Chapter Text

When You first heard of Monsters, you were actually pretty excited. Disbelieving at first, obviously. Your government was collapsing and your first thought about this was that is was the government trying to get some attention. But, you were wrong.

You must have been dreaming when you saw a giant goat on it’s hind legs a bit far ahead of the swarming crowd. Thinking that this was you dying and going to hell but, of course, you were wrong.

What you couldn’t believe was when you went to sleep in your nice, cozy home in your warm bed, you wake up in a display cage with another human.

What.

The.

Fuck.

Thankfully you knew this human as your next door neighbor, John. He was very kind and you two were friends. Furthermore, if you were ever sick or needed something, he was there for you. But, lets be realistic, you were not thinking about that right now. What you were thinking about is why and how you got here. John answered those questions once you fully woke up and calmed down enough to listen. He also gave you a plate of food. It didn’t look poisoned and John wasn’t exactly dying while eating it, so, you joined him and ate whatever this food was together. It honestly didn’t taste great but you’ve had worse.

After a month of living with John, you were separated and picked up by one of the bunny Monsters you saw daily. You were then, put into another display case with a different human. A stranger. After she saw you finally in the cage, (after fighting the Monsters fist whilst trying to escape) she introduced herself as Milly.

After what you thought was a week had passed spent with Milly, a wizard? looking Monster had adopted you and dressed you in a variety of very long purple dresses matching the very itchy purple collar and leash. However, after what seemed like 3 weeks, you were sent back but to a different shop.

This happened a lot, it was basically a routine to you. Spent about a week to a month in a shop, get adopted by a random Monster then get sent back after a while. This had repeated about 6 times. And yet you always thought ‘This time could be different’ but it never was. Every time you were returned to a different shop, with different humans and different shop keepers.

You had given up. You were so done trying to be energetic, entertaining and enthusiastic about any part of this when you werent. You were tired. You couldn’t be bothered to learn your roommates name. You just ate what they gave you, drank what they put down and tried to cover yourself up to the best of your abilities (while having little to no energy left) durning bath time. It was so exhausting. It was a eat, sleep, repeat cycle. You stopped caring. But hey, atleast you didn’t have any close relatives or children to be taken away from…

You went to sleep, hoping that you wouldn’t wake up tomorrow.

|? POV|

Finally, we were free! And what did you know, humans were so tiny. And very unintelligent. Using homes built by a higher power. Also getting everything needed by said higher power. Humans really couldn’t do anything for themselves.

The humans were very weak and were at our mercy very quickly. Now wasn’t that just adorable. After exploring the city, we found some pet shops. And it seems some humans ran off to live in the houses. Stupid things.

Thankfully, we were able to capture them and take them back to there rightful homes. Queen Toriel said that since they were pets, they were adoptable. King Asgore agreed and after a while, us Monsters were able to adopt them.

After a month of researching the humans, we found out how they… reproduced. Gross. The pet shop owners had to separate the females from the males to stop unnecessary breeding from happening.

Humans were quite violent pets, some were very docile, emotional, and kept to themselves while others were aggressive, loud and very interactive. The more quiet ones were pushed off as just shy or had a bad past before we came along and helped. As without us, those pets would still be wild, wondering around aimlessly!

Humans could be good pets though. Helping with certain disabilities like blindness. By helping them not walk into random stuff anywhere. These human pets can be very useful emotionally and physically. The best pets you could own once trained enough.

There were a few… defective ones but all they needed was a little bit of encouragement and they were once again useful. As the research went on, we found that some were smarter than others. Just like the other pets. Very cute.

Hopefully these pet humans can help Monsters with everything. Once the barrier broke, maybe, just maybe this time on the surface could be different.

|Sans POV|

nearly a full three years on the surface. everyones happy, of course they are. no longer trapped in the underground, being able to watch the sunset, sunrise and most importantly: able to finally see the stars. they were just, wow. has to be one of the very few things i love about life.

paps is happy but, hes all grown up now. my life doesn’t have much of a purpose anymore. what’s the point of life without purpose? working on as many jobs as i can just isn’t enough. it doesn’t keep me occupied enough. sleep does. the best thing to do is sleep. got nothing better to do? sleep.

i still have nightmares. i still have no idea what they are about. i still keep having the feeling of deja-vu.

“SANS! GET UP YOU LAZY BONES, WE NEED TO GET GOING!”

did i forget something? i don’t think so. eh. i sit up, get up off the bed (no longer just a mattress), grab my jacket and head downstairs to papyrus.

“THERE YOU ARE! LETS GET THE CAR, I HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU!” paps poses proudly.

“heh, you didn’t have to get me nothin’. what is it?” i ask.

“IF I TOLD YOU SANS, IT WOULD NO LONGER BE A SURPRISE!”

“you’re so cool bro”

“I KNOW. NYEH HEH HEH!”

we leave the house and sit in paps car. i still remember when i got him it for his first birthday since getting to the surface. his face was worth all the money i saved up for it. heh. my bro really is cool.

about 30 mins later and he parks near the mall. hmm, i wonder what he got for me.

“COME ON BROTHER, THIS WAY.” he stated. heading the opposite direction to the mall and intead of going to the left, he walks to the right, heading for the other building. now im really wondering what he got me. i never checked what this place was so all i have is my imagination i guess.

as paps leads the way towards the building. i figure out its a human pet shop. huh. paps is getting me a pet? how am i gonna look after a pet? i can bearly look after myself.

“Ah, hello and welcome! What can I help you with today?” a cat monster greets us. now i have a better look, i realise its sundri. he used to live in snowdin more closer the the woods. nice to see he’s doing alright.

“HELLO SUNDRI! SANS AND I ARE HERE TO ADOPT A HUMAN. NOT ONE TOO ENERGETIC TO MATCH MY BROTHER BUT ONE NOT TOO LAZY SO HE WILL HAVE TO ATLEAST DO SOMETHING. PLEASE.” papyrus describes. he wants a pet to match me. my bro’s the coolest guy.

“Of course, come with me. I have a few suggestions.” he replied, waving his paw in a ‘come’ motion.

we follow him to the first human, a male, sundri said he was always tired but with the right amount of rest, was quite playful. also said he was pretty young, probably in his teen years. he uh, didn’t stick out with me i guess. sundri takes us to a few other humans who were similar to the first but older. still, non of them seemed to be a good pet for me.

that was until i came across a human female. about her twenties and wasn’t very energetic. sundri commented that this one was sent back a few times and was a little bit of a trouble maker but very calm if left alone, great for when you’re not in the house a lot.

when i asked to hold her, sundri said yes. he grabed her under her arms and passed her to me. once i had a stable hold on her, i held her like a baby bones and she sighed. then she proceeded to cuddle up into my chest. stars, she’s adorable.

“hey, uhh, how much is this one?” i asked, still looking at her face. it seems like she fell asleep. too cute.

“Oh, you would like her? With her age and gender, she should be about 1,200G.” sundri replied.

“WHY WOULD ITS AGE AND GENDER MATTER?” paps questioned.

“Well, the males are cheaper since they are less picky about everything and with the females, if you wanted to breed her, she would be pregnant. Males cannot get pregnant. Also, with age, the younger they are, again the cheaper they are. If you chose a baby human, they would be a lot more work that the grown ones.” he explained. huh. so she’s more expensive, she’s worth it. she’s way too cute.

“RIGHT, SANS DO YOU WANT IT?”

“heh, yeah.” i still haven’t stopped looking at her. we followed sundri further toward the front of the shop where the clothes, collars, furniture ect were.

“You can pick up the leaflet at the register once you are done with the shopping. Oh, with her age, she will need essential supplies. Human females, once they get to a certain age, bleed for a week straight. Very strange, I know, but the supplies you will need will be on isle seven.” sundri added. she bleeds!? wouldn’t that hurt? before i could ask, he had left us to it.

“WELL THEN, LET US GET TO IT.” paps suddenly filled the silence. unfortunately, it woke the human up. well, she should probably be awake for this anyway, wouldn’t want her to not like what we get her.

“heya, come on, let’s get you some stuff yeah?” i whispered to her. i know she can’t understand me but it’s nice to talk to her. she blinked up at me, adorable, then huffed, adorable, looked around the shop and tried to sit up. too cute. i changed her position so she was rested on my shoulders as i held onto her legs so she wouldn’t fall off.

as we looked at some clothes, the texture of them weren’t great. felt cheap. but incase she liked some of these, i lifted her off my shoulders and stood her on one of the many shelves filled with clothes.

she started walking along while looking at the clothes and feeling the fabric. near the end of the shelf, she spots a yellow dress, it had a ribbon belt, puffy skirt, long sleeves and white accents. she held onto the dress with two hands and looked at me. i knew she would look absolutely adorable in it and grabbed it.

after getting the clothes, the human picked out a few dresses, shirts and trousers. we headed to the isle with the essentials. if she bleeds, she needs to have the best ones.

we spent a while looking at a few and what was adorable was that there was a pink hue on the humans face. too cute. next, shoes, paps wanted ones that fit the aesthetic but i just wanted ones that were comfortable. he made good points and agreed she should be comfortable.

now for the collar. a blue one would be amazing. imagine her wearing my colour. her matching me and everyone knowing that she’s mine.

deja-vu hit hard then.

i look back down in my arms and she was fast alseep. too cute.

as i went to pay for everything, papyrus had already given sundri the g. “REMEMBER BROTHER, THIS IS A PRESENT FOR YOU. MY TREAT.” paps explained

“right bro, you’re so cool.” i responded.

“YES YES, I KNOW.”

we left the shop and said our goodbyes to sundri. once near the car i smirked.

“heh, hey pap.” i started.

“YES BROTHER?” he replied. my smile widened.

“i think this was the purrfect supurrise.” i joked. the silence was loud.

“JUST WHEN I THOUGHT TODAY WOULD BE GREAT, BUT NOT AS GREAT AS ME, YOU HAD TO RUIN IT!” he raged. heh.

“did i hit your funny bone?” i quipped. paps just groaned and sat in the car. i snickered.

the human was still in my arms from when i last picked her up. she fell asleep again. so cute. i can’t wait to welcome her home.

|your POV|

You were woken up by the sound of the other human screaming. What they were screaming about, you didn’t know and didn’t care.

“Ugh! Get off me you disgusting creature! I don’t want a fucking bath! Get off me!” She screeched. Damn, now you couldn’t go back to sleep.

You sat up in your bed, your eyes were still closed and you sighed. All you wanted was to sleep. Was that really so hard? Apparently so with all of these loud humans you continuously get roomed with. It was really pissing you off.

Finally, she was out of the cage and you couldn’t hear her yelling. There was a plate of slop ready for you to eat so while you waited until her bath was done, you filled yourself with it.

Just after you had finished, the other person was brought back and now it was your turn to be bathed. Great, you have to show your naked body to this cat again. Pretty ironic that most of the monsters who ran the pet shop were pet like. Oh how the tables have turned.

What seemed to be a few minutes, you were redressed and placed back into the cage. Bordem over taking you as you just sat on the ground, starring into nothingness.

What snapped you out of your daze was some skeleton monsters peering into the case. You looked back down to continue staring into space when the cat picked you up. Oh, they were looking to adopt you. All they were gonna do is keep you until they got bored and sent you back.

Maybe if taken back too many times, you would have to be put down. Hope its peaceful, atleast then I wouldn’t ever have to wake up to this shit again. But maybe this time could be different?

No. What were you thinking. Suddenly all you felt was warmth. Whatever you were on was so soft. You closed your eyes and leaned into the material.

A loud sound woke you up from your nap. Still disoriented, you forgot where you were. You heard some noises coming from above you and you looked up. It was the skeleton monster. You blinked. Right, you were getting adopted, again.

As you looked around the shop, you realised that you were in the front of the shop where all of the ‘accessories’ were stored. You really hoped that the clothes atleast felt ok. You really didn’t want to get some sort of rash again from irritating fabrics.

Your daydreaming stopped when you were abruptly put onto one of the clothing shelves. Did they want you to pick them out? Huh, that was new. This time could be different…

You walked along the shelf while feeling the fabric. All of it felt shit really. You looked ahead and saw a dress. It looked beautiful. It was yellow, a light yellow, long sleeves that would have covered your hands if worn, the skirt would end about mid thigh and puffed out nicely, it adorned a white ribbon at the waist, a low neckline and a white stripe at the very ends of the sleeves, skirt and neckline. It felt fine aswell. You looked to your left and up at that same smiling skeleton. He looked at the dress and picked it up, picking you back up and putting you on his shoulders. Um, ok then.

Oh god.

Oh no.

We were now in the period section. This is a private thing to you. Not something you particularly shared to people since it never concerned them. And now these skeletons were now very focused on getting some pads.

After what seemed forever and you were pretty sure your face had turned a shade of pink with the small amount of heat you felt on your cheeks. After close inspection from the tall skeletons, they picked a couple and moved on to the underwear section.

Thankfully they just grabbed the first few they saw and left. Shoes were next, they made sure they fit you and chose them if they fit the outfits. The Monsters argued (you think? The taller skeleton is very animated you observed), about what? You don’t know.

The smaller skeleton picked you back up, cradled you in their arms and you quickly fell to sleep.

You opened your eyes as you were being jostled, in the Monster’s hand you saw a brandeis blue collar with a few white gems along it. Not too many, but just enough to sparkle. Honestly, its really pretty with the matching leash.

Well, it was gorgeous until your brain caught up with what was going on. That was your collar. Your eye lids closed and you fell back to sleep.

“SO SANS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO NAME IT?” papyrus asked, honestly i have no idea.

“i dunno paps, i was thinking something like ‘softy’ or ‘pet’.” i reply. he scoffs like its the worst thing hes ever heard, heh.

“THOSE ARE VERY SIMPLE. IT IS APART OF THE FAMILY NOW SO… HMM. WHAT ABOUT ARISTA? OR ROSETTA?”

“nah, it doesn’t fit her.”

“HMM, MAYBE DAKOTA?”

“starline.” i mumbled.

“WHAT WAS THAT BROTHER?”

“her name bro, her name is starline.” shes my star…

“A PERFECT NAME FOR IT. CONGRATULATIONS STARLINE! YOU WILL NOW BE LIVING WITH THE GREAT PAPYRUS AND SANS!” he proudly announced.

i look back done and she looks so peaceful, so perfect, so pretty, so cute. heh, its not even been a day and im already obsessed with her. what is she doing to me?

paps pulls up onto our drive and comes to a stop. i make sure that ive gotten a good grip on her so she doesn’t fall and get out of the car.

“welcome home starline.”

i nudge her tiny cheek to stir her awake. she flutters her eyelids open and looks very dazed. heh, cute. she pushes her hands off my arms to sit up straight, rubbing her eyes right after.

she looked around and her facial expressions were very expressive. huh, who would have thought? her eyes were first blown wide when she looked at the park, i guess she would like to go there. maybe one day. then confusion filled her features after a while. she continued to look around and her confusion only became clearer.

might aswell see what she thinks of the house. i walk up the steps and through the door.

her face was priceless! she looked at the carpet and frowned, then the walls and shruged. i dunno if she likes it or not. then the kitchen. her expression was pretty neutral, untill she saw the sink. she opened her little mouth and blinked several times. heh, that was adorable.

after a few more seconds, she looked back at me, closed her mouth and shifted her eyes away to, what i can assume, the coach. she shook her head and went to lie back down in my arms.

i strolled over to the kitchen and opened the doors on the right side to the garden. wanna see her reaction to the plants. when we moved here, the garden was pretty big already and had some beautiful flowers growing. thankfully, paps found a guide on how to maintain them in the boxs of stuff we got for free when the house was built.

her mini eyes scanned the area and it looked like she had come to some sort of, realization? her eyes started to water.

“ah shit. hey, hey, its alright. im here, its ok. whats wrong starline?” i sooth her while wiping the tears slowly and silently streaming down her face. her litte sniffles were so cute. it took a couple of minutes before she stopped crying. i might aswell take her to bed. my bed. our bed, thats in our room.

as i started to walk back inside, she patted my arm, making me look at her. she then pointed at the flowers. and how could i say no to her?

i turned back around and headed for the flowers. i guided her down and placed her infront of the flower beds? i thinks thats what they’re called.

she wandered around and check them all. why was she doing that? did she like flowers? when she saw the bush of white, swirly flowers she ran. i followed her slowly, she touched the petals with such care and a little smile bloomed on her face. i swear i saw nothing else but that smile. heh, remembering the first time she smiled at me in that one coffee shop… that never happened…

deja-vu.

i forgot what i was thinking about. when i looked back at starline, she was just, staring at me with her head tilted slightly to the side. she was looking right into my eyelights.

she looked away and flushed, noticing that i had noticed her. i picked her and carried her back inside. she had already seen this floor so the one above is next.

i tred up the stairs and briefly open the first door, paps room. then the next door, the bathroom and finally our room. paps was in here with her bags.

“HELLO BROTHER, TINY HUMAN! I HAVE BROUGHT THE BAGS UP TO YOUR ROOM SO IT SHALL BE MUCH QUICKER TO SET UP! AFTER THAT, WE WILL NEED TO GET THE PET SOME FOOD. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, HUMAN PETS CANNOT LIVE OFF MAGIC BASED FOOD.” papyrus announced. she cant eat magic food? i bet shes hungry now. better get a move on.

“thanks bro, you’re the coolest.”

“I KNOW, MEET ME DOWNSTAIRS WHEN READY!” hes already gone.

i carefully put starline down onto the bed and look through the bags. hmm, the doll-like house might take a while to set up. might aswell crack on.

that took longer than i thought. magic couldn’t keep it together so all of the screws and bolts had to be put together manually. what a pain.

i turned my skull to the right to catch a glimpse at starline and she was… smiling at me. when she caught me staring, she hide her lips behind her hand. too cute.

“heh, come on, shoppin’ time.” i carefully pick her up and take her downstairs.

“WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?”

“the house didn’t use magic to be put up.”

“THATS… UNUSUAL. WELL, THERE IS NO TIME TO WASTE! WE NEED TO GET THE HUMAN ITS FOOD.”

we both move out of the house and get into the car. i make sure starline is comfortable and completely safe before paps started up the engine.

when we drive off i ask ask papyrus, “uhh bro? what do we get her?”

“I… DO NOT KNOW. BUT DO NOT FEAR DEAR BROTHER, WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT WE SHOULD GET AT THE SHOP. ALL I NEED IS TO LOOK AT THE FOODS AND I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, CAN COOK IT SOMETHING FOR IT TO FEED ON. NYEH HEH HEH HEH!”

“you’re so cool bro.”

“OF COURSE I AM.”

i grab a basket and put the leash on starline. she doesn’t look like she likes it but i dont want someone else grabbing what is mine.

“where should we get first?”

“HMMM, MAYBE THE PASTA? OR FRUITS, IT WILL NEED TO BE HEALTHY!”

“yeah, i guess she would need to be…” i look down at her, she keeps looking at the leash then at the floor. i wonder what shes thinking, does she think like us. does she have a soul? if she does, will she let me… nope, not gonna think about that.

“BROTHER? ARE YOU ALRIGHT? YOU LOOK A BIT BLUE.” paps looks at me with concern, i shake it off and give him a dismissive wave.

“im fine paps, nothing to worry about.”

i feel a tug on the leash and look down to the side, she walked foward looking at the fruit isle. welp, i guess she made the decision for us. i follow her lead and papyrus catches on, he reaches the isle first and starts to put fruits he would like to try in his basket.

some of them had free samples and if they did, i gave one to starline, see if she liked it. i made a list in my skull for which one she likes and dislikes.

as i went to reach for an orange, i hear someone say in surprise.

“Sansyyyyy is that you? Oh its been so long handsome!” oh, its direan. didnt think i would be seeing her today, or ever outside grilbz. this is gonna be so awkward.

“heya, uh, weird see you here, huh?”

“Sansy dont be like that hehe, we should meet up sometime, like before.” oh no, oh stars no. i am not getting back with her.

“eh, im busy. ive got a human to look after now ya know.” i look at starline, just caught her yawning. too precious.

“Ugh ok, I’ll see you at Grillby’s!” and she continues walking off. thank the stars above she left.

we kept bumping into other monsters, most who had humans of their own. starline payed no mind to them except maybe a little conversation. such a good, adorable girl. we were left alone and i still got her opinion on different foods.

when we got halfway through the salty isle, i saw grillby with his human. forgot he had one. now im looking at his human, starline and him are pretty, similar looking? huh? never thought that could happen with humans.

“hey grilbz,” i greet, “how are ya?”

“…Hi. …Im Fine.” he replys.

“forgot you had a human, how is he? does he wanna say hello to starline?”

“…Starline? …You have a human?”

“yep, say hello to chard.” i shift a little so shes in view and as she looks up she freezes up. her eyes are blown wide and her mouth is slightly open. i look at grilbz human and he has the same expression. what the fuck?

then she starts crying, and i mean there is a waterfall coming out of her eyes, and chards. they run to eachother and hold the other in a tight hug.

jealousy. thats what i feel at the moment. im jealous that shes not giving her own soulma…

…her owner that much attention.

a few minutes pass and they finally let go and have a very tearful conversation. what they are talking about? i dont know. but they seem happy and relieved to see eachother.

“heh, guess we are shopping together now.” grillby nods.

“OH NO! WHY ARE THE HUMANS CRYING?” looks like paps is back from the bakery.

“they’re happy papyrus, come on. we gotta pay.”

me and paps say goodbye to grillby and drive off. i start thinking that maybe going on some sorta play date would be good for her. get her interacting with other humans.

now it was just thinking of who. the dog couple have a human, so does doggo. i heard lalita got a human for mk. maybe them? oh what about frisk? that kid gets along with everyone. might need to call tori first.

i grab my phone from my jacket pocket and dial her number. it rings a couple times but she answers.

“Hello Sans! Its nice to hear from you! How are you?”

“im good tori, just wanted to ask ya somethin’.”

“Oh? What is the matter?”

“ive got a human-“

“Oh, that’s wonderful news! You must come over to show me. Maybe Frisk would like to meet them!”

“that was why i called, glad i know she can meet you and frisk. when should we come over?”

“Hmm, well, I have a full schedule at the moment. I will text you when I have some time.”

“k, thanks tori, see ya.”

“Goodbye Sans.” the call cuts off and i turn it off. i look back down at starline, sleeping. heh, adorable.
