“Fee… Fee, you listening?”
Fiona Thyme nearly jumped out of her seat when she felt a hand be placed on arm. She snapped her head around, seeing May next to her in the driver’s seat as May brought the car to a stop at a stop sign.
“Huh? Oh yeah, sorry.” Fiona bashfully replied. May tilted her head as she glanced at Fiona before looking back to the road. “You're worried about dinner, aren't you?” May said as she began to drive past the sign.
“Well… a little. I just want to make a good first impression. I know she and I technically already met, but I’m not really counting the whole 'pulling me over' thing.”
“Fee, relax. Winter is going to love you.”
“I know, you keep saying that but… I’m still a little nervous.”
“Why, what's up?” May asked. She briefly paused, then let out a mix of a sigh and a groan. “Wait, Robyn and Jo said something, didn’t they?”
“Well… yeah." Fiona nervously responded. "They mentioned Winter can be a little… stone-faced.”
May sighed again and shook her head. “Of course they think that, they’ve only seen Winter in work mode. I mean she’s a cop, of course she’s overly-serious when she’s working. Trust me, she’s different when she’s not on the job.”
“They also mentioned that she’s kind of a... fancy pants?”
May squinted and recoiled slightly. “Fancy Pants?”
“They just said she has…” Fiona paused in thought for a moment. “... absurd living standards?”
May laughed. “Yeah, okay. That's fair, she does. Like for example, a few weeks ago Winter bought 5000 thread count bedsheets.”
Fiona's eyes went wide. “5000!? They make them that high?”
“They come in special order from some place back in Atlas. They apparently cost two months of her salary for a set.”
“Are they at least worth it?”
May shrugged. “I dunno. She won’t let me sleep in them.”
“Why?” Fiona incredulously asked.
“Because I won’t wear the stupid special 500 lien pajamas she says I'd have to wear.”
“500 lien for a set of pajamas!?”
“Yeah, they’re made of some special fabric that won’t damage the sheets or something. Honestly, sounds like a scam to me.” May said as she pulled into the restaurant parking lot and parked her car.
Fiona saw Winter sitting on a bench outside waiting for them as May parked the car. She felt her anxiety levels rising again as she and May approached Winter, both from how stoic and serious Winter seemed to be staring at her, and how elegant Winter’s dress was that night. Fiona felt underdressed in her button down and nice work pants, but at least May and her were dressed in about the same way.
“Hey Winnie.” Fiona heard May say just before kissing Winter on the cheek. Winter slightly smiled when May kissed her, but her expression swiftly shifted back to serious. “I know you both have technically met once but Winter, this is Fiona. Fiona, this is Winter.”
Fiona stepped forward and extended her hand to Winter. “It’s really nice to meet you.”
Fiona stood there looking up at Winter, seeing Winter stare back at her for a moment, look down to her hand, then look up and meet her eyes again.
“Uh Winter?” May said. “This is the part where you say how nice it is to meet Fiona.”
Fiona felt sweat forming on her brow and a lump forming in her throat. She stared into Winter's icy blue eyes as they stared back into hers. She began to notice little details on Winter’s face.
Winter’s eyes seemed glazed and glassy. If Fiona didn’t know better, she’d think Winter wasn’t paying attention at all. Fiona then noticed Winter’s chin and mouth were quivering. Whatever Winter was feeling, Fiona could tell she was barely keeping it in.
Fiona found herself being tightly embraced by Winter a second later. Stunned motionless and confused, she looked over to May, who simply shrugged.
Fiona heard huffing and sniffling coming from Winter a moment later, and saw May’s face shift from confusion to concern. “Winnie?”
“Are you-?” Fiona asked, before being cut off by Winter.
“Thank you.” Winter choked out.
“I’m sorry, I don't-”
“Thank you." Fiona felt Winter pull her in tighter. "Thank you for being there for May through everything she went through. For everything you’ve done for her.”
Fiona felt her eyes water as her mouth curled into a smile. She tightly returned Winter’s embrace, and began to rub Winter’s back while Winter cried, only letting go when she felt Winter start to release her. Winter looked back at her, wiping tears from her face. “It’s great to finally meet you.”
Fiona looked over at May, seeing May smile back at her, then looked back at Winter. “It’s great to finally meet you too.”
