Work Text:

Phoenix was tired. His whole week has been nothing but investigating a stubborn case, dealing with idiot detectives, and trying not to scream during court recess. Every single time he managed to prepare a good argument, it was all lost the second he entered the courtroom. Why? Because of that goddamn genius, unconventionally attractive, silver-haired prosecutor. He tried everything. He even walked into court one day wearing extra-tinted sunglasses so that he wouldn’t see him! It worked for the first few minutes as he prepared things, till he heard that smooth slightly accented voice that made his heart swell again.

Phoenix didn’t know how much more of this he could take. The case was almost closed, and odds of success for his client were looking slim. Maya encouraged him as much as she could, even summoned Mia for a moment. He simply shook his head and sighed, resigning himself to his office for a while. Maybe if he wrote a script? Maybe if he had the judge speak to him through headphones so he wouldn’t have to hear that wonderfully sexy voice the prosecutor was gifted with? Obviously, this proved to be more of a dilemma than any other case.

They should’ve taught him in law-school how to avoid being attracted to the other side. He put his head in his hands and leaned on the metal of the cheap old desk. The light from the computer screen illuminated the dark office, teasing him with the evidence of his client's innocence that he just couldn’t find the words to say out loud. He was sick of this. He shut down the computer, grabbed his things, and just decided to go home for the night.

The walk back was distracting. Why did that man have to fill every waking thought he had? This was getting frustrating. He walked inside his home, plopping his belongings on the floor and dragging his feet to the kitchen to cook something at least somewhat decent. He measured ingredients, he washed dishes, he put things in the oven, yet the entire time he was still distracted. ‘That bastard..’ Phoenix thought. How dare he take his entire headspace, rent free, for no reason?!

But as he heard the front door click open, and a bag being hung up, he realized he couldn’t really stay angry. Not for long at least. Because the second that he prepared a speech to give to him and opened his mouth to say it, he saw maroon sleeves wrap around his waist and hug him. No, he couldn’t stay mad. Nor could he blame him for occupying his thoughts all day. Instead, he smiled and turned around in his husband's arms, leaning in for a kiss.

“Welcome home, Miles.” He finally managed to say. His lover smiled at him, relaying a few stories of the day while Phoenix finished up cooking. But, little to Phoenix’s knowledge, he got exactly the payback he wanted. Because the next day in court, as a final ‘Objection!’ was yelled, Miles was simply too distracted by a certain spiky haired defense to bring up his last argument.

“You distract me too much, you know.” Miles had spoken that night in bed.

“Oh really? What a shame.” Was the only response Phoenix could give.
