I love the innocence and awkwardness of the beginning of the list, especially
Learning to masturbate quickly and quietly and keep his hands, if not his eyes, to himself.
And the quick development of moral instability with
Lying—so much lying, he cannot fathom why he is still so awkward at it—as well as betraying his own kind. Matchmaking. Murder.
Then, the repetition and shift from the "shivering, hot" to the
cooling, sour-smelling deadweight of infinitely precious flesh and bone and heart that is Arthur Pendragon
makes me feel so uncomfortable with time and mortality. So angry at the limitations of flesh. But then you redeem physicality by giving us Arthur again and
dragging Arthur down into the reeds, feeling as if [we] might start bursting out all over in catkins.
I love being Merlin, renewed; like the hope that the cycles of nature are a promise of wishes fulfilled.
