The blanket problem

Summary:

Lockwood loved to sleep with Lucy, he really did.

After finally becoming a couple, Lucy began sleeping with him in his room on a regular basis. The first months weren’t easy, because how could they be when one of them, or both on especially awful nights, would wake up screaming and drenched in cold sweat and tears. But as months went by and their new reality settled in their bones like a warm cloth, the nights got better.

That is, until their first winter came and the stolen blanket arrived with it.

Or

Lockwood realizes that sleeping with his significant other is not as easy as he thought.

Notes:

So this is yet another silly drabble because this actually happened to me and I thought it would be fun for these two.

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Lockwood loved to sleep with Lucy, he really did.

After finally becoming a couple (much to their friends' relief but also horror), Lucy began sleeping with him in his room on a regular basis. They had slept together before by all means, on restless nights where they would seek comfort in the other like a moth searching for the light, but now it was something more official and it held a certain weight in it. The first months weren’t easy, because how could they be when one of them, or both on especially awful nights, would wake up screaming and drenched in cold sweat and tears. It was hard not to do that when all the trauma and suffering they had been through, separate and together, was enough to make an adult fall into depression.

But as months went by and their new reality, that they had actually won and things were going to be okay, settled in their bones like a warm cloth, the nights got better. They still had nightmares and sleepless nights of course, their wounds ran too deep and left too many scars to just be completely erased but now the promise of what was to come filled their dreams, cutting through the darkness of their night terrors. By the end of their first year of being and sleeping together, nightmares were an occasional affair with most of their nights being peaceful as they slept securely in each other’s arms.

That is, until their first winter came and the stolen blanket arrived with it.

The first time it took him by surprise. He fell asleep comfortably with Lucy on his arms, both wrapped up in their blanket and then before he knew it, he had found himself shivering and freezing in the middle of the night, only to turn to his side and find Lucy all bundled up in a cocoon with their blanket, forming a perfect ball. He felt bad about disturbing Lucy in her sleep over a blanket so he sucked it up and did his best to fall back asleep, embracing himself as best as he could to keep himself warm. The next morning came and Lucy woke up to a curled up Lockwood buried on her side and it took her a solid minute to realize what had happened during the night.

“Oh fuck” She angrily whispered to herself.

Apparently she hadn’t been quiet enough because a couple seconds after, Lockwood stirred in his sleep and soon his eyes fluttered open. She took this opportunity to sit on the bed, getting out of her little blanket nest.

“Morning darling” He said with his deep morning voice that always made Lucy melt.

“Morning…I’m so sorry” She replied immediately feeling guilty.

He slowly blinked, trying to get rid of the sleep on his eyes, and lifted himself onto one arm with a puzzled expression on his face.

“Why for?” He inquired curiously.

“I took the blanket for myself” She mumbled, looking away.

He chuckled. “Just that? It’s okay, I don’t mind.”

“You were literally curled up underneath me to keep yourself warm” She deadpanned.

He fully sat up now and cupped her face tenderly, pushing a lock of her behind her ear.

“Luce, you were asleep …it’s seriously nothing, don’t worry about it.”

“I promise I won’t do it anymore” She pouted as she leaned against his warm touch.

But then, the next night arrived and the story repeated with Lockwood being stripped off the blanket, and leaving him to once again, curl up against Lucy as best as he could. The sun rose the next day and found Lucy apologizing to Lockwood a second time with the same promise. More nights passed and soon enough, they entered a quite ironically funny cycle of Lucy stealing the blanket and apologizing the next morning.

If someone were to ask Lockwood, he would never admit it or even tell Lucy about it but the truth was that after the first five days or so, he threw being a gentleman out of the window and tried his best to retrieve at least a little bit of the blanket back for himself but to no avail since Lucy had wrapped herself so tightly with it that it had been impossible for him to move her. He had always known this and it was something he admired but for Lucy to be such a short and cute little thing, she had the strength of a grown man. Even then, he had faith and refused to get another one, simply because he enjoyed the feeling of falling asleep with Lucy in his arms and both of them wrapped up in the same blanket.

By the time Christmas arrived, Lucy felt already so mortified that one of her gifts for Lockwood was a blanket for himself, extra large and extra fluffy.

“You really didn’t have to do this, love” He smiled at her.

“Trust me, it’s necessary and it’s better this way” She countered.

“I don’t mind…” Lockwood insisted.

“I know you do, baby, but you’re too much of a fool in love to tell me so” She affirmed with a smirk on her face.

Without any warning, Lockwood left the blanket aside and moved forward, sweeping Lucy off her feet and spinning her around to just end up kissing her deeply in front of their poor friends that were unfortunate spectators.

“Get a room, you two.”

“Let’s keep it PG Locky.”

“I can’t believe you still live with them Karim.”

“Do you fucking think I want to?! I deal with this shit at least three times a day .”

A choir of extremely annoyed voices said at the same time but sadly for them, every single word fell on deaf ears as they continued kissing in their own sweet world.

Later that night, they both went to bed, each with their respective blankets this time and drifted to a peaceful sleep in each other’s arms. Lockwood shouldn’t really have been surprised at all, he should have seen this coming but somehow he still found himself fazed when he woke up in the middle of the night shivering, just to move and come face to face with Lucy, whom had managed to not only wrap herself in her blanket, but also took Lockwood’s blanket and created around her tiny body a perfect little cocoon.

Lockwood rolled to his back and chuckled to himself quietly at his girlfriend’s antics. Girlfriend . It still amazed him, even after a year of dating, just how lucky he was that she really chose him. But if he was honest, Lucy was already so much more than just his girlfriend, she was his best friend, his anchor, his shelter against the world…she was his entire universe. And having this in mind, he truly didn’t care about something so silly like stealing a blanket, even though she clearly did. If making herself a little ball of blankets made her sleep safe and sound by his side, he was more than happy to give them to her, he would give her all the blankets in England for that matter.

He lightly shook his head and went to stand up to go and look for his hoodie, but before he could get up from bed, he felt a pair of small arms wrap around him and pull him back to bed. Soon, Lucy’s beautiful face came into his visual field, all bathed with the pale rays of the moonlight that was peeking shyly through the curtains of their room.

“Where do you think you’re going?” She whispered playfully.

“Just getting something real quick darling” He smiled at her.

She raised her eyebrow at him. “And what is that?.”

“Nothing important, it can wait”.

She then took a quick glance at her body, covered with both blankets and then a small oh escaped her lips before a deep blush tinted her cheeks.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay Luce, it really is.”

Lucy looked at him, studying him, taking him in as if she could read his thoughts perfectly written on his face, then leaned in to plant a soft kiss on his lips while her hand caressed his cheek.

“You would really freeze to death before even considering waking me up” She stated because it wasn’t a question.

“I told you I didn’t mind” He shrugged.

“Well, I do because I don’t have any use for a dead boyfriend, and besides” She paused and proceeded to engulf both of them with both covers. “I would die first before letting that happen…you’re stuck in this bed and sharing the blankets with me forever”.

He could only laugh before spooning her from behind and burying his face on her hair, taking in her intoxicating smell of lavender and lilies as it filled his lungs.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

And just like that, both fell asleep once again, all bundled up in their little cocoon of dreams for the future.

After that night, Lucy didn’t keep stealing the blankets…At least not until the next winter.

Notes:

Just so you know, I haven’t taken my bf’s blanket…yet. Lucy is just special.
