Chapter 1: A Change of Plans

Chapter Text

Wakko and Dot stood outside the door to Yakko’s room, dressed up for his next concert. Yakko always took his siblings along to his concerts; they were the Warner siblings, and they wanted to stick together. Besides, if Yakko was performing, then who would look after the water tower? Wakko’s tail wagged rapidly.

“Come on, Yakko,” he said, “open up!”

“I’m almost ready, baby bro!” Yakko replied.

Dot looked at Wakko’s wagging tail and smirked.

“You know, Yakko,” Dot began, “if you don’t come out soon, Wakko’s tail might go so fast that he’ll fly off into outer space, and you’ll never see him again!”

“Alright, alright!” Yakko said with a giggle.

Yakko opened the door and showed off his outfit to his siblings. He wore a purple vest over a white tank top and a pair of darker purple shorts with a belt like the one he wore with his slacks. He had a headband that was the same color as his shorts wrapped around his forehead, and he still wore his signature gloves on his hands. He gestured to himself with a smile.

“Whaddya guys think?” Yakko asked.

Wakko’s eyes sparkled, and his jaw dropped. He slowly lifted his hand and pointed at Yakko.

“Whoa,” Wakko said.

“Ya like it?” Yakko asked.

“Like it?” Wakko replied, “Yakko, you look awesome! I love it!”

“Thanks, Wakko. What do you think, Dot?”

“You look tough,” Dot began, “at least, that’s what I would say if your color of choice wasn’t purple.”

Wakko giggled, while Yakko rolled his eyes with a smirk.

“Hey, not my fault that Cleff and Winona can’t choose outfits that aren’t all black for the life of ‘em,” Yakko explained, “and besides, I’m the lead singer! Standing out’s pretty much in the job description, and if I’m gonna stand out, I’m gonna do it in my best color.”

“Alright, alright,” Dot replied, “you really do look good, Yakko.”

“Thanks sis,” Yakko said.

“Alright,” Wakko began, “Yakko, do you have everything you need for the show?”

“I sure do!” Yakko exclaimed.

“You got your phone?”

“Check!” Yakko pulled out his smartphone.

“Is your setlist on it?” Dot asked.

“Right here!” Yakko showed his siblings the setlist for the concert.

“Got a water bottle?” Wakko asked.

“Oh, I got plenty!” Yakko put his phone back and pulled several bottles of water out of hammerspace.

“How many pairs of drumsticks do you have?” Dot asked.

“As many as I need!” Yakko exclaimed as he put the water bottles back in hammerspace and pulled three pairs of drumsticks out.

“Where are your lucky ones?”

“They’re in my coat.” Yakko pointed backwards to a dining room chair. His favorite coat was over it, and Dot could see a pair of white drumsticks sticking out of it.

“Is there a drum set where you’re performing?” Wakko asked.

“No, but I already have my drums packed up and ready to go,” Yakko said.

“And now, the most important part,” Dot began.

“What could that be?” Yakko asked.

Suddenly, Yakko saw Wakko and Dot rapidly approaching him. Yakko put the drumsticks back in hammerspace before opening his arms out for them. Dot jumped into Yakko’s arms, while Wakko, now much bigger than he used to be, stood beside Yakko and hugged him, his tongue hanging out of his mouth.

“Us!” Wakko and Dot exclaimed.

Yakko giggled, and Wakko and Dot laughed alongside him. However, Yakko’s laugh didn’t sound as cheery and fun as it normally did. It felt forced and unsure. Dot and Wakko stopped laughing, but Yakko continued to force his laugh.

“What’s up with that laugh?” Dot asked.

“Oh, my laugh?” Yakko said.

“Yeah,” Dot replied.

“It doesn’t sound right,” Wakko added.

“Well,” Yakko began, “sibs, there’s something I need to tell you.”

Dot jumped out of Yakko’s arms and looked up at him. Yakko sighed and scratched the back of his head.

“You know, I really should’ve told you sooner,” Yakko said.

“Told us what?” Dot asked.

“Sibs... you can’t come to the concert,” Yakko explained.

“What?!” Wakko said.

“I’m really sorry, Wakko,” Yakko replied, “I know that our shows mean a lot to you.”

“Why can’t we come?” Dot asked.

“The venue won’t allow anyone under a certain age,” Yakko explained, “and unfortunately, I’m the only one of us over that age.”

“That hasn’t stopped us from going places before!”

“I know, sis. I tried, I really did, but the people in charge just wouldn’t budge. Uncle Louis even offered to pay the venue to let you guys in, but they wouldn’t take the money.”

“Aww, but Yakko, you’re... Yakko! Please don’t tell me your gift for gab didn’t work at all!”

Dot gave Yakko her best puppy eyes, but Yakko only closed his eyes and shook his head no.

“I could’ve gone on for days, but they wouldn’t let me,” Yakko explained, “if I was a solo artist, I would’ve cancelled, but I didn’t want to hurt Cleff and Winona.”

Wakko and Dot got on their knees and pulled on Yakko’s shorts.

“We gotta stick together, Yakko!” Wakko pled.

“Sneak us in, Yakko! Pretty please with a cherry on top?” Dot begged.

“Uhhhh, I don’t think security would like that very much,” Yakko said.

Dot and Wakko let go of Yakko’s shorts and sighed. Yakko pulled his siblings in for a tight hug.

“I’m so sorry, guys,” he said, “I wish I could’ve taken you along...”

“Well, if you can’t, then I guess it’s alright,” Dot replied.

Yakko let go of Wakko and Dot, and suddenly, he gasped.

“What’s up, Yakko?” Wakko asked.

“I almost forgot!” Yakko said.

“You almost forgot what?” Dot replied.

“Wakko, I need to talk to you,” Yakko explained.

“Wait, you need to talk to me?” Wakko gestured to himself.

“Yep,” Yakko replied.

“Alone?”

“Alone.”

“What about?”

“Can’t say out here. Come to my room.”

Yakko walked into his room, and Wakko gulped. What was so important that Yakko needed to tell him alone? Why couldn’t Dot hear it? Dot crossed her arms and looked up at Wakko.

“What are you waiting for?” Dot asked.

“This is weird,” Wakko said.

“I agree,” Dot began, “but you can’t leave Yakko waiting. Or else he’s just gonna reach his arm out and pull you into his room. I’d recommend just going in there.”

“If you say so.”

With that, Wakko walked into Yakko’s room, expecting nothing but the worst.
