Nothing was going in accord to Dazai’s plan. From the moment he and Chuuya parted ways, he knew things wouldn’t end well. Having to separate wasn’t part of the plan on the first place, but there were more guards than expected and the risk of being trapped was too high for them to go together.
Chuuya was covering the first to floors from the building, while Dazai the third and fourth. It had been never wrecking to say the least; one mistake could end with him dead, because opposite to Chuuya, his ability wouldn’t do anything against non-ability users and one gun only wouldn’t be of help against twenty men.
Having found the director’s office, Dazai began picking the lock with a paper clip he had on his pocket. Once he heard the “click” from the door, he sighed relieved and opened it trying to be as silent as possible.
There was no one inside, the lights were turned off and it looked pretty empty, but Dazai knew better than anyone that it could be a trick to confuse anyone who decided to infiltrate there, just like him.
He walked behind the big wooden desk in the middle of the room and, while keeping his eye on the door, ran his hand under the drawers looking for something that’d give him a clue. Finally, he felt a little bump under his fingers and pulled it to see what it was; a little key was kept inside a plastic bag, which Dazai found to be matching to one of the drawers he wasn’t able to open before.
Using his new acquisition to unlock it, he found some archives, but none were of help. When he lifted the last folder, he noticed how at the moment his knuckle knocked against the end of the drawer, it sounded hollow.
A false bottom.
Taking out everything to see better, he found a little gap in between one of the sides of the drawer where he could press with his nail to take out the thinner layer of wood covering what looked like a small case.
“This is it” if he could scream in joy, he’d definitely do it. But it wasn’t the time.
Returning the piece of wood to its place along with the rest of the folders, Dazai took the case with him. He was about to leave the office when someone so much taller stood in front of him.
Having to put his head back to look at him, Dazai quickly realized the man was at least 190cms, there was no way he could win against him.
Gripping the gun he carried on his waistband, Dazai took one step back and lifted it pointing at the guy’s face, who only grinned as if watching a slim and small fifteen-year-old threatening to shot him was the funniest thing.
If Dazai was being honest, he didn’t want to shoot. Not for mercy or something like that, just because the sound of the gun would alert the rest of the guards and he’d be fucked until Chuuya was able to go help him.
“You won’t be doing anything with that, young man.”
So, the guard knew about his situation too, that was a big disadvantage for him. But being realistic, only by seeing him anyone could tell he wasn’t the best at physical combat.
Dazai put his finger on the trigger, trying to think in a way to get out of that situation. There were no windows in the room, neither another entrance. The man was covering the entire door, and the lack of light wasn’t helping him to look for anything he could use.
The man must’ve noticed the way he hesitated, because from one moment to the other Dazai was being pinned to the ground with a gun pointing at his stomach. His own had fell from his hand the moment he was pushed. The case, on the other hand, was pressed against his back and with no chance of the other taking it from him.
“I have no desire of dying in your hands.”
Dazai raised his knee hitting the man on the balls, quickly rolling to the side so he could slip out from under him and kicked the gun out of his hand. The guard groaned with anger, looking at Dazai with gritted teeth at the time he pulled out a knife from the case on his waist.
The man slashed the air with the knife in an attempt to catch Dazai, but he put the case in front of him instead, realizing it didn’t cut through. That’d be of help.
Dazai ran to the door, leaving the room while turning around to see the man running after him. There was no time to be discreet, he fled down the hallway looking for the stairs praying to not find any other guard on his way.
Of course, luck wasn’t on his day; the moment he turned to go down the third floor a group of guards where right at the end of the aisle, none of them saw him, so Dazai caught his breath and went back to see how far was the man following him.
Noticing he hadn’t reached the hallway he was at, Dazai tried to open the door from the room next to him, finding it unlocked and slipping inside.
It was some kind of library; he hid behind one of the bookshelves and was finally able to breath. Listening closely, Dazai could hear the man’s footsteps outside, his shadow visible from the gap under the door where the light entered.
“Has any of you seen a child?”
The answers from the other guards were muffled by the closed door, but Dazai could recognized the tone as a negative one and relief washed over him.
Now he had to find Chuuya and get out of there.
But it wouldn’t take him to long, to his own delight.
Gunshots were heard from the floor behind him and Dazai instantly knew Chuuya had been found. The guards from outside the room ran in the stair’s direction, and as Dazai heard them go away, he slipped out of the room too and went to see what had happened.
Chaos was an understatement.
Everyone was shooting in all directions, Dazai was having a hard time finding a way to cross without being hit by any bullet and the case, even being bulletproof apparently, wasn’t big enough to help him cover up. He could hear Chuuya’s voice coming from the other end of the aisle, it shouldn’t be that hard to reach him then.
Dazai gathered some courage and crossed the hallway to cover himself with one of the metal columns, no one had seen him yet and he had to take advantage of that. He continued walking towards Chuuya, trying to get the redhead to notice him so they could get out of there.
But then a hand stopped him by grabbing him by the shoulder.
“There you are.”
Dazai didn’t even had the chance to turn around before he felt the knife he was threatened with before stabbing him from the back, he could only bite his hand to stop himself from screaming. Swinging the arm which he was carrying the case with to the back, Dazai took impulse to turn around and hit the guy with it on the face, which gave him enough time to take the gun that slipped off the other’s jacket and shot the man dead.
There were already gunshots around for anyone to notice either way.
Leaving the corpse behind, Dazai felt the adrenaline leaving his body and making the wound on his back hurt like hell. He crouched down, trying to see how bad it was. His hand went to touch the stabbing opening and when he put pressure on it, he felt like he was about to faint.
It was on the right side; his kidney was most probably damaged, and the size of the injury was making him bleed out faster than he thought. Dazai had to think fast before anyone else could find him and kill him. Looking at his hand splattered in blood, he remembered he was practically covered in bandages. Unraveling most of them from his left arm, Dazai lifted his shirt to place them around his stomach, tying a knot on the front and placing his coat in a way it wasn’t noticeable.
Breathing a couple times before making any move, Dazai put his hand on the wall next to him to help himself stand up. The world spun around him, and his vision blackened for a couple seconds, but he had to keep on moving unless he wanted to die in the middle of the enemy’s base.
Walking the last of the way, he waved at Chuuya from behind the guards that were shooting at him, panicked at the way he was controlling the bullets with his gravity, and none had hit him. Chuuya nodded when he saw Dazai, using the bullets from around him to shoot the guards and went jogging to Dazai’s side.
“Did you get it?”
Dazai lifted the case, showing it to Chuuya, even when the movement caused him to almost hiss in pain.
“It’s here, let’s go.”
Both of them began walking to the stairs that lead to the first floor, Dazai doing his best to hide the pulsing pain on his back and the wobbling of his legs whenever they made a turn, his dizziness was getting worse by every second and cold sweat had already covered his entire body. Mori would be so mad.
When they reached the first floor, Dazai swooned to the side, not being able to stop himself before making it noticeable. Chuuya caught him by pulling Dazai’s arm, a worried expression now in his face.
“Hey, are you okay? Did you get shot?”
“Chibi, I’m fine” he sighed, pulling his arm out of Chuuya’s grip and continuing walking to dissimulate.
But Chuuya wasn’t buying any of that, he knew by firsthand how stubborn and prideful Dazai could be, and being injured wasn’t something he’d admit that easily.
“Oh, yeah?” his tone sounded mad, but there was a hint of concern behind it, “then let me see, take off you coat.”
“No.”
“Dazai, this is not a game. Take off you coat, if you aren’t injured, then I don’t see why you would refuse.”
“Ugh, can’t a dog stop barking even once? Leave it, Slug, it’s nothing. We have to give this to Mori.”
“Don’t try to be all responsible now” Chuuya tsked, pulling Dazai from one of the sleeves of his coat and pulling it off.
The moment Dazai’s shirt came in sight to Chuuya, he gasped and went to examine it. Dazai tried to walk away but Chuuya’s embrace was stronger than before and his own energies were almost gone, so he could do nothing but stand there while Chuuya lifted his shirt to look at the wound.
“It’s not that bad.”
“Not that bad?!” he sounded shocked, worse than the first time Dazai called him dog, “Dazai, this looks terrible, there’s a lot of blood, how are you still standing? Aren’t you dizzy? Drowsy at least?”
“Just a little, but does it matter?” Dazai tried to brush it off, but Chuuya seemed determined to not let him take another step, “look, let’s go to Mori’s, we give him the case and then we can go to the infirmary, deal?”
“You’re more of an idiot than I thought if you think I’m approving that” Chuuya huffed, pulling out his phone and dialing the cab to take them back, “I am going to Mori’s, and you are going to the infirmary as soon as we get to the Port Mafia. No complains, I don’t want to listen more nonsense coming from you.”
Dazai couldn’t refuse, given the fact that Chuuya was already informing their situation through the phone. He kept staring at Chuuya, waiting for the other to finish the call when everything became blurry, his whole body went colder than before, and his legs trembled with the last effort he made to keep himself standing.
Shit, he was going to faint.
Trying to catch Chuuya’s attention, he was only able to brush his arm before crashing onto the ground.
That hurt.
“Dazai!”
The world went black.
