“What’s in this?” Pearl asks around a mouthful of glazed golden pastry.
“Just strawberry compote! And honey, of course.”
“Of course,” she echoed, “wouldn’t be signature Dawn cooking without it.”
Katherine laughs and takes a bite of her own. Far more carefully than Pearl, who’s still working off the instinct to treat every meal like her last - daintier, as befitting a princess. No flakes of pastry fall like they have been on to the fabric of Pearl’s shirt. (She’s been rescuing them with her fingertips. She hopes Katherine doesn’t find it gross.)
“Good work, though.”
Katherine blushes. “Well, thank you.”
