Self-Sacrificing Vow

Summary:

Alastor is not often paralysed with fear

Work Text:

Magic was a wonderful thing, in the hands of a righteous witch or wizard that is. It can heal, transform, and create everlasting bonds. It can also destroy and harm anything in its path.

When the Order of the Phoenix first came together, each of them had silently pledged to put their lives on the line, to sacrifice themselves over others if the situation so called for it. And it did, many, many times.

Despite his speculation, when Voldemort was destroyed the night he encountered Harry Potter, Alastor had thought he may be able to provide relative peace to (Y/N). Or at least enough peace where she wouldn’t have to take on suck a self sacrificing vow again.

Of course, despite his constant planning and his cautious towards anything that could cause harm to her, politics and allegiances change. Foes rise from the grave and wars are fought.

Alastor knew he was naive to think he could protect her from danger. Deep down he knew that she would be in ever increasing peril the longer she was involved with the war and the Order but even then, there was some part of him that she would be fine.

But she was not fine.

She was bleeding out in front of him. They had brought her back the the Burrow, St Mungo's was too dangerous, anybody could track their movements there. Molly and Arthur had insisted that their home be used at any point if needed, Alastor had been unusually quick to take them up on their offer.

But once he got her safely to where Molly could tend to her wounds, Alastor stood watching, powerless to help. He couldn't bring himself to move, it was as if he couldn't feel any of his limbs, digits, or extremities. He hadn't felt like this since he lost his leg in the first war, and even then that feeling was much more desirable compared to now because at least then it was him in pain.

He could deal with any torture except from watching her suffer, he couldn't take that. And yet he couldn't bring himself to leave the room, he had a duty to stay by her side. Nobody needed to know he stayed because he was too fearful to even move
