Nene finds herself in a meadow—flowers and grass brushing against her legs as a cool, delicate breeze resonates throughout the area. She notices that her hair flows with the wind, as well as the white sundress she has on.
She looks around, confused at first, but begins to settle into her environment. She sits down on the ground as she feels the cool, relaxing air and grass caress her skin. She hugs her knees close and watches the sky—for some reason, the sun doesn’t feel blinding.
Everything feels right. Perfect. But, Nene doesn’t know how she got here, or why she’s wearing this dress, but neither is she questioning it.
Settling in, she watches as clouds pass and birds hum. She stays in her spot, away from all that was wrong, in eternal perfection. If Heaven was real; then she was there.
And then…
She sees Rui in the distance.
His back is turned to her, his hair sways in the wind, standing there peacefully and wearing a blue-and-white button-up flannel over sand-colored cargo pants.
For some reason, Nene feels herself get up and approach him. She doesn’t feel in control of her own body and movement, but she still doesn’t question it. She lets everything happen.
“Rui…?” She says under her breath as she stands right behind him, tapping him gently on the shoulder. He turns and looks at her with a gentle smile than his usual teasing smirk. “What’re you doing here?” She looks back into his eyes with a certain warmth in her expression—and a certain warmth in her heart.
“Ah, Nene! I was waiting for you. Please, join me.” He guides her over to a picnic blanket set up with a basket and some orange juice boxes that Nene swore weren’t there until he pointed it out. Rui sits down and prompts Nene to sit next to him.
“You were…?” Nene feels her face heat up as she sits next to him, scooting close to him til their shoulders are touching.
“Mhm. I knew you’d get here… because… well, I have something to tell you.”
Nene’s heart skips a beat, and so does the environment around her. Lagging, but quickly returning back to normal.
“What is it?” She asks but already knows the answer as she feels the both of them get closer and closer together, Rui wrapping his arms around her to bring her in.
“I think I love you.” He says, stopping time and voiding the surroundings with just five simple words.
Nene needs no further words exchanged—the knowing looks between them speak more than language can say, more than words.
She leans in;
He leans in too—
And they kiss.
When she retracts, she feels a weird knowing sensation down in her stomach, like an infinitely expanding void that had just formed in her.
Out of desperation, she holds his hand tight and looks into his eyes, scared she might lose everything. “You’ll remember all of this, right? Please, please, please tell me you’ll remember this…”
“Nene, of course, I will.”
“Please… You’ll remember this, right???”
“I promise, Nene.” He says reassuringly with a faint smile but falters as if he knows he won’t.
At least the real Rui won’t.
Then, suddenly, the breeze was gone, the soft picnic blanket, Rui’s gentle touch, and so was everything else as it faded to white.

Nene finds herself in her bed, her bedsheets messy and on the floor. Dazed, and a little confused, she sits up and looks around and finds no sign of Rui or the meadow she was just in a moment ago. It took her a few beats to realize what had just happened.
Everything before was just a dream.
She puts her hand over her heart and feels it beating erratically. “What…” She calms herself down as her eyes flick around the room, still a little hazy. She puts a finger on her lips trying to find that sweet sensation of his lips on hers, racking her brain, trying to remember the words he whispered in her ear.
Memories blur and become conjugated as she faintly tries to recall her dream.
Then, she realizes.
She just dreamed about Rui kissing and confessing to her.
Rui.
Rui Kamishiro.
Her childhood friend.
She jumps out of bed at the realization. “What the fuck?!” She screamed out loud and covered her mouth instantly.
Nene didn’t want to believe it. Nene didn’t even want to remember it. People usually forget dreams a few seconds after they wake up, right? Then in the world does Nene remember practically everything so clearly as if it actually happened?!
She slightly panics as she paces around her room, biting on her thumbnail. What does that dream mean? Is she actually in love with him? Why did that kiss feel so good??? Her thoughts jumble and mess with her mind. It feels so confusing to her, yet it feels… right? And…does he actually remember…? Nene shakes her head and tries to think this out thoroughly.
But… This wasn’t the first time she had felt something like this for Rui. Nene can’t deny that, no matter how many times she tries to move on and forget about it, she can never escape that feeling. It always reappeared, even at the most random times.
She doesn’t even want to call it “love”.
Nene sighs and falls back onto her bed, staring at the ceiling. After a bit, she gets up and opens her window to look at Rui’s bedroom window, just a few feet away from hers. She sees his figure get up from bed and rub his eyes awake, stumbling out of bed as he immediately goes to his window and waves back at her, a little rugged since he had just woken up.
He pulls out his phone and seems like he’s… typing something?
Nene feels her phone vibrate in her pocket and goes to check the notification.
RUI
Did you have a weird dream too?
