I Won't Leave You

Summary:

What if, Sabine and Ezra escaped Peridea together.

Sabezra Week, Day Three ● What If/Fix It

Notes:

Here is my submission for day three of Sabezra Week. Personally, if I were Sabine, I would've let Ezra pull me up onto that ship without a moments hesitation.

I made some slight tweaks to what happens in the finale but I hope you enjoy it all the same!

Work Text:

The jump was too big even for a skilled Jedi like himself; he’d never make it.

“I can’t make that jump,” Ezra told Sabine as the gap between them and the Chimaera increased.

They’d given it their best shot. Together with Ahsoka, they had managed to make it to the Dathormiri fortress and fend off most of Thrawn’s Night Troopers but all hope of making their big escape seemed to be gone. But Sabine wasn’t about to give up; not after all she’d been through to get here. She’d kept her promise to Ezra and she sure as hell wasn’t about to let him down now, not when they were so close. They were going home.

“Yes, you can,” she assured him as she took a few steps back.

“I appreciate the confidence but –,”

“I’ll push you first and you pull me across,”

Ezra looked back at her. She was still so fearless and determined as he remembered. That was one of the many things he loved about her. He had every faith in her but it was too much of a risk, even by his standards. The Chimaera groaned again as it progressively got further away from them.

“Sabine -,”

“Ezra,” Sabine said firmly, “I can do this,”

He looked back at the star destroyer with uncertainty. Time was ticking and he only had a matter of seconds to make a decision.

“Ezra! The longer you hesitate, the harder this gets, come on!”

Ezra wasn’t about to argue; he knew better than to after growing up with Sabine. Besides, there was no one else, except maybe Kanan, that he trusted with his life more than her.

“Okay,”

He ran back towards her and knelt down, ready to make his long run up. He glanced across to her, completely in awe as she gave him a slight nod, letting him know she was ready when he was.

“Go!”

Ezra took off, running as fast as his legs would let him and leaped off the edge. Just as he was about to plunge to his most certain demise, he felt a blast of Force energy catapult him higher in the air, sending his body hurtling towards the ship. With his arms outstretched, he caught himself and hung from the edge of the ship, mustering up enough energy before pulling himself up and pushing one of the two Storm Troopers off. The other was only inches from retaliating but a blast from Sabine’s position, took him down in one shot.

She’d done it.

“Alright! Come on, your turn,” Ezra shouted.

Sabine smiled up at him, excitement building inside her as she turned to take her run up. They were finally getting out of here. Together. However, her elation was short lived when she heard the distant thrashing of lightsabers and blasters echoing behind her. Her master, Ahsoka was in deep battle with the rest of the troopers and Elsbeth and it looked as though she was losing. She stood there, conflicted while everything seemed to move in slow motion around her. Ahsoka was struggling to fight them off and was now one lightsaber down from what she could see. She couldn’t leave her, she had to help her master.

“Sabine, there’s no time, come on!”

Ezra’s desperate calls went straight through her as the troopers pushed Ahsoka back and back. Sabine gulped, feeling sick to her stomach as her head and heart battled each other. Ezra could see Sabine standing there frozen as Ahsoka did her best to take them down. He knew deep down she wouldn’t leave her master there alone and that their near escape together may be no longer be a reality.

“Sabine!”

Ahsoka’s eyes fell on her padawan as she drew the enemy closer to where Sabine stood.

“Sabine, you must get to the ship!” Ahsoka told her firmly as she blocked a hit and a sinister laugh escaped Morgan Elsbeth.

“I can’t leave you; you need me –,”

“Ezra needs you more, now go, that’s an order!”

Sabine almost defied her but before she had a chance, she felt herself launch into the air, feeling the full power of the force pull her across the void below and realised it was Ezra. She fell into him, his arms wrapping around her as she caught her breath.

“It’s okay, you’re alright,” Ezra mumbled against her.

“Why did you do that?” she spat, pushing against Ezra’s chest and turning back to look down at the fortress below, “I can’t leave her, take me back!”

“It’s too late, Sabine!”

“She’s alone down there, Ezra, we have to help her, now take me back!”

“I can’t do that Sabine, Ahsoka knows what she’s doing, I’m not leaving you behind!”

“I’ve had ten kriffing years without you, Ezra Bridger, I can look after myself!”

“I lost you once Sabine and I’m not about to lose you again, no matter how brave you are!”

Sabine could feel her eyes filling with tears as Ezra did his best to stop her from jumping off the edge. He pulled her now shaking body into his embrace and held her close. Sabine closed her eyes tight, burying her face into Ezra’s chest as they flew further away, getting them closer to home. Aware that they had very little time until they were most certainly going to get caught, Ezra placed a soft kiss to Sabine’s head then led her away from the scene down below.

Eventually, Sabine and Ezra managed to get away from Thrawn’s ship and before long they were on their way back to Lothal, with Ezra at the controls of the escape ship.

Sabine slept for most of the journey as she sat in the chair beside Ezra in the cockpit. They approached the newly liberated planet before long and touched down upon the grassy plains of Lothal. Ezra switched off the engines and glanced over at Sabine who was stirring. Reaching over, he gave her a gentle shake and watched as her amber eyes began to slowly open and adjust.

“Hey, we’re home,” Ezra whispered.

She sat up gradually and looked out of the window. Lothal was sunny and bright, with its lush green fields stretching for miles from where they sat.

They’d done it.

“C’mon,” Ezra said, lending his hand out to her.

Sabine looked at his outstretched hand and smiled lightly before interlacing her fingers with his, letting him pull her up to her feet.

The pair winced when the sun hit their eyes as they made their way off of the ship but soon widened when they were greeted by Hera, Chopper and the rest of the rebel fleet; blasters pointed directly at them. As the smoke from the ship’s engines cleared, Hera realised who they were and ordered the others to lower their weapons. Her heart grew full when she noticed their intertwined hands and a grown-up Ezra standing before her.

“Ezra? Sabine?”

“Hi Hera,” Ezra smiled, giving Sabine’s hand a gentle squeeze, “We’re home,”

Hera wasted no time and rushed over to them, enveloping them in her arms and held them close. No words needed to be said, Hera just embraced the moment, relieved to have her kids back. Ezra hadn’t sensed Chopper roll over to them until he received a zap to his leg.

“Ow!” he groaned as he looked down at the droid, “I can see you haven’t changed,”

Chopper warbled something sassy back and Ezra patted him on the head, secretly delighted to see him again.

As evening began to fall over Lothal, Sabine took Ezra to the Spectre’s Mural in the capital; something she had promised to do if they ever got home. Ezra took it all in and glanced over to the image of Kanan.

"I just hope I made him proud,”

Sabine hummed softly as she joined him and took his hand.

“You did,” she assured him, she only wished she could be certain that she had done the same for Ahsoka.

Ezra turned to Sabine, taking her other hand and looked into her eyes. Sabine’s stomach rolled over with nerves and she felt her pulse quicken. They were so close, only inches away from each other’s lips and she was unsure resist him any longer.

“I realised something,” Ezra began.

“What was that?”

“I never thanked you,”

Sabine blushed and gave a light shrug.

“I knew I could count on you,”

Blue eyes met amber as Ezra repeated the first thing, he’d said to her only a day ago, making Sabine’s heart skip a beat. They both began to chuckle nervously when Ezra brought his hands up to caress her face, his lips hovering against hers.

“Are you going to kiss me?” Sabine whispered.

“I really hope so,” Ezra whispered back.

Sabine smiled and beat him to it, closing the gap between them. It was tender and gentle and well worth the wait. Ezra slid his arms around Sabine’s waist and lifted her up off her feet as she ran her fingers through his unruly hair and tugged at it in an attempt to get him closer. After what felt like an eternity, Ezra pulled away, his eyes closing at the touch of Sabine’s fingers brushing across the twin scars on his cheek.

“So what now?” Ezra asked.

Sabine smiled as she kissed him softly once more before taking his hand in hers.

“Let’s go home,”
