When Nene asked Rui out to the movies, he immediately went “Oh, is this the campaign again about the height difference? Something like “The bigger the height difference between you and the person you bring, the bigger the discount”, right?”
“Um… Yeah.” Nene said.
The thing was; They weren’t going to do that campaign again for another few months. Nene just needed some sort of excuse to bring Rui out to the movies again. She didn’t want it to seem like a… date… because it isn’t, okay? “ It… It isn’t a date…” Nene said under her breath, hoping Rui didn’t pick up on it. “Anyways… We should get going. It starts in thirty minutes and we still haven’t gotten the snacks yet!” She rushed Rui and herself just so she could stop thinking about… dates.
She grabbed his hand and led him over to the concessions booth, falling in line. “Uh… Do you want something?” She looked back at him, not noticing she was still holding his hand.
“Well… No, not really. Whatever you want.” He smiled.
“R-Right…”
When it was finally their turn in line, Nene’s brain had already broken long before, so all she got was butter popcorn and two sodas. “Are you sure you don’t want anything else?” Rui asked, but it was already too late to get anything else, they were already out of the line and the movie was starting in a few minutes.
“Let’s just go…” Nene sighed, holding the popcorn while Rui held the sodas. “Wait, shoot. The tickets!” Nene scrambled over to the ticket booth, nearly dropping some popcorn as she quickly bought two tickets.
Rui raised an eyebrow. “I thought you needed me for the campaign?”
“Oh… um…” Nene’s mind blanked. “They already saw me with you a while ago, so… they uh… already applied the discount.” She was practically grasping at straws.
“Ah… Right.” Rui nodded, still skeptical. “The movie’s going to start soon, come on.”
Rui went ahead as Nene stood there, sighing a breath of relief as she felt her face heat up.
…This was great. Just great.

Rui and Nene make it to their seats the second the movie starts. Rui places the sodas down on the cupholders as Nene holds the popcorn close to her.
Minutes pass and the two stay silent as they watch the movie. Still, there were a few glances between them from time to time, which sent Nene’s heart fluttering, but… that was kind of it. The two tried to keep some sort of distance from each other.
Rui reached for the popcorn and ended up bumping their shoulders together. Thankfully, the theater was dark enough that Rui couldn’t see how red Nene’s face was. He popped some popcorn into his mouth and reached for more, leaning in since a lot of the popcorn had already been eaten, so he had to reach into the bottom… but then noticed how Nene’s eyes widened, glued to the screen. Confused, he also looked over at the movie and saw the main character and the love interest… kissing and making out passionately in her bedroom.
Now both of their faces were alight.
Rui turned his head to stop looking at that , but Nene did the same, so now both of their faces were so close together. Close enough to…
Nene quickly coughed and took her soda to sip as Rui backed away into his seat, both of them now wanting to disappear from the world.
The energy around the two of them quickly became awkward as the kiss scene seemed like it would go on for a couple more minutes.
This couldn’t get any worse…

Once the credits began to roll, Nene shot up with her empty popcorn bucket. “L-Let’s go! It’s getting late!”
Rui coughed awkwardly as he stood up in turn. “Right…”
The two walked out of the theater, completely changed.
There was… something different in the air now. “That was… a movie,” Rui said and giggled, trying to lighten the mood.
They wander aimlessly around the street, now realizing how late it actually got. Nene fidgeted with her hands after she threw away the popcorn container in a nearby trash can as the two walked, a soft and cool breeze moving past the two.
As they reached Kamiyama Street, Nene mustered up the courage to speak, her voice tiny and nearly a whisper. “I… I hope you liked the movie… and that it wasn’t, you know, too embarrassing for you…”
Rui glanced over at her, a soft smile tugging at his lips. “It’s fine. I’ve seen… worse. That kiss scene was a bit longer than needed, though…”
At the mere mention of that scene, Nene’s face shot up in crimson red. “Right… Um… Our houses are coming up… Are your parents home?” She deflected the conversation elsewhere.
“Ah… no. If it’s okay with you, could I stay over at yours for a bit?”
She looked away to hide her worsening blush. “Sure…” Rui? In her house after all of… that ? Nene wanted to dig a hole and bury herself in there for the rest of her life at this rate.
The two reached Nene’s house, and she fumbled to get her keys, but eventually, the door was unlocked. Rui instantly went for the couch and sat down, his eyes tracing the wallpaper’s design, counting each individual line had helped calm his racing heart somehow.
Nene closed and locked the door behind her, standing next to Rui. “I’m… I’m sorry for the movie… I didn’t mean to make things so… awkward.”
Rui stopped whatever he was doing and looked over at Nene both of their eyes shining as they looked at each other. “There’s nothing to be sorry for!” He gave her a reassuring smile. “I had a good time.”
Despite her heart acting erratically, Nene somehow found the courage to stammer out “Hey… Do you wanna sleepover? L-Like usual?”
Rui bit his bottom lip to prevent himself from blushing, and replied with “Sure.”

Nene decided to get settled in for the night, the two relaxing on her bed, blanket on Nene despite her fighting with Rui to put it over him instead. But, of course, Rui won. She faced the wall, a calm silence filling the room.
She hears his body shift a little, and realizes… This is exactly how the kiss scene in that movie they just watched played out! She covered her mouth in shock, her pupils widening. How was she supposed to sleep like this?!
Nene shifted her body to face her back to the wall, and when she did, she was suddenly face-to-face with Rui, their noses touching. Just like what happened in the theater, except… they were both unable to move as they looked into each other’s eyes.
It felt as if time had stood still, that the world contained only the two of them, the surroundings slowly fading away. Right now, it was only Rui and Nene, Nene and Rui, right here, right now.
She could hear his soft breathing as she saw him smile gently. “Do you… want to…?” He asked. He stopped himself from talking further, but it was pretty obvious what he asking.
All Nene could produce was a single nod, and Rui responded back by putting his hand behind her head as his arm brushed her neck and shoulder and slowly brought her close until… their lips met, eyes closed, sparks flying. It felt magical, surreal as if nothing else had existed in the world besides the two of them, as if all her problems had vanished… it was perfect. Everything was perfect right now. The kiss was perfect.
After what felt like hours, which realistically was a few seconds, they both pulled away.
They both managed to create their own first kiss scene as if they were both in their own romantic comedy movie.
And it felt just like the movies did. How fiction depicted it to be, to feel… Nene just had her first kiss with Rui, and it was nothing short of magical.
She held Rui close to her, afraid that this would all end if she let him go. She wanted to hold onto him and this feeling as long as she could.
He wrapped his arms around her neck and held the back of her head gently as he gave her one final goodnight kiss on the forehead.
“I’ll see you in the morning.” He whispered in her ear.
They both cuddle in her bed as the screen slowly fades to black, and white, bold letters fill the screen.
