Mission Derailed

Summary:

Shikamaru was sent rocketing away from the mother ship in a severe explosion. After days of desperately signaling for help, he was picked up by something far more alien than he'd ever seen before. He's been sent way off the map into the clutches of a strange life form who starts treating him like an exotic pet. Shikamaru wonders if he'll ever see his comrades again.. and if there's something about himself he didn't know of before.

Chapter 1: Days 1-100 [Shikamaru's Log]

Chapter Text

New log [S. Nara]—Entry 1 [Day 1]
Fuck, does this not have the stardate programmed in? I guess it was only meant for short trips. [tapping sound] Whatever. Emergency day one I suppose. I’m not really sure what happened, but something exploded. I didn’t make it to a pod, I managed to hop in a probe vessel right before it got rocketed out by the explosion. I’m thankful it’s hardy, so the interior is safe, but the engine is kind of kaput. The unfortunate part is that there’s no cryosleep option in here, so if I don’t get picked up, I’ll either starve or suffocate. What a drag.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 2 [Day 2]
The location system is fucked so I don’t know where I am, but based on the objects in the distance floating by, I’m pretty sure I’m moving way too fast for the mother ship to catch up soon enough, especially considering the damage. I’m opening my distress call to all frequencies. Hopefully someone out there picks up.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 3 [Day 3]
There’s water in here, and some snacks, but not much. At least the thirst won’t be what gets me. I’m pretty sure it’ll be suffocation. At least a CO2 death is peaceful, so I’ve heard.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 4 [Day 4]
No change. Shit sucks. Whatever.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 7 [Day 7]
The hunger was annoying at first but I got used to it. Today though I had some pretty bad hunger pains. I debated just throwing myself out into space but I think Choji would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t stick it out to the end. What a pain.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 9 [Day 9]
Oxygen is low. Can’t wait to just go to sleep forever. I’ve been tired from starving anyways.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 10 [Day 9]
Nevermind. Not dead yet. Also, I definitely got sent flying during that explosion. I suspect I’m all the way off the map. [sigh resounds, shifting noises] I got picked up today by something… weird. There were theories about inorganic life, but never documented. I’m pretty sure this is the first human-encountered case. First off, it was massive. It was made of what looked like stone, perhaps controlled by magnetic waves. It didn’t need air and was unaffected by being in the vacuum of space. If you squint at it, it vaguely looks like Bruce Lee, so I’ve already nicknamed it “Rock Lee”. My ship was brought into some kind of station built into an asteroid. The proportions are massive, I’m basically a mouse in comparison. Rock Lee seems to ‘vocalize’ with these deep grinding rumbles. I’m not sure if it’s a method of communication or not. It’s too foreign for me to get a sense of it. Rock Lee was somehow able to open up my ship from the outside without damaging it, I think it used magnetic manipulation to activate the doors. I think I was scanned after that, after it put me inside some tube. The machines printed a slip of paper and displayed a bunch of symbols from a holographic display. I was set back into my ship and the whole ship was placed in what I believe to be a quarantine zone. If I die, at least my logs will have something worthwhile in them.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 11 [Day 9]
I feel like an endangered rat. I suppose it makes sense that I am as much of a discovery for Rock Lee as he is to me. That printed slip turned out to be a tag, one that’s been solidly affixed to my ear. I guess it was time for a new piercing anyways. I think I have a microchip as well, something was implanted into my back. Rock Lee turned the gravity on too, and flooded the inside with air that my sensors tell me is safe to breathe. Something tells me that this place is a research station of sorts, and an abandoned one at that. Rock Lee is the only one here, and I think he’s just been occupying this place. The stuff he’s been interacting with doesn’t seem made for him. I would think if it was, it wouldn’t require so many.. fingers. Rock Lee seems to be able to change his shape at will, so he is still adept at using everything. It’s interesting to watch him split the ends of his limbs into eight or so delicate little fingers.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 12 [Day 10]
I think Rock Lee’s taken a liking to me. I have been touched a lot. It makes me more secure in my belief that this alien is not a scientist, just an opportune hijacker. I don’t want to project my biases of terran behavior when interpreting Rock Lee’s, but I do think he likes hearing me speak. I had just mumbled something to myself as I was being unceremoniously manhandled, and Rock Lee’s demeanor seemed to change. He repeated the same actions he had just done when I had mumbled, as if he was testing to see if that would make me make the noise again. Out of curiosity, I talked at him, and I was met with what looked to me like excitement. More importantly though, I ate today. Rock Lee dropped some dense cube into what I guess might be a replicator and it spat out a block of organic feed. My suit sensors deemed it safe to eat so I really didn’t waste much time digging into it. I knew I was starving but it felt so much stronger once I actually started eating. It was embarrassing when the block was taken away from me.. although it was probably for the best. I forgot my inhibitions and I do think I overate.. my stomach kind of hurts.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 13 [Day 11]
Now that I have access to food, my body’s gone into hunger overdrive. I don’t remember ever eating this much. The food is kind of weird but it isn’t any worse than the regular rations. Rock Lee offered me water too, which I’m grateful for, although bending down to drink out of a pool feels a little humiliating. I’ve been using one of the empty water canisters to just refill, although Rock Lee seems to react more when I drink straight from the pool. Today he also left me a variety of things, maybe testing to see what I’ll interact with. I played a bit of a game with him using a blunt club shaped piece and a part of Rock Lee’s body, he would send the chunk at me and I would swing at it baseball style. I couldn’t play for long, still feeling weak from the trip. Man, I’m already hungry again…

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 17 [Day 15]
I know I don’t shower nearly as often as I should, but even I am feeling gross lately. My skin feels greasy and uncomfortable. I’m not really sure what to do about it, since I don’t want to pollute my drinking water with my gross sweaty body. I spent today trying to cobble together a new container to dump water from the pool into, but nothing was even remotely watertight. It looked more like a sad nest. One of the ones pigeons make. It was a pain, so I gave up for today.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 18 [Day 16]
I kind of gave up trying to avoid making a mess. I took off the suit, which seemed to startle Rock Lee. I filled the canisters with water, and poured them over myself after stripping. The environment in here was really cold without the suit, so I didn’t do that good a job really cleaning anything before I rushed to put everything back on. Now I’m gross and also soggy. Wasn’t a great day.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 19 [Day 17]
I think Rock Lee must have picked up on what I was trying to do yesterday because today, I was brought to a sink of sorts and given a bath. Rock Lee split off chunks to make creepy little fingers that he fished into my suit to try to take it off. I just ended up taking it all off myself, it’s easier that way. I was dunked in a dish filled with thankfully warm water and scrubbed with what I hope was soap. For a giant floating collection of rocks, Rock Lee sure is gentle. I’ve gotten a couple accidental scrapes but for the most part I’ve been handled with care. I’m definitely happy to feel clean now.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 23 [Day 21]
I’ve been feeling a lot more energetic now. I’ve been mapping this room better, although I need Rock Lee’s help to go to other rooms. Luckily he let me out for a little while into the adjacent room after I stood by the door and kinda shouted vaguely at him. He let me wander a little bit under supervision before I was picked up and carried back to the room containing my ship. It’s too bad that everything interesting is way up high, I was hoping to get a good look at all the symbols to see if I could make headway with it. If anyone could, it would be me.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 27 [Day 25]
Rock Lee seemed to figure out petting today. He’s been prodding me and holding me and the like for a while, but I reacted a bit well when he used little fingers to gently touch my scalp, which meant he was obsessed with doing it all day… I didn’t get to do as much exploring today because of it, which was annoying, but at least it was kind of funny. I’ve really been feeling like a cat lately.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 29 [Day 27]
It just clicked that there’s a bit of a pattern with the junk Rock Lee keeps bringing in here. A lot of this stuff looks like comets, or has cometlike imagery. I wonder what the deal is. Does he just think it’s cute?

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 30 [Day 28]
I’ve been feeling weird lately. Everything is weird right now obviously, but my throat feels strange, and my skin feels just kind of wrong. Maybe it’s just in my head because of the new environment.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 34 [Day 32]
Rock Lee was insatiable today with the petting. After a bath, when my skin was all exposed, he could not keep his rocky little fingers off me. Well, free massage I guess. What was more concerning was the strange sensation in my throat. I’m not sure how to describe it, it was a little like an uncontrolled growl. It wasn’t unpleasant, just felt odd. Also, I swear that the ship feels a little bit smaller inside.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 39 [Day 37]
Not much of note today. I was definitely getting caught up in my head about the size thing though, the ship seems regularly sized today. I may need to find new ways to focus my mind and keep my sanity.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 40 [Day 38]
Man, it’s already been around a month that I’ve been here. Distress channels still open to mother ship. Mommy pick me up already.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 56 [Day 54]
Rock Lee is acting extra obsessive today. Trying to initiate play a lot and basically not putting me down for hours. He did something interesting with the food too, it looked like he tried squishing it into some sort of shape. Based on all the stuff around, I’m guessing it was meant to be the shape of a comet.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 67 [Day 65]
I swear I’m having that feeling that things are shrinking again.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 68 [Day 66]
I’m just crazy again, confirmed.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 76 [Day 74]
Rock Lee turned all the lights out. He’s been in here for a while now, not leaving the room. He keeps checking some device, but I still don’t know what any of the symbols mean. I’m not too bothered because my dark vision is pretty good, but the behavior sure is weird.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 77 [Day 75]
Lights still out today. Rock Lee still hasn’t left the room.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 78 [Day 76]
Rock Lee turned the lights back on early in my cycle. Still don’t know what that was all about.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 94 [Day 91]
I haven’t seen Rock Lee at all today.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 95 [Day 92]
Finished the cycle with no Rock Lee again. Hope he shows up soon, I’m low on food.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 96 [Day 93]
A bit stressed now about Rock Lee not being here. Hungry too.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 97 [Day 93]
Crisis averted, he’s back. He definitely seemed a bit concerned about the food being gone, which I’m kind of glad about, since I’m a little mad he didn’t show up for nearly three cycles. What was he doing, anyways?

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 100 [Day 96]
Hooray, 100th log entry since the explosion.

Log 1 [S. Nara]—Entry 104 [Day 100]
100 days since getting chucked into space. Isn’t anyone getting these signals?
