Work Text:

Here lies Mia Fey - a sister, a daughter and an inspiration to many.

—

(Mia’s body is buried in the ground. Part of her soul is there, too. It cannot see.)

—

“Mia. Hi. Uh.” Silence. “Sorry, I - sorry for crying again. You always said ‘a lawyer never cries until it’s over’, but - it is, isn’t it? It’s over. You’re - gone. Can I -” a prolonged pause. “I can cry now, right?”

Sniffling, then shuffling. A soft thump. “Here. I got you some flowers. I didn’t - I don’t know which ones are your favourite, so I just got you lilies.” A wet laugh. “Sorry. Thank you.”

Coughing, and the sound of someone blowing their nose. “I have to go now, but - you’ll be watching over us, right?” Movement. “This badge, it’s all thanks to you. So I’ll pursue justice, and I won’t cry until it’s all over. I promise.”

“Thank you for everything.”

—

“Hello, Ms. Fey. …I asked Wright where your - grave was. I apologize if I am intruding. However, I simply wanted to -” a throat clearing. “I wanted to apologize. For the things I said and did, back when we fought against each other in court.”

Another throat clearing. “Thank you for helping Wright all this time. He misses you.”

Movement. “I shall take my leave now, I think. I doubt you’d want me here for long. …Rest in peace, Ms. Fey.”

—

“Hey sis, it’s me, Maya! I got kicked out of the office today for distracting Nick, hah, so I came here instead!”

Movement, like someone is sitting down. “So, how are you? Is the afterlife treating you well? I hope so.” A quick pause, just enough time to inhale. “Oh, you know what? The other day I went to the mall, you know the one near the village? The one where you took me to get milkshakes for the first time? Yeah, so I went there for some stuff and I ran into your old classmates! Can you believe it? Hey, Mia, what sort of impression did you leave that they still remembered you, after all this time?” A laugh.

“Anyway, so they came up to me and - and they thought I was you, hah, that’s so funny, right? I mean, I don’t even look that similar to you, well I guess except for the… we’re just - j- just -”

An abrupt pause. Then, suddenly subdued - “I look so much like you. It shocks me sometimes. It shouldn’t, I know, but -”

More shuffling. A frustrated inarticulate noise. “Why did you leave me behind, Mia? Every time, you’ve left me behind. It’s not fair. You -”

A sob.

“Mia, I miss you. Come back. Please.”

—

“Mia -”

Silence.

A deep breath in. “I can’t see anymore, did you know that?” A laugh. It sounds hollow. “Well. I can. But -”

More silence. “Sorry. I can’t do this.”

—

“Um, hello? You’re Maya’s sister, right? I’m, um, Pearl. But - Mr Nick and Maya call me Pearls! Or Pearly! You can call me that too!”

Shuffling. “You’re dead, right?” A pause. “Which means…you’re where all the ghosts are, right?” A deep inhale.

“Can I ask you something? Are you happy?”

—

“Mia. It’s Lana. I couldn’t attend your funeral, I’m sorry.” A soft touch. “I won’t forget you, Mia, I promise. I hope you’re happy and safe, wherever you are.”

A swallow. “I loved you, Mia Fey.”

“The others did too.”
