. Guess I just lucked out that while looking for my own hiding place I just so happened to find yours. Hey! Since you weren’t in the cafeteria you didn’t see! Scott and I totally just got into a huge fight right in front of the whole school. He was upset that I just told him that I have a hot older boyfriend now and that we’ve been dating for two weeks now.” Isaac glared at him, but Stiles would not be discouraged, “Anyway I couldn’t be around him anymore so I decided to go hide somewhere. So I texted my boyfriend asking him to come pick me up when I get out of class, he hasn’t seen it yet but I’m hoping he will. That's probably enough about me, do you eat lunch here very often?”

“...”

“Oh, come on you can tell me, it’s not like I will tell anyone else.”

“If I tell you, will you leave me alone?”

“Nope, but I’m willing to compromise.”

“How so?”

“If you tell me I’ll shut up until Lunch is over. Deal?”

“Deal. Yes, I eat here everyday.”

“Awesome! I’ll-”

“Stiles! You literally just said you’d shut up.”

“Right, shutting up.”

And surprisingly he did, he played on his phone until the bell rang to signify that lunch was over. However, he had one last thing that he had to say “Lunch is over so I can talk now. Anyway, as I was saying before you cut me off, now that I know that this is where you are, I'll come have lunch with you a couple times a week. I'm thinking Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

“Seriously,” Isaac looked more than a little annoyed now but Stiles pressed onwards.

“Yep,” he said, popping the p, “ You might not like it now but soon you and I are gonna be super close friends.”

He ran out of the Library before Isaac could respond and decided to try to make it through the rest of the day. He avoided Scott, which was surprisingly easy when Lydia began to sit by him in his last classes where Scott used to be. That was another surreal experience. The girl he had been pining over for years was now hanging out with him. Willingly! Not like the time when they got locked in the music classroom for half an hour until the teachers found them. This time she actually wanted to be around him! Jackson didn’t seem to be happy about it, so things didn’t really change between the two of them. Scott had tried to talk to him a couple of times but Stiles gave him some of his own medicine and just ignored him.

He and Scott became the talk of the town apparently because though they weren’t exactly popular, they were known for how close they were. No one had ever seen them fight before, not that they didn’t fight, they just kept it private because they didn’t think that it was anyone else's business. But now the hot gossip going around the school was all about them. People who never seemed to know that they existed before suddenly noticed him and whispered as he walked by. He wasn’t super sure that he enjoyed the attention all that much. If he was being honest, this was the exact reason that he was fine not being popular, having everyone's attention could be great but when it was in a negative light it was majorly overwhelming.

A loud ringing noise abruptly jolted Stiles out of his thoughts. The final bell had rung and he was either about to be vindicated in front of his best friend, his (semi) former crush, and his childhood bully, or he was about to become the biggest laughing stock in all of school. He immediately ran to his locker before going to the front doors and scanning the outside as he opened them.

To his relief leaning against his truck, absentmindedly glancing around was Derek, Stiles felt so relieved he felt tension he didn’t realize was there, began seeping out of his shoulders. As if he could sense his presence Derek immediately looked over, locked eyes with him, and smiled.

— — —

‘Going to see mate?’ his wolf was already vibrating in his mind while he sat outside the school waiting for the final bell to ring.

‘Soon’ he thought back, mostly he was glad that his wolf was content just to allow him to court Stiles for the time being, he knew that his patience would be limited once he realized how long it would be before they properly claimed the boy but for the time being he was happy.

‘Missed mate, can continue courting?’

‘I missed him too, and if he agrees then yes we will continue to court him today.’

A shrill noise pierced the otherwise peaceful air, and Derek watched as more and more people left the building. He couldn’t pinpoint Stiles' heartbeat with so many other people around, and yet the second that he stepped out of the school Derek felt his gaze being pulled in the right direction. The look of joy that crossed his mates’ face when he saw Derek, had him grinning like a fool. It was ridiculous he had only known him for half a month but he was already so enamored with that breathtaking smile. Stiles practically skipped over to him, but with the type of grace that only Stiles could manage. That being none, so he nearly tripped halfway over and Derek couldn’t help but chuckle at how adorable he was.

“Hey, gorgeous.” Derek watched as Stiles rolled his eyes and made a sound halfway between a sigh and a laugh.

“Wow, starting right away with the pet names huh.”

“How else am I going to find the one that you don't hate?”

“I guess you're right but gorgeous isn’t it. Anyway thank you so much for showing up, you have no idea how nervous I was.”

Derek felt his eyebrows scrunch up, “I messaged you that I was coming, didn’t I? I thought I did.”

“You probably did but Harris took my phone, so I wouldn’t have seen the message if you did. Oh, RIGHT! I have to go get my phone from Harris, I'll go get it and then we can go ok.”

“Ok, but first.” Derek gently grabbed Stiles sleeve, giving him ample opportunities to pull away if he wanted to, and pulled him back to give him a kiss. He thought the feeling would fade the longer that he was with Stiles but the pure joy that radiated through him felt the exact same as when they kissed the first time, like everything right in the world was falling into place. Someone giving a loud whistle and cat call caused them to break the kiss.

Stiles was blushing but smiling, “I’ll be right back”

Derek glanced around to see if he could identify anyone Stiles or Cora had talked about. The first person that Derek noticed was a short redhead who seemed to radiate authority. Had she been a wolf Derek was positive she would have been an alpha through sheer force of will. He assumed that this was Lydia Martin, Stiles never mentioned her other than in passing about how she was competing with him for valedictorian. (A fact that had both Derek and his wolf preening with pride at how smart he was.) However, Cora had mentioned how she was the object of Stiles' affections for a long time and she didn’t neglect to mention the way that Lydia had treated Stiles in turn. Derek found that he disliked her for ignoring his mates affection, but also for being the object of his affections in the first place. He realized that it wasn’t fair to place the blame on her but to his wolf, she was just another threat to their mates affections and he was ready to prove himself better than her in every way if it meant Stiles would stay with him.

He continued to look around and saw the girl he assumed was Allison but didn’t pay her much attention. Then he noticed two different boys glaring at him for some reason. He assumed one of them was Scott since Stiles mentioned that they had been in a fight and that only left the other boy to be Jackson the bully. The only issue was that he didn’t know how to determine which boy was which.

“Damn Stilinski, that's your boyfriend!” Derek turned his head to the sound and saw another boy walking out of the school doors with Stiles.

“Yeah, I’m still not sure how it happened but that one is mine, Danny, so don’t go getting any ideas.” Derek’s wolf growled low and happy at the possessive term Stiles used referring to them. The other boy just laughed at Stiles' statement.

“Sure, Sure, he's all yours, but any chance he has any brothers who might find me interesting? Who knows Sti we could be brother in laws.” Danny said, still chuckling slightly. Stiles laughed.

“As fun as that sounds, one of his brothers is too old for you and the other is far too young for you. At least I think I'm remembering that right.” Derek felt surprised that Stiles had remembered what he told him about his siblings at all. “Anyway Danny i’ve got to go, you don’t keep someone as hot as him waiting.”

“I’d be willing to wait all day for you, cupcake” Derek said as Stiles jogged over. Stiles' nose scrunched up at Dereks’ comment and Derek couldn’t help but die a little at how cute he is.

“First of all eww, no food based pet names please, I guess I should have made that more clear when you called me honey. And Secondly how did you hear me from all the way over here?”

“Ok, not food then, and my family has always had a strong sense of hearing and a strong sense of smell. I guess that it just runs in my genes.” Derek felt bad lying but he would tell Stiles the truth soon enough, probably after the family dinner if his alpha agreed to it. Stiles looked a little skeptical but seemed to make the decision to let it go.

“All right let's blow this jail cell.”

“I don’t think that's how the saying is supposed to go.”

“Yeah, well this school feels like a prison so let's go.”

“Ok” Stiles got in the truck and began to tell him about his day. He told him about everything leading up to the lunch incident, and was getting ready to explain what happened when Derek missed the turn to his house.

“Oh, wait, that was our turn.”

“I know, but I was wondering if you might want to go to the ice cream place around the corner. If you don’t just say so and we can take the long route back to your house. This way, regardless of what you choose, you have more time to explain what happened and I get to spend some more time with you.” it would’ve been impossible to miss Stiles blush. Derek was pretty sure he would’ve been able to see it from the moon.

“Yeah ice cream sounds great. I’ll tell you about everything else once we get there.” Derek knew he made the right choice when he saw Stiles smile

Chapter 14: Dinner with the Hales

Summary:

Basically what it says in the title

Notes:

Well, I find that I am still inconsistent with finding the will to write but uh here’s a chapter I guess.

Chapter Text

As Stiles got ready for the dinner at the Hale house tonight, he thought about how at the ice cream parlor Derek had done nothing but just sit and listen to him rant about how his day had gone. He looked as if he was hanging onto every word and not just sitting there quietly to placate him while he played on his phone or did something else like his dad or Scott did. It was surreal to feel like he had someone's full attention. After Stiles had finished he asked thoughtful questions about the situation and really showed that he cared about what had happened. Afterward they had just sat there with mindless chit chat, before driving him home. Now here two days later he was still thinking about it, mostly as a distraction from the fact that he was about to go meet all of Derek's family tonight, because if he thought about that he’d freak out and have a panic attack. So he did what he did best and ignored it until he couldn’t anymore.

He thought about the crazy experience the past two days had been. He'd been avoiding Scott while hanging out with Lydia and Danny. He’d tried to get to know Isaac better but the kid had just ignored him all of lunch on Thursday, but he had gotten a smile out of some lame joke he made about Harris and how he hated both of them. Regardless he was determined to push on until he had gotten to know Isaac better. Scott had messaged him after school today asking to hang out and talk tomorrow, but Stiles was too worried thinking about the dinner tonight to confirm or deny so he just messaged that he’d think about it and let him know in the morning.

Derek would be there to pick him up soon, and he had no idea what they were going to think of him. He was loud, obnoxious, inconsiderate, and often spoke without thinking. It was a miracle that Derek alone seemed to put up with him. Cora already avoided him in school, besides what if his family was awful? Just because Derek turned out to be a great person doesn’t mean that his family was made of good people. No, he really shouldn’t think like that until he met them otherwise he would be judging people he hadn’t even met. They were probably a perfectly fine, normal, sweet family. He had always wanted a big family and Derek was amazing, so surely everything would go fine. Wouldn’t it? It would, he would make sure it was fine.

“Are you ok?”

Stiles jumped and spun around to look at who had spoken. “Derek! How did you even get in here! Also I'm fine, just a little nervous about tonight.”

Derek moved a little bit closer and wrapped his arm around Stiles mid section to pull him closer. “Your mom let me in when I arrived early, and I heard you pacing. Regardless, they are going to love you. You’ll fit right in. I promise.”

“But what if I don’t!”

Derek let out a small sigh, “You will, but I doubt me saying so is going to relieve your nerves at all. So let's say that my family doesn't like you for whatever reason, like they think your hair is too short or something. If that impossible thing were to occur then I would stand up in your defence and we would leave. Nothing else would change.”

“But how can this relationship work if they don’t like me! I already know how important your family is to you Derek, you talk about them all the time.”

“Because I’ll make it work for us. Regardless of what they think. Not that it matters because there going to love you both sisters that you’ve met already adore you-”

“Cora does not adore me and Laura threatened me!”

“Don’t tell her I told you but Cora told me that she was intimidated by how smart you were and was worried that if she hung out with you that she’d feel dumb,” really she was scared he would figure out that they were werewolves but it was close enough to the truth, “And Laura had been gushing about how cute you are since she met you. I promise my sisters are already infatuated with you and my pa- family is going to adore you too.” Stiles looked at him a little strangely at the slip up but started to calm down as he spoke.

“All right, let's do this. I’m going to charm the socks off your family.” Stiles semi-confidently strode out the door. Derek followed behind with a grin ghosting across his lips.

As the boys got to Derek’s truck Stiles' mom appeared in the house’s doorway and called out, “Have fun Mischief, and be yourself and you’ll be fine.”

“Thanks Mom”

Derek waited until they left the driveway before grabbing his hand and said, “Mischief, huh, I suppose it is rather fitting.” a smirk toying at the corners of his mouth.

“I know what you're thinking and, no, that is not the pet name you can use for me. That is what my mom calls me and if you were to call me that it would feel weird like you're somehow my parent instead of my boyfriend.”

“Ew, I guess that makes sense, but what kind of ploy earned you that nickname?”

“Nothing! How could think such a thing” Stiles proclaimed clutching his chest in mock offence “ it's a play off my real name Mieczyslaw because as a kid I couldn’t pronounce that jumble of letters so the closest I got sounded similar to mischief so that's what my mom called me.”

“Mieczyslaw huh, I'll have to remember that.”

Stiles stared at him open mouthed, “How dare you pronounce my name perfectly on your first try! I don’t think I was able to pronounce it right the first time until I was fourteen and that took years of practice while stuttering!” Derek then had the audacity to laugh. Rude.

As they pulled into the Hale’s driveway Derek reached over and grabbed Stiles hand to still it, he hadn’t even realized that it was twitching. Stiles glanced over and gave a shaky smile. Derek spoke to reassure him “Everythings going to be fine, are you ready?”

Stiles just nodded in response. They got out and walked up the pathway leading to the front porch. The second that they opened the door Stiles was able to hear the commotion in the house. He could hear children laughing and giving joyful and enraged screeches, he could hear parents trying to calm children down and some kind of crash before the door opened and a middle school aged girl ran out being chased by a younger boy. Derek turned to him before speaking. “This is my little sister and brother, Sophie, and Blake, they are- and they're gone.” Stiles turned away from Derek in time to see Blake chase Sophie into what he assumed was the back yard. All the while, Blake screaming for Sophie to give something back to him while Sophie responds that it was hers in the first place.

Derek let out a loud sigh before turning to Stiles, “I would like to tell you that they aren't usually like this but those two are always bashing heads about something or other but otherwise they're pretty ok.”

“Yeah, I remember you telling me about them, you said Sophie is a ninth grader this year right?”

“Close, she's in eighth grade this year. Blake is in fifth, but apparently they think he's going to skip sixth grade with how well he's doing.” Stiles couldn’t help but smile at the pride littering Derek's voice. “Anyway we should probably head inside and finish making introductions.”

As soon as they crossed the threshold of the doorway they ran into Laura and Cora. Cora smiled at him but stayed quiet while Laura gave him a grin that could only be described as predatory before saying, “Stiles! Remember me!? We met pretty recently.”

“Yes Laura,I think I remember you vaguely. It's pretty easy to forget the person who showed up on your doorstep right before you were supposed to go on a date with their brother.” Stiles responded dryly. She just laughed it off and plowed forward.

“Awwww, cute you do remember me! Anyway, I’m so glad you're here. Apparently you really like comic books, like Derek does, and I was wondering if you would mind settling a debate tha Derek and I have been having for years. Who would win, Wolverine or Wonder Woman. I won’t tell who's on which side of the argument so you can’t be biased to Derek's side. No one in my family other than us cares enough to weigh in so we really need an outside opinion to decide. K?”

“Uh, good question, personally I think that it depends on where their fighting if there in a large area I think wonder woman would win over wolverine because her lasso allows her to have medium to long range attacks that Wolverine wouldn’t be able to get out off if she was able to land a hit, meanwhile Wolverine doesn’t really have anything mid to long range other throwing whatever he can grab. On the other hand I feel like if they were in a small space like a building that Wolverine would have the upperhand due to the fact that he would probably outmaneuver her and she wouldn’t have the space to utilize her lasso. Overall if I had to place my bets on one or the other I would go for Wonder Woman.”

Laura smiled smugly “Told you so. Also i've officially decided your welcome to the family you have good taste in superheros”

“Yeah well turns out you're both wrong, and I’m just going to have to educate the two of you about the superiority of Wolverine.”

“Dinners ready!” A voice yelled out from the kitchen.

“You two should go greet mom while I round up everyone who’s outside.”

“OK” Derek led them into the kitchen where a woman with shoulder length long hair stood. She was a little shorter than Stiles and Derek, she had very open friendly features, yet that did not denote her strong form and straight posture, once she turned and saw them she confidently walked over and her entire presence radiated authority.

“Hi, you must be Stiles, my name is Talia, I'm Derek’s mother, he's told us so much about you, and I'm so excited to finally meet you.” she gingerly grabbed his hand and gave it a firm handshake.

“Hi, um, Derek’s told me a lot about you too, it’s really nice to meet you too, I, uh, wanted to bring a dessert but was told not to. Uh, Anyway you have a lovely home here, it’s very warm and cozy. And dinner smells wonderful. Thanks for having me over.” Derek once again had to grab his hand to keep it from twitching.

“Dear of course, we practically demanded that you come over after Derek told us about you! The entire family has been looking forward to this! It’s not often that anyone new comes around. Before you came along, James is the only one of my children dating anyone, and he's been with Chelsea since he was in tenth grade. They really are a darling couple, Chelsea couldn’t make it tonight but you’ll be able to meet the rest of our immediate family tonight my husband Richard, my children, James, Laura, Cora, Sophie, Blake, and my brother, Peter’s family. His family is bit smaller than ours he's married to Gemma, and they have three daughters, Kaylee, the oldest, Jane, there middle child, and Amelia, his youngest.”

“Wow, that is a lot of names to remember. If Derek hadn’t already told me so much about all of you I would've been bound to forget them all. Frankly I still might, he hadn’t mentioned Peter or his family.”

“Don’t worry dear, you’ll have plenty of time to learn them all.” Talia reassured

Derek piped in, “I didn’t mention Peter because he tends to keep to himself with his family. Which is rather impressive when you add in the fact that he lives with us. Half the time if it wasn’t for Ameilia I’d forget that they were even here at all. They only join us for meals, movie nights, and the occasional sarcastic comment. Although thinking about it you two would probably get along well together, or you’d just banter back and forth. One or the other.”

Stiles was about to reply when he heard the others coming into the dinning room. As the rest of the family came in they sat down with Talia at the head of the table, with a burly man Stiles assumed was Richard on her left. The rest of the family seemed to gravitate to their seats and Derek pulled out a chair for Stiles next to him. Stiles made introductions with the rest of the family before everyone began grabbing food from the center of the table, there was a bowl filled with what Stiles thought was Caesar salad, two different pasta dishes, one white sauce and one red sauce, a plate of garlic bread, and a tray of cookies were set out to cool over on the counter top. Stiles waited for the commotion to calm down before grabbing a small portion of everything for himself.

Once everyone had filled their plate Tallia asked if anyone had any announcements to make. Blake raised his hand and mentioned how he had gotten a hundred on a math test, and it made Stiles smile to see how Blake puffed up at the praise he got from his family. When no one else mentioned any announcements people began to talk around the table mentioning how their day had gone and asking questions. A couple of people teasing each other here and there, all in lighthearted fun no one really trying to anger anyone else.

Stiles answered all the questions that came his way, but was glad that the entire table never seemed to solely focus on him. Stiles ended talking with Sophie about this boy that she was apparently crushing on and how he was just “The coolest.” Stiles was happy to listen and ask questions about him and listen to Sophie talk because it meant that he didn’t have to keep talking about himself. When he wasn’t talking to Sophie about how cute “Carlos” was he was debating with Laura about superheroes, apparently although he agreed with her about Wonder Woman there were many other debates that they disagreed on. A couple times he ended talking to Peter and James about history, and it turned out they were as big history buffs as he was. The entire time though he felt happy and relaxed more and more as the evening went on.

They ended up going to the living room to watch movies after, and Stiles found himself letting go of the tension in his muscles and laughing along with the rambunctious family. They had just finished watching the second movie of the night, ‘Maleficent’, Sophie's pick, when Talia had come out from the kitchen and said “Stiles can I speak with you and Derek in the study please?”

Stiles felt some of the tension from earlier creep back into him, not enough to make him freak out but a little. When he looked over at Derek for reassurance he was surprised to see that Derek looked shocked. Then Derek spoke, “really? Are we doing this so soon? I thought I had more time.”

“Well he was bound to find out eventually dear, might as well get it over with to give him more time to adjust.”

Welp, there went any hope of not feeling anxious. Now Stiles was worried
