Margot watched on as Mikayla tried to escape. Two of her brothers were blocking her path and soon enough, the human girl realized that she was surrounded by the people she always believed was her family.
She wiped her teary and snotty face on her long sleeve, sniffling sadly. She looked up at the wolf-parents and Margot, who stayed by their side to just follow their lead.
She had been confused as to why she had to hunt down her best friend and sister, but her mother had explained everything to her. Humans were vile and horrible and had kept the old-world animals under slavery for hundreds of years.
Mikayla would eventually turn out just like them. Although Margot had a hard time believing that, she wanted to be able to trust her family. Still, it hurt to see Mikayla so scared and hurt.
The human girl turned to Margot, hoping to get some sort of response out of her.
"B-but you said we were a pack!" Mikayla desperately reminded her friend.
Margot remembered saying that. She had believed it back then. Now she didn't know what to believe. She was stuck in a dilemma. Her heart was telling her to go with Mikayla. To protect her and be the friend she deserved. But her brain knew what her family would do to her if she disobeyed them. She was just a kid. She would never be able to take them down, not even with Mikayla's help. She didn't want to disappoint her family and make them angry. She hated when people were mad at her.
Looking up at her mother for guidance, the older wolf just gestured towards the human child. She wanted Margot to say what she had been taught. What she had been trying to forget ever since she and Mikayla became friends.
But there was no turning back. They were already on the battlefield and her parents expected her to do what she was told. What she was supposed to do as a predator.
And then Margot said it.
