On Crying

Summary:

Some free verse poetry. I almost only posted the last part but eh, take the whole train of thought.

Prompt 22: Cry

Work Text:

Sometimes it's nice to shed tears

At a nice movie

Or a good surprise

Sometimes your eyes just need a wash

At times I envy those who can shed tears on command

And those who aren't afraid to let their eyes water in public

For joy, sadness, or rage

And those of us who cry tears that aren't ours

I don't mind the tears that flow for no reason

As long as I'm alone

That single tear that rolls when my eye is dry

I like crying scenes in media

That expression of emotion some so naturally try to hide

Is it weak?

Vulnerable?

Does it make us less than?

For them to be visible

For our bodies to utilize that function

When did we learn that tears are meant to be hidden

And held back?

Taught to rub them out

Wipe them away as soon as they appear

To treat them as unwanted

When they're freeing?

What's it like to have your tears wiped away

By someone other than yourself

By someone who cares

By someone who doesn't want to see you hurting

By someone who doesn't mind that you're crying at all

Who doesn't shame you for it

Or tell you not to cry

Someone who encourages you to let it all out

I'd like to know.

Knowing me, though

I'll never let myself get that chance.
