Work Text:

Mateo found himself tiring out as he drove down the long roads, ones that seemed nearly never-ending. Thankfully, they weren’t very busy, at least not as busy as usual. It was about eleven p.m, so most people around would be comfortable at home by now. Lucky bastards.

To Mateo’s right is Diego, sitting in the passenger seat. His feet were up, crossed at his ankles. He had his hat on, and he was looking out the window, humming a tune that Mateo didn’t recognize. Diego’s left hand was resting on Mateo’s knee. The radio was quiet, the singer muffled in the background of their journey.

It had been Diego’s idea for the two to go on a road trip, just the two of them, exploring the great city of Mexico. A time for the two to get away, get their minds off Cecilia and the Pederson project as a whole. At first, Mateo hesitated. He didn’t know if it was a good idea to just stop thinking about work– what would Cecilia think? Surely, she’d be upset… but Diego helped get his mind off the stress.

Mateo also couldn’t deny how good it would be to just spend some time with Diego, away from everything. Just them, the road, and the beauty of the night.

“Mateo?” Diego’s soft voice brought Mateo out of his thoughts, and Mateo turned to look at his companion curiously as the car stopped at a red light. Diego looked back at him, a small smile on his face.

“¿Estás bien?” Diego asks, “You look tired.”

“I am.” Mateo admitted, looking back to the road. His eyes were starting to close. He had been driving for about four hours now. He liked hanging out with Diego, no, loved it– but he was burnt out.

Diego’s thumb gently rubs the fabric covering Mateo’s knee, his tone loving and concerned.

“Hey, pull over. Let me drive for a while.”

Mateo looked back to Diego, almost saying no– but he wanted the rest. He wanted to be able to prop his feet up and lean back against the seat, completely relaxing and listening to the radio without paying attention to the road. “Are you sure?”

“Sí, sí,” Diego nodded, bringing his feet down. Mateo didn’t have time to say anything before Diego was suddenly taking off his seatbelt and opening the passenger seat. The light was still red, and nobody seemed to be around– yet, he was still just walking on a public road. Mateo was about to say something, but Diego had already walked over to the driver’s side, smirking as he beckoned for Mateo to get out.

Typical Diego.

Mateo scoffed, amused, as he unblocked his seatbelt and got out. “Hay que tener cuidado,” He told him in a quiet tone, unable to bite back a smile. “You’re gonna get yourself killed one day if you’re not careful.”

Diego chuckles and presses a quick kiss to Mateo’s cheek, starting to grin.

“What? Are you worried ‘bout me, mi amor?” Diego asks cheekily, clearly enjoying and getting some fun out of the situation. Diego’s skin gets lit with green suddenly as the light changes once more, and Mateo sees a car coming up behind them from a distance, snapping him out of the moment as he gets to the passenger seat.

“Get in the car, you goof.”
