Work Header

I Won't Change You

Summary:

Will and Connor met in Riyadh and they both start in med as both the Chief of the ED and Cardiothoracic and show how they earned the tites of being Chief.

A few things will be different from the show and certain characters are going to be ending up with different people.

Notes:

Had this idea for awhile and I honestly think Will should have been considered for the position of chief in season 6 so here a different take on it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Chicago 2015 Rhodes Apartment.

Will was the first to wake up and he took a moment to look at his boyfriend who was fast asleep and looked absolutely gorgeous.

Will had met his boyfriend Connor Rhodes 3 years ago when he and Connor were in Guadalajara and Riyadh.

At first the pair did not get on as they were always arguing and clashing but when a child needed medical attention and Connor was struggling to help the child it was Will who diagnosed him and with the red heads help Connor was able to treat the patient and from that moment Will and Connor worked well together and one night Connor asked Will out and the young doctor said yes and after a few bumpy starts they became a couple and they both agreed it was time to head back to Chicago.

When they both returned to the windy city, they immediately found an apartment that had both their names on and they both had gotten good money for being out in Riyadh.

Will was not with Connor for his money as he wasn't that type of guy so when they agreed to move in together both men knew what they would be contributing to the relationship.

Will left Connor asleep and went and made breakfast as today was a very big day for them both and Will was starting to get nervous but excited.

When both men came back to Chicago they immediately got a phone call from Sharon Goodwin who was in charge of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and she was looking for two new doctors to join the hospital but she not only wanted new doctors but was looking for a Chief of the emergency department and a Chief of Cardiothoracic and she heard about their time in Riyadh so she was very impressed with both men and their qualifications.

After they both had a meeting with her she announced to the staff who they were and she told them she would see them on the Monday when the new emergency department would open.

Will was busy making breakfast and didn't hear his boyfriend wake up and come into the kitchen but then again Will was listening to some music and when his favorite artist came on which happened to be P!nk and the song was his favorite one and he was singing along to it.

Connor turned over and the first thing that woke him up was that the other side was empty and the sheets were still warm so Connor knew Will had only been gone a few minutes so the man got out of bed and put some boxers on and he went into the kitchen and he saw his boyfriend was making breakfast and he had his back turned and he had the radio on and he was singing his favorite song from his favorite artist.

When Connor had met Will he fell for him straight away but he was scared to open up to someone so he did what he always did and that was act like a complete jackass towards Will and that was a mistake from the start and Will would always avoid him and when they had patients they were constantly arguing but when Connor needed help Will was the bigger man and helped him and after that Connor decided to be less aggressive towards the red head and he actually apologized and he asked Will out on a date and Will said yes and even though they had a rocky start they became a couple.

Will is too busy singing along to the song that he doesn't know he has an audience.

“I ran away today
Ran from the noise, ran away (Ran away)
Don't wanna go back to that place
But don't have no choice, no way

It ain't easy growin' up in World War III
Never knowing what love could be, well, I've seen
I don't want love to destroy me like it did my family
(I don't want love to, I don't want love to)

Can we work it out? (Can we work it out? Oh, oh) Can we be a family?
I promise I'll be better, Mommy, I'll do anything
(I promise I'll do anything to keep you there)
Can we work it out? Can we be a family?
I promise I'll be better (I promise, I promise)
Daddy, please don't leave (Stay)” Will finished singing out loud and when he turned around he saw his boyfriend standing there.

Connor has a massive grin on his face so he doesn't say anything and just goes over to Will and gives him a kiss on the lips and takes his boyfriend's coffee instead.

“That was mine first,” Will says.

“Call it payment for waking me up” Connor says but he still has the grin on his face.

“You love my singing and don't deny it” Will says and goes and makes himself another cup of coffee and turns the radio down.

Will joins Connor at the breakfast bar and they talk about the day ahead of them and they can't wait to get stuck in.

Connor has already met his team and he knows that they are going to get along just fine.

Will met the doctors who work in the ED and they are all excited to work with Will and when Will was talking to the doctors he made sure to get to the nurses as they are the ones who run the ED especially the charge nurse Maggie Lockwood so Will didn't want to get on her bad side.

Two hours later and both men leave for their first day at med.

Will and Connor had just gotten to the hospital and Sharon came up to them and she didn't look happy. In fact she looked stressed and Will was seeing everyone running around so Will thought something had happened.

“Dr's Halstead and Rhodes so glad you're here we have a mass casualty coming in from downtown Chicago the L train crashed so its all hands on deck” Sharon says.

“Tell us where you want us to miss Goodwin” Will says.

“I need you both in the ED today as we don't know how many victims to expect” Sharon says.

After nodding to the woman both men got changed and went straight to work and they didn't stop as they were rushing off their feet and they still had more patients that were arriving.

Will was just finishing on a patient when the doors opened again and Will immediately ran up to greet the paramedics who gave him the rundown of who the patient was and what had happened.

“Maggie, where are we going?” Will asks.

“Room 6” Maggie replied.

“Ok guys let's get the guy off the gurney on my count, One, Two, Three and lift” Will says.

They managed to get the guy off the gurney and got him on the bed and Will examined him and it wasn't good as the guys eyes were completely blown so Will knew that there was no hope for him but the guy had a wife and Will wanted to see of he could get the patient tested to see of he was match for another patient wanting on a heart transplant.

Will spoke to Maggie and asked her to let him know when the wife comes in and he told her his plan and she said that's a nice idea.

Connor was rushed of his feet just like his boyfriend was and when he finished with one patient another one needed his help and Connor had just finished with a guy who only fractured his arm when he saw the doors open and he went to see who the patient was.

“Male, early 30s,he looks to have a broken leg and has a concussion” The female paramedic says.

“ Do we know his name?” Ethan asks.

“Jay” Connor says seeing his boyfriend's brother on the gurney.

Chapter 2

Summary:

Ethan takes over on treating Jay and Connor informs Will.

We find out that Jay and Will haven't spoken in years and they aren't that close.

Hank makes his appearance.

Notes:

Massive update on most of my works guys.

This chapter I decided to have Jay and Will not be that close and I wanted to take their relationship in a different direction as I do think they need to speak about their child hood more.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Ethan looks at Connor and the man looks completely frozen and Ethan takes charge of the situation.

“Bay 2 guys” Ethan orders the paramedics.

Once they get Jay on the bed and the paramedics let Ethan and the other doctors take over Connor has managed to get his bearings.

Ethan comes up to Connor and checks to see if he is ok and Connor informs him that he will stand down as it's family.

Ethan understands that it must be hard for Connor to make this decision and he promises to do all he can for Jay.

2 hours later Ethan comes out of the room and he can see that Connor is by the nurses station looking for a file.

“Hey Connor I've just looked at Jay” Ethan says.

“How is he?” Connor asks.

Before Ethan can answer, April hands over Jay's medical file and Ethan looks at it and he sees that Hank Voight is listed as Jay's next of kin.

“I'm sorry Connor but it looks like I can't tell you anything” Ethan says.

“Can you tell Will anything?” Connor asks.

“I'm sorry but I can't,” Ethan says.

“That's understandable,” Connor says.

Ethan walks away and goes and helps out other patients as they are still busy.

“Maggie can please page Doctor Halstead for me?” Connor asks the nurse.

“Sure Doctor Rhodes” Maggie says and does as Connor asks.

Will is dealing with a patient and he is examining the person and seeing what is wrong with them and he has found the problem so while talking to the relatives of the patient he is surprised when his pager goes off and he looks at it and he sees it's a page from Maggie and he wonders why she wants to see him.

Will tells the relatives how they are going to treat their loved one and he asks the nurse he is working with to start the order on the medication he has given and he walks off to the nurses station to find out what Maggie needs from him.

“Hey Maggie you paged me?” Will asks.

“I did but it's not me who needs you” Maggie says and she points to Connor.

“Doctor Rhodes, what is it you need from me?” Will asks.

“Let's go to the doctors lounge?” Connor asks.

Will is confused and he follows Connor to the lounge and when Connor lets Will go in first the redhead is more confused as Connor closes the door and locks it and he takes Will by the hand and leads him to the sofa and they both sit down.

“Ok Connor I'm confused right now” Will says.

“Will I'm sorry to say this but about 2 hours ago the paramedics brought in a patient who was on the L train and unfortunately that person was Jay” Connor says.

Will sits there completely stunned and he doesn't know how to feel about what Connor has told him.

“I need to get back to work,” Will says.

“Will I'm sure they can survive without you?” Connor asks.

“They can't and I'm the Chief so I need to be out there helping” Will says and he gets up and goes towards the door and unlocked it and left the lounge.

Connor sits there and is stunned as he didn't expect that reaction from his boyfriend.

Will avoids Jay's room and he doesn't ask Ethan any questions about Jay's treatment or recovery.

Will and Jay haven't spoken in 10 years and the last time they spoke the two brothers had said some nasty things to one another.

Ethan had just finished dealing with a patient and April comes up and hands him the x-rays that they took off Jay and they see he has 2 fractured ribs and punctured lung as well as a broken leg.

Ethan asks April to get Doctor Crockett Marcel down here as he is the Head of Orthopedics and to get Doctor Isidore Latham who works in Cardiothoracics.

April does as Ethan asks and she informs him they will be down as soon as they have finished with their patients and Ethan says that's fine.

Ethan goes over to the nurses station and he picks up the phone and phones Jay's next of kin.

The phone rings and it takes a while and Ethan about giving up when he hears a male voice on the other end.

“This is Voight,” Hank says.

“Mr Voight, this is Doctor Ethan Choi. I work at Gaffney hospital and I have a patient with the name of Jay Halstead” Ethan says.

“Is he ok?” Hank asks.

“I need you to come to the hospital and I will tell you everything but he is alive just to let you know” Ethan says.

“I'm on my way” Hank says and he hangs up.

40 minutes later Hank comes into the hospital and he goes over to Ethan and finds out how Jay is doing.

“Hank Voight, I'm here about Jay Halstead” Hank says.

“Mr Voight I'm Doctor Choi we spoke on the phone” Ethan says.

“Is Jay OK?” Hank asks.

“Jay was one of the victims who were hurt when the L-train collapsed and he was brought in and he is stable but unfortunately he has 2 fractured ribs, a punctured lung as well as a broken leg” Ethan says.

“Ok what's the treatment?” Hank asks.

“I have paged two doctors who deal with these types of injuries and I'm just waiting for them to finish with other patients and once we have spoken we will come up with a course of treatment” Ethan says.

“Ok is there a lounge I can sit in?” Hank asks.

Ethan leads Hank to the family room and once he has reassured Hank again Ethan leaves.

Connor has been keeping an eye on his boyfriend but he has been doing it discreetly and making sure Will is not feeling overwhelmed as he knows how far to push his boyfriend.

Doctor Crockett Marcel and Doctor Isidore Latham both arrive in the ED and immediately go to Ethan and he shows them Jay's X-Ray and they both come up with a plan and they ask if the next of kin is here and Ethan says he is waiting in the family lounge.

Doctor Marcel asks if Doctor Halstead knows his brother is here and Ethan says he hasn't been over to see how Jay is and Doctors Marcel and Latham don't seem bothered as it's none of their business.

Doctor Marcel had spoken to Hank and he left to go and let the nurse know what treatment he has chosen for Jay and he sees Will coming over and decides to speak to him as he knows that Doctor Latham will be taking longer to go over the treatment that's best for Jay.

“Hey Will you doing OK?” Marcel asks.

“I'm doing fine thanks for asking Crockett” Will says.

“Look,Will I just wanted to talk about Jay and what sort of treatment he is going through,” Marcel says.

“Actually Crockett I'm not interested as I haven't seen my brother in years so please don't worry yourself” Will says and walks away.

Crockett looks as Will walks away from him and he wonders what has happened between the two brothers but it's not his job to ask as it's clear that Will doesn't want to know.

Doctor Latham tells Hank what course of treatment Jay requires and how long surgery will take and Jay will be in hospital for a few weeks as he goes through two surgeries so they need to be prepared for anything that may happen from them.

Hank has given his consent to whatever both Latham and Crockett need to do and once he is finished talking with Latham Hank goes and gets himself a coffee and as he is standing by the vending machine he spots Jay's brother and he knows that Will hasn't gone to see Jay but he gets the reason as it seems the two brothers are lashing out at each other and whatever they have said in the past is going to take a while for then to forgive each other so Hank walks up to Maggie and asks her to let Will know this is Voights number and if he wants to speak to him get him to phone him and Hank walks back to his son's room.

Notes:

Next chapter Jay wakes up from surgery and he sees Hank's there for him.

We find out more to why Will and Jay aren't that close.

Chapter 3

Summary:

Will reveals more about his past when Voight confronts him.

Jay admits how badly he messed up with his brother.

Maggie is a trur friend through and through.

Notes:

For this chapter I wanted to touch on Wills mother dying as the show don't talk about it that much and I wanted to change things around as I always thought Jay was the oldest but he isn't but in this story he will be.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Maggie finds Will in the doctors lounge and he has his tablet open and he is clearly concentrating on what he is reading.

“What do you need, Maggie?” Will asks.

“How did you know it was me?” Maggie asks.

“I can multitask,” Will says.

Maggie laughs at Will's comment and it's true as from the very first day she met Will he has been able to keep on top of things and still handle more work that gets given to him.

“I just wanted to give you Sergeant Hank Voights number and he said to call him or text him whenever you need to,” Maggie says.

“Thanks Maggie but I don’t need that number and I don't want it” Will says.

“Will I don't mean to pry but is everything ok with you and your brother?” Maggie asks.

“Me and Jay haven't spoken in 10 years, Maggie and to be honest I could care less about him” Will says.

Maggie knows that whatever happened between Jay and Will is none of her business and if Will wants to tell her then that's his choice.

Maggie leaves the doctors lounge and she finds sergeant Voight sitting in Jay's room and she goes up to him.

“Sorry to disturb you Sergeant Voight but Dr Halstead doesn't want your number or anything to do with you or his brother” Maggie says and she hands the piece of paper back to him.

Voight looks at Maggie and he is starting to get angry with how Will is treating Jay so Hank gets up and goes and looks for Will.

Will is just stepping out of the doctors lounge when Hank comes up to Will.

“I take it your sergeant Voight” Will says.

“Yeah I am and I am getting sick of you treating Jay like dirt and not giving a fuck about him” Voight says and he is angry.

Will has never been intimidated before and if Voight thinks he can intimidate Will then he is very much mistaken.

“Sergeant Voight I don't give a shit if you don't like how I'm treating Jay and to be honest it has nothing to do with you so I would be very careful on how you speak to me as I'm not the type of person to be easily scared and just to give you some background information on your precious Jay it's him that needs to be apologizing to me as he is the one who left me to take care of our dying mother and to deal with an abusive father while he was across the country and not once did he keep in touch nor did he come back for her funeral but he could come back for his teams funeral who aren't even blood related to him so no Sergeant Voight I won't be saying sorry to him and next time I'll have you kicked out of my E.D” Will says and he heads to his office.

Everyone in the E.D looks at Voight and they have found out a little more about Will as well.

“Sergeant Voight, I think you better leave” Maggie says behind him.

Maggie walks away and she knows that the entire hospital is going to be talking about what Will revealed but to be honest she understands him a little more but she is going to make sure people stop gossiping about it.

Dr Crockett and Dr Latham are operating together on Jay as they found it would be better to do two surgeries at the same time and they are both the best in their field and since they have worked with each other for years it made more sense plus Crockett can handle Latham and his weird behaviour.

Both Crockett and Latham know they can't do anything for the ribs as they need to heal themselves but Crockett can repair the broken leg but he needs to put some hardware in the leg as that will heal the leg more better.

Latham has decided to remove the lung and he has thought out every scenario and it's the only way for Jay to recover and for him to continue his job as a cop.

7 hours later and both Crockett and Latham have finished the surgery and it was complete hell as Jay crashed a few times and they managed to get him back but every time they did he would crash again and Crockett had to look at what the issue was and he found that it was the hardware that he putting in his leg so Crockett had to re think about what else he could do so Crockett decided to go with a different type of hardware and after placing the second hardware in Jay's leg the man remained stable.

Jay gets wheeled into his room and Hank is waiting for him but Earl the security guard is waiting outside and he is keeping his eyes on Hank.

Crockett and Latham come and tell Hank about what happened in surgery and why it took longer than it was meant to and when they see Earl standing outside they wonder what happened.

“You two missed the show earlier” Dorris says.

“Dorris, one word out of your mouth and I'll make sure you get all the disgusting jobs for a month now go and do some work” Maggie says and Dorris knows not to argue with her.

“Do we want to know?” Crockett asks.

“No you don't and it's none of ANYONE'S BUSINESS WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER” Maggie shouts out and everyone looks at her and they all get on with their work.

“So how did the surgery go?” Maggie asks.

“Longer than we liked it to go but we got where we needed to in the end” Latham says.

“Is Sergeant Voight still here?” Crockett asks.

“Yes he is and when you inform him of what you need to please keep Earl outside?” Maggie asks.

“You expecting Sergeant Voight to be violent, Maggie?” Latham asks.

“Just do as I ask,” Maggie says and walks away.

Every doctor in the hospital knows that the nurses do more hard work than they do but Maggie is the one who takes getting told of if anything goes wrong and she is also the one who will take the blame when something has happened or if she feels like someone is not getting treated right so all she asks is that the doctors respect her and her staff.

Both doctors head in and once Voight acknowledges their presence they tell him about the surgery and when Hank finds out about the hardware and how the first lot caused Jay to crash on the operating table he feels sick but after Crockett tells Hank that the second lot of hardware seems to be working then Hank doesn't feel that scared.

Latham and Crockett tell Hank that when Jay wakes up that's when they can do more tests and find out if he needs more surgery but they have done what they can and with his fractured ribs they need to heal themselves but they will get Ethan in to dress them but that's when Jay is awake and Hank thanks them and they leave.

Jay starts to wake up and his eyes feel very heavy and it takes him a while to get used to where he is.

Once Jay has adjust to where he is he sees Hank sleeping in a chair next to his bed.

When Jay tried to move he let out a cry of pain and Hank woke up straight away and looked around and when saw Jay was awake he got up and hugged him bit made sure to not hurt him.

“What happened?” Jay asks.

“You were involved in the L train derailment” Hank says.

“How long have I been in the hospital for?” Jay asks.

“You have been in the hospital nearly all day” Hank says.

Jay stays silent and he looks at his leg and sees that a cast is on it and he knows that he will be off work for a while.

“Jay I need to tell you something so I need you to keep calm. Can you do that?” Hank asks.

“Yes I can do that” Jay says.

“Your brother Will is working here and he is the chief of the E.D” Hank says.

“How is he doing?” Jay asks.

“He looks to be doing ok and he mentioned something about your mother and your father” Hank says.

“It's true I did leave Will to look after our mum and I didn't keep in touch and my dad was not a nice person” Jay says.

“Why would you do that Jay?” Hank asks.

“I don't know, I just needed to get out of that house and the Army Rangers were the only way out at the time” Jay says.

“Jay I get that you needed to escape but Will is your little brother and you abandoned him and cared more for your team no wonder he hates you” Hank says.

Hank is starting to understand why Will is treating Jay like he is and he is shocked himself as he thought he knew Jay but looks like he didn't.

“I know I messed up and I know I have a lot of work to do but I was just a kid myself” Jay says.

“Jay I get that but you knew that your dad wasn't a nice person and you only cared about yourself” Hank says.

Jay knows Hank's right; he did only care about himself and he has regretted that choice ever since.

“Can you help me make it up to Will?” Jay asks.

“Of course I can kid,” Hank says and even though he is angry with Jay he won't turn his back on his son.

Notes:

Next chapter Jay speaks to Hank some more and they figure out a way to speak to Will.

Will tells Connor more about his past and why he reacted to him telling him that Jay was in the hospital.

Chapter 4

Summary:

Hank and Will talk and Will sets boundaries when it comes to Jay.

The ED get given a reality check by Will and most aren't happy about it.

Maggie spends some time with both Will and Connor.

Notes:

For this story I've decided to make Will and Jay not as close as they are in the show as I'm actually enjoying doing a different side to Will and Jay's relationship.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Hank and Jay spoke and both men decided to give Will some space and hopefully try again.

Will could tell people wanted to ask about what he said and he was honestly getting sick of the looks and the whispering.

Will stood in the middle of the ED and he made sure that his voice was confident.

“Attention everyone.” Will calls out and everyone looks.

“I just wanted to say that if anyone feels the need to focus more on talking about their colleagues' personal life then actually do their jobs I have no problem in showing you all where the door is as our job is to help people and not to stand around gossiping about our colleagues. Do you all understand me?.” Will asks.

Everyone nods at Will and he walks away to go and check on a few patients.

“Wow I thought Dr Halstead was actually a nice person.” Dorris says.

“Just because Dr Halstead has set boundaries Dorris doesn't make him a nasty person and don't forget that I'm your boss.” Maggie says.

“Sorry Maggie.” Dorris says.

“Just go and check on the patient in room 4.” Maggie says.

Dorris does as Maggie says and she knows she is in trouble.

Will checks on a few patients and makes sure that the other doctors are doing their job right and he checks their files and Will comes across Jay's file.

Will opens it and takes a look and he sees he has broken ribs and he had a broken leg but he has had metal hardware put in it and he also sees that he crashed a few times.

“Apparently it was one hell of a surgery.” Connor says coming up beside Will.

“From what I'm reading it looks like it.” Will says.

“Have you spoken to him?.” Connor asks.

“No I have not.” Will says.

“Will I genuinely think you need to speak to him?” Connor asks.

“Connor I love you but me and Jay just aren't as close and that's how it needs to be.” Will says.

“Is this because Jay joined the army rangers?.” Connor asks.

“It's not just about that. It's more about how he just cut me and mum out of his life.” Will says.

When Connor found out what his boyfriend's childhood was like he was shocked and angry but he was also sad that he had to go through something like that.

Connor doesn't say anything as he did the exact same thing with his own family.

“It's not the same.” Will says.

“Isn't it? I cut my dad and sister out of my life.” Connor says.

“Connor, your father isn't a nice person and the way he treated you and your mother was just as bad as my dad treated me.” Will says.

“But I'm just as guilty for the same thing as what Jay did.” Connor says.

“Ok let's stop with the self pity and move on.” Will says.

Connor loves the fact that Will knows him better than anyone and that's what makes their relationship work as they not only know what each other needs they have open and honest communication.

“I'm going to go to my office as I have a lot of paperwork that needs sorting out plus I think someone wants to talk to you.” Connor says and both Will and Connor see Voight walking towards them.

Connor leaves and nods to Voight and the man does the same.

“Sergeant Voight, what can I do for you?.” Will asks as he turns to face the man.

“I was hoping we could talk somewhere private?.” Voight asks.

“Let's talk in my office as that's better.” Will says.

Will and Voight head to Will's office and once inside Will closes the door and he goes and sits at his desk.

“I just wanted to apologise for how I spoke to you and I spoke to Jay and he is sorry for how he treated you.” Hank says.

“Is that all sergeant?.” Will asks.

“Yes. Jay has also said that it's down to you if you wish to speak to him and he won't pressure you.” Hank says.

“Ok I accept your apology and thank you for passing on the message.” Will says.

“Will I just want you to know that Jay has gone through a lot and he isn't the person you think he is.” Hank says.

“Are you speaking as his boss or friend?.” Will asks.

“Both.” Hank says.

“Well I'm glad that he has changed but I don't need him in my life.” Will says.

Voight can see the hurt in Will's eyes and he can also see hatred but it's down to Will to forgive Jay that's if he chooses to do so.

Voight nods and he leaves the office and goes and sees Jay again.

“Hey.” Hank says as he walks into Jay's room.

“Hey. You ok?.” Jay asks Hank.

“I spoke to Will and he doesn't want to speak to you or have you in his life.” Hank says.

“I figured.” Jay says.

“I think he needs time and maybe he will let you be in his life in some other way.” Hank says.

“Maybe.” Jay says.

Hank tells Jay he needs to get back to work as he needs to look at bringing in someone to cover him for the next few months but he will stop by later.

As Hank is leaving he stops at his car and he looks over at the food truck and he sees Will with another Dr and that Dr has black hair and stubble on his face and he sees Will give the man a kiss so it's clear they are dating and he wonders if Will let his big brother into his life.

“So what are we doing tonight?.” Will asks.

“Well it's been a long day so I'm thinking about ordering takeout and watching some boxsets.” Connor says.

“Good idea. How about we start Criminal Minds?.” Will asks.

“I'm thinking of Star Trek Voyager.” Connor says.

“Fine but if we are watching that then I'm ordering Chinese.” Will says.

“Fine but when we are watching One Tree Hill I'm ordering Papa Johns.” Connor says.

“Fine but when we are watching iZombie it's Indian.” Will says.

“What are you two talking about?.” Maggie asks, coming up behind them.

“Sorry Maggie we were just talking about what we are watching and what takeout to have with it.” Connor says.

“You guys actually have a schedule of what you eat and watch?.” Maggie asks.

“No. We think certain takeout goes with certain programs and we have seen certain shows a few times and always order the same thing to go with it.” Will says.

“2 chilli beef burritos.” The guy in the food truck calls out.

Connor goes and collects them while Will speaks to Maggie.

“So how many nurses were gossiping about what I said?.” Will asks.

“By the time Dorris spread the word at least 15.” Maggie says.

“And how many doctors?.” Will asks.

“Why would I know that?.” Maggie asks.

“Maggie Lockwood you know everything that goes on in that ED.” Will says.

“I don't know the exact number but a lot of them made sure to get on with their work and avoid Dorris after what you announced.” Maggie says.

“Good I'm glad I made an impression.” Will says.

Connor comes back and he hands Will his burrito and Will takes it.

“Can I get you anything Maggie?.” Connor asks.

“Maggie will have a BLT.” Will says.

“One BLT coming up.” Connor says.

“You don't need to get me a sandwich.” Maggie says.

“Maggie, it's fine.” Will says.

Connor comes back and he has Maggie's sandwich and he also has three Dr Pepper's.

The group head back to the hospital and Will and Connor go and have lunch together.

Voight gets to the station and he walks past Trudy.

“Hey Voight no Jay today?.” Trudy asks.

“Jay is at the hospital and he is fine as I've been there and spoke to him.” Hank says.

“Was he involved in that L train crash?.” Trudy asks.

“Yeah he was but as I said he is fine. He is going to be off work for a while so make space for a partner.” Hank says.

Trudy laughs at what Hank says.

“Trudy, could you do me a favour?.” Hank asks.

“Yeah, what do you need?.” Trudy asks.

“Can you look up Jay's dad's name? I believe he is called Pat Halstead and see if he has a criminal record. If so, can you find out what he has done?.” Hank asks.

“Yeah that's fine.” Trudy says.

“Thanks.” Hank says and he goes up to the intelligence unit.

Notes:

The next chapter Trudy gets the information Hank asked for and both of them pay a little visit to Pat Halstead.
