The Long Overdue Gift

Work Text:

The last thing they wanted was rain… Conspicuously, it rained heavily the exact moment they left the store. Almost like there was a scenario waiting for them. Then again, nothing is exactly an accident in this world. If anyone knew better than whatever entities are really out there, it was Sunny.

Before then, his partners had been picking artist stuff up for Sunny. Pencils, erasers, watercolor, canvas and the things in the list he wrote in. The stuff he was asking for was kind of more expensive than planned, but Basil’s pool of money made it possible for him to get what he wanted.

As for the art piece he was trying to make? He kept it a secret from them because it was going to be a surprise. Because apparently he got more comfortable keeping secrets on top of the past several dozen lies he had when he was still trying to get his shit together back then. Guess what scares you makes you stronger.

“Fuck, it’s raining and it’s not just drops! Where do we go now?” Aubrey complained and asked her boyfriends.

“How about we stay in the shop first?” Basil reasoned to her. “I know we want to go home – but we need to check if we forgot anything. Sunny agreed with what Basil said and added to his boyfriend’s words. Maybe we… have the rain go away a bit at the same time and it’ll be easier to walk outside?” They were the nerdy dynamic duo that Aubrey relied on for education-related stuff and for the usual things that she needed their help with.

“You guys are right. Welp. Take a crack at it Sun and Bagel.” She told them to check everything and helped look at stuff alongside her boyfriends.

“…my name’s Basil, not Bagel…” During the inspection, Basil had narrowed his eyes at Aubrey with disapproval while checking all the stuff they bought in the bags. His hands were so preoccupied with getting the stuff out yet he was able to focus on that one bit.

“I was just fucking with you.” Aubrey said and chuckled. “Honestly though, Bagel sounds cute on you. So I will be using that from now on.” She smugly grinned at him. Basil huffed at that statement with a red face.

“Don’t blame me, you’re just that cute.” argued Aubrey. For Basil himself, “Bagel” does sound cute on him. He’ll give it a pass. Especially when it’s coming from Sunny or Aubrey.

It took longer than they thought, yet they didn’t mind. Sunny wanted to make his best art pieces with these art supplies. He went out a bit further into the city because he couldn’t find anything that was abject to his lofty standards.

While they checked all the stuff together, the store owner walked straight up to them sitting on the waiting chairs. Well. They were expecting to get kicked out from the store now considering they’ve been waiting there for 20 minutes. And the rain still hasn’t stopped yet.

“Do you three need umbrellas?” Luckily, the owner had not done anything. He probably saw all that and the rain. As much of a relief it is to be helped, it did catch their guards off a bit. Going around the city Sunny moved in (eventually Aubrey and Basil shared the apartment with him too at a certain point) wasn’t as touch and go as a normal person would think.

There were a few situations where they all were put in considerable danger, but managed to claw out of because of their due diligence from Sunny & Basil being the brains and because of their self-defense skills, most of that brawn coming from Aubrey. They had helped each other adapt to the environments they’ve been in.

“Yes, we do need like, three. Totally forgot ours from home. Wait. Do we have to return this to you after we’re done?” Aubrey answered the man’s question.

“Ah… no. you don’t need to. I suppose though, you can still return them to me. Good luck traveling, muses.”

“Oh… Thank you Mr. Shop Owner. I guess.” Aubrey took the three umbrellas and shared two of them with her boyfriends. She was particularly gentle with the boyfriends she had. The favorite part about them is that she can service them at will. Making them feel special. Feel loved. Perhaps it was about being able to comfort her boyfriends, or maybe it’s because she always felt motherly towards them.

She made sure to give them pats. They seemed content with her gestures of affection for now. Sunny had to admit, he loved her beyond just a “childhood crush”. She always showed concern to him. If she didn’t ask for a reunion on that swing… maybe he would have opened himself up less.

And Basil… well, let’s just say Aubrey had apologized to him so much he actually stopped her from doing it further. He loved her so much to the point where they got really concerned with each other sometimes.

Eventually they walked out with bags full of art supplies on their own dominant hands. Sunny and Basil were left handed, but their girlfriend was right handed. They were walking on the wet sidewalks and chatting with each other.

“Hey Sun, why did that guy just call us muses?” Aubrey asked about what the shop owner said when they were still in the shop. “You don’t really have to answer it, but I think you love these questions!”

“I don’t know… I guess it’s what he… calls his customers? Though... we could see it in another way? Like… we inspire each other… Honestly? I-I see it…” Sunny sheepishly chuckled but inside his mind, he wanted to kick himself for suggesting such cheesy things. Yet he was so openly honest about it to his own love partners that it was pointless to have any other feelings.

“When you put it that way I think it’s kind of beautiful Sunny… you always know your way around artistry. Even back then I thought you were the most creative out of us three but clearly you must be thinking otherwise, Sunny… I don’t think it’s wrong for me to still think that way though!” Basil praised him and it left Sunny with a blush. Everything he thought of as cheesy worked with this blonde guy every time and it made him feel kind of... relieved?

Now he wanted to compliment Basil… not because he is obligated to, but because he truly wants the best for Basil, and motivation is just a little step to achieving it. And he just really admired Basil for who he is. It didn’t really matter much at all. “T-thank you Basil… you’re so kind to me. But I… think you’re just as creative as me too…” The same blush hit Basil’s face. He liked how pretty Basil looked with the blush.

“Aww… look at my boys flaring up.” Aubrey nudged her boyfriends smugly just a little bit. Before they could bite back, it seemed like they have now come across a bus stop.

“T-This is going to bring us home, I think.” Sunny decided that they wait out for the bus. The trio filled up half the seating of the stop.

Aubrey got the bright idea… to kiss her boyfriends in the bus stop. Even if this was a public place.

They were sitting. It was the perfect setting specifically given to them. The sounds of rain hitting the surfaces of the sidewalks was certainly soothing.

This was the actual first time they kissed together. She was confident enough to do it, but it never really materialized because her boyfriends kept being busy and nervous. Every time she tried to start a kiss, something would always halt it. Whether it was Basil’s reluctance, Sunny’s “running away” tendencies or outside factors out of her control.

Half a year had passed away since they had feelings for each other and affirmed everything. The cuddles and hugs were nice, but what would be nicer is that they finally kissed each other. As a celebration of their relationship. As a treat to her boyfriends.

She wanted to be straightforward with kissing them now.

“Basil… Sunny… um… are you ready?”

Basil was baffled. “What do you mean ready-” His words were cut off before he could say anything further.

“I… wanted to kiss you guys here. I know. Even after all the failed attempts. It seems silly of me to not have done it much, much earlier. But… I want to know if you guys would be comfortable with it. I don’t want to hurt you guys now.”

“Yes.” Sunny and Basil told her quietly in unison.

“Alright… let me take a breather.”

Aubrey stopped sitting and they decided to get up with her too. She pulled them into intimate distance, embracing her boys.

“I’ve been dying…” She was unaware of the tears building up in her eyes. “To give you boys a gift. You guys deserved this one so much… and yet I couldn’t give it.”

It looked like the atmosphere around them became far more somber than it should have been. They were just shopping for art supplies a while ago. It devolved into something sad.

She was so caught up with the sudden flurry of negative emotions she had. “Maybe it was just my fault that it never happened. Maybe God thinks I’m such a shit person and I don’t deserve anything good-”

“…Aubrey…” It hurt for Sunny to see her cry. And he thinks that he cried along too. “…It’s… not your fault… okay? We… were just so shy back then. I don’t think it’s very fair... to berate yourself for that… We would have not kissed anyway… and if you want to do it now… please do it.” His vision blurred off the tears he had. He could see Basil crying too, and nodding to his words.

It took every part of his body to muster the courage he had, but he actually initiated the kiss on her first. He held her face in his hands… she was a tad taller than him and his boyfriend. Sunny’s lips now touched her left cheek, and he did a kiss. Slow and gentle. Passionate. It lasted only seconds for her, but it felt so loving and so long.

“Sunny… that’s so… good. I think… it was worth the wait… thanks for caring about me, dork. I’m glad I put faith in you ever since we were kids. I love you Sunny...” It was tradition to call her boyfriends dorks once a month, but honestly, she cared more about what Sunny just did. Her pain… went away with his kiss.

“… no… problem… I love you too... Aubrey...” Sunny responded. They smiled at each other.

“Wait… don’t forget about Basil too.” Right.

The blonde boy had been hugging them both tight and smiling. “I’m very happy… for you guys… Would you guys mind if I ask for-”

“No need to ask… just watch me and Sunny.” Aubrey affectionately told Basil.

“...let me kiss you too Basil…” Sunny followed up afterwards.

Basil shuddered at the prospect of getting kissed by both of them, but this was a polyamory relationship after all. Nobody would leave each other here… and he knows it by heart.

She curved her body down a bit so that she was at Basil’s height. Sunny didn’t need to do that since they were practically the same height. The boyfriends would always joke about each other’s heights.

Before they were about to go in for the double kiss, Basil panicked. “W-wait… let me talk.” Sunny and Aubrey made sure to pat him on his back to comfort him before talking.

“I-I don’t think I really deserve this-” he frowned. He cried. He felt weak in front of them.

“...but why?” Sunny whispered to him.

“I hurt you guys so much… Sunny… I tried to help you and e-everything went bad. Aubrey… you k-know I didn’t speak up. I… lied about everything... I… deserved every bit of hurt and bullying everyone did to me.” Basil’s body shook and he whimpered while talking. His mind was back to the days of the incident.

Aubrey felt a desire to protect and defend him. “Basil… there was nothing you could have done more, you hear me? It’s already over. I’m over that shit. So is Sunny. Don’t start blaming yourself. I’m here, and he’s here for you too. So stop treating yourself like garbage. We love you. Come on.”

“...what you did to us in the past... doesn’t matter now Basil… please forgive yourself…” Sunny pleaded the poor guy. “… allow yourself… some happiness… I know you’re tired…” Basil was his damn best friend before. How can he just stand there and let Basil degrade himself into pieces? Sunny loved him so much. He hated it when Basil would degrade himself.

Eventually Basil gave in. “I’m sorry for having these thoughts… I just... It’s okay. You guys can kiss me now.” Their talk gave him reassurance and he felt protected by having them around. He did still sob though.

When their lips hit his cheek, it was a level of intimacy he never felt before. He could feel his mental scars healing. They weren’t fully healed but the way that they pecked him… was otherworldly. They do really care a lot about him.

It felt like they both poured all the love that they gathered all through out the years reserved just for his heart. He cried happy tears. He could give less of a shit of what anyone thought about him right now. He wanted… No. He needed this.

“Do you feel a lot better now, flowerboy? We love you.” Aubrey asked him.

“Y-yes… I… do… I love you guys...” Sunny and Aubrey liked the sound of that answer. It made them actually cry happy tears. They allowed him sometime to process their kisses.

“...you’re precious Basil… I will not leave you… for anyone else.” Sunny caressed Basil’s face, hair, everything.

“Thank you…” he hugged them even tighter than he did when he saw Aubrey and Sunny kissing each other.

“Wait… let me…” Basil quickly kissed them back. His lips were nice and warm on their cheeks. He also managed to keep the kisses long and intimate.

“Fuck you’re so good too Basil…” Aubrey was taken aback on how gentle Basil’s kiss was. “I see why you treat your plants the way you just did me.” They all chuckled.

“Wow... you're nice Basil.” Sunny felt that peck he just had from Basil… was amazing. It was nice that Basil wasn’t uncomfortable about kissing boys at all.

“Thank you guys…” Basil’s trademark sweet smile adorned his face. They were happy seeing him like this. In fact, they rewarded him with pats.

“Let’s just cuddle. I honestly don’t give a fuck about missing the buses anymore. I wanna just stay here with all of us. Together.” Aubrey cuddled them on the bus stop seat while the rain still went on.

Their hearts were now filled up with pieces of each other’s longing feelings. A chapter in their lives finally closed for good. For once, the gift was finally given to them. Their first kiss came true.

Kind of basic of me to use their past as a reference point for the angst but hey :)
