Work Text:
Quinni and Darren were constantly passing each other notes in class.
Initially, when they did this, teachers would intercept them, usually finding either lame gossip or a simple question like 'What are you eating for lunch?'. Eventually, though, their teachers realized they were helpless to actually stop it and decided it wasn't worth their attention anymore.
The notes especially came in handy whenever Quinni wasn't speaking, as writing was her preferred way to communicate when she couldn't do so verbally. Texting always felt too indirect and she didn't like how those text-to-speech apps always made her tone come across like a robot. Handwritten notes felt personal and she could always try to convey tone with her facial expressions (or a tone indicator if all else fails) if needed.
When Darren got the SOS message after Quinni went on her date with Sasha, they immediately knew something was wrong. As supportive as they had tried to be, they had a feeling that Sasha just wouldn't be the one, ever since they witnessed the pair's conversation following their first date.
When they arrived, Quinni was curled against her wall with her frog. They sat with her for a while, not commenting on the scattered objects and messy hair that made it clear she'd had a meltdown when she'd gotten back home.
After Quinni had calmed down all the way, she grabbed a notepad and pen from her nightstand and began writing something. Darren didn't say anything, just patiently waiting for her to write out whatever she needed to.
'I don't think things are going to work out with Sasha'
"Figures" Darren muttered. "Just as well, though. You were too good for her anyways" they added. Quinni smiled weakly. "Want me to help you clean up a bit?" A small nod. "Alright then"
