Chapter Text
Natasha was reading, when she felt two sets of eyes staring at her. She smirked, but made no movement to reveal she knew they were there. She could hear the whispers, the little hushes they were throwing at each other. She bit her lip to keep from laughing when she heard the squeaking of their shoes.
“Natty?” she heard Wanda call out, her voice low, almost a whisper.
“Yes?” Natasha responded, her eyes on the words of the book, no longer reading.
“What is Hallo-ween?” Pietro asked, his voice slow as he worded the letters.
Natasha closed the book and put it to the side, looking at the two pairs of eyes staring up at her. She smiled fondly.
“Halloween is a day people dress up and ask for candy,” she said, keeping it simple for the children.
“Why?” Wanda asked, tilting her head just slightly.
“Because people thought it would be fun.”
Natasha watched as the twins exchanged looks, before looking up at the older woman. “Why?” Pietro asked, a grin on his face.
Natasha let out a sigh, knowing what was going to happen. It was refreshing to see the twins so relaxed, so open with her. When they were found in Hydra’s lair in Sokovia, they were so scared, so shy, so malnourished. The Avengers brought them back and did everything in their powers to help the children. In the months since arriving at the Avengers’ Compound, the twins’ separate identities shined through their trauma, but their mischievous ways did too.
Natasha enjoyed being the receiving end, seeing the lights in their eyes shine as they thought they were being sneaky. The twinkle, it always brightened Natasha’s day.
“Do you want to ask questions? Or do you want to get costumes?”
Wanda and Pietro looked at each other. “We pick?” Wanda asked, her Sokovian accent thick.
Natasha nodded her head. “Yes, you can pick whichever you want.”
“We be Avenger?” Pietro questioned, as he vibrated in place. He looked so excited.
“You can be any Avenger you want,” Natasha told them, watching as they high-fived. “Go get your jackets.”
She watched as Pietro zoomed out of the room and Wanda ran after him, her little legs not going as quick.
Kate walked into the kitchen, in her costume. She rolled her eyes seeing that no one in the team was dressed up. Tony and Pepper were standing off to the side. Sam was stuffing his face, Clint was talking to his family on the phone. Thor was drinking, and Bruce was looking at his iPad. Rhodey was making sure the twin’s pumpkins were ready. She heard someone walk up behind her. She beamed when she saw Yelena walk in behind her, but then it dropped when she saw that she was not dressed.
“Where’s your costume?” Kate asked, looking at the t-shirt the other girl was wearing.
Yelena shrugged. “I am not dressing like my sestra’s парень.”
Kate pouted, “But it would be cool. I mean, I’ll be Natasha, and you can be Steve. It’s a good couple costume.”
“You are dressed like my sestra. It makes me uncomfortable,” Yelena commented, her eyes looking at the catsuit Kate was wearing.
Kate glared at her, just as the other teenager in their team walked in. She grinned, walking up to him to give him a high-five.
“Obi, a pleasure,” she greeted, beaming at the male teen.
“It is great to be in your presence,” Peter returned, looking excited.
“Hurry up Red! The teens are boring us!” Tony called out, only for Pepper to slap his shoulder.
Yelena, Kate and Peter all turned their glares to the billionaire.
“We’re coming,” Steve responded, walking in, holding one of the baby avenger’s hands. Natasha followed behind holding the other one’s. The two children were covered in white sheets.
“Please don’t tell me they are going to be ghosts,” Sam said, putting his sandwich down. Bucky reached over and stole it.
Kate squinted her eyes, before grinning. “Is it going to be a reveal?” She looked at the other Avengers, Pepper, and Laura, who was on FaceTime, excitement on her face. Everyone was leaning forward with anticipation, with the exception of Tony, who was leaning back with a smirk.
“Everyone ready?” Natasha asked, grabbing the top of one of the blankets. She pulled it off, revealing the little boy, painted in green with purple shorts. His usual white hair was painted black for the night. He let out a growl and shook his fists. “Mini Hulk!”
Bruce looked surprised, and his cheeks were slightly red. He smiled, before nodding his head. “I approve.”
Pietro beamed, clapping his hands. He turned to Steve and Wanda. Steve reached for the top of the blanket and looked at the Avengers.
“And I present you,” he started, before pulling the blanket off.
Kate blinked, before letting out a little laugh. Wanda was standing there in a mini suit of armour. Her face plate was off, and she was beaming.
“Little Iron Girl,” he said, letting out a small laugh.
Tony was quick to clap, and Kate knew why he looked so smug before.
“You did this?” Pepper asked, sounding proud.
Tony nodded his head. “She came to me a few days ago. And we worked very hard, didn’t we Little Witch?”
Wanda nodded her head. “Very hard.”
Pepper melted, as did every other adult.
Pietro grabbed Natasha’s hand and gave it a gentle pull. “We get candies now?”
Natasha nodded, “Let’s go get some candy.”
Steve followed slowly behind, as the twins ran to the first door. They knocked and took three steps back. The door opened, and the twin held out the pumpkins Rhodey had prepared. The twins weren’t ready for the outside world, so the Avengers made sure the kids were able to trick ‘r treat in the building. Each Avenger went to their own room, candy ready for the twins.
“Trick and treat,” both twins shouted, getting a laugh from Sam. He reached for the candy Natasha had bought and handed out, and placed it into the buckets.
“I love the costumes,” Sam said, rubbing the top of Pietro’s hair. The little boy shook it with a giggle.
“Thank you Uncle Sam,” he said, looking into his bucket.
“Thank you Uncle Sam,” Wanda said, her voice muffled under the mask.
“Next year, I want to see a mini Falcon,” he said, just before the two kids ran off.
Natasha reached over and grabbed Steve’s hand. He looked over and smiled.
Pietro slammed his fist against the next door. When it opened, he let out a growl and shouted, “Hulk Smash!”
Bruce beamed, crouching down. He offered Pietro his hand, who took it. “Hulk is really happy.”
“I like Hulk. He funny,” Pietro said, giving the scientist a toothy grin.
“Hulk likes you too,” he then leaned forward. “You’re his favorite.”
Pietro gasped, his eyes wide. He looked at Wanda, who was just watching. Wanda, who’s faceplate was up, was happy for her brother. Wanda took a step forward and opened her little bucket. “I like Hulk too.”
Bruce gave the youngest a fond smile. He crouched down and dropped some candy into Wanda’s pumpkin bucket. “He likes you too.”
Wanda and Pietro exchanged grins before rushing back to their guardians. Natasha winked at Bruce, who just beamed.
Steve and Natasha lead the children to the next house, where the archer stood. Clint leaned against the door frame, a small smirk on his face. “Baby Hulk and Iron Baby, greetings.”
“Hi Uncle Clint,” Wanda greeted, her voice muffled under her helmet mask.
Steve wrapped his arm around Natasha’s shoulder while the little girl raised her little pumpkin and her face mask disappeared.
“That’s so cool,” Clint commented, shoving candy into the pumpkin.
“How ‘bout me old man?” Pietro asked, a small frown on his face. Steve felt Natasha let out a snort. Clint rolled his eyes, but placed candy in Pietro’s pumpkin. The twins looked into the bucket, and then high-fived. They ran off, and Steve and Natasha walked behind them.
“Uncle Rhodey!” The twins exclaimed when they reached the next door. They both held out their buckets, beams on their faces.
“I see you like your pumpkins?” he asked, grabbing the candy and dropping them into the bucket.
“Yes! Thank you!” Wanda exclaimed under her helmet.
“Maybe, if your parents let you, we can all go flying?” Rhodey suggested, with an easy smile on his face.
The faceplate disappeared and Wanda looked at him with excitement in her eyes. She turned to Natasha. “Natty?”
The redhead glared at the colonel. She turned to Wanda and gave her a smile. “We’ll see.”
Wanda squealed, turning to Pietro, who was excited for her. Rhodey laughed as the kids ran to the next door. Steve raised his eyebrow.
“I would watch my back,” Natasha hissed out, and Rhodey crackled, moving into his room and closing the door.
Thor was waiting, his door opened. He had two pillow cases in each hand. “Ah, you are tricking or treating, which would you choose?”
Pietro and Wanda looked at each other. “Treatin’!”
Thor beamed, handing each kid a pillowcase full of candy. Natasha and Steve froze, seeing the candy.
“Thor! That’s a lot of candy!”
The Asgardian beamed. “It is human custom to give treats.”
“But that’s too much. They are going to get sick.”
“It’s ‘kay Natty,” Wanda said, looking up at the woman. “Piet and me won’t eat lots.”
Steve melted with how adorable she was. “You’ll share with Peter, Kate and Aunt Lena, yeah?”
Pietro pouted, but nodded. He gave Steve his pillow case, while Wanda gave hers to Natasha. With a last thank you, they kept moving.
The teenagers decided to hole up in Yelena’s room, and the twins knocked. They giggled when they saw that Yelena had bunny ears on top of her head. She looked unamused.
Kate and Peter were beaming next to her. “Happy halloween!” they shouted.
“Trick ‘r treat!” the twins shouted back.
“Have candy,” Peter said, shoving candy into their buckets.
“Why Aunt Lena sad?” Wanda asked, looking at her mother’s sister.
Yelena sighed. “I’m not sad, I’m annoyed.”
“Why?” Pietro asked, cocking his head to the side.
“Because my girlfriend is dumb.”
“Why?”
“Because she is childish.”
“Why?”
“Because she hit her head hard when small.”
“Why?”
“Okay,” Natasha cut in, putting her hand over the smirking Pietro’s mouth. Kate and Peter were laughing, and Yelena looked ready to throttle them.
Wanda watched everyone with wide, innocent eyes. She looked into her bucket and pulled out a Snickers bar. She placed it on Yelena’s hand. “Happy Hall’ween,” she said, smiling.
Yelena looked less annoyed, and just smiled at her niece. “You’re my favorite,” she responded, taking the candy.
Pietro gasped. “Spider-man,” he said, pulling out an exclusive candy car with the spider logo. Kate and Yelena turned to Peter. He blushed.
“They looked cool.”
“Nerd.”
“Children.”
Wanda and Pietro gave them a wave, moving on from the door. Natasha and Steve followed behind, the former rolling her eyes at her younger sister.
The two walked to the last door, Tony Stark’s bedroom. The door opened before they could knock.
“The kiddos are here!” Tony shouted to Pepper, who rushed to the door.
“Trick ‘r treat!” the twins exclaimed, their pumpkins in front of them.
Tony grabbed full sized chocolate bars and started to shove them into the buckets. Pepper turned to Natasha and Steve.
“Tony was so excited when he heard Wanda wanted to dress like him,” she said, turning to the three excited for the holiday.
“She loves him, I think he’s her favorite uncle,” Natasha answered, a fond smile on her face.
“We might not be able to get her out of the outfit by the end of the night,” Steve joked, grinning.
“Tony! I shoot too!” Wanda said, extending her hand and her magic escaping the repulsors.
“I Hulk Smash!” Pietro added, slamming his fists to the ground.
Tony stared at them, a grin on his face. He turned to Pepper and gave her a wink. She turned to the two. “Don’t tell anyone, but you’re my favorite avengers.”
The two kids squealed from excitement.
Wanda and Pietro both hugged Tony and Pepper before leaving back to their adopted parent’s room. Natasha and Pietro sat down as their parents started to give them their candy for the day, and put the rest away.
“Natty,” Wanda called out, her candy in her hand.
“Yeah?”
“Movies?”
Steve nodded. “We are going to order pizza, and we’ll all watch movies. Halloween movies.”
The two kids looked excited.
The Avengers, teens, and kids all sat in the living room, The Nightmare Before Christmas playing on the television show. Clint had gone home to take his own kids trick ‘r treating. Kate, Yelena, and Peter were sitting on the ground, popcorn in between them. Rhodey, Sam, and Bruce were on one couch, Tony and Pepper on another. Steve and Natasha were in the last one, with the twins in between them. Pietro had changed into his Hulk pajamas, and Wanda in her iron man ones.
“Natty,” Pietro called out, looking at the older widow.
“Yeah?”
“We like Hallo-ween,” he said, and Wanda nodded next to him, her mouth full of popcorn.
“We like halloween too,” Tony said from the other couch.
“I like costume Uncle Tony,” Wanda told him, giving him a toothy grin.
“Me too!” Pietro added, almost jumping on the couch.
“Do you have any idea what you want to be next year, bud?” Steve asked, and he watched the speedster look at everyone. He nodded, his eyes stopping at the god.
“And you Baby Bear?” Natasha asked, smiling at the girl.
Wanda nodded, staring at her adopted mother. “Yes, I wanna be widow. Like you.”
Natasha smiled, pulling Wanda back so she could lean against the widow. “I would be honored.”
“What’s this?!” Peter and Kate shouted, as the song started on the television. Pietro and Wanda became immersed with the film. The adults all watched as the twins enjoyed their first Halloween, excited to spend more firsts with them.
