In the old days, they would have met in the forest, drawn to one another—restless and always moving until they finally found home.
They wouldn’t have needed words.
They wouldn’t have even needed names with which to call one another by.
They would have known one another by smell, by sight, by the beating of one another’s hearts.
They would stand, barefoot and nude before one another, stripped bare and exposed for all they had to offer as mates.
They would have scented one another, rubbing cheek to cheek, nose to nose. They would have hunted together, shown one another how well they could provide in their shared partnership.
They would have groomed together, bathed in streams together and kissed berry juice from one another’s lips as they lay on rocks to dry in the sunlight.
