Work Text:

“Kel? Are you ready?” Kel heard his boyfriend, Sunny, ask, knocking on the bathroom door from the other side. Kel was still looking in the mirror, desperately trying to remember how to tie a tie. When was the last time he’d done this? Right. Back when his family went to get a fancy picture of all of them, which was years ago. Had Kel even been the one to tie that tie, or had Hero done it for him? He had to get this right. They barely ever went out to eat at fancy places. He wanted to look at least half-decent.

“Just a minute!” Kel called in reply. “I can’t get this stupid thing right.”

“What stupid thing?”

“I don’t think I know how to tie a tie!” Kel exclaimed. He was still struggling, trying to figure out which part of it went where. He’d get there eventually, though! Probably. Hopefully.

He heard Sunny sigh fondly. “Just come out here and let me do it,” he said.

Well, Kel couldn’t deny his help. If he ever did figure the dumb tie out, it would probably take a lot longer than he would like it to. “Alright, just a sec’,” Kel said, walking out of the bathroom rather quickly. Sunny was there waiting for him as expected.

“C’mere,” he said, urging Kel a little closer. “And lean down a little. You’re too tall,” he said. With a small chuckle, Kel complied. Sunny was able to tie his tie for him in seconds, which to him, was an impressive miracle. However, Sunny only actually let him go after giving him a small kiss. “Ready to go?”

Kel’s face was flushed a little from the surprise, and he giggled. “Yeah, I think so! Our table’s reserved at that place, right?”

“Mhm,” Sunny hummed. “I made sure to take care of it last night. We should get going, so we’re not late,” he said, already beginning to walk towards the front door.

“I know, I know!” Kel laughed, hurrying after him, easily getting to his side. Kel disliked being late as much as the next person, but there was no one who hated the prospect of it quite as much as Sunny did. Kel was perfectly fine with that, as it always seemed to keep the both of them on track. Kel looked over to admire his boyfriend for a split second before they got to Kel’s driveway, dressed up in his suit and bow tie. He looked even fancier than Kel did. Aw. “I love you, Sunshine,” Kel smiled.

Both of them were now outside, and Sunny opened the passenger side door to step inside of Kel’s copper-colored pickup truck. ‘I love you, too, dork.” That was quite the difference in nicknames. It almost made him laugh as he got into the driver’s seat, putting the key into the ignition and turning it to start the engine, and putting on his seatbelt.

“All buckled up?” Kel asked with a grin, looking over at Sunny.

“You know it,” Sunny replied, tugging on his seatbelt a little to make it more obvious.

“Let’s get going then!” Kel cheered, unnecessarily throwing his hands into the air for a moment. After taking the truck out of park, they began on their way. The place they planned to go too wasn’t all that far away, so they’d be there soon!

✷✷✷

Right on time, Kel pulled into the driveway of the restaurant, “We’re here!” Kel exclaimed happily, as if it weren’t obvious. Though, of course, Sunny already knew that, he didn’t seem to have any need to comment on that aloud. He was surely used to his boyfriend’s antics by now.

As Sunny undid his seatbelt, Kel rushed as fast as he could out of the truck. He caught a glance of Sunny raising an eyebrow at him. Even when he was energetic, he wasn’t in that much of a rush. Little did he know, however, there was a reason that Kel was hurrying as fast as he could. He ran to the other side so he could open Sunny’s door for him.

Sunny stepped out, chuckling. “Thanks.”

“Of course!” Kel beamed, offering his hand for Sunny to take. The two walked hand in hand to the restaurant, and although they’d be together for a couple years now, it still made Kel unbelievably happy. The building had quite some large windows, and Kel could easily see that the place was packed. Sunday night really was busy. It was a good thing that Sunny had made a reservation, or there would be no getting in that place.

When they got inside, there was only one other group of people trying to get a place to be seated, so thankfully they wouldn’t have to wait for long. However, it seemed that they had to be turned away, as they hadn’t made any reservations. Poor them. Sunny and Kel stepped up to talk to the hostess.

“I’m sorry dears, but the place is fully packed,” the old lady said. Kel saw Sunny squint with confusion.

“But we made a reservation for tonight,” Sunny said. “That can’t be right.”

“Everyone else here made a reservation, too,” she said. “What name is the reservation under? Maybe you booked a different day by accident; I can check for you.”

“Maybe,” Sunny said, but he definitely didn’t seem convinced of that. “It should be under Sunny Suzuki,” he told her. Kel waited patiently. It was definitely possible that Sunny had booked the wrong night, but that didn’t seem totally right. He’d been just as excited about their date tonight as he was.

The lady looked through the book, and after about thirty seconds of looking through things, she seemed to have an almost mortified expression. Kel frowned.

“You were booked for tonight…” The lady explained, “However, someone else was booked for the same table at the same time as you. I’m so sorry, I don’t know how that could have gotten through our system. If you’d like, I could put you down for the same time and day next week..! No extra charge, of course.”

Sunny sighed, looking over at Kel. “Do you want to do that?”

“I mean…if there’s no other way we can eat here tonight, I guess so.” Kel tried to remind himself that mistakes happen so he couldn’t get annoyed with the restaurant.

“My deepest apologies again, sirs. I’ll write that down for you right away.”

“It’s alright,” Sunny said, flatly. He looked back over at Kel again as the two began to walk out, as at that point there was nothing else to do there. “So…what now? Should we just go home? This is pretty much the only fancy restaurant in town. No wonder it’s packed.”

“I dunno…” Kel said, trying to think. “I feel like we should still go somewhere now, right? We’re already all dressed up!”

“Yeah,” Sunny agreed. “...But where would we even go?”

“Hm…” Kel looked around, to see if there was anything interesting in sight. Though the town they lived in now was nowhere near as small as Faraway, it definitely wasn’t too large, either. However, there was another restaurant across the street. The burger place! …It definitely wasn’t fitting for their fancy outfits, seeing as it was a fast food place…but Kel was hungry and that did sound good. “What about there?” Kel pointed.

“The burger place..?” Sunny raised an eyebrow. “That’s just about the least fancy thing I can think of,” he said, looking down at his outfit, and then Kel’s.

“I know..!’ Kel replied, “But it still sounds good, doesn’t it? And I doubt anyone’ll even care about the outfits, anyway. Maybe they’ll think we just really love the food, which is true.”

Sunny breathed deeply, thinking for a moment. “...Alright. Let’s go.”

“Awesome!” Kel grinned. “There’s no way some dumb restaurant not planning properly is gonna ruin this night!”

✷✷✷

The two walked into the burger place, and Kel had the widest smile imaginable on his face. It wasn’t quite the fancy night they had planned for, but Kel was more than happy as long as they were still going out together. It didn’t take long for them to get their food and be seated, which was one of the pros of a place like this, even if the food wasn’t the highest quality imaginable. Kel still liked it, anyway.

“Even this place is pretty busy,” Sunny commented before taking a bite of his burger, looking around.

“Yeah…but at least there was still a place for us to sit!”

“Mhm,” Sunny responded. “I can tell that the guy that took our order was looking at us funny. I bet we’re the only ones who've ever come here dressed like this.”

“It must have happened here at least a few times before. This place has been around for a while.” Kel took another bite of food. Wow. This was why he knew food didn’t have to be fancy to be tasty.

Sunny shrugged. “Yeah, you’re right. Might be the first time that guy has seen it, though,”

Kel laughed. “Maybe! I mean I wouldn't be surprised,” he paused for a second, thinking. “Y’know, I know it’s silly, but it’s honestly kinda fun being dressed so fancily when we’re just eating here of all places. I bet we’re the coolest guys here, heh…especially you.”

Sunny rolled his eyes lovingly with a smile on his face. “I bet you’re right.”
