Work Text:

Yuri regarded the shattered windows of the F.E.A.S.T. hall. The damage was not the worst she had ever seen, but the shockwave had broken all the windows and torn a part out of the ceiling. Her agents were questioning the people who had been close enough to notice anything.

The thing that puzzled her most was a cluster of webs around the bomb. Usually, when Spider-Man helped out he left her a text, or at least a note, saluting them before swinging off elsewhere. Now there was nothing, just silence. It made her wonder if he was chasing someone, if there was more to this story after all.

Suddenly, she heard him talking from the other side of the room. She spun around and scanned the room, but there was no sign of the iconic blue and red suit. She was sure she’d heard his voice though.

“... need help, just stay here and I’ll go find someone.”

She pinpointed the origin of the voice, but there was no masked superhero there. A little away from the other victims, a young man was reassuring a middle-aged lady sitting on a chair. The man was standing with his back to her, so Yuri studied his height, build and posture. Had she run into Spider-Man, without his suit?

Tentatively, Yuri walked over to them. The woman noticed her approaching and looked up, causing the man to turn around. He looked a little surprised to see her approach but recovered his expression quickly.

“Excuse me for interrupting, but are you in need of medical assistance, madam?”

“She is, captain,” the man answered quickly. Too quickly, she had not introduced herself as the captain of the police yet. This only confirmed her suspicion. She had to fight to keep a smile off her face.

“I don’t need any help,” the woman on the chair said. “I need to catch my breath for a bit, but I’m fine. Don’t listen to my nephew.”

Yuri smiled at her. “We have doctors in the medbay. They can do a quick check, just in case. If you’re fine, you’ll be back in no time.”

Sighing, the woman nodded. Yuri waved over a couple of her agents and they led the woman to the medbay. Yuri and the woman’s nephew watched her leave.

When she was gone from sight, Yuri turned to the man. “Was she close to the explosion?”

“She was in the kitchen,” he replied, indicating a door on the far side of the hall. “But she doesn’t have a very strong heart, so I’m worried about her.”

She nodded thoughtfully. “How close were you to the attack?” she asked after a moment of silence.

“I... I was out in the hallway. I came rushing in when I heard an explosion.”

Yuri looked around quickly to see if anyone was within hearing distance. The coast was clear. She looked back to the man and saw that he was subtly scanning the room too.

She leaned a little closer. “Did you see anything?” she asked in a low voice.

“A bomb exploding,” he answered innocently. She gave him an exasperated look and he grinned.

“I mean if you entered the room right after the bomb exploded, you must have seen Spider-Man around.” If he wasn’t telling her anything, she would draw him out.

“Spider-Man?” he asked her, feigning surprise. “He was here?”

She nodded. “He webbed the bomb, preventing this explosion from becoming a disaster. The debris would have caused a lot more injuries than the shockwave, if he hadn’t. I want to thank him.” She looked at him meaningfully.

“You could leave him a note, I hear that’s how he communicates.”

Yuri smiled. “He didn’t leave me one this time. I guess he was busy looking after his aunt.”

He didn’t reply. She gave him a long look, which he returned. Eventually, a little smile broke through on his face.

She nodded towards the bomb. “Who do you think is behind it?”

“I don’t know,” he said, following her gaze. “I don’t see much motive. Why would anyone attack F.E.A.S.T.?”

“Targeting you perhaps? I’ll look into it.”

“Thanks, Yuri.”

“No, thank you.”

The man looked at her for a second. Then he held out his hand. “Peter Parker,” he introduced himself.

Yuri shook his hand. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Parker.”

Peter grinned. “You can call me Spider-Cop.”
