Chapter Text

"Mommy?" The girl's mother hummed in response to show that she was listening. "What happens after we die?" A young Kiara Hayes asked her mother.

Her mother paused before turning to her daughter. "Well uh— no one knows. Some believe that they'll go to the angels."

"Do you believe that?" She asked her mom, curious.

Her mother nodded before giving her daughter a gentle smile. "Yes, and I think you'll go there too."

"Really? Do you think the angels will like me? When will I be seeing them?" Kiara asked with a worried frown. She didn't want the angels to hate her or be upset that she didn't see them as soon as possible.

Kiara's mother laughed. "I think that they'll love you. But you have many many years until you see them." She said as she ruffled her daughter's hair.

"I guess I'm about to find out now. Here's to hoping they like me." Kiara thought in her last moments.

REBIRTH

re·birth
/rēˈbərTH/

noun

Defined as the process of being reincarnated or born again.
"the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth"

Synonyms: revival,  resurrection,  reawakening,  renewal,  resurgence,  regeneration,  restoration.

Kiara had never thought reincarnation was possible. So she definitely wasn't prepared to wake up as an seven year old girl. She was even more unprepared for Miranda and Grayson Gilbert to enter the room she was in and start smiling at her.

~

It had been months since Kiara had been reincarnated into The Vampire Diaries as Kaylus Gilbert, the middle child of the Gilbert family. At least she was twins with Jeremy. The older twin to be precise.

Speaking of Jeremy, he was her favorite family member besides Aunt Jenna and surprisingly Uncle John.

Jeremy would follow her around like a little puppy and copy what she would do. Anytime that he had a snack that she didn't have, he would give it to her. He would even get grumpy if Elena or someone else got too close to her. It was honestly cute.

"I'll do everything I can to protect him." Kaylus thought as she remembered everything that Jeremy had to go through on the show.

Any time Aunt Jenna came over, she would tell her funny exaggerated stories about her life, even going as far as saying that she fought a demon once— although she could have been talking about her ex-boss.

"She won't be dying in the future." Kaylus promised to herself. "And I'll definitely be telling her much sooner then Elena did." Kaylus could never understand why Elena didn't just tell the people in her life. Ignorance isn't bliss. She only made Aunt Jenna vulnerable to attacks and that led her to her eventual death in the show.

And in the show, from what she could remember, John Gilbert was an ass. Even to his own family members.

But he treated her as if she was a princess that deserved nothing but the best. Every time he came over he would bring her a gift (and he would bring Jeremy a new action figure or coloring book.) He bakes with her and watches all her favorite shows with her. Uncle John was honestly more of a father then Grayson was.

"It's weird that they ended up parenting the other's child." Kaylus thought before shaking her head to think about more important things.

"He won't be sacrificing himself for Elena. Not if I can help it." Kaylus scrunched her nose up at the thought of her new sister. "Let's not get into that."

Kaylus' thoughts were cut off when her bedroom door opened. "Hey, sweetie. Me and your father are going to celebrate Elena's accomplishments in class. Your Aunt Jenna and Uncle John will be coming over. Be good for them." Miranda said and didn't wait for a response before leaving the room.

Kaylus rolled her eyes and then sighed. "Just a few more years and then they'll be dead. You can wait until then."

~

Kaylus and Jeremy had just turned eight but they didn't expect anything. Miranda and Grayson had left the previous day. They wanted to take Elena out on a vacation because they could see her 'getting stressed.'

Kaylus honestly thinks that they just don't feel like going to work and wanted to take their favorite child with them.

"Do you want to watch movies with Aunt Jenna and Uncle John?" Kaylus asked Jeremy when she saw him starting to tear up because Miranda and Grayson weren't there.

Jeremy was quick to nod. Kaylus smiled as she grabbed his hand and started to lead him downstairs.

When Kaylus and Jeremy got downstairs, they both paused in shock. The living room was decorated. There were birthday balloons and party streamers everywhere.

"They need to eat something besides cake, right? I should cook something for them." Jenna said before she started thinking of the twins favorite foods.

"You can't cook, Jenna." John reminded her. "You'll end up poisoning them." He said, half joking and half serious.

Jenna looked at John in offense before slapping his arm. "I'm not that bad." John shook his head with a laugh. "You remember 1980? I was in the hospital for more then a week."

"I apologized!" Jenna said with a blush coating her cheeks. John chuckled. "I'll do the cooking, Jen." Jenna just huffed in response.

Kaylus raised an eyebrow at the two of them before looking at Jeremy, who shook his head. Kaylus nodded before turning back to Aunt Jenna and Uncle John, giving them a smile. "What's all of this?" She asked, getting their attention.

The two of them smiled. "Well, we can't just not celebrate your birthday!" Aunt Jenna said to the two of them.

"I know it's not as big as Elena's parties but—" John started but was cut off by Kaylus running to his legs, hugging them. Jeremy doing the same thing to Jenna.

John looked at Kaylus in surpise. "It's perfect." She said as she looked up at him with a big smile.

Jeremy nodded in agreement. "We love it." He said before the twins switched so Kaylus was hugging Jenna and Jeremy was hugging John.

The two adults laugh before picking the children up.

"We got you ice cream cake." Jenna said as she started walking to the kitchen with Kaylus in her arms.

"Ice cream cake!" The twins cheered but then they both paused. "No presents?" They asked.

Jenna and John were unbothered by the twins speaking simultaneously, both of them too used to it.

"After we eat cake, we can go out and buy anything the two of you want." John said as he started to tickle Jeremy making him squeal loudly.

Kaylus started laughing at her brother, not wanting to be in his place, when she saw her Aunt Jenna's smirk and her laughter stopped. "No... Jen Jen, please don't! Ple—" Kaylus didn't get to finish begging since Jenna was already tickling her.

~

They were at the store. Jeremy was dragging Jenna around, pointing at everything he wanted despite the cart Jenna was using already being full.

Kaylus was holding John's hand, not moving.

John looked at Kaylus before crouching down. "You don't want to look around?"

Kaylus shook her head. "No, not really."

John hummed. "Well, is there anything you want? Anything else that I can get you or do for you?"

Kaylus' eyes shined. "Anything?" She asked and John nodded. "Anything." He confirmed.

"I want a bow and arrow." Kaylus said, completely serious.

John blinked. "You want a bow and arrow." He said slowly, questioning if he heard right.

Kaylus nodded excitedly. "Yeah, I saw it on a show. It was super cool. They had it in their hand and then fired, and it went woosh into the air and then bam when it hit a tree. I need to learn how to do that. I want to be that cool." Kaylus rambled and made arm movements, really selling it.

Kaylus' eyes lit up at another thought. John, seeing that, was quick to ask. "Is there anything else you want?"

Kaylus nodded. "I want to learn how to fight like that guy did in the show we watched with Jeremy. He looked amazing! He went like this and then he did this. And the guy he was fighting against cried in so much pain!" Kaylus imitated fighting movements while she was speaking.

"I need to know how to fight up against vampires and the sooner I train my body, the better." She thought as she waited for John's answer.

John chuckled before ruffling her hair. "Okay, kiddo. Whatever you want." He said causing Kaylus to beam. "Yay!" She yelled loudly before giving John a quick hug and running to Jeremy and Aunt Jenna to tell them.

John chuckled as he watched her squeal to Jeremy and Jenna.

~

"Great job, Kaylus!" She heard her Uncle John say while Jeremy and Jenna cheered.

Jeremy and Kaylus were now ten. Jeremy had begun showing an even bigger interest in art so John and Jenna signed him up for art classes, bought him sketchbooks, and bought him lots of art supplies.

Kaylus took her training very seriously. She had bow and arrow lessons every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. She went to martial arts classes every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Sunday was her rest day.

Currently, they were in the woods. Kaylus was firing arrows into the trees while John, Jenna, and Jeremy watched from behind her.

Kaylus raised her arm, wanting to see how high she could fire an arrow.

Her eyes went wide when she saw how far the arrow went up.

Jeremy and Jenna's cheers got louder while John came over to her. "That was amazing." He said before he picked her up and spun her around.

Kaylus laughed loudly in response.

~

Kaylus had an excited grin on her face making Jeremy look at her weirdly. "Kay, it's just game night. Why are you so excited? Uncle John won't even be here." Jeremy said.

Kaylus rolled her eyes. Miranda and Grayson had finally noticed that her and Jeremy prefered John over them. They didn't like it so they stopped letting John come over. If anything, that made the two of them hate their 'parents' more and so Miranda and Grayson thought having a family game night would fix things.

But Kaylus was excited despite that.

Elena has become much more of a brat and she snuck out of the house to go to the party by the falls.

And that only meant one thing.

Her 'parents' were dying tonight.

Kaylus let out a squeal before grabbing Jeremy's hand. "But Aunt Jen is coming and it's been a while since we've seen her."

Miranda and Grayson had also started inviting Jenna over less. Miranda had said that she felt Jenna was overstepping her boundaries and acting like the twins' mother. It made both Kaylus and Jeremy roll their eyes.

Kaylus didn't hesitate to tell the woman that Jenna had to step up because she was doing a piss poor job.

It got her smacked and grounded by Grayson but it was definitely worth it. The look of absolute hurt on Miranda's face made her day.

Jeremy's eyes lit up at the reminder that Aunt Jenna would be here.

Kaylus and Jeremy excitedly came into the living room, smiles on their faces.

Miranda and Grayson smiled back at them, assuming the two were smiling at them. Both their smiles fell when Kaylus and Jeremy yelled "Aunt Jenna!" And tackled the woman into a hug.

Miranda and Grayson scowled which went ignored by the other three.

"Where's Elena?" Miranda asked.

Kaylus pulled away from Jenna to answer. "She had told me that she was tired and was going to sleep in."

Miranda and Grayson sighed, upset that their favorite won't be there.

"Ready to start game night?" Jeremy asked.

~

Hours later, Miranda got a call. She looked at the phone confused before answering. Her eyes widened before she turned to Grayson. "Elena needs to be picked up. She snuck out to that party we said she couldn't go to."

Grayson was quick to grab their coats and the car keys. "Let's go."

Kaylus beamed. "It's finally going to happen!"

Later that night, Jenna got a call that Elena was in the hospital while Miranda and Grayson didn't make it.

Kaylus celebrated.

Gilbert House

Kaylus and Caroline were in her room binge watching Harry Potter and arguing about the books when Kaylus suddenly stopped talking and shuddered.

"What's wrong?" Caroline asked.

Kaylus frowned. "I don't know. I suddenly felt... Uncomfortable." Kaylus looked around her room for anything that could be the cause.

Her eyes eventually stopped at her open window. "It felt like I was being watched." Kaylus said as she continued to stare at the window.

Caroline was quick to get up and shut her window. After pulling the curtain, she turned to Kaylus with a smile. "Don't worry, if anyone is out there I can protect you." She playfully says before she 'shows off her muscles.'

Kaylus couldn't help the laughter that bubbled out.

Next Morning

Kaylus gets up early. She was the only one who knew how to cook after all. Jenna would burn everything, Elena would end up cutting herself, and Jeremy would somehow spill everything.

So, still in clad in her Scooby-Doo pajamas, Kaylus heads downstairs.

She blinked in surprise when she saw Uncle John standing in the kitchen, cooking. Apron on as he sang and danced.

Silently, she took out her phone and took a picture. She needed more blackmail anyway.

Once sure that he didn't notice, she put the phone away and came forward with a big smile. "Uncle John!" She said, beaming.

Uncle John looked up at her and froze, thinking that she had seen him sing and dance. She did but he didn't need to know that. When Kaylus pretended to look confused on why he wasn't saying anything, Uncle John assumed nothing was seen.

Uncle John smiled at her. "Hey, Kay. Did you sleep well?" He asked and she nodded in response as she went to grab a cup of coffee.

"Yeah, I slept pretty well." Kaylus answered. She then pouted when John slapped her hand away from the coffee. "I actually came down here to cook. You know how the others are." She said, her tone amused.

John laughed and nodded. "Yes, I do. And no coffee until breakfast. Besides, you need to get ready."

Kaylus playfully grumbled at John before she went upstairs. As she was walking to her room, she passed Elena's. She peeked her head in and had to roll her eyes when she saw her sister writing in her diary.

"I bet she's writing something dramatic about how she's starting fresh. As if she's not the same exact person she's always been." Kaylus thought then smirked.

She turned to Elena, putting on an innocent smile. "Do you actually enjoy doing that?" She asked.

Elena jumped and turned to look at her. "Doing what?" She asked her sister.

"Writing in that diary of yours." Kaylus responded and Elena nodded, "Yeah. Writing calms me. Helps me sort out all my feelings." She said.

Kaylus hummed and Elena raised an eyebrow at her, "Did you need something else?"

"I'm just curious... If I took it, would I see anything other then you trying so hard to be a main character of some sappy teen drama?" She asked, smile still on her face.

Elena glared at her. "I am not trying to be a main character."

Kaylus snorted. "I mean... your a cheerleader, with a blonde jock boyfriend..."

Kaylus pretended to remember. "Oh, wait. Blonde jock ex-boyfriend." She said, emphasizing the 'ex.'

Kaylus pretended to think about it for a moment. "I guess you really aren't the main character." Kaylus said and then hid her chuckles as she saw a vein appearing on Elena's forehead.

"Get out, Kaylus!" Elena demanded.

"Have fun writing!" Kaylus called as she walked away.

"Annoying Elena is the best way to start the morning." She thought with a smirk as she heard Elena slam her door.

"Toast. I can make toast." Jenna said as she began to go downstairs only to pause when she saw the dining room table filled with breakfast.

"Well don't just stare at it." John said as a way of announcing his presence.

"Oh, John!" Jenna said surprised. "When did you get in?" She asked and he smiled. "Last night. Let myself in with my key." He said.

Jenna nodded and sat down. "I thought you had business to do?"

John shook his head. "Being there for you and the kids is more important."

"Thank you." Jenna said as she hoped her face wasn't red.

"It's no issue. Now, eat up." John said as he gave her plate for her to put her food on.

"Oh, no. I can't. I'll be late an-" Jenna didn't get to finish because Kaylus came back into the room. "Don't worry, Aunt Jenna. I changed the time on your phone by two hours and set your alarm for an hour early. You have plenty of time." Kaylus said as she gave her aunt a mischievous smile.

Jenna blinked at that while John laughed.

"There you go, issue solved. Now eat, I need to make sure Jeremy is awake." John said before leaving.

Kaylus immediately grabbed a cup of coffee before grabbing a plate and sitting down.

"I don't know how you can always eat that much." Jenna said, shaking her head as she watched her niece fill her plate to the brim.

Elena finally came down and paused. "Who cooked?" She asked, confused.

"Uncle John did." Kaylus answered after swallowing a pancake.

Instead of grabbing a plate and eating, Elena went started to the coffee.

"Is there coffee?" Jeremy asked, John walking behind him.

Kaylus got up and nodded towards him. "Yeah, freshly made. I'm going to go up and get our bags."

Jeremy nodded towards his sister before he walked into the kitchen.

When he saw that Elena had a cup of coffee, he didn't hesitate to take it from her. He used the cup to hide his smirk when he heard her huff.

"Annoying Elena is always a great way to start the day." Jeremy thought.

Kaylus came back down a moment later.

"Your first day of school and I'm totally unprepared. Do any of you need lunch money?" Jenna asked as she began grabbing her purse.

Elena shook her head while the twins grabbed the money.

"Do you guys need anything else? What about-" Jenna was cut off by Kaylus.

"Jen, you have a presentation. Get going." She said and then watched amused as her aunt's eyes widened and she began to hastily grab everything she needed.

"Wait-" Aunt Jenna began.

"All of us will be fine, Jenna." Jeremy said when he saw her open her mouth. "But-" Jenna began and John grabbed her hand.

"Jenny." John said and Jenna turned to look at him. "They'll be fine. They have each other and if they need us, they know to call."

Jenna nodded, reassured. "Okay, okay. I'm leaving." She said when John started nudging her out.

Seeing that Elena was about to start, Kaylus grabbed Jeremy and dragged him outside.

Caroline's Car

Kaylus shoved Jeremy and ran towards Caroline's car.

"Ow! No fair!" Jeremy complained as he got up and walked towards the car.

"You cheated!" Jeremy said with a frown. Kaylus just shrugged, "You should have been prepared for that. Not my fault you weren't."

Jeremy grumbled as he got into the back seat.

Caroline snorted at the two of them. "How's your morning going?"

Both twins lit up. "I got to annoy Elena!" They said excited and then turned to each other confused. "When did you annoy Elena?" They asked.

Caroline groaned at the accidental twin speak. "One at a time you two."

The twins shared a look, silently deciding who should go first.

"I annoyed her just after you left to get our bags. Snagged her coffee before she could even take a sip. It was her favorite cup too." Jeremy said and Kaylus snorted.

"I annoyed her while she was still in her room, doing her usual morning diary write. I told her she was trying to be a main character and then brought up Matt." Kaylus explained.

Both Jeremy and Caroline started laughing.

"How was your morning Care?" Kaylus asked once the laughter was done.

"Absolutely horrendous! The outfit I picked out last night did not look good in the morning." Caroline began.

"Oh, I hate that!" The twins said.

"Right! And so I spent so much of my face mask time and my lotion time trying to find a good outfit." Caroline said with a frown.

"I would have never known." Kaylus said and Jeremy nodded, "You still look pretty."

Caroline smiled at the two of them.

Mystic Falls High School

"Hey, I'm going to go say hi to Bonnie." Caroline said to the twins and both of them nodded.

"Wanna try and find Tyler?" Kaylus asked and Jeremy nodded. "Yeah, sure. Although, he could be in the boy's bathroom."

Jeremy knew that Tyler sometimes hid in the bathroom to avoid Vicki.

"So? They don't have much for me to actually see." Kaylus said and Jeremy snorted.

"Also, is Vicki still trying to get with Tyler? It's been years, you think she'd take the hint." Kaylus said.

Jeremy shrugged. "I guess being Matt's friend means that she thinks she has a chance."

Kaylus rolled her eyes. "She wouldn't be able to have a chance with a fucking cockroach." She said before dragging her brother to the men's bathroom.

Men's Bathroom

A bunch of guys yelled when Kaylus entered.

"Dude, get out!" One guy yelled.

"Dude, how about no!" Kaylus mocked. "None of you have anything for me to see. Now shut up and go back to stuffing your pants and comparing your tiny dicks." She continued.

Tyler laughed. "Bruising egos like always."

Kaylus smiled, "You know it."

"Please don't encourage her, Ty." Jeremy begged, something that Tyler ignored.

Tyler couldn't help but tease Jeremy when he saw his painted nails. "Hey, Pete Wentz called. He wants his nail polish back."

Jeremy snorted. "Pete Wentz. What are you then, Carson Daly?" He teased back.

Tyler laughed. "Maybe." He said before turning serious. "How are you two?" Tyler asked the twins.

"We're good." Jeremy said and Kaylus nodded. "Why are you asking? You know how we felt about them."

"Wanted to make sure." Tyler said with a shrug.

Outside the school office.

Caroline frowned as she walked away from Elena and Bonnie. She had heard what the two said and she wished that she could be surprised.

Too busy with her thoughts, Caroline didn't notice the boy in front of her, who also didn't notice her.

"Ow!" Caroline said as she fell to the floor. "Oh God, who hit me? I-" She started, prepared to verbally attack whoever it was. That was until she saw his face.

"Are you hurt?" He asked before helping her up. Caroline shook her head and blushed. "No, no. I'm fine. I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention."

The boy smiled at her. "Don't worry about it. I also wasn't paying attention."

"So where did you move from?" Caroline blurted and the boy looked at her surprised.

"Sorry, it's just that I've never seen you and I know everyone. Oh, I haven't introduced myself. I'm Caroline Forbes, co-captain cheerleader and the executive and helper for basically every event in Mystic Falls." Caroline rambled and then went red in embarrassment when she realized.

"I'm Stefan Salvatore." Stefan said with a smile, not bothering to hide how amused he was by the girl in front of him.

"What's your schedule? I'll show you around." Caroline said before grabbing his schedule and dragging him off.

Bonnie and Elena, who went unnoticed, watched the pair leave.

History Class

"Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861, it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union." Tanner droned on.

Elena looks back at Stefan, who was on his phone. She frowned a bit and kept hoping that he would notice her. When he didn't, she grabbed her phone to text Bonnie.

Elena: HOW CAN I GET HIS ATTENTION?

Bonnie: IDK, MAY-B TRY SPEAKING TO HIM AFTER CLASS?

Elena read the message and nodded.

Stefan ignored the looks he was receiving from across the room as he typed on his phone.

Stefan: THANKS FOR SHOWING ME AROUND.

Caroline: IT’S NO PROBLEM.

Caroline:   : )

Stefan chuckled.

Caroline: THERE’S A MEET UP @ THE GRILL LATER

Caroline: WANNA JOIN?

Stefan: YES, I WOULD LOVE TO.

Caroline: YAY!!!

Stefan smiled at his phone.

When class ended, Elena turned around only to see that Stefan was gone. She furrowed her eyebrows and wondered how he left so quickly.

Salvatore Boarding House

Stefan is writing in his journal.

"I met someone today. Someone who I can see myself befriending.

Caroline Forbes.

..."

Stefan continues to write and then closes his journal.

Mystic Grill

Jeremy, Kaylus, Tyler, and Matt are all sitting together, talking and laughing.

Their conversation gets interrupted by Vicki.

"Do you guys need anything?" She asked and despite making it sound like she was speaking to everyone, it was clear that she wasn't.

She was looking directly at Tyler, a smile on her face as she batted her eyelashes.

Jeremy groaned while Matt grimaced. Kaylus made a gun shape with her hand and pretended to shoot herself.

"Maybe a refill?" She suggests as she gets closer to Tyler.

"No, thanks." Tyler said before ignoring the girl.

Vicki huffed and turned to glare at Kaylus, as if it was her fault.

Kaylus just laughs. "Since you're over here, I'd like another order of cheese fries."

Jeremy and Tyler chuckle when Vicki stomps away.

"Sorry about that." Matt says as he watches Vicki go.

Tyler shakes his head. "You have nothing to apologize for man."

"Yeah, you don't control your sister and it's not your job to look out for her." Jeremy says, bumping shoulders with Matt.

Kaylus rolls her eyes at Matt for apologizing. "Your sister is a shit person but that's her own fault. She chooses to party and do drugs and be around the wrong crowd. She's old enough to be held accountable."

Matt sighs. Every time Vicki says or does something, they end up having this conversation.

Matt goes to say something but Kaylus hits him on the head. "Ow! What did you do that for?" He asked as he rubbed the spot.

"We have this conversation like once or twice a day Matt. It's the same thing every time. Vicki does something. You apologize. We tell you not to. You blame yourself for not being a good brother.—" Kaylus says.

"—or you blame it on the fact that you two have a shit mom." Jeremy adds.

"And an absent father." Tyler says.
"Wish my father was absent." He muttered.

"And we then tell you again, that Vicki is in control of her actions. Yes, having a shit mom and an absent father contributed to her behavior but it doesn't excuse her." Kaylus continued as if she wasn't interrupted.

"And we will keep repeating it until you understand." Jeremy said while Kaylus smiled, something that scared the Donovan boy. "And I will keep hitting you until you understand." She said, making Matt wince.

"I uh, I think I understand now." Matt said quickly.

The other three laughed.

Other Side

Caroline walked in with Bonnie.

"His name is Stefan Salvatore. He lives with uncle up at the old Salvatore Boarding House. He hasn't lived here since he was a kid. Military family, so they moved around a lot. He's a Gemini, and his favorite color is blue."

Bonnie looked at her, surprised. "You got all of that in one day?"

Caroline nodded. "He told me during third and fourth period. I'm planning a June wedding."

Bonnie wished she was surprised. "You're interested in him?" She asked, she knew that Elena wasn't going to like that.

Caroline shook her head. "I'm just making friends with the guy. If you or Elena want him, you are more then welcome to go for it." She said with a smile.

Before Bonnie could say anything, Caroline had spotted Kaylus and was quick to run over without even saying goodbye.

"How's Elena doing?" Matt asks Jeremy and Kaylus.

"Are you talking about the break up or the dead parents?" Kaylus asks in return, her blunt tone making the other four splutter (Matt), laugh (Tyler and Jeremy), and spit out their drinks. (Caroline and again, Tyler.)

(Tyler was choking a bit but everyone ignored it. If the guy can handle eating a spoon full of mustard and expired caviar on a dare, then he can handle the consequences of drinking and laughing.)

"Uh I was talking about her parents." Matt says.

No one at the table believes it.

But the Gilbert twins answer anyway.

"She moped for a bit—" Jeremy started.

"—it was so peaceful for us." Kaylus interrupted. "She stayed up in her room. Wasn't bossing us around, wasn't demanding us to do things and then snitching to mom and dad when we didn't want to."

Kaylus sighed, clearly missing it.

Jeremy snorted. "Yeah, and then she bounced back and suddenly decided she wasn't going to be sad about it anymore."

Kaylus nodded, unhappy about it.
"I honestly don't know what you saw in her."

Matt shrugged. "She was pretty."

Caroline snorted. "That's why I you dated here? Seriously?"

"There are so many other pretty girls at school, why not date one of them?" Tyler questioned, genuinely confused.

Matt opened and closed his mouth.

The others just kept going.

"I mean, yeah looks are great but you should have went for personality." And it means a lot more since Caroline was saying it.

"Elena's basically like a trophy. Nice to look at, maybe nice to show off, but doesn't have much use outside of that." Kaylus said.

Jeremy laughed. "Or like one of those decorative pillows. Looks nice, but gets annoying and uncomfortable."

"I honestly don't understand how you could date her for so long." Tyler said.

"You could have dated Stacy from Cheer, or Jessie from Choir, there's Regina in our English class, Mabel from Science." Caroline said, naming all the girls on her fingers.

Matt groaned. "I get it! I get it! I have horrible taste."

The others just laughed at him.

Matt just rolled his eyes, trying and failing to hide his fond smile. “What about you guys? How are you?” He asked the twins.

Before they could answer, Tyler snorted. “I asked them earlier, they’re as happy as can be. Not that I blame them.” Tyler muttered the last part, something they all ignored.

They were all quite used to his mutterings about wishing his father gone from his life.

Kaylus nodded to confirm, “It’s great, honestly!”

“We get to see Aunt Jenna and Uncle John more, too.” Jeremy said with a grin, those two had always been the parents that they wanted.

“Speaking of seeing people more…” Tyler said with a nod in the direction opposite of them, making everyone turn as Stefan Salvatore walked in.

Matt blinked, “What’s he doing here?” He asked since most newbie’s never know where the grill is, much less that it’s the hangout spot.

“I invited him.” Caroline said, face red.

The group turned to look at her in surprise.

Kaylus and Jeremy looked at her, a slight frown on their faces. “Wait—” but they never got to ask.

Caroline, sensing their questions, quickly got up from the table. Rushing away from them to greet Stefan.

“You made it!” She said with a smile, one that he returned.

Moments Later

“How’s it been living here so far? Was it a big adjustment?” Matt asked, ever the polite boy.

Stefan gave a small smile, “I’ve been here before when I was younger, actually. So, it feels like coming home.”

Tyler snorted, much to Stefan’s confusion.

“Ignore him, it doesn’t have to do with you.” Kaylus said with a smile before she elbowed Tyler and whispered, “Can you not mention your daddy issues for five minutes?”

Tyler rolled his eyes and whispered back, “I didn’t say anything!”

“You didn’t need to!” She responded before turning back to Stefan. “So, based on your last name, I’m assuming you live in the Salvatore boarding house?”

Stefan, who had heard their conversation, hid his amusement as he replied. “Yeah, I live with my uncle, Zach.”

The group nodded, none of them asking about his parents.

“Any siblings?” Caroline questioned.

Stefan grimaced before replying. “None that I talk to.”

Kaylus let out an ‘ah’ noise. “So a crappy sibling then?”

Stefan nodded, “Damon. My older brother. I haven’t spoken to him in years.”

Jeremy winced, “We know what that’s like—having a sibling that you don’t like, I mean. You're lucky you don’t have to talk to yours.”

Kaylus snorted, “Wish we didn’t have to talk to ours. ”

This time, Tyler elbowed Kaylus. “If I can’t mention my issues then you can’t mention yours!” He whispered.

Kaylus rolled her eyes but slightly agreed not to talk about Elena.

“Do you know about the party tonight?” Caroline asked, turning Stefan’s attention to her. “It’s a back to school thing. Wanna come?”

“Are you going to be there?” Stefan asked instead of giving a reply.

The others watch as Caroline blushes and then turn to each other, all of them smirking.

“I am.” Caroline confirmed with a smile.

“Then I’ll go.” Stefan said and the conversation moved on.

The entire time, Bonnie and Elena had watched the group.

“I don’t understand why you don’t want to go over there.” Bonnie said, a confused frown on her face as the two girls keep staring at the others.

Currently, it seemed as if Kaylus had told a joke, making the entire table laugh.

“You know that Kaylus and Jeremy wouldn't welcome me. Besides, Matt’s over there too. Things have been really awkward since the breakup.” Elena said, her doe eyes looking sad.

Bonnie nodded in sympathy.

“How are you going to get to know Stefan, then?” She asked a moment later.

“I’ll go to the party at the falls and if he’s there, we can talk. I’ll have to make sure Caroline doesn’t interrupt.” Elena answered, withholding a glare at the blonde.

“How about I come over and help you pick out an outfit? Something to catch his eye.” Bonnie suggested, making Elena beam at her.

“You’re an amazing friend, Bonnie.” She said, reaching out to hold the other girl’s hand.

Falls Party

Kaylus stood, talking with Jeremy and Caroline. Or well, just Jeremy, since Caroline seemed distracted.

It appears Jeremy noticed too if the look he threw her was anything.

Kaylus gave the same look back with a nod and Jeremy turned to Caroline. “Everything okay, Bombshell?” He asked, making Caroline snap out of it.

“Uh yeah!” Caroline said. “I’m just thinking about my outfit for school. I can’t decide if I want to pick the black blouse and pink skirt or if I should go with a pink dress and black heels.” Caroline had her usual ditzy smile in place.

Which made both Gilbert siblings frown.

“Care, that act may work on Bonnie and Elena—” Jeremy started

“—Which isn’t a surprise. They're both stupid.” Kaylus interrupted.

Jeremy continued, not upset at the interruption. “But it doesn’t work on us.” He finished.

“Tell us what’s wrong, Bombshell.” Jeremy said, his eyes showing his sincerity.

“Stefan..” Caroline said after a moment and then her eyes went wide as Kaylus and Jeremy looked murderous. She quickly explained before they could try hunting him down. “He hasn’t done anything! I just haven’t seen him and he said he’d be here.”

The two calmed down and Caroline, seeing this, continued. “I looked for him earlier before meeting up with the two of you and I still haven’t seen him.”

“How about we help you look?” Jeremy suggested. “He may be on the other side.”

And so, the three of them began walking around. Looking for Stefan.

“I think I see him!” Kaylus said to the others, bringing their attention to the direction she was pointing to.

And she was right. There was Stefan Salavtore. Leaning up against a tree, drink in hand.

“Well, what are you waiting for?” Jeremy asked, and the twins nudged her in his direction.

Caroline gave them a glance before walking forward. However, before she could get to him, someone else did.

Caroline, and the twins, watched as Elena Gilbert came up to Stefan, who smiled at her arrival.

Jeremy and Kaylus shared a look before pulling Caroline away.

Not glancing back as Elena continued to talk to Stefan.
