Work Text:

Everything was a blur, beginning with the end of James and Lily Potter's lives. Sirius faintly remembered exploding at his former friend. Anger, agony, pain, and loss laced every spell and every insult Sirius threw.

~flashback~

The day started normal. James and Lily enjoyed life in their little house in Godric's Hollow. Their son, Harry, was occupied with Lily's muggle television and a teething ring.

"James? Have you heard any word from Sirius, Remus, or even Peter?" Lily asked. James, who stared adoringly at his son, briefly looked at his wife.

"All I know is that Peter switched with Sirius to be guardian, Sirius is stressing over Black family drama, and I think Remus said he was getting a teaching degree. Why?" James answered. Lily tucked a strand of her red hair behind her ear and bit her lip, her green eyes swirling with worry.

"It's just. It's been about a year and aren't they your family? You four were inseparable." She said.

"Lily, it wasn't as if they were attached to my hips." James said. At the sound of their front gate slamming, James tensed and became highly alert. Lily grabbed Harry, cradling him in her arms as the door flew open, revealing Lord Voldemort. He was cloaked in black robes. His brown eyes were almost black. His brown curls hung in his face and dusted the tips of his ears. "Lily run! I'll hold him off!"

Lily ran up the stairs and into Harry's bedroom. James faced Voldemort, his other facial features shadowed by his hood.

"James Potter. It's a pleasure." Voldemort sneered.

"How did you find us?" James growled. Voldemort's pale lips twitched into a sly smile.

"Your dear friend sold you out to save his own hide."

"What? Peter would do no such thing!" James shouted. Voldemort laughed.

"And yet, he did!" Before James could respond, a stream of green light hit him in the chest. He fell to the floor, his glasses cracked and shattered. His hazel orbs no longer seeing.

Up in Harry's bedroom, Lily squeezed her eyes shut. Harry sat in his crib, staring at his mother, oblivious that his father was now dead. Lily froze as Voldemort busted into the room. Books flew everywhere and toys scattered the floor. Tom raised his wand, pointing at Harry. In a split second, the terrified scream that escaped Lily's lips faded as she jumped in front of her son. Harry began to cry. Voldemort refocused and casted the spell for a third time. Everything froze. The spell bounced off of the forehead of the young boy and back towards it's caster. Black vapor floated before disappearing.

~end flashback~

Yeah. A normal day.

Sirius slumped against the wall of his cell. Tears dripped down his cheeks. His wrists still ached from the cuffs and his throat was still sore from screaming. The last thing he ever saw was Peter's smug smile as he morphed into a rat, and the look of horror on Remus' face as he misunderstood the situation. And Sirius couldn't do a thing about it.
