Do you Blame Yourself?

Notes:

Technically canon compliant with my father America reboot, but not necessary to read.

No shipping in this fic, just a friendship that was lost.

Work Text:

"Do you Blame yourself?"

America looked over at Soviet. She sat down next to him. She was beautiful just like... like what? She was always beautiful. Something was off but her smile, her firey hair all looked correct.

"W-what?"

"Well, it's quite common in this situation for a patient to fee a kind of, guilt."

Something was wrong, America could feel it.

"W-what Situation?"

"The Accident."

America blinked and Soviet's right eye was bleeding, blood pouring down her face. She was gone. He had seen it happen. Soviet had had one eye as long as he had known her and she had just melted away. Turned to dust in front of his eyes. How could he have forgotten and yet she was there alive once more.

America blinked. It was dawn. Birds chirped. Soviet was back to normal. His Soviet was alive here, with the birds singing and the light breeze and the dawn sunlight hitting her just right to amplify her beauty. She had been just like him, only it killed her, leaving him all alone. Losing the one person who might have truly understood him. She was a great friend, and a great enemy. America missed her dearly.

"It's quite common to invent blame or to create a causality, when in reality-"

Soviet placed a hand on America's shoulder and he woke up to stare at the ceiling. He could hear her say what everyone else had said,

"...It was completely out of your control."
