Desperate for Sleep

Summary:

In the middle of the blackout, Buck is desperate for a few hours of sleep. Day 12 (late) of Whumptober 2023.

Prompt: “I haven’t slept in days but who’s counting?” | Insomnia

Notes:

Totally admitting that this came out of a night where I got no sleep myself, so…

Work Text:

The hardest part about trying to sleep at the station was the constant noise.

With every shift called in to be inside the building, it was loud and crowded, even when the different shifts were trying to keep the sound down and be respectful. Just too many people in one space. Noice was obviously going to bounce off walls.

Buck pulled his pillow over his head, trying to drown out the whispered chatter of two C-shift paramedics discussing their previous call. His assigned cot was unfortunately very close to the bay, leading him to wake with every alarm and movement around the fire trucks and ambulance, regardless of whether his shift was currently running point.

He knew he needed real rest. Three days in, he was desperate for just an hour long nap somewhere quiet. If he could get away with it, he’d just go crash in his jeep… But that was parked three blocks away due to the influx of cars in the lot.

Ten minutes of desperately trying to convince the sheep in his head to start hopping so he could count them, he gave up again. Sleep would probably be elusive until the end of the black out, or until he could crash somewhere calm.

“Buck.”

Bobby’s voice had him pulling the pillow off of his head, almost like a child caught unintentionally doing something wrong.

His captain held out a hand and pulled him up. “Crash on my cot in my office for a couple of hours. I’ll wake you when we need you. I have a task assigned with you in mind, but it can wait a little bit longer, when you’re not swaying on your feet.”

Buck nodded wordlessly and slowly meandered his way to Bobby’s office. He replaced Bobby’s pillow with his own, collapsed onto the cot with a near silent groan, and almost immediately fell right into darkness.
