Chapter 1: Prologue

“…Chosen Hero.”
Link hasn’t heard those words addressed to him since he was eleven years old. His teeth and bones were shaken by them. He bit his lower lip.
Just a second ago, he was in his kitchen helping his wife cook dinner. After a hot day of farm work, dealing with cuccos, and arguing with clients, he looked forward to the end of the day with his wife. They spend time together and have conversations that lasted. This was his life for over a decade.
“Hello? Excuse me? Are you Link? You know, the Chosen Hero?” The young man standing outside in front of the open door had questioned. He held what looked like a sword wrapped in a sheet. He had bright eyes. He also wore a green tunic that reminded Link of his own fairy tunic.
Link stared at the man longer than was comfortable. It was all he was able to do for the moment. His fingers clenched the door frame till they went white. He always wanted to be considered a ‘hero’. So why now that he hears it, it irked something in his chest. Everything he’s been through was so long ago, why did he care so much?
“Come on. It’s probably not even him. This is so damn embarrassing,” Another voice had uttered. A voice of a man that Link hadn’t seen until he made an appearance at the door. The first thing he noticed about him were that his eyebrows were furrowed and his arms crossed. The second thing was that there was a pink strand in his honey blonde hair. The two men could almost pass as brothers.
“No, he hasn’t even answered yet,” Bright Eyes replied. He then faced Link, “Well?”
Link slowly shook his head.
“Really?” The speech of the man with the bright eyes sounded unsure and confused. “Well, sorry for disrupting your evening, I guess.”
They turned around and all Link had done was stand at the door like a fool. As soon as he noticed the men trotting away, his jaw began to regain some movement. How did they know? Who were they? Why are they after him? He had to know.
“Wait!” Link reached out a hand. “How did you know?”
As he turned around, the man with the pink hair arched an eyebrow. He had drab eyes.
“Know what?”
Link placed the tip of his fingers against his chest, “That I’m the Chosen Hero. How did you know?”
No one, but Malon and Zelda knew that.
“Are you Link?” Bright eyes asked.
“Y-yes?”
”See I told you his name would be Link,” he turned to his companion then bad to Link. “I knew you were Link. The Gods told me,” Then the mysterious man’s eyes glowed and so did his companions. It was subtle and barely noticeable. But Link saw it. Then he experienced an electric shock that prickled along his spine. It was nothing he’s ever felt before. It was a weird tingle, yet in a positive way. He suddenly felt weirdly drawn to them. Like there was something screaming inside of him, claiming that these guys are his destiny.
It was true then, he was still considered a hero to the goddesses. Even though his adventures were like dreams that never came to be acknowledged.
Bright eyes began to unwrap the sheet from the sword. Link felt his lungs give up as he saw the familiar purple hilt glisten in the setting sun. His mouth dropped. The Master Sword. He hauled up his hand to feel the mesmerizing hilt, but stopped. Only letting his hands hover over it. He hadn’t seen the sword in decades, yet the way it glistened was much too familiar for it to feel like it’s been that long.
Bright eyes revealed his white teeth as he stared at the sword, “You probably recognize this, right?” He beamed at her like she was an old friend he hadn’t seen in years. Link couldn’t help but cringe.
“How did you…? Is it real?”
Oh, it was real. He knew it was real. Everything was all too familiar. He could feel it through the way the goosebumps formed on his skin. The way he felt his blood pumped through his pulse. The way his fingers itched to grasp the hilt like it was second nature, but for some reason resisted the urge by chewing his lip. An old habit that seemed to make a sudden comeback.
Then he felt that electric shock again. This time it was more powerful. This wasn’t just a conversation with strangers. Link knew at the very moment that this was going to be his life.
Chapter 2: Three Hero’s
Summary:
The three hero’s are dropped off in a new land. They struggle to fight a group of bokoblins together.

Chapter Text
The Hero of Time was propelled out of the purple vortex like two negative magnets on contact. He staggered forward, almost tripping over his own feet. This would be impossible to get used to. He had passed through a portal to a different realm before, but he didn’t think something like this would happen again.
The Hero of the Sky, gracefully stepped out of the vortex behind while the Hero of Legend was pushed to the floor, landing almost on his face. He grumbled. Time suppressed a laugh before observing his surroundings.
Being in a new land was weird for him. He hadn’t traveled in decades. And he's definitely never traveled with two chosen heroes before. Nevertheless, he had only met them a couple days ago and felt blanked out. This moment should be transformative, but it only made him press his lips in diffidence.
He stared at the other heroes from behind. Sky placed a friendly hand on Legends shoulder, but Legend only stood there with his arms to his side. Everything was all so awkward.
Sky, he had learned, had helped the Goddesses forge the Master Sword by going through callous trials. He had said it in such confidence that Time applauded. It's admirable to talk to the same person who left a life long legacy that will never be erased. Yet that night, Time found it difficult to fall asleep.
Legend had told Time, on the night they met, his embodiment. While saving Hyrule, Legend claimed to feat like a ferocious, heartless beast. His inner beast. Sometimes Time hoped he could embody a beast.
Another one, Time’s stomach turned. A new Hyrule probably meant another hero. It’s what Time came to understand. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Another companion instead of an uneven number group.
The air here was unlike anything Time breathed. It smelled crisp and earthy, yet also like an ancient book. They were in the middle of a field that was seemingly endless. It was just like Hyrule Field in Time’s Hyrule. Yet, there was no familiarity. And no map. And no civilization. And…
…a tower! A visible tower at the horizon. Time grinned. This is easy so far.
“Over there. We ought to go to that tower,” Time spoke in a low voice as he pointed. “There may be people there. We can even get information about another chosen hero.”
Sky grunted in agreement as his face lit up. He placed his hands on his hips. Legend rolled his eyes though. Anyone could have come to the conclusion that Time came to. And it bugged him. And he had a taste for a dispute.
“Y’know, a tower doesn’t automatically mean that there are people. Trust me,” He adjusted his hat. “Don’t keep your hopes up for nothing. It’s the biggest mistake you can make.”
They all knew that. They all had come to understand that. But this situation was different.
Time glanced at Legend with disdain. He loathed when someone would diverge from his advice. It felt like he was being downplayed or was taken seriously. It sparked a small, but unshakable feeling of irritation.
Sky squinted his eyes, “Well, it’s better than mindlessly walking the opposite direction. What choice do we have?”
Time smiled at his remark.
“Fine. We shall proceed to the tower. But I sense a threat in that direction,” Legend gave a sneering smile.
Time’s face dropped. Legend pushed past him towards the tower.

Legend was annoyingly correct. They walked right into a monster camp. Shouldn’t be an issue for three Heroes of Courage. So this wasn’t much of a threat.
Time unsheathed his sword. He locked his eyes on his target with disgust. A silver bokoblin. A vial creature that stunk with rot and mold. A brainless minion to a Pig. It held only a club. Easy. He is not going to let this thing make him even sweat because it doesn’t even deserve that.
With indolence, Time thrusted the sword towards the thing while its chest was wide open. A simple attack that the thing would be too stupid to understand. The target was clear and plain.
As he clashed down his sword, his arm suddenly was flung up with a string of force. The bokoblin parried his sword. The Biggoron Sword. With a club. Time’s arms swung back down towards the head, but the thing blocked the slash before it could do damage.
What the hell? His heart beat violently against his chest. The bokoblin screeched as ugly sound before it jumped in the air aiming its club right at Time’s head. He jumped to the side making the bokoblin crash right onto the dirt.
He raked his sword again as soon as he noticed an opening on its neck. Its arms were still disoriented from the block. This for sure it can not block. As his sword went down. A flash of green and dirty blonde hair flashed his eyes. He shrieked as he released his sword from his grip before he could do any damage. The bokoblin club struck him right into his knee. The one place he didn’t have amour on. He collapsed to the dirt.
Black blood splattered.
“Dammit, Sky!” Time screeched. “You cannot go in front of my sword while I’m attacking.”
“Sorry! It looked like you were struggling!” Sky waved the Master Sword before he ran off to another bokoblin.
Struggling? He wasn’t struggling. He’s struggled before and that was not struggling. But he couldn’t even kill that thing right away. It took a few tries and he didn’t even lay a strike on the thing.
Time stood up with a stutter. His blistering and hurting knee. It hurts to get up. But it doesn't matter. He’s gotten worse. A bruise won’t do anything. Beads of sweat populated his face. He picked up his sword, away from the black blood leaking out of the bokoblin. Like his sword would somehow get infected by the unusual blood.
Legend focused on his own foe, failing to sweep the sword out of the blue bokoblins hand. The thing lunged towards him. Legend pranced backwards. Then it lunged towards him again. He jumped backwards, but unaware of his companion behind, he knocked right into Sky. Elbowing him right in the gut.
Sky fell on his back. His spine hitting right on a rock. The staggering pain made him curl into a ball. Grasping his waist to ease the tenderness, without ever letting go of his sword.
“Legend!” He huffed. He swung his head up to meet with Legend, but was instead met with a bokoblin hanging over him. Its teeth were sharp and ready to swing its sword down. Before an orange sword stabbed right through the stomach of the bokoblin. Black blood splattered on Sky’s face. The sword then slid out smoothly. The bokoblin fell revealing Legend with the orange sword in hand. Legend met Sky’s with eyes that were hard to read. Did he stare in disparagement? Pity? Disgust? Anger?
When it came down to the last bokoblin, Time readied his stance as he stood behind it. It was distracted by Legend, so this was the perfect opportunity to prove himself. In one breath, Time thrust right towards the beast. Legend also advanced towards it. With much force and aggression, Tike punctured right through the thick, silver skin before quickly retrieving his sword. He watched as the thing bled out. On the opposite side, the tip of Legends sword barely passed through the bokoblin. Red blood dripped.
“Ow!” Legend shrieked. “You nicked me!”
The bokoblin was pierced right through by Biggoron sword, as well as the tip of the sword lightly striking Legend's arm. His tunic absorbed his blood. He dropped his sword and applied a hand to the wound. His palm suddenly became coated in his own blood.
Time apologized profusely. But all Legend did was ignore him while giving him a gloomy look. Time gave him a frown back. His face was covered in guilt. He has no desire to hurt anyone. He was the only one to draw blood among the hero’s. Not even the bokoblins did it.
Sky had bandaged the wound with tape, “It isn’t too deep for stitches. It will heal on its own.”
“I should probably see a proper doctor,” His face was in a dramatic panic. “Y’know, what if I bleed out.”
Again, Time frowned. It was a lot harder fighting with someone he wasn’t familiar with.
“Don’t be a baby. It’s just a little nick like you said,” Sky applied pressure to the cut. “And you pushed me into a rock. I wouldn’t be surprised if you broke my spine.”
Legend scowled, “Hey, I saved your butt out there. I don’t hear a thank you.”
“I wouldn’t need saving if you didn’t push me into a rock,” Sky rolled his eyes.
Time sat on the grass as he watched the other in the corner of his eye. He rubbed his knee. When he applied pressure to it, he couldn’t help but grit his teeth. This confrontation could have gone a lot better. He has fought alongside others, and never once did it result in injuries to all of them because of their own teammates. The bokoblins didn’t even lay a finger on either of them.
The bokoblins, though, were noticeably stronger.
Time snicker as he itched his scalp. He shook his head in frustration, “Those are the monsters with black blood.”
Sky shifted his focus to him. His eyebrows furrowed like he was waiting for him to say more.
“Those are the black blooded monsters you were talking about, Sky.”
“See!? I believe this is why our fate has crossed,” Sky blurted out. “I mean, soon after they showed up causing such a big ruckus on the surface, I met Legend, then you.”
Legend frowned and looked away. His breathing became heavy. “Yeah, me too.”
Sky wrapped his arms around Time’s nape, “We can take on whatever comes at us without fail. You guys really showed your spirit. No doubt about it.”
Time pushed away his arm. He remained silent. Back home, he’s only a normal farmhand. He’d convince himself that for decades.
Legend stiffened, “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“What was so evil about what I said?” Sky questioned.
Subsequently, everyone fell silent. It was so quiet it was drowning. The grass outside resolutely swayed in the wind. Yet, inside, an excruciating sense of remorse gnaws at their insides. All they could do was continue their travel.

Chapter 3: Lookout Landing
Summary:
The three hero’s meet Link and Zelda. It doesn’t go very well.

Upon arriving at the tower, they discovered that a complete wooden wall encircled it. Along with tops of buildings sticking out above the wall and the sounds of throngs of people could be heard. There was a gate open to entry, with two gaunt guards on either side. Their armor had rusted, making them appear unjust. The rusted spears they carried appeared as though they would break at any moment.
The guards assumed a wide stance and aimed their spears before the heroes could get too close. They had a hint of hesitation, but their faces were fixed in an angry gaze.
Without thought, Legend and Sky had their hands on the hilt of their sword, ready for battle. Time had stood still giving no reaction. His face was blank, but his mind was ready for whatever was to come.
“Drop your weapons!” One guard yelled. “No outside weapons allowed beyond this point!” His voice was shaky.
Time drew his eyebrows together. He laid his sword down softly on the grass. He could tell from the guard's demeanor that even without his sword, he would be able to handle him. He only wanted to defuse the situation at this point to avoid any injuries. However, Sky and Legend do not comply and still rested their hand on the hilt of their swords.
“Drop your weapons or we charge,” The guard yelled. He inched a little closer.
Time, with a look, urged them to drop their weapons. Legend huffed. He wrinkled his brow and tentatively set his weapon on the ground. Sky instead hugs his sword that was wrapped in a sheet up to the hilt. Time glanced at him, waiting for him to put down the Master Sword, but instead he ignored Time’s look.
“Do I need to repeat myself?!” His voice was loud and frantic. He stepped closer. This situation was only escalating and that never ends well.
“Sky,” Time murmured. “Put down the sword.”
There was a pause. Time tapped his fingers together, anticipating Sky’s reply.
“No,” Sky scowled.
“No?”
“I will not put this sword below me. I crafted her, I know her, and I will not disrespect this blade,” Sky said with might.
“Sky, if someone gets hurt, you will be to blame,” Time calmly spat with bane.
That stung and Time knew it would. Those words were made to hurt any Chosen Hero. Legend glanced over at Time. His brows raised at him. His head lightly shook.
“Stop it. I don’t care. I value this blade as should you. I don’t care what I’ll have to do to protect her,” Sky’s face was fierce and bright. Like he knew who he was and what he believed with confidence.
The guard was drawing closer. As the point of the spear continued to stare, tension rose.
“Just drop the goddamn sword, Sky,” Legend loudly whispered.
“Sky…” Time uttered.
The guards stopped, ready to charge at them, “I won't ask again!” His voice sounded more fierce.
“Sky!” Legend screeched.
The guard yells and lunges towards them, aiming the spear directly at Time. All Time had to do is dodge the onslaught. But what about the others? This could lead to someone being injured. A possible arrest? All this because Sky couldn’t just throw the sword on the ground. Oh gods. This is going to cause more trouble than it has to.
“What’s going on here?! Burwar!?” A stern voice echoed. The guard, Burwar, came to a sudden halt and his eyes became wide. He seemed to crumble at the command.
The heroes just stood there, motionless, as they awaited something to happen. Time peered at a woman whose hands were on her hips as she stood behind the open gates. It appeared as though she gave the order.
She power walked to Burwar. Her face was serious, yet kind. Her brows furrowed and her mouth was downturned.
Burwar's posture set once more, “Do not come near, they are armed!”
The women’s skin was pale, almost gray. Her cheekbones protruded and her face was thin. Dark bags formed beneath his green eyes. Her eyes, though, flared with a consecrated light. Time hadn't seen anything like that before.
To Time’s surprise, the woman placed a hand on the spear the guard pointed, gently pushing it down. Does she not feel threatened?
The woman took a step forward. Her short blonde hair was blown into her face by the wind, but she didn't care. “I’m sorry to inform you, but this place is only open to the Zonai Survey Team and Royal Assistance. May I ask what your business here is?”
Sky looked up at Time and gave him a lopsided smile. The kind of smile that assures him that he will handle the speaking. Time couldn’t help but scrunch his nose backs at Sky. Time had not been persuaded by him that he was a proficient speaker. He actually persuaded him of the exact opposite.
Sky stepped forward.
“We would like to know if a man that goes by the name of Link is around here!”
The air had immediately became stale. The birds stopped chirping. The wind fell dead. He could feel the tension knot in his core. Sky looked up at Time with wide eyes and a sheepish smile. Oh, he knew he screwed up, but wasn’t sure why.
The woman squinted her green eyes and gave a leery smile, “Of course,” she said through her teeth. “Just give us one moment.” The woman whispered something to a guard. A second later, the guard ran in through the gate.
Sky gave a horrified smile, trying to have some type of hope that they will really bring a man names Link
The hero with the pink strands sighed as he rolled his eyes. He placed a hand over his face and dropped his head. He turned his heel and walked the opposite direction without consulting the others. Time protested, insisting he stay. They should stick together, right? That’s what a team does.
Legend waved off a hand at Time.
“Zelda!” A distant voice rang in the near distance.
Legend stopped in his tracks and quickly snapped his head the other way. Sky’s eyes became wide and his mouth formed into a smile.
“You’re Zelda!?” Sky leaned forward.
The female pursed her lips. This is worthwhile. This ought to work out well. It's Zelda. That implies that they will soon meet another Link and be able to leave this place.
“Zelda! I brought the bananas!” A skinny young man ran past the gates with the two other guards following behind him. A goofy look of panic set in his eyes when he made eye contact with Time. “Stand back!”
With one arm, he threw the bananas. Terrifying.
Sky gave his head a scratch. Time raised an eyebrow. Legend gave an indignant stare at the bananas. The man then established his position and stood there. His breath stopped and his eyes wrinkled.
“Is it for us? Or…” Sky’s voice trailed off.
The young man raised a brow, “You don’t want the bananas?”
Sky looked up at Time with big eyes, mouthing something that Time couldn’t understand. He then made an amused smile, “I’m sorry, but I don’t even know what bananas are. We don’t mean to-“
“Look,” Legend interrupted, “I don’t have the patience for this crap. You either take us to Link and assist us or don’t and stop with this nonsense.”
Time turned and gave Legend the slightest smile. Although at times he could be a bit irritable with his attitude, he was also helpful and straight to the point. On the other hand, Sky grumbled at Legends' comment.
The youth approached the spot where he flung the banana. His long golden hair was blown into his face by the wind. Time wondered what was going through his mind, but there was nothing on his face. He swept his hair away from his face with his left arm and picked up the bananas.
Up closer, it was difficult not to notice the young man's body anomalies. His right arm's sleeve was tied to his shoulder. It was as if his arm had been severed at the shoulder. In the left side of his face, there was a red and pink discoloration and took to be a rough texture. Though, it was hard to see finer details from afar.
He chuckled as he stood up, “You’ve come to the right place.”
Legend lifted a brow and crossed his arms.
“I’m Link,” he said. “Join me inside? You guys look awfully worn out.”

The Lookout Landing, they discovered, is where they landed at. The place was lively and cultured. Everyone there appeared to have a purpose and a place in the crowd. People gawked at them as they passed.
The castle hung above. It was always what represented a kingdom. A big, mighty castle symbolized a strong, wealthy kingdom. Yet, this castle loomed over the Lookout Landing like a corpse. It would sit there until it would eventually withered away. Time remembered when the castle back at home was in ruin. That’s when Hyrule was at its worst.
Link and Zelda guided them down into what they called the Emergency Shelter, but it wasn’t treated as one. It was more like a place where people relaxed, prayed, cooked, and studied.
Zelda wandered off to the kitchenette while Link went to a table that sat two Hylian’s. The Hylians rose from their seats, nodding in agreement with whatever Link had just said. Link gestured for the other Link to sit down
At the table, Link set teacups while Zelda poured the tea. On one side, Legend, Time, and Sky sat together. On the other side, Link and Zelda sat shoulder to shoulder. They leaned into each and both furrowed their brows. Their eyes focused on the others in front of them with their full attention.
It was hard not to stare at scars that habited Link’s left side. It traveled from his forehead to his cheek, down his neck. These are the scars of a hero. Scars of someone who fought. But when Time and Link met eyes, Time didn’t feel anything.
“You guys look alike. Are you brothers?” Zelda took a sip of her tea. Her thin hands shook as she brought the cup to her mouth.
Link agreed, “That’s what I was thinking. You guys all have blonde hair and blue eyes.” He eyed Legend. The pink strip on his hair was distinguishable and unusual.
“You do too,” Zelda giggled.
Link stroked his chin, “Oh, yeah.”
Time shifted in his chair uncomfortably.
Sky shrugged, “Well, this is actually kind of-“
“I’m Link,” Time pointed to himself. “He’s Link and he’s Link.”
Link and Zelda blankly stared at him. Then, with humorous expressions of confusion on their faces, they turn to face one another. It was odd how synchronized they were.
“We all come from a different time. A different Hyrule or land, with different affairs, and people,” Time explained.
Links and Zelda exchanged glances while maintaining an open mouth. To any other person, everything probably does not make sense nor would anyone believe Time. Zelda shaked her head in amazement when Link mouths something to her, chuckling. But these were heros. Anything is possible at this point.
Sky's face twitched with a smile. He stood up. To support Times' case, he unwrapped the sheet from the Master Sword and presented it. The purple hilt reflected on Link’s face. His childish look dropped and he looked at the sword with a red face.
Time continued, “The only thing we have in common is our existence. We share the same spirit or destiny.”
It was silent. Then…
Zelda jumped to her feet and slapped her hands down on the table. The tea splattered on the surface. The sudden burst caused Legend almost tipped backwards from his chair. Sky coughed the tea that went down the wrong way. Link sat still. His cheeks lost color. His eyes went blank.
“Is this true!?” Zelda whipped out a notebook and flipped through the pages. “ Skyward bound, adrift in time, or steeped in the glowing embers of twilight!” She looked across at the three heroes seated in front of her. “May I ask? What are-“
Zelda went rigid. Her already pale face immediately became even paler. She dropped her notebook to the floor to immediately pull out a handkerchief from her pocket. As soon as she brought it to her mouth. Coughs ferociously erupted from her. The coughs were harsh and raspy, far from any regular sounding ones. Link frantically stood up and placed a hand on her back. He took a hold of her tea and brought it to her mouth. She spat some more hacks before grabbing the tea and downing the entire cup.
“You’re okay,” Link said just above a whisper, like this was a normal occurrence. He poured more tea into her glass. He had a sudden intense focus on her. Goosebumps unrolled across his skin.
Sky’s cheeks became white and his eyes were focused. “Is everything alright?
Zelda wiped her mouth, “Yes, I’m fine. " She wheezed.
We have a potion if you need one,” Legend said with bother.
She waved her hand. “No, no. That won’t work on me. I’m alright,” She gave a rueful smile.
“Are you sure?” Sky interjected. His hand froze mid air. He was too jarred to remember to move. That was not a cough from a fever or a flu. That was violent.
“Yes, yes. Thank you,” Zelda sat back down.
Link gave a shameful smile, but it dropped as soon as he turned away from Zelda.
She used a handkerchief to her mouth as she continued to hack a little to clear her throat. Link could only avert his gaze. When she was in this state, he felt useless.
He yearned to make her feel better. He’d do anything, even if it was just for a second. As a distraction he reached across the table with his left hand to gripped the hilt of the sword. Sky looked up at him.
“May I?” Link asked.
Time was taken aback. There was a lack of hesitation and more eagerness when he took hold of the sword. Sky was silent with wide eyes. He was motionless. It's peculiar. For some reason, he felt the sword would reject him.
“May I?” He asked again.
Sky nodded.
He pulled the sword from the scabbard awkwardly. He swung the sword. His slashes were ungainly and his stabs were stiff. Legend cringed. It was like he knew the forms, but didn’t know how to perform them.
“Yep, that’s definitely the real thing, Zelda,” He slid the sword back in the scabbard. He picked up her notebook and pen and handed it to Zelda.
She smiled and her cheeks became flushed a little.
Time sensed an impediment in his throat. The buoyancy, the noise, the scars, the castle, it made his head pound. Was he confused? There was a ringing in his ear. He found himself rubbing his temples to make it go away, but it persisted. He was just a farmhand. Yet, he’s here. What sensation was this?
He didn’t think he’d have to go through this again. Was he dreaming? He felt a little dizzy. The Master Sword blinded his eye. Everything felt confusing. Everything felt hot. So hot he needed to rip his armor off.
“Can we please get to the issue here?” He rubbed his eyes.
The room became silent as everyone focused on Time. It was as though the people in their immediate vicinity had vanished, yet they carried on with their lives. Not even their voices could be heard.
“Monsters around Hyrule are tainted with something. Whatever it is, it's not good. And I know the journey will be strenuous because, for some forsaken reason, we heroes are needed to work together,” Time’s eyes were intense and engrossed. “For you, we have journeyed across time.”
Legend turned his head to the floor as he tapped his fingers.
Zelda gulped.
Time stared at the sword. Evil's Bane. The sword represented a bad omen to come. Once that sword is pulled, there is always an inevitable prophecy that follows it.
He then focused on Link's brooded eyes, “You need to come with us. We need your help to prevent whatever is going to arise. That’s why we were brought here. ” It was hard not to let his eyes drift to Link’s scars. His severed arm.
Link paused. Then his lips moved, “Do these monsters have black blood?”
“Yes! And they’re incredibly strong and abnormally intelligent,” Sky exclaimed. “So, what do you say?”
The answer was obvious. Time knew what to expect. No chosen hero could decline. But, he found himself gnawing at his lip in anticipation.
Link licked his lips. His eyes on his cup of tea. “I..” he hesitated. “I don’t think I should.”
There was silence.
Sky chuckled in disbelief, “If it’s because of your condition, you don’t-“
“It’s not because of my ‘condition’,” Link barked. “I have other reasons.”
He shot Sky a look. One that forewarned Sky that talking about his "condition" any longer would not be appropriate.
“Well I’m sure we can work out whatever it is. I mean is there trouble, we can help.“
“I don’t know,” Link sighed with annoyance.”I just can’t go. Okay?”
His voice spoke with an attitude. One that made Legend clench his teeth. It felt like an attack on his own presence. He wasn’t here to deal with this nor should have to.
“What do you mean you ‘just can’t go’?’” He straightened his back on his seat. His eyebrows creased downwards. “You do not have a choice. You were born and created to do this.”
Link looked down, “I do have a choice. I just… I can’t go now. It’s too soon. I can't leave my people. I can't leave-” His voice was quiet before he was interrupted.
“Uh, yes you can. It’s too soon for all of us and we still left all ‘our people’!” Legend’s voice was grutturaled. “You think I want to be here? You think any of us do?! You can’t just avoid this!”
“I would go if I could but-“
“Then go!”
Link gritted his teeth, “It’s more complicated than that.“
“Bullshit! This is all bullshit! You-”
Time placed an arm on Legends chest, urging him to back away. “Check yourself, Legend. We can talk this through,” His voice is calm and stern.
“Hold your tongue, Old Man! If he chooses not to come, then I’m not going either!” Legend pushed Time’s arm and stomped away.
Link looked guilty and small. Like he wasn’t going to change his mind. Time clenched his fist. Legend was being hostile, even embarrassing. But, was he wrong?
Sky aggressively sighed, squeezing the bridge of his nose, “Link. I really need you to think about this. My friend might’ve been rude and annoying, but he isn’t wrong.”
He then left towards Legend before Link could say anything.
Time stood there for a moment taking in what had happened. He didn’t know what to feel. How to react to the situation. Was he mad? Who knows. If he was, who would he be mad at?
Finally he took a deep breath.
“Link.” He sat down, “I can tell, you’ve exceeded as a hero.”
He looked into Link's eyes and… nothing. There was nothing there. He had an unexplained feeling of disappointment.
“I can understand why you would never even want to look at a sword, but…” Time paused. “…you are needed. The Goddesses see you as worthy. Your job isn’t done yet. Malevolent and danger across history is prospering. It’s worse than we can imagine. If we don’t do something, you and everyone will be in grave danger. I’m here for my family. My friends. I’m here for the people and their families. I cannot sit while evil arises knowing I can do something about it.”
Link refused to even look at Time. His face was written with guilt, but Time still held hope. Hope that his speech did something. It did do something. He was going to catch up to the others with Link. Give Link a nickname. They were going to be sucked in a portal together to meet even more future companions.
“I don’t know. I’m just sorry. I cannot go with you. It has nothing to do with me. I have to stay here,” Link's voice was quiet, yet assertive.
Time sat there. That’s all he was able to do. His face became hot. His mouth, dry. The ringing in his ear was sounding louder.
Zelda placed her hand on Link’s hand.
“Link, maybe you should think about it. This is a big deal,” Her voice was fragile, either from her coughing fit or her gentle nature.
“Zelda,” He clenched his fist. “I’ve made up my mind.”
She remained silent, but took her hand off of Link’s.
Time felt as if his core was fracturing. He was suddenly overcome with exhaustion. His armor felt too heavy and his one eye became heavy. Just a moment ago, his mind was racing like the Goron’s down Death Mountain. Where did it come from?
He smiled with only his mouth, “I understand. It was a pleasure meeting you two.” He weakly shook Link and Zelda’s hand.
Slowly, he stood up and turned around. He trekked away before stopping. He stood there as Link and Zelda watched. He then turned around.
He understood Link. He couldn’t force him.
“By the way. Since we’re all named Link, I go by Time. Legend is the one wearing the hat, and Sky's the one holding the Master Sword,” Time said with craft. “Remember them.”
Chapter 4: Ruins
Summary:
Sky and Legend have a small fight and Sky gets angry.

Castle Town was like a graveyard. The atmosphere completely changed once one withdrew from the Lookout Landing. Sky brushed his fingers across the ruins. A town that supposedly sounded of roars of people, now just the echoes of crows. His throat felt heavy. The castle had fallen, of course the town would too.
Back in Sky’s home, the newly discovered surface was animated, lively. Even the Skyloft had been peaceful. Is this what comes from the land? Nothing but death? Is this what years of this never ending cycle does?
It was almost like he could faintly smell blood and rot upon the smell of ash and an ancient book. He could smell it anywhere. He could smell the hatred and sadness. It could only come from one thing: Demise. It was an unforgettable smell.
Who would do such a thing? Sky thought to himself. But it was obvious. It was some type of malediction. He buried his eyes in his hands. He even glued shut his eyes for extra precautions. It was painful to see. He’d wish he could mute out his senses for just a moment.
When he opened his eyes, a shine upon the dull mount. He scratched his head as followed the brightness. There he saw a plaque with an unfamiliar language. Bouquets of flowers surrounded the dreary plaque. Perhaps a memorial? A gravestone? A mass grave?
“Where did the Hero of Legend go?” Sky held his hands close to his chest. His heart thumped violently against his ribcage. He was here for Legend. Not for this.
Legend was hunched over, leaning on a single wall. The wall weakly stood as everything around it had crumbled a long time ago. He stabbed a dagger into the ground repeatedly without ever acknowledging Sky’s presence. Sky stood next to him, leaning against the wall.
Legend was the first descendant Sky met. Because of that, he was somewhat the most important to Sky. He was the first proof Sky had that implied he could do more and be more.
“Why are we still here? Why was I dragged into this?” Legend clenched his fists until they turned white. His voice sounded more desperate than vexed. Almost like he was begging.
Sky knew the answer to this question.
“We have a…”
A curse. Cursed by Demise himself.
“…duty.”
“Get us out of here,” Legend’s voice was hoarse. He continued to stab into the dry mud. Tearing a hole in the Earth each time.
Sky has only known him for no more than five days, he’s never seen him angry. Irritated and impolite, yes, but never angry. What happened with Link wasn’t anger. Sky knew what true anger was. That was not it.
“How?”
“I don’t know. Make a portal or something. I can’t stand being here,” Legend stopped stabbing his dagger and instead looked at his reflection through the unpolished blade.
Sky looked at the ruins then turned his head to the Lookout Landing. The Lookout Landing and the ruins were right next to each other, but had an incomparable atmosphere.
“I can't make a portal. Sorry,” He shrugged. He himself didn’t even know where these portals came from.
He furrowed his brows.
“Look,” He sighed. “I understand this can be frustrating, but the outburst wasn’t necessary,“ he frowned. “How will he join us now that he has a bad impression of us?”
Legend knew who he was talking about. Sky felt like he couldn't just leave Link alone. As the first chosen one, he felt he had such a big responsibility. He must lead and guide the others. He must gather his descendants and lead them to victory once more. Not to slack off or sit around and be lazy.
“He didn’t want to join us before,” Legend raised his voice. “This is not my fault. Blame Time for how he went about explaining things. He was being too authoritative.”
He scrunched his nose and gritted his teeth. Just thinking about it gave him a displeasing feeling.
Sky huffed.
“Time did fine. We could’ve convinced him if you just kept your cool. Next time, just let Time and I do the talking. Alright?”
Legend turned his eyes to meet Sky’s. His eyebrow furrowed in disgust. Then Sky felt it. A sharp electrical current running through his body, giving him shivers. It felt almost magnetic and divine. He only felt this one other time with Time.
“Next time? Do you know when to stop talking?” Legend’s voice was quiet yet fierce.
“What?”
“All you do is run that big mouth of yours and make things worse,” He said through his teeth.
Sky froze as he was stunned for a moment. He then scrunched his nose, “You’re… why do you act like this?”
Legend shrugged.
“You’re such a prick!” Sky exclaimed, trying to offend Legend in some sort of way.
“Good,” Legend’s voice cracked.
Sky turned around with a hostile huff. He stomped away. It felt like steam was coming out of his ears. Why couldn’t Legend ever be friendly? Why did he push away? Why was everyone so disrespectful? Anger ran through his veins, but he took aggressive breaths to calm down.
He stomped towards the plaque. Everyone acted the way they wanted. No one wanted to do their duty as a hero. No one wanted to help, to treat people with kindness, to work together, and show self-possession. He felt like a boiling pot of water. Anyone who would come near would burn.
He dropped to the floor in front of the plaque. His hand gripped the edge until his fingers turned white. The petals of the surrounding flowers were beginning to wrinkle a little. He could tell that the plaque was beginning to collect dirt and grime.
He yearned for the smell of the grass back home. For the soft texture of his Zelda back home. He missed her compassion. Even though he had changed so much, she still didn’t change the way she adored him. She was the only one that ever made him feel good about himself.
This is what comes of this lousy land. Dead souls and demise all for a stupid plaque. Sure there may be pretty words on it, but in the end it’s pointless. There was nothing beautiful about this. This Hyrule was distasteful.
Chapter 5: Dinner
Summary:
Link is annoyed.
Link takes a liking to Time.
Zelda makes an appearance for a brief moment.
Link and Time have dinner.

I’m struggling how I summarize these chapters. Sorry for grammar mistakes. I didn’t read over this chapter as well as the others cause I’m lazy.
Chapter Text
Link laid shirtless down on the nursing bed. His long golden hair spread freely on the pillow. Purah was bent over, inspecting what was left of his arm. She unwrapped the bandages and sighed.
The clock ticked.
He’s been through these appointments plenty of times. It was a daily thing. Sometimes once a day, sometimes up to three. This was as normal as brushing his hair.
Purah opened a bottle and rubbed a yellow cream on his nub. What was left of his arm was a dark black, gloom damage. It spread to the collar to his shoulder blades to inching up his neck. His damaged skin was shriveled up like a date.
“Looks like this blend is uh… helping a little,” Purah avoided Link’s eye contact.
She proceeded to poke his arm nub. He turned his face away from her. He clenched his fist and gritted his teeth. He hated when she did this. He surpressed a flinch as it felt that he was getting multiple electric shocks throughout his body from the contact with his stump.
“Do you feel this in your arm?”
“What arm?” Link smiled. He was beginning to sweat.
Purah rolled her eyes in amusement, “Linky, you know what I mean.”
Link turned his head to face the ceiling. His smile dropped.
“I still feel nothing,” He answered.
“Feeling nothing? Well at least you can save money on some winter gloves,” Purah joked. She sighed in disappointment right after though.
Link snorted.
He lifted up his torso. Purah tried numerous times to repair his skin from the gloom damage, but to no avail. Link reasoned that Purah must be extremely irritated over something that might not be under her control. He detested situations such as these.
She picked up a clipboard. She chewed her pen and as her eyes scanned the paper.
“Have you been feeling drowsy lately?”
“No.”
She wrote something on the paper.
“Any chest pain?”
“No,” Link exhaled.
She wrote something on the paper.
“Any trouble breathing?”
“No,” His voice was grating.
She wrote something on the paper.
“Any trouble-“
“No, Purah” Link interrupted. “I’m fine.”
His voice was almost demanding.
Purah slouched and stared at Link. She put up a serious face, but her voice cracked a little bit. Link sat at the edge of the bed, looking down at the floor. His arm rested on his leg, while his other just-
“I’m sorry, Purah, but…” Link’s voice trailed off. “It’s going to be the same answers everyday.”
“Linky,” Purah smiled slightly. “It’s Zelda, isn’t it?”
Link breathed out, “My condition is so insignificant compared to hers, Y’know? I’m fine.”
“But I don’t know what this could do to your body and I just…” Purah trailed off.
Tick, tick, tick.
“So?” Link muttered.
“I get worried.”
He rubbed his head. His breathing sounded so loud in his ears. His lungs felt small, but his heart felt too big for his chest. Purah remained quiet. Even though at times she couldn’t be serious, she knew when to be.
“I’m fine, Purah.”
The room felt cold and mute. It was as if white noise just consumed everything in Link’s ears. He got Zelda back, Hyrule is being rebuilt, people are expanding their vocations, but it didn’t matter to him. Everything, the world feels like it’s still on edge. Even after the Calamity and after the floating islands appeared and disappeared.
Stomp, stomp.
The door slammed open causing a glass cup to crash to the ground. Link and Purah both turned their heads towards the door. Link jumped to his feet in a grounding stance.
“Two moblins spotted one hundred feet from northeast of the front gate,” Burwar yelled. He was the knight that was posted at the gates of the Lookout Landing. He wasn’t doing a good job hiding his fear.
Link slipped his shirt back on and quickly grasped his rusted sword resting against the bed. He pushed through Burwar without a warning. His mind was on one thing: he and only him is going to kill those moblins.
“Withdrawal all knights,” Link ordered. He trampled down the stairs.
“B-but-“ Burwar stuttered.
“Linky! Don’t be reckless! You’re not in the condition to fight!” Purah yelled from the door. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead.
Link scowled. How pathetic.
“I’ve killed the reincarnation of the Demon King and hatred itself. I'm sure I can handle two moblins,” he answered sarcastically with venom.
He was the strongest of the land. No one can defeat him. Not even the evilest form. Zelda relied on him. He needed to stay strong for her. He needed to keep that trust and that dependableness. Everyone looked up to him. He trained inexperienced people all around Hyrule. He was the one people strive to be.
“Linky! Come back!” Purah pleaded.
Link ignored. He was going to do this. He made it past the gates. As he ran, the cold air pierced his skin through his thin shirt, but his skin was moist from sweat.
The sun dipped below the horizon. Warm colors decorated the sky, slowly embracing the night. It had been a long day.
Link was flooded with nostalgia when he heard the moblins cry. It was a while since he had engaged in combat. They squirmed like they were begging for their lives. Wait-
That’s not right. Why did they sound as if they were dying? He moved his legs faster than his lungs could keep up.
A shadowy form in gleaming armor towered over a pair of crippled moblins behind the sun. A giant blade descended with grace upon the moblins, effortlessly slicing them through the bone with no resistance. Blood bled black beneath the figure's boots. His sword dripped of black blood. For just a moment, Link stared in awe. He strived to be like that some day.
That is, until he found that his intended victims were killed. Making him wrinkle his nose and his hands clenched.
“What are you doing?” He breathed out.
The form turned his head. Link easily recognized the striking markings that were formed beneath the figure's eye and forehead. It was one of the hero’s trying to recruit him! His eye had a scar going through. It looked like it was sliced. It must be hard to fight with only one eye. Harder to see where the enemy is attacking from.
“Is something the matter?” He answered. His one eye is sharp and momentous. There was something fierce in it. He was probably mad at Link for refusing his earlier offer. All of a sudden, Link became insecure.
He blinked. He snapped out of his thoughts. His frustration came back when he saw the black blood reach the sole of his boots.
Of course something was the matter. He killed Link's targets. His possible vindication. This was his chance and it was gone in an instant to a man in adulthood. He’s too old that his joints probably ache when he walks up a flight of stairs. He stopped himself from chuckling in amusement with his thoughts.
What did the man with the Master Sword say his name was? Or his nickname? It was his hero’s name.
“You’re Link, right?” Link narrowed his eyes.
The man sheathed his sword, “Yes, but you can call me Time.”
Link had to admit, he looked badass. His armor was clean and proud. The scar that striked across his eye made him look bold and courageous. The sword was a giant that swung with one hand. He could tell it was more than just a plain sword. His blonde hair was neat, even after killing two moblins. Even the stupid nickname was cool. His perfectness made him clench his jaw.
But he couldn’t be angry at him even if he really wanted to. Especially not after killing the remnants of Ganondorf. He meant good and that’s all that mattered.
“Please, Time,” Link shook his head. “Don’t go off killing things by yourself or without tellin’ anyone.”
“I apologize for that,” Time bit his lower lip.
Link places his hand on his hip, “Y’know, I could’ve killed those things myself.”
Time’s pupil glanced at Link's severed arm for just half a second, “I wouldn’t doubt it.”
Link found this amusing. Did Time doubt him? He took one look at Time’s eye and was almost surprised he killed the moblins with one eye. Would he be surprised if Link was able to fight with one arm?
Link started to feel the cold fall air against his skin and he shivered. A sharp stabbing feeling stretched across his gloom-damaged skin, but refused to show any indication of his pain. Because it didn’t hurt. It was fine. He’s felt pain before and this was not pain.
“You and your friends came at an interesting time,” Link sighed.
“Have we now?” Time raised in brows. He wiped his sword with a cloth.
Ugh, this was annoying! What was he thinking? He spoke with such a neutral conscience..
“I know what you're gonna say. If you came a few months earlier, I probably would’ve joined you. I’m not able to go now. It’s not me, it’s…” he furrowed his eyebrows as he trailed off.
“I wasn’t going to say anything,” Time said.
Link examined Time's face. He pondered whether Time observed his eyes falling on his tattoos instead of his eyes.
Time nodded. His face didn’t show any emotion and indication of what he was thinking about. He was probably mad or annoyed. When compared to the others Link met, he didn't seem to talk much. Link liked that. He didn’t feel as judged.

Zelda appeared in the distance before Link and Time could pass the Lookout Landing gates. Link stopped abruptly. His forehead furrowed and he had a thin lip. Time took one look at his face.
Zelda began sprinting towards them. She lost her footing a couple of times before she wrapped her thin arms around Link. Link grunted as she crashed into him. Quickly, he wrapped his arm around her tightly and sensually.
She let go and clutched her hands on his shoulders. “Link! You can’t go running off like that. I don’t want to be woken up being told you ran off doing god knows what!”
Her voice cracked and it was heavy. Her adrenaline faded and now she was overcome by emotion. Her eyes became watery and her nose red. She had waited for Link with anxiety.
“What if something happened!? I’m not in the best shape to help or protect you! At least don’t do that without reinforcements!” She cried.
Link took her hand in his and brushed his thumb over her boney fingers. He felt like he failed her. She shouldn’t have the responsibility to protect him nor even worry. She was healthy just a few months ago. Her skin was warmer and flushed. She had more fat and muscle. She was active and energetic. Now, her skin’s always fridged, lips are thin, her ribs were protruded. She could never eat much. Not even her favorite, a fruit cake.
But even then, Link remembered, something was always eating at her. She would suffer through long, agonizing minutes of staring at the castle until he waved a hand in front of her eyes. When they would pause for lunch, she would pick at her skin, and occasionally she would chew her nails until they bled. Link tried to divert her attention each time he saw her, but he knew it was ineffective. He had the impression that there was nothing he could do.
When Link let her down once more a few months ago, her condition became worse. He was unable to respond in time to save her. At the time, he was too weak to take on Ganondorf. The Master Sword broke in his hands. Zelda would have never transformed into a dragon and so ill if he had merely caught her.
His hands became shaky, so he let go of hers before she could notice. “I don’t need protection. I’m here for you, Zelda. I’m okay. I’ll always be okay,” Link gave a plastic smile.
“I know. Link, but I get so worried. You know, right? Especially now. I just get so, so worried,” Her voice was weak, but refused to let herself get so emotional. She didn’t need to be so dramatic. Not after what she put Link through.
Link placed his palm on her cheeks. It feels like his whole structure breaks down when he sees her like this. He feels weakest like this. He wants to take away her pain. He’d rather feel the pain of Gloom engulfing his body for eternity if it could just take Zelda’s pain away for ten minutes. But he was never able to. Not back then and not now.
“Don’t worry about me. Don’t,” Link wrapped his arm around her again. This is when he wished he had his other arm the most. He couldn’t fully engulf Zelda in a hug. It was a fragile hug. A lame excuse for one. If someone were to grab her, he wouldn’t be able to pull her away as quickly. It was his job to worry.
Zelda broke off the hug and took a deep breath, “I can’t.” She gripped the side of her pants and brushed her palm against her forehead.
She moved her eyes to Time. Then it happened again, the electric feeling. Time felt it start from the back of his head, down his spine, to his arms, then up to his toes. He shivered as he glanced down to his fingers. They tingled with the urge to do something. Anything. It was similar to the feeling as he held the Master Sword.
“Thank you, Time,” She swallowed. She took Time’s hand into hers. “Thank you for being there for Link.”
Time blinked, “Oh. Of course, I didn’t do much.”
“I don’t care,” She somberly smiled.

Link placed a hot steamy plate of rice with poultry in front of Time. It smelled delightful. Time’s mouth watered and he clung onto his fork. At this point, he condones his armor and sword to the corner of the room. Link placed a plate in front of himself and sat down.
They were in some building at the lookout landing. They were alone in a room with a chimney and a cooking pot. Time hadn’t eaten all day. One would expect a group of traveling hero’s would have sustainable food, but Time soon found out Sky and Legend lived off of the apples from a tree.
“You can eat,” Link smiled. He noticed the way Time intensely stared at the meal like someone was going to take it. “These are only leftovers, so it doesn’t taste as good.”
“No, it’s fine” Time’s voice was light. “Thank you.”
Link smiled wider. He put his hair in a low sloppy ponytail. Hair strands hung loose that didn't fit into the ponytail. His fringes were draped over his forehead.
The cuisine was mouthwatering. Time's hunger just enhanced the already delicious meal. The food not only satisfied Time's hunger but also brought Malon to memory. With every bite, he was more aware of how much he missed Malon. Now he really needed her. Now he was by himself.
Link slowly ate through his food compared to Time. He held the fork fumblingly in his left hand. As Time already worked through most of it in just minutes.
“Do your friends need anything to eat?” Link hesitantly said. He probably didn’t want to talk to them now. Considering how they acted.
Time froze. He placed down his fork. He didn’t even think about the others. Where were they? What were they doing? They can take care of themselves if they’re hungry. In actuality, he didn't want to be joined by them. He had convinced himself that the others were alright,
“They’re okay,” Time picked up his fork.
He swallowed a knot in his throat. He felt guilty for not feeling guilty. They continued to eat in silence. Link served more rice on his plate as he scarfed down the rest of his plate. Link barely touched his food and just watched Time with content.
“Um,” Link tapped his fingers.
Time looked up from his plate, “Yes?”
Link looked away. He had a puerile look in his eyes. They were youthful.
“What happened to your eye?”
Time paused. Almost confused about the question. Only children ever ask about his eye. Even when he noticed adults glancing at his eye, they never asked. Nor did he think they cared to ask.
“I fought the moon,” Time smiled. This was something he’d always tell the children.
Link smiled back and scrunched his nose, “Nuh uh. What really happened?”
“Um, my own shadow attacked me,” Time stroked his chin.
“Shadow? Really?” Link snickered. “I’m honestly not surprised, anything could happen!”
Time noticed Link’s burn scars crinkled at the end of his eye as he smiled. He sighed.
“Okay, I’ll tell you the truth only if you tell me something,” He took a big bite of meat.
“So you were lying?” Link squinted his eyes. He gave a joking suspicion to Time.
But that was before he paused for a moment. Then he replied.
“Sure.”
Time rested his chin on his palm. “It’s a little unexciting. A pig attacked me when I was younger.”
Link leaned into his seat, “That's it?”
“Just a silly brawl between a porker and I,” Time gave a relaxed smile. It was odd thinking that the beast that gave him the scar never existed. There was never proof it never happened.
Link looked down at his food, almost like he was disappointed. His food stopped steaming when he picked up his fork and picked at his food.
“How did you learn how to cook so well?” Time asked. He avoided any personal questions,
Link blinked at Time like he was almost surprised anyone would ask him that. Why wouldn’t people ask him? His food was fantastic. Wasn’t very common for a swordsman to know how to cook let alone cook so heavenly.
His eyes shined. Like he had a sudden burst of excitement that he was quietly expressing. “You wanna know how I learned how to cook?”
Time crinkled his eye, “Yes, you demonstrate fine talent. I’m curious”
“Well,” Link tipped his seat back. “I once stumbled into an old man’s cabin and stole his cookbook. It was an old cookbook from a century ago. They don’t have many of those anymore,” He calmly chuckled.
“That sounds like something I’d do when I was younger.” Time’s voice was quiet.
He stiffened at the thought of his old self. He was so innocent and full of hope. He once believed that everything in the world mirrored the life he led in the forest. He had no idea about anything. People were harsh in the real world. People were depressed and craved retribution. Regardless of the number of times he tried to help, his efforts were ineffective. He eventually turned into the people he attempted to help after everything that had occurred to him. An angry and vengeful person. But for what purpose is retaliation intended? What is the source of his anger? Now, after all this time, there was nothing. All he felt was despondency. He was no one. Just an ordinary farmhand.
He thought that being just a farmhand was alright, but now, he wasn’t so sure.
“Hm. I didn’t really understand stealing was wrong at the time. But I don’t think that the man minded,” Link paused for a moment. He bit his lip, “I think he was happy, actually, that I was able to make use out of it. More than he was able to. He was a very kind man.”
Time took a small deep breath. He started to sense the gloomy atmosphere. He wished for it to go away.
He took in a spoonful of food, “So, you got this recipe from the cookbook?”
“Yes and no. I made some of the recipes until a fire-breathing lizalfo attacked me and burned the thing,” he chuckled. “I was bummed at first, but it was good since it allowed me to experiment on cooking different recipes.”
Time lightly chortled, “Great example of finding the brighter side of things.”
Link snapped his fingers, “Exactly! Most of the time, hardship is a necessary part of becoming successful.”
Time raised his brows, “Well said. But I am surprised, are you saying you weren’t good at cooking before?”
“Of course not! There were days where I used to eat dubious food all the time,” he exclaimed. “I’d even gag at times! I was hopeless! .”
He laughed. He leaned back, a distant look in his eyes as memories of his survival flooded his mind. Time could see it through his boyish eyes.
Time chewed his lip.
“I’m glad I met you after,” he took a bite. “I wouldn’t have eaten such delicious cuisine.”
“Thanks, I appreciate it, but,” Link inhaled. “I wish I met you earlier, Time.”
As Time heard his nickname slip effortlessly from Link's mouth, he leaned forward. Link spoke in a weak, almost frantic manner. Yet strange and deliberate. Time did not say anything. He had no idea what Link was getting at or how to answer.
Tick, tick, tick.
Link tapped his fingers, “Could you tell me, what happened to you?” He bowed his head. “I always felt like I was able to connect with you.”
No one had asked him that before. Not even Malon. No one had a reason to. He felt numb for a moment. His palms became sweaty and his heart pounded. He wasn’t ever prepared for a question like this. He was confused. This was the first time he had ever met Link, yet Link talked to him like they’d known each other on a personal level.
Link felt a sudden stinging agony shoot through his stump, clenching his teeth. Wincing, he immediately grasped the painful region without saying anything. The grip his hand had was intense and harsh.
Time’s head shot up. His eyebrows furrowed. Perhaps Link recently lost his arm. Maybe it was still a healing wound. He watched him in silence, a gentle empathy growing within him as he saw what he faced. His gaze was filled with compassion and pity as he realized how vulnerable he seemed.
He recalled earlier. Zelda’s weak frame, her bony hands, the way her ribs protruded, her violent coughs, and the melancholy look on her eyes. The lifeless castle. It sat in ruin. Everything was a misfortune.
Link noticed Time's worried expression. He released his hold on his stump softly and let out a trembling breath. His expression, just a moment ago, was completely plastered with distress, now amused. He gave a toothy smirk, but Time’s lip was in a thin line.
“Sorry ‘bout that,” He said. “ ‘m okay.”
A pondering look crossed Time’s face. He was left in a reflective pause, unsure of what to do next, as the weight of revelation and the fear of what would come after tore at him.
“I’ve become a fraud,” He declared.
Link just stared.
Everything was flawless in Time's Hyrule. There was a strong queen who commanded the castle to stand tall. Castle Town was buzzing. Monsters were few and far between. Only perfection and serenity. So why did he feel like an artifice?
“I get it,” Link smiled.
He said it in a way like he understood Time. That he knew what he meant and was able to connect, but he couldn’t. No one could understand Time. His situation was unique. Not Legend nor Sky nor any other hero.
“It’s late,” Link said. “I’ll show you where to sleep.”

Chapter 6: Stars

Legend and Zelda have a Q&A. Legend is having a crisis.

Chapter Text
Legend laid under the stars at night. He used his arms as a pillow. For what seemed like an hour and a half, he tapped his fingers each time he counted a star. It was what was able to keep his mind at peace for some time.
Beside him, the fire cracked. He put his feet toward the fire to keep them warm. Sky was on the other side of the flame, fast asleep.
They were in the middle of the ruins of Castle Town. They had decided to just stay there for the night and figure out a way to leave the next day. Then there was Time. He just disappeared somewhere. Maybe he was able to leave? Lucky bastard.
Suddenly, there was a crack, so sharp that Legend froze. His hand instinctively closed around his sword's hilt. In an instant, he had assumed a wide stance, his blade poised to strike at any time.
Then it was silent. Except for the sound of the fire cracking and the bugs chirping.
A calm figure in the shadows inched towards him. He tightened his grip and gritted his teeth. When the face of the figure emerged into the firelight, he relaxed the muscles. It was Zelda. She had an awkward nervous smile on her face. Her face was devoid of any sign of fear. Legend lowered his sword.
“I apologize,” She chortled.
Legend huffed and puckered his lips. He turned his head towards Sky. He was still sound asleep. Of course.
“What are you doing here so late?” Legend asked with irritation. He sat down.
Zelda followed and took out her notebook. “I was told you were out here. I saw your fire and I thought we could talk.”
Legend shook his head and waved off his hand.
“If you provide me with information, I'll give you a place to stay.”
Legend scoffed, “Really? Well for your information I don’t need a place to stay.”
He slept in much worse places and he didn’t need to rely on these people for anything.
Zelda smiled. Her grin was so warm and inviting. Especially with the way her large eyes wrinkled and her teeth were visible. “I’ll also provide a nice warm meal?”
He was weak. That honestly sounded amazing. He hadn’t eaten anything but apples and that didn’t do much. He couldn’t cook well nor did he have the ingredients to do so. It was what he needed right now. Just the thought of actual cooking made his mouth water. He hated how he gave up so easily.
“Fine,” Legend huffed. “But if I don’t want to answer, do not push me.”
“Deal!” Zelda exclaimed before slamming his hands to her mouth. Her eyes looked past Legend to Sky.
Legend exhaled, “Don’t worry. You will not wake him. I’d worry about monsters more.”
Zelda cackled. She took out a pen and flipped through the pages of her notebook.
“So first question. Where did you come from?”
Legend stroked his chin for a moment. It was such a simple question, but it made him finally able to think about what had happened the past five days. Even at night, he felt he didn’t have the time to even think about it.
“I’m from Hyrule in a different time,” he sighed. “I live in a house with my best friend, Ravio.” He felt the need to mention the last part.
“How did you get here?” She scribbled in her notes.
Almost a week ago, a portal appeared,” Legend stared into space. “I stupidly walked in and I ended up with him,” He pointed to Sky. “Then the old man, then here.”
Zelda jotted stuff down in her notebook eagerly. Considering what she had gone through, it wasn’t hard to believe him. She asked about specific details. Like about the portals, the black blooded monster, and a timeline of the past five days.
Legend only gave quick answers. He wouldn’t talk for more than a minute when answering a question. Zelda had to ask numerous questions as a result, attempting to obtain every little detail.
She chewed the end of her pen, flipping through her notes, reading what was written in the dim light of the fire. She paused on a page for a moment before speaking.
“I have heard of the Hero of the Sky and the Hero of Time, and even the Hero of Twilight, but never specifically about the Hero of the Legend,” Her voice was soft.
Legend laughed but not with delight, “Really? That rat bastard.” Even beyond the grave and history, he stole everything from him.
It stung his chest to hear that.
“Perhaps you come from a time after us?” Zelda questioned.
He fixed his gaze on nothing.
“I highly doubt it.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m the direct descendant of the true Hero of Legend: the Hero of Time.”
Zelda paused to think for a moment before replying, “I don’t understand.”
He sighed.
“Hundreds of years ago, the Hero of Time died before he could defeat the Gerudo king, Ganondorf. Hyrule fell into darkness. Everyone eventually got back on their feet, but nothing was ever truly the same.”
Zelda’s head flew up. Her big eyes wide. “What had happened to Hyrule during that time? What did Ganondorf do?”
He shrugged, “Dunno. Those were just legends passed down for generations.” His voice grew quiet yet serious and concentrated. “That was until I was born. You could say I am the failed legend reborn. I had to clean up all the shit left behind.”
Zelda hadn’t written anything down. Her face remained blank. Her fingers picked at the dry skin in her lips. It was as if she had gone unconscious with her eyes wide open.
“What ‘shit’ did you clean?” She finally replied. Her eyes glued to Legend like she might miss something he’d say.
He shrugged again, “Y’know. Killed a few bad guys.”
Zelda loathed the vague answers Legend gave. She was hungry for information. At this point she abandoned her notebook.
“Like who? What did they do?” She leaned closer. Her face was almost in close proximity with Legends. Her eagerness was almost alarming and frightening.
“I don’t know,” He gritted his teeth.
“But- but this doesn’t really make sense. You say the Hero of Time died-“
“I’ve told you enough,” His voice became defensive out of nowhere. That was his way of saying that answering those questions would have gone beyond his boundaries. That he has had enough.
She slouched and looked down. She hid her face that was bright red and hot. She got into eager moods that she was never proud of.
Legend sighed and rubbed his nape.
“Hey, uh, about that nice warm meal?”
“Oh, right. We made a deal. I forgot,” She still didn’t look Legend in the eyes.
Legend got up and doled out some dry dirt onto the flames. The Master Sword was positioned atop a sizable stone, possibly from a section of debris. After draping a white sheet over the sword, Legend crossed it over his chest.
Like a bag of potatoes, he snatched Sky and tossed him over his shoulder. Sky muttered, but he remained unconscious. Zelda trailed behind him as he headed towards the Lookout Landing.
They walked through the ruins. Zelda apologized. Legend nodded at her.
The guards at the gates were fast asleep. Their lack of experience at first was evident. Perhaps they haven’t seen the horrors of the world. That was a blessing.
As they got closer to a building, Zelda took out her keys. She opened the door to a dimly lit interior. She led him to the stairs. The floors were hardwood and creaked painfully as they stepped on each step. On the second floor, Legend was met with Time. He passed out on a bed. The typical furrow between Time's eyebrows were softened. He slept with peace. Legend wrinkled his nose and furrowed his brows at that. How could that bastard abandon them in the bitter cold? How could he abandon him to Sky?
Time's bed was divided from another bed by a nightstand. Across the room was another empty bed which Legend assumed was his own. He gently placed Sky on the bed next to Time’s. He picked up the Master Sword and rested it softly on top of the nightstand. Afterward, he removed Sky’s boots. Sky curled up like a small child. Legend sighed and turned his attention to Zelda. She smiled. He relaxed his face.
Her expression tightened abruptly. Her eyes squint for a moment, trying to control the reflex. Her shoulders hunch forward and her body tenses slightly as she discreetly puts her hand to her mouth. Legend knew what to expect, but he didn’t know how to handle it.
She strode down the stairs, then out the door. The sound of the door clicking shut reverberated throughout the house as she left Legend alone.
He stood for a brief while, tapping each finger with his thumb to count. He sighed before he walked to the stairs. He made it to the first step before he heard a mutter.
“Thanks, Lege,” Sky weakly voiced before he went back to loudly breathing again.
Legend turned to Sky, still limped and curled in the bed. Legend’s lips parted, like he was going to say something, but felt it wasn’t the right time. That bastard could’ve walked himself to the bed.
Eventually, he made it down the stairs.
On the other side of the front door, Zelda coughed, and Legend put his ear to the door to listen. Her hacks were aggressive and vexatious. His chest felt heavy and his forehead sweaty. He held off till she was done, then he turned the doorknob and forced the door open. Zelda stood there facing the door with her back. Wiping her mouth, she turned her head to look at Legend. She grinned. Legend frowned.
“That was a little embarrassing,” She said.
Legend stood next to her. He started to count the stars with his eyes.
“What’s wrong with you?” Legend asked. He was in a state of ambivalence.
Zelda played with her hair, “Certain circumstances. You’d understand. My body suffered a great transformation. I don't believe I will ever fully recover from it.”
Legend swallowed hard. She could never forget her suffering. It’s a constant.
“That’s what comes of this job. I do not pity you nor Link,” He glared into the dark sky.
God, he just wanted to leave. It was pointless being here. It was pointless to talk. Just take him to the next Hyrule.
Zelda gave a soft airy chuckle.
“Good. I’m far more sick of pity than I am sick.”
Legend flashed a hidden smile as he continued to count.
Zelda frowned a little after a while.
“Link pity’s me. Even though he tries to hide it from me,” She had said just above a whisper. Like she wanted him to hear it, but was too embarrassed to say it with confidence.
Legend bowed his head, partially regretting his previous words.
“Pity isn’t…” He sighed. “…a bad thing.”
What was he talking about? People's sympathy for him had enraged him. He remained loyal to Ravio because he had seen Legend for who he was and not for what he had gone through. He wanted to be like Ravio.
Maybe he didn’t want to hurt Zelda’s feelings.
Zelda started to walk, Legend followed.
“It is when people see you as weak and helpless,” she replied.
“Well then,” He uttered. “That’s not pity, that’s scorn.”
She tilted her head, “What is pity?”
“Compassion and empathy,” He answered
She faced him, “You don’t feel pity?”
Legend shrugged, “Why would I wish to endure mental anguish for other people? I worry about myself and myself only.”
Zelda nodded.
“I don’t believe that,” She said.
“What?” Legend squinted his eyes.
She grinned, “Years ago, I had an appointed knight. He didn’t talk much.”
Legend lifted an eyebrow, “So?”
She breathed out and continued, “I have become good at reading people. I don’t believe that about you.”
Legend scrunched his nose. His posture became tense and his face flushed, “Okay? Don’t believe me then. I don’t know what to tell you.”
Zelda nodded.
He tightened his jaw. He wasn’t feeling very hungry anymore.

Legend crept into the room where Time and Sky were sleeping. He dropped onto the only empty bed and sighed. The fatigue that had seeped into his bones was evident as he hunched. He unbuckled his sword and placed it against the wall. He threw his boots as well as his hat on the floor.
He snuggled under the covers. He was on a comfy bed and he was safe inside.
He shut his eyes and breathed. He tapped his fingers to thumb.
1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4
Sky’s breathing was so loud.
1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3…
His uncle's visage flickered for a brief moment.
He gasped frantically and opened his eyes. But, there was nothing but the wooden ceiling.
His heart began to pound suddenly. A pain shot through his chest. His heart was thumping so hard it seemed like his ribs were shattering. He clenched his collar, trying to ease the pain. His limbs were unsteady and weak. Under the covers, he cradled up. He squeezed his eyes shut, hurting. His finger joints throbbed and trembled.
This is what he was trying to prevent. Not because it hurt, but rather because he relished the pain.
He only felt this way when he thought about the people he had lost and missed so much it consumed him. This pain was the only thing he had left of them. Beautiful memories accompanied his sorrow. This pain came with his life he lived before he was this chosen hero. It came with the wonderful people he knew. In the absence of his suffering, he felt so lonely and he felt so guilty.
He was connected to what he had lost only by his own anguish and grudge.

I hope my intentions for Legend's characters is making more sense.

Chapter 7: Bow and Arrow

Time and Sky meet Purah.

Sky took a deep breath and clapped his hands together, “So!”
Legend crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. Time just sat on his bed in silence.
They sat on their beds with distance between each other. They were ready for the day. Time had his armor on. Legend and Sky slipped their boots on and buckled their sword around their chest.
“Getting Link to join our chain is the goal for today!” Sky exclaimed. He stood up and started to pace back and forth.
“Chain?” Time leaned forward and lifted a brow.
Sky turned to face Time with a smirk on his face. He explained, “We’re ‘linked’ together.” He locked his fingers together. He laughed. He probably thought of that days ago.
It was silent. How is one supposed to respond to that? Especially now.
“Y’know,” he smiled “Like a chain? We’re named Link?”
Legend dropped his head on his hands as he shook his head. Time did nothing but sit there and move his pupils from side to side. He smiled a little.
“That sounds so dumb,” Legend exhaled. It was like they were on a mission to test his patience. Yet deep down, he felt a hint of amusement from the audacity Sky had. He’d never admit it.
Sky lowered his eyebrows, “You guys are so fun,” he sighed. “What I think we should do is get Zelda on our side,” he began to pace again. “Of course Link wouldn’t trust us, especially after what happened yesterday, but he can be influenced by someone close to him.”
Time squinted his eyes and rubbed his finger on his chin. He was thinking through his thoughts. Link seemed comfortable with him yesterday. Link had tried to connect with him. Connection can be influential.
Legend stomped his foot in the ground. Everyone turned their attention to him. His hands were gripping his knees tightly.
“We are not doing anything to Zelda,” He declared. “Don't you think that is a little cruel? That’s like manipulation.”
He’s not sure if he could drag someone like Link and Zelda into this. After last night, he couldn’t do something like that. He just wanted to leave.
“Sky, I think the best we can do is leave them alone,” Time chimed in.
“What do you mean?” Sky slouched.
Time filled his lungs.
“We can’t force him to go.”
“Well I’m not forcing him,” Sky scrunched his nose. “I’m trying to make him rethink his decision.” He faced Legend and crossed his arms, “And this is not being cruel. I can’t give up on him. We can’t give up on him.”
Sky felt so strongly about this. He felt if he gave up on him, he’d betray
The room fell quiet. Everyone seemed to be in their heads. Thinking over their thoughts. Everything felt all mushed together. What is right and what is wrong? What’ll happen?
Sky scratched his head.
“Okay, I’m going to find Zelda. Legend? Time? Join me?” He raised his eyebrows.
Time stood up and walked over to Sky.
“I’ll go.”
He felt he should. Perhaps it’s to see Link again or maybe to see Zelda. He also wanted to keep Sky in check. He barely knew the guy. If he’s with Sky, maybe he can change his mind or ease his eagerness.
“Legend?” Sky questioned.
Legend glanced at Time then looked away, “I’m staying here.”
Sky waved his hand and rolled his eyes, “Whatever.”
He felt a small spark of rage enlight in him for just a moment. Legend was the most frustrating. He talked back, he knew how to get on his nerves, and never listened.
Sky and Legend stepped outside. In the morning sun, people were busy. Weird technology was being carried and studied around by people in uniform. Shops were open and eager for consumers. Sky didn’t know where to start.
He walked around, taking in sight. People were happy here. But just out those gates were ruins of a great tragedy that Sky can only imagine. How can anyone live like this?
“Excuse me!!” An enthusiastic voice yelled.
Sky glanced around. A woman with white hair and red glasses walked with grace up to them. She must be Sheikah. He stood up more straight and narrowed his eyes. The woman tapped her recorder into her hands.
“You must be Link,” the woman smiled as he faced Sky. She then looked over to Time, “And you must be Link!”
Time and Sky glanced at each other then back at the woman.
“Yes! And you are?” Sky replied.
“I am Purah, the director of the Lookout Landing. It is very much an honor to have you here,” She shook their hands with both of his hands.
Sky’s face brightened up. This is perfect. Getting comfortable with people is a great way to make connections. A great way to get Link to join.
“Thank you for having us here,” Time said. He was thankful. It was the best night he had since he left Malon.
Purah smiled.
“I am the Hero of the Sky, but you can call me Sky,” Sky pointed to himself then Time. “This is Time. He is the Hero of Time.”
Purah took hold of Sky’s hand. She shook it with a respectful aggressiveness, like she was trying to contain her excitement, but it wasn't a good job.
“It is an honor to meet you, Sky,” Purah said.
She then squinted her eyes at Time while smirking. Time turned behind him to make sure she was looking at him.
“Well, Time, you're so grown up!”
What’s that supposed to mean? Time thought.
“Thank you?” He shrugged. Was it a good or bad thing? What's that got to do with anything? Was he looking older than his age?
Purah took note of his confusion.
“What I’m saying is I know some of your tales. As for the Hero of the Sky, I am quite unfamiliar with your stories, but your name is not lost in history,” She laughed.
What is up with this? How come everyone keeps saying they know of the Hero of Time? It doesn’t add up since his expedition never happened. It was erased from time and history. Each time someone had brought it up, it made him feel a certain way he’s only felt once before. It irked him. It didn’t feel right.
He didn’t feel like a hero. He was never considered one. But he was aware that there was a hero in his blood that he had to acknowledge.
“I wonder how much time has passed,” Sky questioned. His speech was foggy. He was ancient. More ancient than Time. More ancient than anything right now. He perhaps knew and seen stuff no one else could ever know.
“Quite a while. Thousands of years, Chosen one,” Purah was amused.
Sky lowered his brows and slouched. He couldn’t imagine how many more hero’s there were. All this because he simply couldn’t finish his job correctly. All this because of a curse made pure hatred.
“So, it’s really been going on for that long?”
Purah put her hand on her hips.
“Come on, I’ll answer more questions if you help me with something,” She rolled her eyes in amusement.

They were in a room that was a complete mess. Papers were spread across every desk, chair, and spot on the floor. Books, pens, and weird gadgets were scattered. Purah stepped over to a dresser. She rummaged through it for a while.
Time and Sky looked around.
“Ah ha! Here it is!” Purah pulled out some weird gadget. It was a thin piece of metal that was the shape of a crescent moon. Attached to it was a hook. Then attached to the hook was a weird piece of metal. Sky tried to guess its use, but nothing came to mind. It was an interesting creation. “Come here Sky. You’re the closest size to Link.”
Sky carefully walked over to Purah, trying his best not to kick any of the books piled up and the paper that already had footprints all over.
He faced Purah, but Purah went behind him and placed the metal part of the gadget on the back of his neck. Sky raised his shoulders at the sudden surprise of the metal touching his neck. By his cheek, the hook stuck out. He was not expecting some type of experiment to happen to him, but he wasn’t going to bicker about it. He’s trying to gain her trust.
“You know how to use a bow and arrow, right?” Purah asked. She put her glasses on.
“Yeah? Why?”
Purah pulled out a bow and forced it in his right hand.
“It is impossible to shoot an arrow with only one arm,” Purah furrowed her brows. “Until maybe now.”
Sky and Time knew where this was going.
“I’m trying to design this instrument that can assist Link in shooting arrows”
Purah explained to Sky how to use the instrument, but Sky was getting his arms confused and he couldn’t keep his right arm steady. The arrow kept losing his place and falling straight to the floor.
Time watch with his arms crossed and intense eyes.
“Come on, it can’t be that hard. I thought you knew how to use a bow,” Purah said.
“I’m not left-handed so it’s a little difficult,” Sky puckered his lips.
“Okay, okay, this is fine. Link isn’t left-handed either, so he’ll just have to learn like you, but I need someone who is so I can see if this model can be able to withstand,” Purah sighed.
Time’s eyes lit up ever so slightly, “I’m left-handed.”
“Do you know how to use a bow?” Purah asked.
Time nodded. Purah wrapped the gadget around him and told him how to use it. Time hooked the arrow and bow string to the gadget. He stretched the bow and the gadget completely fell apart. It crumpled to the floor and the bow and arrow along with it. Time stood there for a moment. Did he break it?
Sky stood there dumbfounded with his mouth open. They are not giving off good first impressions.
Purah covered her face with her hand and whimpered in a dispirited way. She sat on her desk and slouched her back. It was quiet for a moment before sniffing noises came from Purah.
They glanced at each other when they realized what was happening. Time felt guilty. He felt like he disappointed Purah somehow. He knelt down to her face, but she was still covering herself. In the calmest voice, he apologized.
“Stop. Don’t apologize,” Purah took off her glasses and wiped her eyes. “I’m usually never like this.”
“But I broke your thing,” Time replied. He hurt her feelings and he didn’t need her to act like he didn’t do anything wrong.
Purah sighed, “I’m not crying because of my invention.” She cleared her throat. Already, she was trying to get herself back to normal. “I was crying because I failed a friend.”
Gods, did that hit home for Time and Sky.
It felt more complicated than that at times. Sky felt like he failed Zelda when she was sealed away, but with reinsurance he was feeling better about it. Such recollections began to resurface throughout the last six days. He felt he had failed Link, Time, and Legend—probably much more. His thoughts about it were dark. It felt more complicated than that, but Purah said it just right. She managed to nail it perfectly.
“You didn’t! You were trying to help him!” Sky exclaimed with eagerness. “And- and you can always try again! I’m sure Link will-“
He stopped and slammed his pal into his forehead. Why is he talking like that? He’s been so eager and mulish these past six days. Purah didn’t even react to him. Instead she apologized. She stood up and cleared her throat. She brushed her palms against her skirt.
Time chewed his lip. Lost in thought he remembered last night. Even though Link bowed his head, Time was able to get a glimpse of his eyes. They were full of desperation. Could you tell me what happened to you? I always felt like I was able to connect with you; Is what he had said. Time couldn’t answer the question. It didn't feel right nor worthy.
“What happened to him?” Time said with a mundane tone. If he puts emotion in his voice, he might sound like he cares too much. He was frowning and swallowed loudly.
Purah sighed. She was silent before answering. “Link and Zelda have sacrificed everything for Hyrule. Have you seen the ruins?”
Sky nodded eagerly, “Yes!”
“A beast had ravaged the land. It was Zelda who kept the beast at bay. Then it was Link who had defeated it. Not only did it happen once, but twice. As a result, their health is dwindling,” Purah tapped her recorder on her palm, but her eyes were facing the floor.
The story was almost familiar to Time. The beast caused havoc before he could do anything. He was too late, too young.
“Purah?” The door clicked open and Purah kicked the broken gadget behind the desk. Her eyes were wide and her stance stiff. Link wondered in, moving her eyes around. He noticed Purah’s unnatural pose and made a confused face. ”What happened? Your face is so red!” He laughed and pointed at her. He noticed the others in the room. He gave Time the smallest nod and smile but didn’t do anything to acknowledge Sky.
“Linky!” Purah exclaimed. Her face still in shock a little. “Knock next time!”
Link scratched his cheek, “What happened?”
“Nothing!” Purah waved her arms in a panic.
Link walked further into the room, “Come on, Purah. What’s wrong?”
“I, um… I’m telling them a funny and embarrassing story about you!”
He raised his eyebrows and his eyes looked as if they were betrayed.
“What!? Purah! Privacy please! Which one!?” He cried.
“Y’know, when you, uh, went missing!” Purah laughed nervously. He turned her head side to side to see if anyone else was playing along. They were not. They were more confused than anything.
“Huh?” Link squinted his eyes. “That wasn’t funny!”
Purah started to “laugh” even harder.
“And then you joined the search group that was looking for you! That was hysterical!” Purah’s face turned even redder.
Link smiled and started to chuckle, “Okay that was kinda funny.” Then he stopped, “But at the time it wasn’t!” He then started to chuckle again, failing to keep a straight face.
Time and Sky glanced at each other in shock. Their eyebrows were low but their eyes wide. They were making the same expressions. Link saw it and remembered that they aren’t even from Hyrule nor this time, so they never even knew he went missing.
Sky was brought back to when Zelda went missing. It wasn’t funny to him, but here was Link laughing.
Time went missing for seven years and because he was gone for so long, Hyrule was in ruin. Doesn’t matter anyway. Or does it?
“It’s not funny!” Link smiled. He cleared his throat. “I want to report that there are some witnesses of Yiga activity nearby.”
Purah gasped as she suddenly became stiff. She maneuvered around the desk and quickly walked to Link.
Time had heard about the Yiga Clan somewhere, but couldn’t remember.
“We need more guards, more watchmen. We need investigators. We can’t let them get close,” Purah said in a panic.
Link's face morphed into disgust. He cringed. “Purah, it’s fine. We can’t put more innocent people on the line. I’ve dealt with them all by myself before.”
“It’s still safer. You never know,” She replied.
Link rolled his eyes, “I’m safe! Everyone is safer when I’m here!”
“Linky, how many times are we going to have this conversation?” She squeezed her temples “You know why-“
“Until you understand,” Link interrupted. “That I am capable of doing things on my own, Purah! I’m not suddenly incompetent!”
“I’m not saying you are,” Purah kept her voice calm yet stern. “It’s only been two months.”
“So? I was fighting monsters after I defeated Ganon the first time. What's different now?” Link gritted his teeth.
“Linky, you need to rest-“
“How can I rest? How can anyone rest?!” Link yelled. “You know what I noticed about you? You constantly shut yourself away! You never leave this place, you never face issues head on, you just hide away where it’s safe and make your ‘minions’ do your dirty work! I don’t want to be like you! It’s pitiful” Link knuckles went white. He had gone up close to Purahs face. Rage was running through his blood. It came out of nowhere. Where was it from?
“Link!” Time interjected. He’s only known the man for one day, but he never expects Link to say something hurtful to someone who was trying to help him.
Link turned his head to Time, who was in a wide-stance.
“Leave her alone. She is doing what she can,” Time continued. He kept his voice serene.
Link looked at him with surprise and a pinch of betrayal. Then he furrowed her brows in anger. “You don’t even know anything, Time,” He said through his teeth in a cooler voice. His voice carried less venom when he spoke to Time.
“Link, have you thought that you are shutting yourself away from us. You are needed for mission?” Time replied, extending his arm to calm Link like he was some type of feral animal.
Link gasped and backed away from Purah. His rage cooled and all that was left was sizzling anger. He hated what he heard, yet he didn’t care what he said. He should hate Time now. He should.
He turned around and quickly walked out of the room.
Why did Time feel the need to say that? Why now? Purah shook her head. She apologized about Link and thanked Time. Sky began to jog out the door after Link. Time wanted to stop him. Tell her to leave him alone, but nothing would get through the boy.
Purah walked behind the desk and picked up the broken pieces of her gadget. She stared at them for a while. “He was never like that,” She broke the silence.
Time turned his head to her.
“He was gentle, calm, funny, and understanding,” Purah’s voice cracked. “Now he’s angry all the time.”
“Because of Zelda?” Time asked.
“Zelda is sick and there’s no cure,” She shut her eyes tightly. “He’s weaker now.”
Time nodded to the floor.
Purah walked up to him. “You are strong. He will be in good hands with you guys.”
Time lifted a brow.
“You will take him with you. He will get stronger. He will save thousands, if not millions with you. He will come back in one piece and find a cure for Zelda,” Purah smiled with hope. Time needed it. He needed to see a smile like that.

Sky scanned around the opening of the Lookout Landing trying to spot Link. He couldn’t leave Link feeling like that.
He spotted Link stomping away with his shoulders tense. Sky jogged over and called his name. Link haltered and turned around. He scrunched his nose when he saw Sky. Sky caught up to him.
“Link! I know you are not incompetent. You’re strong. I’m sure Purah thinks the same way. She’s just worried,” he said.
Link’s eyes wandered to the ground. “I appreciate it, but I don’t need your approval. You don't know me and I don’t know you.” He kicked the dirt on the ground.
“I understand. But if you ever need anything, I will be happy to help at any time. Don’t be afraid to come to me,” Sky tried to give a sincere smile, but it was hard when everything was tense. “You are a descendant of my spirit.”
Did he miss the whole point?
“Thanks,” Link said with a monotone voice, not wanting further argument even though his words irked him. After a moment, Link turned around and continued to walk away. He was not in the mood for this.
“Wait I-!” Sky exclaimed. He gripped Link’s wrist. Instantly, Link yanked his arm away, almost pulling Sky with his arm. He backed away and Sky stood there for a moment, not knowing how to react or what to do.
“Don’t touch me,” Link spat.
Sky brought his arms close to his chest. Butterflies formed in the bottom of his stomach.
“Hey! Sky!” A voice yelled from afar. “Stop!”
Both Link and Sky turned their bodies to the voice. Legend stood at the entrance of the place they were sleeping at. Shit. He was watching from afar with a stiff stance. He trampled towards Sky. He went face to face with him and pointed a finger at him. Sky kept backing away, but Legend would just step forward.
“What are you doing?” Legend furrowed his eyebrows. “Don’t force him to go with you!”
Sky glanced around if anyone was watching. Link stood there watching with his shoulders up to his ears.
“I wasn’t!” Sky’s voice became high pitched. “I was trying to help him.”
Legend placed his index finger on his chest. “He obviously doesn’t need your ‘help’, so back off!”
“You don’t even know what happened, so mind your business!” Sky presented his palms in front of his body.
As Legend and Sky went up to each other's face and yelled, Wild slowly backed away. His heartbeat was rapidly thumping against his ribs. He began to feel hot. He then realized he was running. It was like his heart was controlling his legs and his brain had no say in it. Why’d they have to show up? Why now?
He ended up in front of a door. He stared at it before finally turning the knob. The inside was dark because all the windows were covered. He slipped off his boots at the entrance and with ease, stepped inside. It was so quiet that his shaky panting was deafening. The wooden floorboards creaked almost every step he took.
He stepped around the corner to a bed being revealed. Zelda sat on the bed. Her back resting on some pillows against the headboard. She had a book faces down on her lap. Her head was perked up, but then slouched a little as she noticed Link. He sighed in relief. Like for some reason, she nor the bed wouldn’t be there.
“Link?” Zelda questioned.
Link was just staring at her. His breathing slowed and he bowed his head. He then walked beside her. He collapsed to the floor and rested his head on the bed. Zelda began to stroke his honey blonde hair. She twirled her fingers in his hair. It felt nice. Her hands felt good as it rubbed against his scalp. He loved when he was able to feel her. It was proof she was there and not just a voice in his ear or a figure of his imagination. He shut his eyes tight, so somehow it could suppress his emotions. His chest ached when he was within her presence. So overwhelmed with his duty. He began to shake.
“Oh, Link,” Zelda murmured. She didn’t need him to talk about anything. She already knew how he was feeling and why he was feeling it. She scooted over, leaving space for him on the bed. She patted the empty space. Link lazily got on the bed and burrowed beside her. His head rested on a pillow but nestled against her waist. He curled up in his leg. He took a long shaky deep breath. She continued to stroke his hair. He wanted to do something, like embrace her. He could never do that now.

Chapter Text
Link had skipped his appointment with Purah again. Instead, he had left the Lookout Landing. He dragged himself through Castle Town ruins. He notified Zelda of this, and despite her encouragement to see Purah, he still went to the ruins.
It had been gloomy the past few days. The air was heavy. The sunlight was blocked with thick clouds. A cold chill blew against his sensitive skin. He tensed up when the cold pinged at his scars. He raised his hood up to block out the breeze.
The colors were muted here. It was as if nothing nice could ever come to these ruins. Like there was some type of shield around it. His eyes went awry, and his throat tightened up so hard that it was hard for him to speak. He couldn’t remember a damn thing about this place a hundred years ago, but when he was here, it was as though his heart was torn out and bled right in front of him. If he ever tried to make an attempt to reattach his heart, it would only spill out again and break some more.
Gods. He clenched his fist around his hood and yanked it further down his face. Questions that constantly haunted his head emerged. Why did he have to fail before he could succeed? Why couldn’t he do things right the first time? Why can’t he remember the faces of the people that were killed? Did they suffer? Was it all in-
Something bright red drew his attention. He creased his brows. As he got closer to the object, he noticed it was a simple red apple. He looked around. There were no apple trees here. Then he spotted a bundle of burned fire sticks. There was his answer. The chosen hero’s camped here the first day.
He had let them stay out there that night. He could not bear to have them as a constant reminder of this impending doom. They must detest him. But no one understood that he wished to stay here. Stay here with the people who needed him. With the people he is able to remember. If he’s gone, how will Hyrule defend itself? Here, he is needed. People need him. Zelda needed him. If anything were to happen, he is here to keep everyone safe.
To keep everyone safe.
He thought maybe Time could understand him. Zelda had told Link the tale of the Hero of Time. It was his favorite story. He could relate to the hero. They were both put on a long rest. He didn’t know many details, but he liked to imagine that Time went through the same as him. Apparently not. Time didn’t understand.
He shut his eyes. Then he opened them only to find the apple again. He picked it up.
At the Lookout Landing, Link spotted Sky. Sky was at the training dummies with Aja. He was correcting Aja’s battle stance. Sky gave off a warm feeling. You can kick him in the shins, and he would happily take it. What did he go through to become like this? Link stared with scorn.
Sky didn’t understand Link either. Only a person who barely went through any hardships could ever be like that. How could he be so comfortable? If he understood what Link had gone through, he wouldn’t be asking anything from Link.
He suddenly dropped the apple. He bent down and reached his arm to pick it up, but nothing. His arm wasn’t there. He gritted his teeth before switching to his left arm. The apple was bruised. He wiped the dirt off the apple on his pants and continued on.
As Link exchanged greetings with Burwar, the vigilant front gate guard, he took a moment to appraise the changes in his appearance. Burwar appeared rougher, and his arms showed signs of newfound strength. This moment marked the first time in months that Link had paused to reflect on his own appearance; typically, his mind was consumed by other matters. Memories flooded back of their training sessions they had a mere few months prior.
Before, Link’s hair was in a ponytail, but now, he wore it down every day despite his long hair bothering him and tickling his scars. Why did he do it? He can’t put his hair up with one arm. Why doesn’t he ask for help? He simply doesn’t need it.
In the past, he would get up early in the morning and get dressed in his most formal attire. Now, every time he tried to dress accordingly, his body felt wrong. Like it somehow didn’t belong in this world, and everything around him was trying to reject him. It was easier to put on something that wouldn’t make him stand out. Gods, did he yearn to be dressed in those colors, but the hues no longer complemented his skin.
He had once stood before Burwar brandishing a sword, helping him to go through the motion. It felt good to help someone. But he was now standing in front of him, holding an apple. Link was losing muscle as Burwar gained. It was odd how much could change in such a short amount of time.
Could Link ever help another person? It sure felt like no one thought so. To this point, he also felt he couldn’t. But talking like that isn’t good. He thought he couldn’t defeat Ganon, but he did! He sighed. It’s because of his damn arm. Because of the toll the gloom took on his body to the point where it was irreversible. He can’t do anything.
Link then saw Legend. Link didn’t know how to feel about the guy. When Legend had yelled at him down in the emergency shelter, Link found deep passion in the man. He was quick to anger, yet quiet.
Legend just stood in one spot alone. His back faced Link. He looked past the open gates. He watched as the wild grass tossed in the light breeze. Link thought he looked like a small animal trapped in a cage looking at the freedom past the bars. He could leave, but he didn’t. Guess it’s the same for Link.
The other day, Legend had defended him. What made him change? Why did he snap at Link for refusing to join them just to defend him later?
Legend lifted his head to look at Link, and their eyes locked. For just a second, Link felt something. Like a charge through his veins. It was short-lived and barely noticeable, but it was there. He quickly turned his head away from Legend and continued to walk.
His heart was thumping. He was surprised by the unexpected sight in Legend's eye. Not to mention the strange sensation it gave him. It irritated him. Too much changed in the path of him. He got the impression from this that he might not be able to escape this impending boom.
He finally made it to the horse stall. There he went up to one of the horses and petted its mane. He smiled. He brought the apple up to its mouth where the horse scarfed it down.
“Good girl,” Link scratched under the horse's neck.
Chapter 9: Rain
Summary:
Sky and Time have a talk. Time helps Sky sort out something.
Sky tried to help Legend, but it didn’t go as planned.

Chapter Text
It has been four days since the hero’s arrived in this new Hyrule. The days have gone by quickly. They have been helping around the Lookout Landing. News of their arrival spread much quicker in this dense place. People have gone up to them, touching their armor, hair, swords, and trying to strike a conversation. Many people just stare from afar. This recognition made Time’s palms sweaty and his body antsy. Instead of questions like; how much can he harvest before sundown, there were questions with answers he thought he wouldn’t have to say out loud.
Sky on the other hand was happy as people came up to him. He’d engage in conversation. He loved talking about the Master Sword. Time wondered how he was able to do that with such ease. I guess there weren't much better things to do here anyway.
Others learned quickly not to approach Legend as much. Legend would just simply ignore them with unwelcoming looks. His conversations ended quickly as he didn’t engage much in them. Or he snatched the hands of people before they were able to touch him. Unless someone gave him something in return, like some snacks, he’d talk a little more.
When Link passed by, he’d simply smile at them. His lips would curve up but it was never enough to squint his eyes. At first, Time would smile back , but then he stopped and just looked with a blank face. His fist would clench everytime it happened. Sometimes he’d find himself snarling at himself, making angry noises under his breath. How could Link do that? Just simply pretending they don’t exist? At some point, he’s going to have to acknowledge their existence.
Time slammed his hand into forehead. Everything he’s feeling feels so childish. He thought he grew out of this bitter anger. Why is this anger suddenly coming back? Link was only smiling and he felt an unjust way. He feels like a child. He feels like he’s acting like one.
“What’s wrong?” Sky asked. Time blinked, his mind returning to the present. He and Sky were transferring boxes of ancient parts from one area to another.
He swung his head to Sky who was squinting his eyes at him. He noticed that Sky was quieter since the day they met Purah. He felt guilty to think that it was more relaxing that way.
“There is no team,” Time sighed.
He tapped his foot on the ground. Like a child, he wished he never met Purah. He was sure there was no hope for Link, for Sky and Legend. Ever for himself. Then Purah words swirled in his head.
Sky ignored his comment though, instead changing the subject. “We have no choice but to wait for a portal to appear,” he shrugged.
Time held his breath. Its been days and there’s no sign of any portal. He’s been on edge for days yet nothing has happened
“Really?” He said. “That’s it?”
Sky shrugged. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
Time furrowed his brows and bit his lip. It was what he wanted. It would be nice to move on from this. He saw the look in his eyes. He studied the way his scars webbed in his skin. The way Zelda clung to him when he had run off. Gods, the thought of it made his knees weaker. How could he ever take Link away.
“It is, but it’s not what you wanted,” Time replied.
“It doesn’t matter what I want. We're a team, we sometimes have to make sacrifices,” Sky places down some boxes.
Sacrifice. Something Time could assume was common to every hero. What did Sky sacrifice? What about Legend?
There was no team. There was nothing. Maybe in the beginning, there was something, but not anymore, it’s dead. There is no team.
He thought back when Link had tried to make some connection to him at the dinner table. He felt even more shame. Was Link desperate to find someone who could understand him?
“Why should you be the only one to make that sacrifice?” Time chewed his bottom until it started to bleed.
“What? Do you want me to cause more problems? Move on,” Sky snapped.
All sound ceased. The only thing that lingered was Sky’s inclination. He had been keeping to himself. Something was bothering him. The obvious answer would be Link. But by the looks of it, it may be Time and Legend themselves.
Time continues with his job. Any further comment may trigger him.
Sky squeezed his temples.
“Sorry, sorry,” He sighed. “I didn’t mean to talk like that. It’s just that…”
He trailed away at the end, but Time found himself trying to fill in the blank.
“You don’t want to sacrifice this,” Time finished his sentence.
Sky stared at his feet for a moment. He was trying to think of the right things to say. He filled his lungs.
“No,” He said.
He locked his lips.
“I used to be very lazy.”
His eyes were glued to Time’s. They were bright, so bright Time saw his reflection in them. The fire had died out years ago. Why wouldn’t it considering everything he went through. Then he looked at Sky. Why were Sky’s eyes so bright even in this state?
“I was so lazy that I didn’t care what would happen to me,” Sky continued. “Then Zelda had gone missing right in front of my eyes and something switched in me. Then I found out the world was in danger. I had never felt so strongly to save people. It was like an instinct. I was terrified, I was never terrified enough to give up. No matter how detrimental it became to myself, I had done everything in my power to save everyone.”
Time frowned at the last part. His mouth had gotten dry.
Sky pull off his glove from his right hand and pull up his sleeve. His presented his forearm to Time. Time stood in silence and he took in all the detail. His arm was covered in res
“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m not lazy anymore,” Sky chortled. “But I never really changed. I will always put others before myself and I still don't care about what happens to me.”
Despite the change Sky had gone through, he fundamentally remained unchanged. He ended with such a short conclusion. Time couldn’t help but wonder if there was more to it.
“You should care,” Time’s heart ached at his words. “You’re young, you should think of what’s best for you too. That’s just as important.”
Sky placed a hand on his stomach and laughed. Time lifted a brow. He scrunched his nose, annoyed that Sky laughed at his advice. Maybe he wasn’t cut out to help people in any way but killing.
“Don’t feel pity for me. You're the same way! I know just the way you are without even knowing who you are!” Sky replied with enthusiasm. He skipped over to the more boxes to carry.
“That’s not possible,” Time lowered his brows.
“Sure it is! You possess my spirit after all. I know how that thing works! What I don’t know is how you’re working it though,” He tapped his head.
Time keeps forgetting that they all shared a spirit. Especially considering how different they all were. To their core they are all the same. They all cared for Link in their own ways. Even if some ways were questionable. In the end, they strived for the same thing.
“I don’t think you should give up on Link,” Time said.
“What about Legend and you?” He huffed.
“You’ll know what to do,” Time smiled to himself. He felt a sense of clarity. He felt he could possibly understand his peers better. “You’re a good kid.”
Sky look away and rubbed his nape.
He smiled, “I don’t know. I’ve been messing up lately. It feels like everything I’m doing is wrong.”
He couldn’t control anyone. He could get anyone on the team to be on the same page and it frustrated him. Even when he acted on his own, he was still powerless and lost. He wished he had some type of guidance. He wished the Master Sword could tell him what to do. Now he was alone. It was hard to trust others when he couldn’t even trust himself.
“What do you feel is right?” Time asked. He hadn’t moved at all. His eyes were deep and hard to avoid.
“I want you, me, and Legend to be a team. I want to move on from this,” Sky answered quietly.
Time furrowed his brows. In a deeper and louder voice, he asked the question again, “What do you feel is right?”
Sky widened his eyes.
“I told you already.”
Time asked the question again but in an even louder and deeper voice.
“I don’t know,” Sky replied.
Time asked again with an even louder and deeper voice.
Sky knew that Time knew he was giving his wrong answers.
“I want to help Link,” Sky finally answered. “I sense his despair. He can’t thrive like this.” He clenched his fist.
There it was. There was the answer. Time could feel the truth through the passion in his voice. It was nice hearing it. He felt he almost lost the Sky he knew, but Sly was able to snap out of it.
“Sky, you are not lazy. Don’t take the lazy way out of this. You hear me?” Time placed his hands on Sky’s shoulders and looked down at his eyes. They were bright as always.
“What do I do though? I don’t know what the first step should be,” He sighed.
Time bit his lip for a moment, trying to thing of the right thing to say. With an idea, he dug through his pocket and pulled out a nut. He held it up to Sky’s face. Sky turned his head and lifted his brow.
“Do you know what this is?” Time asked.
“A Deku seed?” Sky scrunched his nose.
“I guess so. Do you know what happens if I throw it on the floor?” Time tapped the but to his hand.
“This deku nut is just a plain nut. There is nothing special about it. It looks as if it may hold no potential. But once you throw it to the ground, what happens to it?”
“It explodes?” Sky answered with a question, unsure where this is going.
“Right!” Time enthusiastically pointed to him. “A bright brilliant light is exposed.” Bright like Sky’s eyes. “This light can stunt enemies and inflict damage. This deku nut holds big potential, but it’s not as simple as that.”
Sky chuckled, “You’re really doing an analogy with a deku seed?”
Time chortled, “Yeah, I guess I am, but I’m not finished. Everyone has natural potential similar to the explosive power of a Deku nut. However, in order for the nut to reach its full potential, this skill needs assistance and collaboration from the person throwing it. Like the energy building inside of it, every encounter adds new levels of understanding, originality, and viewpoints. When the group process reaches a certain point, which is equivalent to the explosive force's maximal potential, each member can initiate their own deku burst.”
Sky reached for the deku nut out of Time's hand. At first, Sky thought that this analogy could have so many meanings. It was so vague like it was purposefully. Perhaps this analogy was worded in a way where Sky had to use his own wisdom to find the first right step instead of getting his answer. He studied the deku nut because maybe it would help him understand Time’s word to guide him through his problem.
Then it hit him. Sky knew what the right thing to do was and he was confident. How Sky interpreted Time’s wisdom is that he was the deku nut and Time is the one throwing him. Time is guiding him through his full potential.
“Am I the deku seed in this scenario?” Sky asked.
Time simpered, “I don’t know. It depends on how you look at it. No interpretation is incorrect.”
Sky thought again. He could be the deku nut, but Link is also a deku nut? They can both be deku nuts. Is everyone a deku nut? Sky sure feels like one. And the only way for Link to have his “deku burst” is if he has Time, Sky, and Legend throwing him. The only way to help Link is if everyone can help.
“Legend,” Sky whispered. He looked up from the deku nut to Time. “Where’s Legend? We have to help Legend first. We can’t help Link without helping Legend first!”
A childish excitement overcame him. For the first time in a while. He felt he had some sense of what direction he should go and it felt like the clouds had just cleared in his heavy head.
Time began to laugh, “Deku nuts never disappoint!”
“The deku seed exploded!” Sky’s fiery passion began to unfold, “We will not leave a team member behind. I can’t help Legend without you and I can’t help Link without all of you. Are you with me?”
Time nodded, “I will always be with you. Even if we don’t see eye to eye, I will be with you.”

Legend laid his head on the monument in the ruins. The one that is dedicated to the souls lost in this so-called “calamity.” He could help, but wonder what happened. It must’ve been painful. Its such a shame such calamity happened in a once densely populated place. He clenched his fist. How can anyone get this to happen? Who would do this?
The stone was cold against his face. The atmosphere was getting darker as the sun behind the gray clouds lowered.
He perked up his head when he heard footsteps and turned around to see Sky and Time walking towards him. He gritted his teeth. Can’t they just leave him alone? If Ravio was here, he’d distract them with his annoying sales. In a way it was protection for Legend. Ravio talks, Legend stands behind him.
“Hero of Legend,” Sky announced. Time stood beside him. He looked down on Legend.
Legend lowered his brows. He clung to the monument and just started up at them. He acknowledged them.
“Legend, I know we’ve had our differences, but I want to help you,” Sky said as he placed his hands on hips like it was to assert some type of dominance.
Legend squinted his eyes and scrunched his nose. Help? He didn’t need “help.” He turned away and rested his head on the monument. That only prompted Sky to walk around Legend to face him. Gods, why couldn’t he give up already. Not to mention is Time was there following him like a lost puppy.
“What is wrong?”
Legend rolled his eyes.
Sky pressed his lips together and continued.
“Come on. You can tell me. I don’t bite.”
Legend snarled, “Oh, you’ve done more than bite. You’ve gnawed at everyone and they’re bleeding out.”
Sky felt a flicker of anger, but he took a deep breath. Legend knew how to get under his skin. Not even Groose made him feel this way. Maybe it was because Groose used to do it out of pettiness and Legend was almost malicious. They were supposed to be close, they were supposed to get each other, but Sky wasn’t sure he could ever understand him.
Sky knelt down to Legend’s level.
“Legend, I’m trying to help. I want to help you," He muttered. He tried his best to put up the most empathetic looking face. Time stood behind him.
Legend sat up and leaned away. His face was full of disgust.
“What the hell are you doing? Why are you being weird?”
Sky furrowed his brow, “I’m trying to help you.”
Legend hated this. Sky would usually bicker back, but this behavior was fake and forced. What made him cringe was Time. He stood there. He was just standing. His face didn’t tell Legend anything. It was always Time and Sky together. They never listened to Legend. Were they out to get him?
A true hero would never force others into something they don’t want to do. A true hero would know when to stop. Sky truly didn’t know when to and it pissed him off.
“I don’t need your help. Get the hell away from me. You’re being weird,” Legend turned away. He jumped to his feet and began to walk away further into the ruins.
Then that’s when Sky snapped.
“Why won’t you listen to me!? I’m trying to help you!” Sky stomped his food. His legs were bent and his fist tight like he was ready to fight.
“You’re not helping. You’re talking to me like this so you can have your way,” Legend rolled his eyes.
Sky clenched his fists as his fury overtook his body.
“You're such an asshole all the time. No one can stand being around you.” Sky hissed across the thick air.
Legend turned around. He was silent for a moment, half of the reason was because he was surprised by Sky’s comment, the other half because he was preparing what he’ll say next. This is what he preferred.
“You don’t like being around me because I’m honest. You’re just sensitive and controlling! Not everything can go your way!” Legend's shoulders tensed up and he leaned forward. His voice became much louder.
“You cry like a baby every time someone says something you don’t like! And do you even realize how much stress you push on everyone because of your unbearable attitude towards everything!? No, you don’t because you’re selfish!” Sky stomped towards Legend, getting closer and closer. Time grabbed his arms and started to pull him back, but he forcefully pulled his arm out of his grip.
“Stress I push on everyone!? Are you serious!? Link hasn’t even acknowledged us because you’re so pushy! You’re being so counterproductive!”
“Me!? Counterproductive!? I’ve been the one carrying this team! You haven’t done shit! You’ve been sitting on your ass for days!”
“Maybe you should try to accomplish something before you criticize me!” Legend spat. “I have done a lot more than you can imagine! You have no idea what's happened to me!”
The last part was almost a cry. He held his chest tight as he had a wide stance. Sky’s throat froze before it could say his next words.
“Enough!” Time screeched as he inserted himself between Sky and Time. “Stop it! You guys will not act like cuccos! You are both counterproductive and stressful!”
Sky pointed to himself, “I am not counterproductive, he’s the one-“
“Hush!” Time interrupted. His wide eyes stared down at Sky with his finger to his lip. “Both of you are at fault! Do you think fighting is going to solve anything!?”
Legend snarled, “I’ve literally done noth-“
“Hey!” Time interrupted again, pointing to Legend. “We are all at fault. We should do what’s right. We have to communicate with each other, then communicate with Link.”
“Of course you take his side,” Legend spat with venom. He longed for Ravio beside him. He was deprived of any company. He felt so small under Sky and Time like a bunny to a wolf.
Sky gave Legend a dirty look and crossed his arms. Legend raised his fist at him.
“I’m not taking sides. I want to resolve the tension. Peacefully talking does more than you think,” Time maintained his composure as best as he could. That’s how Malon and him were able to take care and bloom their relationship.
But Talking? With them? All these boys know is killing. You can’t talk to a pig. You can only kill them.
“Whatever,” Sky flayed his arms and turned around.
Time turned towards him and stared at him like he just insulted the princess of the Zora. How could something go from a zero to one hundred in just seconds? Was this going to be his life for now on? He felt it again; this childish bitterness. Sky completely ignored his advice. Legend barely even spoke to him. They were able to cooperatep even if they disagreed. He felt so hopeless. He doesn't know more than just to kill.
“Gods, Time,” Legend clenched his hair and pulled his head down. “This is not sunshine and rainbows, Time! True effort is beyond your head! But everything will come to you! Oh, it will come and you will not be prepared. Then everyone will have to pay for your failures! Screw yourself!”
He hurriedly started to stomp away. Deeper within the ruins, away from Lookout Landing. He was done; he had the final say.
But what did he mean by any of that? Time felt goosebumps prickle his skin. He didn’t know if it was from Legends words or the chill from the dark clouds covering the sunlight. Sky also stood there, his angry face wiped off, replaced by an open mouth and big eyes.
Finally, Sky sighed and shook his head, “I’m not dealing with this. I’m going back. Are you coming with?”
Time chewed his lip, and filled his lungs. His fingers twitched. The only direction his legs were able to move through the ruins. He hesitated before speaking, “I don’t know. Maybe I… should I follow him?”
He felt so strongly about this, but Sky. Sky was always there.
He stared at Sky, waiting for his response. For some reason, he felt like he needed his approval. It felt like he was picking sides now. Sky or Legend? Sky pressed his lips in a thin line, “Whatever, go. Do what you believe is right. I can’t help him.” Time sighed in relief before Sky continued. “But, you’re wrong.”
Time gave Sky a confused look, tapping his foot in anticipation.
“You said our team is dead. But there was never a team to begin with. It never existed, so do whatever you want. I don’t know what happened to you and you don’t. Know what happened to me,” He began to walk to the Lookout Landing before Time could think of a response. The Master Sword on his back was dull. He looked back for a moment, then kept walking.
Both Legend and Sky walked away from Time in different directions. Time was stretched. He used to stick to Sky due to Sky’s desire to lead and everyone to follow. Legend didn’t conform though. And perhaps, maybe Time didn’t either. Maybe he needed to help Legend before he could help Sky and Legend, and then Link. This journey started with Sky and Legend, not Time and Sky nor Time and Legend. It must continue with Sky and Legend.
He dropped the deku nut. Now he got to wait for it to explode.
Time walked deeper into the ruins.

“Legend,” Time asserted.
Legend kept striding not even acknowledging Time. He should’ve done this in the beginning. When they arrived at the lookout landing, he should’ve kept walking away.
“Legend! Get back here!” Time yelled. He caught up to Legend. He started to keep up with Legend’s pace. Legend was just intensely staring forward, ignoring Time’s presence. He strives wide and fast.
“Legend. Is something the matter? Why are you so angry all the time?” Time called out.
Legend ignored and just kept stomping, though, his fist had loosened and his breathing became louder.
“I’m not angry! You’re angry!” Legend bared his teeth.
“Did something happen? Did someone do something? Are you in danger?” Time pleaded in a series of questions.
Legend pace faltered. Time prepared himself for his response. He probably was going to get in his face. Instead, his intense face dropped. His brows slanted. The corner of his lips lowered. He scrunched his eyes tightly closed. He brought his hands to his eyes.
“Stop following me!” His voice was loud and raspy.
Time stepped in front of him to face him. He lowered his head just to look at Legend’s face. He didn’t expect this. He didn’t expect Legend to become so naked.
“What’s wrong?” Time furrowed his brows in concern. His voice was softer, but still eager to know the answer.
Legend sniveled. He refused to look at Time. He shook his head. He felt so weak all of a sudden.
“Legend, you can say anything, I don’t care,” Time frowned.
Legend exhaled, “I can’t ever forgive you, ‘Hero of Time’ “
Time shivered. He hadn’t heard that in years nor had he ever heard it said like that. With such grief. Had he pushed Legend too far? Should he have stopped? He didn’t understand this sudden grudge towards himself.
The sky was dark with thick clouds. The air was still, yet chilly. Everything was quiet and motionless. The atmosphere was heavy, like it could crush them any moment.
“What?” Time’s voice was thick. His thoughts started swirling in his head of what Legend could possibly mean. “What's wrong?” This time his voice was more assertive.
“No one can ever seem to take a break,” His voice was high pitched. His chest felt heavy. “I just want to leave, please.”
Time’s lips thinned. He sucked in air. “We can’t.” Is all he could say. No point in lying to him. A lie like that could cause more damage than the truth.
“Everytime I go through this, people keep dying or getting hurt. I want to go home,” The last sentence was almost like a beg. Legend pressed his hands into his eyes. “I want to go home,” He rasped. He fell to the floor, his knees now unable to support his own weight. He wanted to be in his home. He’d be with lazy, selfish Ravio. “If only you had succeeded, everyone would be fine.”
Time knelt down to Legend’s level. His fingers touched his hands only a little bit. Now he understood him. Legend was distant. One more person getting hurt was more than he could bear. Since everyone around him had either died or been injured, he found himself unwilling to endanger any more people. He couldn't have imagined subjecting Link to anything more after seeing him.
A drizzle of rain started to sprinkle around them. Small splashes of water fell on the dirt, starting to create mud. The sky was dark, the clouds nearly black.
“Legend…” Time’s eye didn’t leave Legend. He frowned at the sight of his companion. His heart felt heavy.
“A-and,” Legend stuttered. “You died, so now…” he let out a quiet wail. “I-I just want to go home.”
Time bit the side of his mouth. His eyes widened at Legends words. The rain started coming down harder, starting to soak their clothes.
“Died? Legend, no one is dead right now. No ones going to die. That's all that matters,” Time asserted over the noise of rain.
Legend removed his hands from his eyes and faced Time. His eyes were red still didn’t look at Time and the bags under his eyes somehow looked deeper. Then it was there again the feeling as if lightning had struck Time, but it was a current of energy and connections rather than pain.
“I have to take after you because you died,” Legend mumbled as if he was too scared to say it louder. Too scared to go into a deeper detail. Maybe it was better for a different time.
Everything was so confusing. Everything was eye-opening. Time had found out stuff about himself that he didn’t even know. It was much to overwhelming, but at the same time, it was liberating. He could finally know answers and the truth about himself and his spirit that had been gnawing at himself for years. But that didn’t matter now. A friend, a teammate, needed him.
“Legend,” Time said. The rain poured on them, soaking their clothes, Their knees became muddy.
Legend's eyes scanned everywhere, but Time’s. He was anxious to find something to look at other than Time, but his mind was running too fast that it felt impossible.
“Look at me,” Time contended.
Slowly, Legend first faced Time, then his eyes followed.
Time put a sturdy hand on Legends shoulder and got close to his face.
“I wish I could take you home. I wish we could’ve saved everyone. I wish I could take your pain. But despite the position we were put in, we are only human. It doesn’t make us unstoppable nor superhuman. There is only so much we can handle and I think we did a pretty damn good job,” Time took a hold of Legends hand with a tight firm. Legend only stared at him with his eyebrows angled upwards and his mouth slightly opened. Water dripped from their faces. Their hair stuck to their skin. They look as if they were a mess, but that wasn’t acknowledged.
“You,” Legend's voice cracked. “You have to be unstoppable.”
Time bit his lip. Legend was being realistic. If you are the hero, you have to be unstoppable. You should be, but it’s not always possible. He was right in a sense.
“You already are unstoppable,” Time furrowed his brow. He spoke loudly, above the rain. “I don’t know a damn of what you have done, but you did something right to be here right now. I know you have a big heart and I know you wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you gave up on not only yourself, but the people of Hyrule. You are unstoppable, don’t let this stop you.”
Their foreheads were close, almost touching.
“Legend, we are here to make things easier. We will tackle each problem one step at a time. It’s okay to feel like this, but remember your resilience,” Time eyebrows were low. It was hard not to believe him due to his hard-nosed stare of passion. “If something happens, it’s everyone’s problem to bear together. Not only yours, not anymore. You hear me?”
Legend slightly nodded, still taking in Time’s words. He had watched his uncle sacrifice himself for the Princess despite having no right to do so. What would his uncle think? What would Ravio think? He’d make fun of him, not as a joke, but out of the blunder. Marin? She’d always wanted what’s best for him. What is best for him? What was best for the hero spirit?
The rain began to drizzle again. The drops now soft kisses to their skin.
“Do you hear me?” Time spoke over the rain. He tightened his grip around Legend's hand. Legend nodded his head with more force. His eyes dropped to the ground. They were sinking in the mud. His legs were filthy. It was going to be hard to get the mud off of his tunic. Time was just as muddy, but it seemed like he really noticed and if he did, he didn’t care. “Come on, let’s go back.”
Legend just nodded his head again. It was all he could do. He felt cold and deaden. How was he supposed to feel? He didn’t feel as if there was a war drumming his chest. He didn't feel anger pumping throughout his blood every waking moment. It was odd. His throat felt tight, his eyes were droopy, his chest felt light, his fingers joint felt weak, too weak to count anymore. A short whimper escaped from his lungs. He felt calmer, at ease. He felt… sad. So sad. Sad for everyone he had lost, might lose, for his Zelda, his uncle and parents, Ravio, Marin, the sages, and himself. The grief was heavy and it laminated. He hadn’t felt this way in so long. It felt so nice. It was a beautiful feeling.
Time helped him up, supporting his weak knees. Usually he’d probably argue about going back. But he was too somber to argue with Time. Did he even have anything to argue about? It didn’t feel like he did. He never really did.
They walked together. Time’s arm held under his armpit like he was giving his extra support. Much needed support. He could now breath better when he walked. His anger almost suffocated him.
As they drew closer to the Lookout Landing, they both noticed something odd that set off alarm bells in their head. Lookout Landing was loud with people. Why would there be so many people out if it was just pouring? Their pace started to increase. Their postures turned uptight.
“Time?” Legend's voice was high-pitched. “Somethings not right.”
Time just stared at the landing. Anticipating anything. He swore he heard metal on metal. Shouts started to erupt. Was there a fight?
They shared glances and began to jog. Time led the way as Legend followed behind him. His mind was running with possible outcomes. Did someone get hurt? Is someone dead? He couldn’t tell if these thoughts were his gut feeling or anxiety. Sky was there. He’d surely be fine. Right? What if he wasn’t? Zelda? She was sick. She could get hurt easily. Link? He only has one arm. He can’t defend himself as well.
Sky. Legend shut his eyes right. He was depending on Sky to take care of what was happening now. Sky was stubborn, he would never let anything happen to anyone even though he could piss everyone off.
It became hard to breathe. It became hard to see. The drizzle began to increase into a soft rain, then quickly into a pour. The drops were big and fast. They as if each drop of a flick to their skin.
Finally they made it to the entrance. There was definitely no monster inside, but there was a panic. A hoard of people seemed to be surrounding the emergency shelter that was now closed-off. Link and Purah were among these people. It was just a group of people yelling at each other, while some panicked and cried. That loud splashes of rain didn’t help with the noise. Time and Legend ran over when they noticed Sky in the hoard. He was off to the side, trying to join in and say something, but his presence was being ignored.
“Sky!” Time yelled. Sky turned his head and almost sank when he noticed Time and Legend were here.
“Thank the goddess!” He exclaimed. He put his hand to his chest. His muscles relaxed and he sighed. He separated from the hoard of people and huddled with the hero’s.
“What happened!?” Time asked, Legend stood behind him.
Sky too was soaking wet. His wet hair was slicked back and the Master Sword was strapped on his back. He was picking at his skin.
“The gate guard, Burwar, was kidnapped by something called the Yiga Clan!” Sky yelled.
Chapter 10: Sword’s Hilt
Summary:
Sky, Time, Legend, and Link go fight the Yiga and it gets intense.
Notes:
I’ve put off this chapter for sooooo long and to be honest, I’m not really happy about it, but I am suffering from writers block and I wanted to post something. Anyway, we are almost towards the end of the story.
Chapter Text
Time paced back and forth. The Yiga Clan. He heard of the title before. It really feels like danger follows him. Not even in different time in history could he catch a break.
Not to mention, this was not a good time for this to happen. Everything was a mess. Time needed some guidance, something, a sign to push him in the right direction, but despite Sky and Legend beside him, he feels like a little kid again without his fairy. He stopped pacing.
Sky was staring at the floor with his teeth chewing his nails. Perhaps he had a plan. He was shaking ever so slightly, but Time noticed it. Then he noticed the way his eyebrows upturned and the crinkle in his forehead. It was off. Time wondered what he was feeling.
“Sky,” Time said.
Sky jolted his head up at the sudden call for him. Wide eyes met with Time with his name still in between his teeth. Despite the dark atmosphere, the Master Sword still shines brightly somehow. Time found himself looking at the sword rather than Sky.
“What are you thinking?” Time asked.
Sky lowered his brows.
“We rescue the man,” Legend answered instead. It was the simple thing that everyone had probably already come to the conclusion of.
Sky hadn’t even looked at Legend yet. Legend’s eye twitched at him.
Time glanced at the crowd. Panic faces surrounded Link. The rain only made Link’s scars more prominent. There was panic as people snatch weapons and held them up.
Sky walked past Time to the the crowd. His fingers glided over Time’s shoulder, but his eyes didn’t meet with Times. Instead he just started out with wide eyes.
“No,” he said. “We help Link instead.”
Time nodded. He strived to the crowd. His armor clanked together. He whipped his head around to get his wet hair out of his face. His head was down, but his eye up.
“Listen up!” He yelled. His voice never felt so right until now. It was proud, yet humble. It was strong, yet trusting.
Heads quickly whipped to him. Link stared at Time with low eyebrows and wide eyes. Veins popped of his head. He did not look happy with Time’s presence. Purah on the other hand looked almost relieved as she sighed.
“We, the three Chosen Heros of the past will be of assistance for Link. No other lives shall be at risk!” Time talked with his head up. Sky and Legend appeared beside him. Legend had his arms cross and Sky had his to his side was his fist clenched.
“You don’t know anything about the Yiga Clan! You don’t even know anything about where they might be!” Link argued
“So we shouldn’t do anything then!?” Sky scrunched his nose.
“The Yiga Clan wants me! Not you guys! That's why they took Burwar! They want me!” Link strived towards the other hero’s. His hand clenched his numb tightly. “And I’m not incompetent. Ican do this myself!”
“No one said you were!” Legend stomped his foot. He now felt angry, but this was different. He was more mad at himself than anybody else.
Time on the other hand was angry at Link. He turned around and snatched a sword off the muddy ground. He presented the handle of the sword to Link “What are you waiting for? A man’s life on the line. Get up and save him now! Why are you still here arguing!? A knight would be gone already looking for Burwar! Are you trying to prove yourself or something!? Do it already!”
Link scrunched his nose. His shoulders were tense. He huffed and looked away. Time was right. As much as he hated to admit it, he had to. What was he really waiting for? He’s fought so much worse. He’s fought the Yiga countless times without fail. Why did he hesitate now? Maybe this time, he was sure he didn’t have the skills to win. He was just stalling, trying to convince himself he could fight. But now is not the time. Someone is in danger.
“Fine,” Link muttered, snatching the sword from Time’s hand. He turned on his heel, his wet boots slapping against the muddy ground as he started toward the edge of the Lookout Landing. The gathered crowd parted before him, their whispers of doubt and hope blended together.
Sky and Legend exchanged a glance, then fell into step behind him. Time followed a moment later, his eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of further danger.
As they walked, the tension rose. Link’s pace quickened, his resolve firming with every step.
Sky finally broke the silence. “We need a plan.”
Link didn’t stop walking, but his shoulders tensed. “I’ve fought them before. I know how they operate.”
“They’ll know what to expect from you,” Legend interjected, his voice sharp. “Just because you fought them before doesn’t mean the fight will be the same.”
“I know that,” Link bares his teeth.
Time remembers what Legend had told him days earlier, Y’know, a tower doesn’t automatically mean that there are people. Trust me. Don’t keep your hopes up for nothing. It’s the biggest mistake you can make.
It had bothered him back then. Time thought he had said that because he liked to argue.
They all faulted when they saw a figure standing in the middle of the field. It was Burwar.
He was shaking violently as he hugged himself and his legs pressed together. He looked so helpless. His hair was a mess and his clothes ripped up like he tried to put up a fight and he did one hell of a job.
Sky began to run, “Come on!” Time followed.
Legend almost followed, but Link placed his arm in front of him. He turned his attention to Link, but Link just intensely stared at Burwar.
“It smells like bananas,” He muttered
Legend creased his eyebrows. Where he was from, bananas were good fortune. Though, he had a bitter taste in his mouth.
The air was heavy and oddly silent. The only sound was the rains patter.
The Yiga Clan didn’t even have the humanity to spare an innocent person. Not even Burwar who hadn’t nothing to do with Link nor Zelda.
Up close, he looked considerably worse. His right side of his face was bloated and red, as though he had been struck in the face several times. He was breathing erratically. He sobbed and cried. Time and Sky carefully returned their swords to their sheaths. Time extended a helping hand to steady Burwar.
“Wait a moment. Step away,” Link urged with uneasiness. It was odd that Burwar was just standing in the middle of nowhere.
“I’m going to give him my potion,” Sky pulled a red potion out of his satchel.
Burwar eyed the Master Sword.
Legend squinted his eyes at him.
Sky popped the top of the potion off.
Legend gasped.
“Stop!” Link hollered.
One moment Link was next to the Legend, the next he was gone. In a matter of seconds, he was in front of Sky, shoving him to the ground. His sword in front of his body. The sound of the metal clash rang through the air as the sickle struck down at Link’s sword, knocking it out of his hand. He lost his balance. The sickle was dragged down Link's chest, tearing his tunic and cutting through his flesh.
The contents in the potion spilled into the ground.
‘Burwar’ disappeared into thin air with poof.
Link faltered. He was shaking like an earthquake. He gasped for air, each breath coming harder and faster, as though no amount of oxygen could fill his lungs. Yet, at this moment, none of it mattered.
Sky just sat on the grass dumbfounded. Rain ran down the top of his hair. He didn’t know. He had no idea. He didn’t know.
Time instantly wrapped an arm under Link's arm, supporting his weak legs. But Link had nudged him away.
“We don’t have time for this!” Link clenched his teeth. He snatched the sword and raised it.
Poof
A Yiga soldier appeared out of thin air.
Link shoved Legend to the wet ground.
“Get down!”
Arrows flew above them. They turned around and there they saw someone in a red tight suit with a mask.
Link straightened and sprang forward, pushing off with his toes while keeping low to the ground, closing in on the figure. He unevenly slashed his sword at the man, but before he was able to make the cut, the man had disappeared.
He faltered a bit. He pressed the handle of the sword against his chest. He hissed through his teeth.
His form was staggering.
“Shit,” he breathed under his breath.
Time wrapped his hand around Sky’s armpit and pulled him to his feet.
Sky’s lip quivered.
“Why did I..?”
Patter patter patter
Legend shivered, he suffocated on the air. An arrow almost hit his head. Without Link, he definitely would’ve been shot. He’s survived through brutal trials and this could be the one that ended him for sure. He wasn’t going to make the mistake again.
He heard a taunting chuckle from behind. His ears perked. He may not have been quick to notice, but he was quick to move. Without a moment's thought, he flipped his body and launched his sword at the voice with a howl. His sword spun in circles like a boomerang, but there was no one there.
Legend watched the open space with a wide eyed stare and trembling hands. Rain water dripped from his chins. He turned his head to the others and they looked at him with confusion.
He turned back with his sword on the mud. He slowly walked to the blade.
“Don’t!” Link yelled. He faltered his posture. He lowered his voice, “Don’t get that blade. It’s a trap. Everything that happens from now on is a trap.”
A deep voice rumbled from behind, and that was all the warning they needed. Instinctively, Time swung his Biggoron sword, spinning around with practiced speed. As he turned, he faced a towering figure in a red suit and mask, his exposed muscles making Time’s heavy armor seem almost inadequate. It was the Yiga Blademaster. It held a long, slender blade.
Despite his size, the man was fast. He darted back just before Time’s sword could strike. With a mocking laugh, the Yiga slashed his sword at nothing, but a powerful force surged from the blade, hurtling through the air toward Link.
Link’s eyes widened in horror as the sharp blast raced toward him. He was too exhausted to react in time as his body simply couldn’t keep up with his mind.
Legend crashed into Link, sending both of them sliding across the slick grass as the blast tore through the air just behind them. He ended up on top of Link but quickly scrambled off. Link lay on the ground, wincing from the impact, unsure if his body could take much more. Still, it was better than getting slashed again.
Legend reached down and offered his hand to help Link up, but Link, panting heavily, waved it off.
The blademaster disappeared.
It would be great to have the companions from their hero’s journey by their side right now.
Legend looked down at his tunic. It was stained with red. He wasn’t even touched yet. He looked over to Link.
Time clenched his teeth. His body was suddenly overwhelmed and he raised his sword. “Show yourself, cowards! Face us like a real fighter!”
A deep laugh.
Time turned around, the blademaster raised its sword above his head. He raised his sword to block, but it was too late.
The Master Sword crashed into the sword. Sky pushed the Yiga away with one slash. He raised his sword skywards and it glowed. It was as if the blade was the sun itself. It twinkled in Time’s eye.
Sky slashed down with such energy that Time hadn’t ever seen. Just like the Yiga, a force surged from the sword, but this one was a brilliant blue. It swirled with a whirlpool. It was faster and stronger than the Yiga’s. Time stumbled backwards from the force, but Sky stood his ground.
The force swirled, decapitating the blade of the blademaster sword, then into his chest. He fell to the ground and laid motionless.
Time stared in awe. Legend's mouth was wide open. When was the Master Sword ever able to do something like that? Link coughed.
Though, Sky staggered. He heaved as his special move took a lot of energy out of him.
Time grabbed his arm, “You okay?”
Sky gave him a thumbs up.
Poof poof poof
They were surrounded by three Yiga soldiers with scythes. This was just perfect. Sky was now exhausted, Time was too slow, and Legend didn’t have his sword.
Proof
Link yelped. The Yiga pulled his hair back and pressed a scythe to his neck.
That’s when all the Yiga charged. One appeared above Legend landing right on top of him. Trapping him between the mud and his knee.
“Let go of me! You pigs!” Legend flailed, but they held down his limbs.
“Hey!” Time raised his sword, but before anything could happen, a Yiga tackled him, twisting his arm, and instantly tying his wrists and legs together. The Yiga put a scythe to his throat.
Sky stood there dumbfounded. Despite the rain, he felt hot. Yet, his fingers trembled like they were cold. He licked his lips.
“You’re not the chosen hero?” The Yiga holding Time muttered so quietly that Sky almost missed it over the sound of his breathing. “You who hold the Legendary Blade.”
The voice sounded dry and innocent.
Sky stepped forward. The Yiga pressed the blade into Time’s skin.
Legend yelped. The Yiga was slicing deep into his forehead while pulling on his hair. Blood trickled down.
The Yiga holding Link didn’t do anything.
“Wha…” Sky quivered.
He’s been in a situation like this before, but he had help before. He was alone now.
“The sword, boy,” The Yiga said. “It broke once before. Give it. Give it to us and we let them go.”
“Sky!” Link screeched. “They won’t let us go. There’s no point in listening.”
“You’re not alone, Sky,” Time said. He gave Sky a look. The type that says do what you think is right.
Sky looked at the blade of the Master Sword. He only saw himself, no one else. Then he looked up. The scythe was breaking skin on Times neck, but Time didn’t look worried, well not for his own life at least. He almost looked entertained.
Legend's face was head down in the mud. He no longer struggled. His body was as if it was dead.
Link looked as if he could barely stand, but also panicked.
Sky sighed. He tossed the sword into the mud. The blade instantly soaked the dirt. He could no longer see himself in the blade..
All three of the Yiga instantly turned their head to the sword.
Sky furrowed his brow, “One of you has to take it.”
The Yiga froze, their gazes locked on the Master Sword. It shimmered faintly in the rain, almost as though it was aware of the situation. The Yiga holding Legend’s head down hesitated, momentarily distracted by the blade.
Sky’s heart raced. He stepped back, with his hands raised. Fear gripped him, but he didn’t show. “You want it so badly? Take it.”
The Yiga holding Time barked a command, “Stay still!” The scythe pressed harder against Time’s neck, drawing a thin line of blood.
The Yiga didn’t respond, but Sky saw their unease. They exchanged glances, unsure. The Yiga pinning Legend tied his motionless arms. He let go of Legend’s hair and stepped toward the sword.
Sky legs felt like jelly. “Let my friends go, now,” he said.
As the Yiga soldier bent to pick up the Master Sword, a sharp, searing light burst from the blade. A force exploded outward, throwing the Yiga soldier back into the air. He landed with a sickening thud, completely motionless.
Sky laughed in a wicked way, “That sword is welded by the brave, honest, and strong. You cowards are none of those!”
The Yiga holding Link shoved him to the ground and charged at Sky with a snarl, his sickle raised.
Sky lunged toward the Master Sword, but the Yiga was already above him. There was no time. The sickle came down, and Sky slammed his hands around the blade. It cut deep into his flesh, and he gritted his teeth, feeling the hot blood drip down his face.
The Yiga pressed harder, the blade inching toward his face. Sky squeezed his hands together, desperate to stop it, but then the pressure ceased.
A chill filled the air.
Sky’s eyes widened as he looked up. The Yiga was frozen solid, like meat pulled from a freezer.
“Legend!” Sky gasped.
The Yiga holding Time showed no sign of relenting, pressing the blade deeper with a cruel determination. Sky’s heart raced, he knew the Yiga was moments away from finishing the job.
Time shut his eyes as he threw a deku nut to the floor causing a loud flashing pop to the ground. The Yiga stumbled a bit before adjesting his blade to slice Time’s throat.
Legend pointed his wand to the Yiga but nothing happened, like the thing ran out of juice.
The Yiga laughed.
Legend turned red. He grumbled. He chucked his wand right in the head of the Yiga. The Yigafaulted a bit, giving just barely the extra time to spare.
With a roar of fury, Link drove the hilt of the sword into the Yiga’s head from behind. The Yiga howled in pain, but Link didn’t stop. He struck again, harder this time. Again. And again. The sound of impact filling the air. The Yiga crumpled to the ground, and Link was on top of him, relentless, smashing the hilt down with everything he had, not giving him a chance to breathe.
Legend gasped as he realized it was his own sword.
“I HATE you! Give back Burwar NOW!” Link screeched.. “Burwar is innocent! The world isn’t guilty!”
Link stopped. He used the sword to hurt, not defense.
The Yiga soldier beneath him groaned weakly, mask split in half to reveal a pale, battered face. A deep, mocking chuckle escaped his bloodied lips, despite the pain. “Hyrule… is distasteful. We rid of the ugly… can’t you see? Burwar… he will be returned… he is no longer useful. We wish to have your soul and the blood of the princess.”
One final time, Link smashed the hilt of the sword with all his might. Bones crunched, knocking the Yiga out.
He dropped the sword. His breath was shaky. His one good hand trembling as his fury seeped away, leaving behind an overwhelming exhaustion. The rain poured over him, washing away the blood smeared across his knuckles and the hilt.
Sky cut the rope around Time. Time took his Biggoron sword back.
They were all quiet as Link stared at nothing. They let Link do what he had to do. They perhaps all felt the same at some point.
“Link,” Time breathed. “Are you… done?”
Link nodded.
Suddenly, the Yiga hand shot up with unexpected speed, a hidden dagger glinting in the faint light as it aimed straight for Link’s eye.
Time lunged, his reflexes moving faster than his aged body had. His blade sliced cleanly through Yiga's arm. Then the Yiga disappeared.
Poof!
They all turned their heads. There on the floor was Burwar, curled up, and unconscious.
Link inhaled deeply through his nose, the earthy scent of fresh grass filling his lungs. He ran to him. His face looked untouched and his skin was warm. He felt authentic. Link sighed. He motioned the others over. They hesitate at first.
Sky felt his pulse, “I think he’ll be okay. But we should definitely get him to a doctor.”
Time put Burwar on his back and carried him. They walked to Lookout Landing.
The rain had finally stopped, yet heavy clouds lingered in the sky, with beams of light casting through. Time gleamed at the lighted, it was a brief reprieve, a moment of calm.
Legend exhaled slowly, his gaze lifting to Burwar as if to confirm he was truly there and safe. Sky, standing nearby, slid the muddy Master Sword back
into its sheath with a soft grin.
Link staggered, his vision ingested with black spots and grew with every passing second. The world seemed to slow around him. He gasped for air, his chest heaving as if a heavy weight pressed down on him, but it was never enough. His hand clutched his chest instinctively, the warmth of blood seeping through his fingers, too much blood.
His knees buckled, and the ground rose to meet him. Voices called out, desperate and panicked, but they were distorted, distant, as though coming from underwater. Confusion clouded his thoughts. The blackness overtook him, spreading until there was nothing left. No sight, no sound, only silence.

Legend lifted the hand mirror to his face and pulled his fringes back. The stitches on his forehead were a nasty look, making him swallow hard. The swollen purple skin made him feel sick. He patted his hair back on his forehead. He laid down in bed.
It had been just a day since the battle with the Yiga Clan. Purah had stitched the cut on his forehead. A potion would’ve done good, but they were using that for more important issues.
There was a knock at the door.
Legend sat up, adjusting his blue hat, “Come in!”
The door creaked open and Sky peaked his head out. “How’s your forehead?”
Legend let out a breathy laugh that held no joy. “Nothing like another battle scar. Maybe people will finally realize I fight monsters rather than talk about them.”
Sky chortled. He fully walked in, closing the door behind him. He rubbed his hands together as if they were cold. Yet, there were beads of sweat on his face.
“Um…how… are your hands?” Legend asked with hesitation.
Sky looked at his own hands. They were wrapped in bandages. “The potion made it better, but I don’t think I’ll be able to wield a sword for a couple days.”
He stood there awkwardly, staring at the ground. He looked weird for a moment until Legend realized he didn’t have the Master Sword behind him.
“You really saved my ass out there” Sky simply said. “I’m surprised.”
Legend snorted, leaning back against the headboard. “Yeah, well, someone has to keep you from getting yourself killed. You have a talent for getting into danger.”
Sky pressed his lips in a thin line. His cheeks flared, “I was being dumb. And stupid.”
“Yeah, tell that to Link. He’s the one who was in critical condition.”
“I know that,” Sky snapped. But he backtracked and exhaled. His guilt and frustration still itched at him. He stepped closer, his voice softer. “I know. It’s just that you saved my life and I….”
Legend pulled his knees to his chest and sighed. “What do you want, Sky? An apology letter? A parade? Because I’m not gonna give you any of that.”
Sky took a step closer, and the weight of his presence made Legend’s chest tighten, “No. I just want you to know that I don’t take what you did lightly. I could’ve been six feet under if it weren’t for you.”
Legend scoffed, “It’s not that deep. I did it because I had no choice. It’s in our conscience. We are programmed like this.”
“I suppose,” Sky stroked his chin. “But thank you. Whether we’re programmed or not, I’m here because of you.”
Legend shot him an intense glare, but no venom was behind it. “Thank me all you want, but don’t expect me to save your ass every time. Think before you act. Before you or someone gets killed.”
Sky looked away. “You’re right.” It took everything in him to mutter those two words.
As Sky turned to leave, the tension in the room lingered, unspoken but heavy. Legend’s gaze drifted to the hand mirror again, catching the faint lines of exhaustion etched into his reflection. He clenched his jaw.

“I added some extra parts to make it sturdier. There wasn’t enough support around the back, so I added a strap that goes under his armpit. Not only will it—” Purah suddenly stopped mid-sentence, her eyes lighting up. “Oh! Hi, Sky.”
Sky slumped into the chair next to Time, his movements heavy with exhaustion. They were seated at a large, cluttered table with people using various tools, gears, and gadgets. Purah was leaning over the mess, gesturing animatedly as she explained her modified invention. Time sat beside her, a plate of half-eaten food in front of him, his expression unreadable but attentive to Purah’s chatter.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hi,” Sky replied lowly.
Time slid his plate in front of Sky.
“How is he?” Referring to Legend.
“I think he’s mad at me,” Sky grabbed a fork and began to eat, though his grip was awkward, his injured hand clearly making every movement a struggle. “But I don’t blame him.”
Purah gave an empathetic smile, “Aw, come on. He’s probably not that mad. Give him time, he’ll come around eventually.” She swung around her screwdriver. “You heros are so stubborn. Don’t know when to stop, not even when it comes to grudges.”
Time chortled and rolled his eye. Purah smirked back at him.
“You don’t know him like I do,” Sky sighed. “He has every right to be angry with me.”
Time rubbed the bandages wrapped around his neck. He also got stitches. If his cut was any deeper, he would have bled out.
“Why do you say that?” Time asked, already knowing the answer.
Sky frowned at the plate and pushed it back to Time, “I feel so damn guilty. I should have listened to Link. He told me to not go near the guy and I did anyway. Now he’s injured. Why can’t I just… I don’t know.”
Purah put her screwdriver on the table, “Linky is fine. He’s just resting. He’ll be better in no time.”
”And I didn’t listen to Link either,” Time sympathized. “The blame isn’t on you”
Sky groaned. “It’s not the same!”
“How so?”
“He protected me. I wanted some control over this situation! When I first met Legend and you, I had this perfect plan in mind. Everything was supposed to work out. But nothing went the way it was supposed to!” His voice was hoarse.
Purah chuckled. She studied Sky’s troubled expression. “I didn’t realize how similar all of you are.” Her face was cheerful and teased. “Linky is the exact same. And I’m sure it’s the same for you, Time, but you’ve all somehow done it.”
Sky clenched his fist together ignoring the pain, “But it’s different! I failed this time. Link almost died. You almost died, Time. You and Legend!”
Time smiled slightly, trying to lighten the mood. Though the bandages around his neck didn’t help with that. “But we’re all alive. You didn’t have much of a choice.”
Sky shook his head with frustration taking over. “But I did. I’ve made a series of choices that led to that. And even then, I messed up. I’m supposed to make choices that keep people safe. Not endangered. ” he sighed and his voice grew quieter, “I am not meant to lead.”
“What made you feel like you needed to?” Time leaned slight, his expression firm.
“I told you, I used to be lazy,” Sky stared at the table. “I let whatever happens happen. Until Zelda… my Zelda was kidnapped. I couldn’t save her. I couldn’t catch up to her. I couldn’t defend her. She had to go into a deep sleep because I wasn’t strong enough. I promised myself I wouldn’t let that happen again and I failed.”
Purah groaned with exaggeration, “What’s with all this? Do you want our pity?”
“What? That’s not-“
“Breaking news: When you deal with this ancient evil nonsense, nothing will go as planned! You just have to modify your plan rather than force it through. You think my invention worked the first time? You think Link’s journey went as planned? You think he wanted all those people to die!? He has one arm for goddess sake! And he doesn’t complain about it! Learn from your mistakes, don’t mope over them!”
“I- I’m not!” Sky furrowed his brows. He turned to Time expecting him to counter Purah.
But Time nodded like he was taking in her advice. He turned to the plate of food and pushed it back in front of Sky. “No one expects you to be perfect, but yourself. You must forgive yourself before you can grow and learn. Everything starts with yourself.“
Sky looked down at his lap. His shoulders slouched, he traced his finger along the wrapping of the bandages. “It feels wrong to forgive myself. I feel like I don’t deserve it.”
Boy, had Time been there. He found it odd how right Purah was. They really are the same. They may be all different, but they are fighting all the same demons.
“It’s wrong not to. Forgivingness isn’t about forgetting or excusing what happened. Never forget your past nor your mistakes, but don’t let them hold you back. Everyone deserves that.”
When he spoke, there was a subtle tension in his jaw, exhoe of battles fought and lessons learned, but his presence radiated reassurance. His eye was warm and his old wisdom comforting.
Sky quietly scoffed as he took the fork. “Legend is right. You are an old man.”
Time chuckled and shrugged, “Hey, I’ve got at least forty years left in me.”
“Thank you,” Sky smiled. “And thank you, Purah.”
Purah picked up her invention. “Check out the renovations I made of my inventions!”

Legend took a deep breath. He hands on the doorknob before twisting in and heading in the room.
Zelda gasped as she quickly turned her head. She sat in a chair beside a bed. Laying in the covers was Link. He was knocked out. Zelda held his hand in her. Her face was sad.
“Hi,” Legend said, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes moved over the bed, searching for any sign of movement from Link. “Is he awake?”
Legend nodded slowly, his shoulders tense. Zelda gestured for him to come closer, her expression soft. He hesitated, the weight of the room pressing down on him, but finally stepped forward.
Standing beside the bed, Legend’s chest tightened. Link looked so fragile, from who he was the day before. The blanket was pulled up to his chin, and his long hair spilled across the pillow like strands of gold. His breathing was at least steady.
“He saved my life, y’know?” Legend said.
“I’m not surprised,” Zelda smiled faintly, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Legend crossed his arms. “I thought he was going to be fine.”
Zelda looked down, her fingers gently brushing against Link’s hand. “He is. It’s just that I worry about what will come after this. If this is how a fight is going to turn out, then I don’t know what’s best for him after this.”
Legend glanced at Link again, a pang of guilt twisting in his chest. He could still see flashes of the battle in his mind—the way Link without hesitation protected Sky. The way he moved to kill the Yiga even though he had one arm. The way he pushed Legend to the ground when an arrow almost hit him.
Legend frowned, crossing his arms tighter over his chest. “You’re acting like he’s made of glass or something.”
“I’m not-“
But, you are. I get it,” Legend interrupted, his tone sharper now. “It’s scary seeing him like this. But acting like he can’t handle it? Like he’s too weak to do what needs to be done? That’s not fair. Not to him.”
“No,” Zelda asserted herself. Her brows were low. “I’m not saying he’s weak. I know more than anybody in this world how capable he is. But I wonder, how many times can someone throw themselves into danger before it’s too much? Before they don’t come back?”
Legend pressed his lips together. She was right. Link had a nasty scar on the left side of his face. He had one arm. How much more does he have to lose before he could take a breath?
Gods, Legend had spent his whole time trying to set himself apart, to prove he wasn’t like everyone else. But in the end, he was just the same as the rest.
“Let’s just hope the gods don’t let us find out,” Legend sighed.
Chapter 12: Anchor

Link and Zelda talk. Zelda says something sensible and Link is not happy, but he confronts himself.

Enjoy a new chapter. I didn’t really edit. I’m close to the end, I can taste i. I thought of the end of the story before I thought about the rest. I thought about it while looking out the window and listening to music in Croatia. Anyways university is destroying every passion I have.

Link’s chest throbbed with a dull ache, the wound freshly sealed but not forgotten. The slash had left more than just a physical mark; it felt like a weight dragging him down. It had only been a couple of days, and though his body was healing, the scars always remain.
Zelda sat beside him, her movements careful as she wrapped fresh bandages around his chest. He couldn’t bring himself to look at her. What once had been effortless like facing danger, recovering without aid was now monumental. He hadn’t been strong enough to handle it alone. He’d needed to be saved.
The thought churned in his mind, tightening his chest further. Link kept his gaze fixed on the floor, shame welling up.
Zelda’s quiet cough broke the silence, pulling him back to the present. Her fingers smoothed the edges of the bandages with care, her touch light but steady.
“You know what this reminds me of?” Zelda chuckled. Link remained silent. If he even made a peep, he knew he’d crack.
Zelda continue.
“Over a hundred years ago we were on Death Mountain.”
Link grunted. The past had always been a sore subject for him. Most of the time, he tuned her out when she spoke of it. It wasn’t that he didn’t care, he cared too much. Each story of the person he used to be felt like a reminder of a life he could no longer recall, a version of himself he could never fully live up to.
For once, though, Zelda wasn’t pointing out differences between the past and the present. This time, she was drawing a connection. Link found himself listening more closely, despite himself.
“You had killed many Lynels and bokoblins, and moblins. You got a nasty cut on your arm,” Zelda walked over the other side of the room to a pitcher and cup.
Link looked down at his left arm. On the inner part was only a mark that trace from his wrist to his elbow. It has always been there since the day he woke up from the shrine. He never thought much of it, but he somehow knew it was connected to the story Zelda was telling.
“I was worried sick and scolded you for doing something so careless,” She smiled down at the cup of water she was pouring. “I wonder why I scolded you. It was your destiny to protect me and the people, so why did I scold you?
It was. It’s all he’s done and it’s all he wants to do.
She placed the cup of water on the table beside him. She then sat on the bed. He looked down at her fingers while she fiddled with them. Link just stared at her, waiting for her to continue.
She bit her lip, “I scolded you because I cared for you more than myself.”
“Zelda, don’t-” Link voice cracked, his chest tightened
“I mean it,” She clenched her fingers. “If you ever died for me, I don’t think I could live with myself. So on that day on Death Mountain, I scolded you, then I bandaged you up. Because I care about you. And I know you’re the same.”
She turned his head towards Link and as soon as her eyes met him, his face turned hot.
Link sighed. The story had swirled in his head, bringing a rush of sensation: he could taste the dust in the air, feel the melting heat of the mountains and a tingling ache in his arm. He could feel a rush of blood through his veins. The same thrill he got while fighting.
Link sadly smiled, “I…” he paused, sifting through the memory. Then without looking, he finished his sentence, “…actually remember that.”
Zelda took his hand. “Really?”
He glanced down at her hand on top of his, her warmth so grounding. He nodded slowly, “I remember you. I remember you were angry. Your face was red.”
Zelda nodded. She pressed her lips in a thin line. Her watery eyes were a window to the past. “Yeah, I was. And I was scared for you. That’s all I could do at the time.”
“No,” Link shook his head. “You’ve done and sacrificed so much more than anyone. I thought I was protecting you, but it was always the other way around.”
Zelda shook her head. “I wouldn’t be here without you.”
Link hesitated. He felt so raw, like he was a thin wall bracing himself during a storm.
“You gave up everything,” He swallowed hard, trying to steady his voice. “Your life, your freedom, dreams, your health, your humanity for goddess sake. You did it to save Hyrule, the people, me.”
The air between them felt thick. He tilted his head down to catch the look on Zelda. Her presence was always strong and unbothered, but now, he could see her vulnerability prevail. He could see it deep in her eyes. There was a deep dolor in her eyes that Link only saw a few times.
Zelda shook her head, like she was frustrated, “I didn’t do any of this alone. You were always there for me, even if you didn’t realize.”
Link brushed his thumb up and down her palm.
“Our destinys seemed to always intertwine, but,” Zelda felt a knot in her throat. She already missed Link, even though he was right there. “You have a new destiny. And your destiny isn’t staying here with me any longer.”
“What?!” Link yelped. He pulled away his hand. “I can’t leave you. I just— how can you say that?”
“Because I care about you,” Zelda gaze was soft, but her voice stern. “Because I know you and I know that you are not thriving here. Your destiny is out in the wild.”
Link stood up, his hand in a fist. “I don’t care about destiny. I don’t care about what anyone says. You’re the reason why I’m here. I can’t just leave you here alone. I can’t leave my people here alone. What if we get another Burwar case?”
Zelda smiled but her eyes showed no humor. She coughed a bit.
“It was never supposed to be about me,” She looked down.
She squinted her eyes. It hurt to acknowledge the truth, but she had and so did Link.
““How are you supposed to help people if you’re locked up here with me?.” She cried. “How are you supposed to help people if you never make it back from a fight? How can you live like that? You have to do what you love and I know you don’t love this.”
Link felt a suffocating pressure on his chest. He balled his hands in a fist, he was so mad. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Zelda looked at him with frustration, but Link could tell she could crack any moment.
“I can’t leave you,” He finally muttered with a grim tone.
Zelda's eyes carried the weight of everything she’s done. She reached for Link’s arm to settle him. “I know it’s hard. Believe me, I know. But if you stay, you’ll be denying who you are and what you’re meant to be. You’ve always been someone who finds strength in the freedom to roam, to protect, to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. You can‘t do that here.”
Link shook his head. He rubbed his palm into his eyes. It was like his world was falling apart. The thought of leaving her behind was something he never imagined.
“And me?” His voice faltered. “I can’t go on without you.”
Zelda tightened her grip. “I’m not asking you to forget me. Don’t ever forget me. But your life is beyond me.”
The weight of her words dragged him back down on the bed. His gaze fell to the floor, trying to piece and argument, anything that would make him stay. “What about you? What happens if I’m not here to protect you? To protect anyone?”
His hands gripped his knees tightly, frustration and doubt surging through him. Who was he trying to fool? He wasn’t the warrior he used to be. Not as strong, not as sharp. He was a shadow of the hero he once was. A part of him believed he was already failing her.
Zelda's eyes softened with her grip. “I’ll face it along with my people beside me. We are stronger now.
You now need to save yourself.”
Link shot up his head at her words. “I don’t need saving,” he said defensively, but it sounded hollow, even in his own ears.
Zelda turned away, her composure fracturing like glass under too much pressure. When she spoke, her voice was unsteady. “Don’t you see it?” she said. “If you stay here, you’ll lose yourself even more. Piece by piece and I hate myself for letting it happen.” Her voice cracked, trembling with the force of her confession.
Tears welled in her eyes as she turned back to face him, the full weight of her pain laid bare.
“I can’t bear to watch you like this anymore. This place… it’s suffocating you, and I know it. I know you. You get so angry and you barely find joy in anything. You have the chance to help people, to make a difference, to live. And yet you choose to stay here, like this. You would’ve never. I don’t know you anymore.”
Her hand reached for his again, but he pulled it away like she was a disease. He stood up. Zelda said something, bur all he heard was the thumping in his chest.
“What if I don’t ever want to come back?” He Said with venom as he tried to jab at her.
“Then I’ll still love you and wait for yo,” She simply answered.
Link stood there, fist clenched at his sides, every muscle in his body taut with conflict. Zelda’s words echoed in his mind. He looked at her, standing her ground despite the tears streaking her face, and the shame hit him harder then the slice on his chest. He’d hurt her by staying, by clinging to the one thing he thought he could protect.
Her words burned like fire, and Link couldn’t stay. He turned abruptly, and strode toward the door. He didn’t look back, couldn’t bear to see the pain in her eyes. His throat was tight, his chest heavy with emotions he couldn’t untangle. The sound of the door closing behind him felt final, like a piece of him was being left behind.
Ass he walked through the night, the conversation raced through his mind. He groaned in frustration. No, he was angry. He was angry at himself. He felt like a fool. He hated that he made her feel like that. He hated that he made her cry. He hated how he became someone where people had to tiptoe around.
But underneath everything, he was scared.
His steps fastened as he reached the gate's exit. He brought his left hand to his right, but nothing was there. He felt where his arm used to be. It was all just a reminder. If he was smarter, Zelda could’ve been healthy. Thousands of people would have lived on.
If he couldn’t protect people back then. How could he do it with one arm? The knight and hero he was before felt as if they were someone else. He clenched his jaw. Outside the Lookout Landing was a world that demanded the strength he wasn’t sure he had anymore.
He sat down and stared out. He thought of the Yiga attack. How the Yiga targeted him and for a moment, he accepted his death before Legend pushed him out of the way. The thought made his heart drop.
For the first time in a while, Link allowed him self to sit with his fear. He didn’t bury it under a mask of fake confidence. Maybe, if he could confront it, he could finally feel like he wasn’t stuck.
