Instead, he tries on an easy smile. Leans on his palm again, pretends like the answer will be funny to him.

Like it doesn’t matter. What a lie.
Suguru’s hands pause at whatever truth (or lie) that may (or may not) be behind that easy smile. He lowers his bowl down to give Satoru a long, contemplative look. “Are we best friends?”
Satoru stares back, hooked on the edge of the answer like a fish on a line.
