Work Text:

Toshinori doesn't remember exactly what happens after he bumps into someone in the crowd.

All he knows is one second he's on a lovely outing with Inko-san, and the next he's dizzy beyond belief and a slightly off-colour Nana is gently placing her hand on his shoulder.

Toshinori is so in shock that his mentor is alive again that he barely notices the discrepancies he usually would have. How Nana is shorter and a little more green-toned than usual. How she lacks the characteristic muscles that she shows off with pride. How she'd be patting his back and urging him back to his feet so that they could get out of the rush of people.

No, Toshinori only notices that his mentor is alive again. She has the same kind eyes and gentle smile he remembers from when he was a teenager. The same signature hairstyle and fierce protectiveness in her too-green eyes that look over him worriedly.

He must've hit his head or been shot into some alternate future. Toshinori remembers Nana's face as she bled out in front of him.

But here she is.

Nana gently guides Toshinori to his feet. They make their way out of the crowd together, some worried-looking stranger trailing behind them both and wringing their hands nervously.

So caught up in the rush of emotion seeing his mentor brings up inside of him, he doesn't catch the words Nana exchanges with the stranger. Toshinori is too distracted by the way a sure confidence creases Nana's brow, the way she soothes the panicking civilian.

When she turns and holds onto Toshinori's hands — like a strong breeze will drag him away from her — he finds himself choking up. There's a look of concern on her face, but Toshinori is trapped in a memory too far away to register it.

They're standing in a mall after closing, when it's empty except for them.

Nana held his hands like this back then as well. Squeezing his fingers with hers as she tells him that he needs to take her Quirk. Nana tells Toshinori that it's up to him now.

Tells him that he needs to take on the mantle of One For All. So that in case she never comes back from her destined battle with All For One her- their legacy can continue on.

She calls him her son then, gently holds his face just like she is right now.

The crowd has thinned out by now, it's only Toshinori and Nana and the worried stranger. They look less afraid now, almost apologetic if Toshinori had to guess.

He asks if they might be the reason that his head feels like it's spinning.

They nod once, apologising for using their Quirk on him accidentally. Toshinori waves them off with a smile, one more genuine than he's had on his face in years. Nana looks so sad for some reason.

Nana asks him if he knows who she is.

Of course he does, how could Toshinori forget?
