Soap died in that tunnel. The bullet from Makarov's gun struck him in the head, and the last thing he heard was Ghost's voice.
Until he woke up. Crazed by hunger, he kills his captors before they get a word in and runs. But he's not Johnny. He's a dangerous, frozen monster. His heart and soul feel the same, want the same, but he can never go back to his old life.
Eventually, he feels under control enough to seek help from an old friend in hopes of putting his new eternal existence to use. But beyond that, he fights with himself on how to face the one other soul that knew him, afraid that without his humanity, the ghost he loved would turn against him in hatred. Or fear.
