“Quite the opposite. I think he would be very angry with me if he knew I had.”

Elrond had long imagined being asked this question, though he had never imagined it from Maedhros. “We have a speech half pieced together,” he said. “In it we say we are grateful for everything, grateful not to have been killed the moment you realized the Silmaril was gone.”

Maedhros raised an eyebrow. “You nearly were. There was a bit of a panic, after. I wanted—well. I thought perhaps we should be done with it. But Maglor said we would have to kill him also, so you may be grateful for that as well.”

I have been digesting this since I read it and I genuinely think it’s one of the most clever fics I have ever read. I had to unfold it like I was taking a complicated piece of origami back apart. It is also very hot and it feels BAD (complimentary). There are a lot of unstated things happening in this fic as it is in the POV of a very young man interpreting the actions of much older men and it’s worth really picking at it like an archeological dig to find all the little petrified things they’ve got lodged in their mental cliffsides.
