Chapter 1: Don't Worry

Chapter Text

Tossing and turning in the surprisingly uncomfortable hotel bed while you restlessly hope to finally drift off to sleep, wasn't exactly how wanted to be spending your last night in New York.
The past few days of the trip that was ment to change your life can now only be described as hellish.
You came to New York with your now ex fiance Harris, the pair of you traveled with the intention to have a fairytale wedding, the sort you'd read about in magazines as a teenager.
However, the fairytale soon turned into a nightmare.
As you were getting ready in the very hotel room you're lying awake in now, having a laugh and an overall lovely time with your mum and bridesmaids, you receive an earth shattering message from the best man saying.
'Elodie im so sorry, I'm so fucking sorry Harris called off the wedding'
It's like the whole world stops, all you can hear is the rapid beating of your heart and a high pitched ringing sound.
You drop the phone onto the soft carpet and feel helpless, frozen in time.
While your bridesmaids pick up the phone and stare up at you in concern and then read the message in horror.
your mum goes to hold you but already seeing you on the floor in a state of shock her brain immediately goes into overdrive.
She reads the message and then goes into protective mum mode
Telling the bridesmaids to inform the guest that unfortunately the wedding has been called off.
Once that's taken care of she too falls to the floor and holds you while the realisation that you've lost the love of your life really sets in.
The pair of you were ment to be together, forever.
He said it, you said it, litterally everyone who knew both of you said it so why couldn't it be true!
Eventually your mum got you into the bed and held you while you cried so eventually becoming so exhausted you fall asleep.
The days after have been a numb blur, you can't remember much about them because
You're so emotionally drained.
But from what little there is to remember you do know that you never want to relive them again and, you absolutely hate Harris.
Somewhere in the blur of days you found out why he called off the wedding.
It wasn't even him that even told you it was your mum.
You haven't spoken to him since the day before the wedding when everything seemed perfect, little did you know it was far from it.
Harris had been cheating on you for months, about 5 to be exact.
You didn't think you could hate someone as much as you hate Harris.
You hate him for how he could disregard your love, disregard everything that was there.
Or atleast you thought was there.
You've decided you need to move on or atleast forget about him for as long as is humanly possible.
Now that you've figured out that you're not going to just be able to sleep everything away you get up out of the bed and check the time.
21:57 fuck it you need a drink.
After deciding on just going to the hotel bar because you cant be arsed going anywhere else, you make yourself look like a girl thats not just been basically left at the alter not even 72 hours ago by throwing on a short black slip dress, fishnets a leather jacket and your classic doc's.
You love being an over packer sometimes.
After brushing your hair you look in the mirror and finally look and feel a bit more like yourself again, not just a shell of the person you left for New York.
Before leaving the room you debate texting your mum who's staying in the other room, eventually deciding against it because it's not like you're leaving the hotel.
When you get down to the bar, it mostly empty aside from a couple obnoxiously making out and a guy with a mop of dark curly hair and a slightly grossed out look on his face sat at the other side a few stools away.
You decide to sit closer to him rather than the loved up couple because, well it would just be awkward otherwise wouldn't it?
You sit one stool apart from the brunette man and order your drink.
For a while you sit there enjoying your own company for the first time in what feels like years
That is untill the couples making out gets so adventurous? That the bartender asks them to leave the bar.
Thankfully they did so you say
"Thank fuck for that" under your breath.
The brunette man must hear you because he hums in agreement.
You look up at him just to find he's looking at you already.
His lips curled into a boyish smirk.
You copy his expression.
"That was getting ridiculous right?" He giggles
"Right! Like live your life and all but my god" you reply to the stranger with the same giggly tone.
You sit in comfortable silence for a minute before a tall man with a blonde shaved buzz cut drunkenly walks over to the bar shouting
"Matty!"
"You'll never guess wha- ohhh" he then notices you and shoots the brunette boy who you now know as Matty a knowing look.
He quickly turns around and walks back the way he came from.
"Sorry that was George" he says a bit sheepishly.
You chuckle and assure him that it was perfectly fine.
"Anyways, now that you know my name what's yours?" Matty asks
"Elodie" you reply and Mattys smile only grows
"That's a gorgeous name" he replies smoothly.
You feel the familiar heat of blush start to burn your face, in an attempt to hide it you tip your head down and smile at the ground and thank him.
Little do you know this makes Matty's heart melt at how adorable you are.
For another couple hours the two of you talk about so much including your almost wedding, he's never even met Harris but he already has a very strong disliking for the guy.
After the whole wedding palaver talk is over the conversation becomes lighter and you two order more drinks and share story's from your childhoods and have a great little chat.
Matty makes you feel heard unlike anyone else in your life did and you know that's crazy to say cliché even, because you've only known the guy an hour or two but you'd already consider each other friends.
At some point during the evening you exchange phone numbers, which is something both of you will be thankful for in the morning.
You glance down at your phone and check the time and see its 2am and after you remember your flight to home is at 7am you explain the situation to Matty and he completely gets it and quite spontaneously ask if you'd like to go for coffee with him next time he's in London
You happily accept his offer and give him a quick hug before heading back to your room.
In the lift you debate if saying yes to the whole coffee 'date' thing was smart considering you were ment to be married to the supposed love of your life litterally 3 days ago but eventually you came to the conclusion that it was fine and it was the same as going out with any of your other friends for coffee.
And who knows where this could go?
