    Dream doesn't want to think about that, but he dwells on it anyway.

    In all his life, Nightmare may well be the only person who ever cared about him because of who he was and not because of what he could do, and look how that ended.

    Giving up isn't Dream's modus operandi. He's not the sort to back down from anything. He faces every challenge with the same amount of vigor, regardless of what it is, what it will cost to overcome, how much it will hurt to face.

    Still, he can't help but think maybe giving up on the idea of ever having friends, ever having someone who cares about him just because he exists, might be prudent.
