Work Text:
Satoru took hours to leave the KFC where his heart was shattered. He sat in the fast food restaurant in a daze, the world around him fading to gray. All the color he sees, all the joy he’s learned has dulled. Suguru came into his life bringing meaning to fighting to living only to leave him for a nonsensical mission.
He leaves when the KFC closes, the workers having to kick him out. He walks aimlessly for another hour until Shoko finds him. She drags him back to the school where he has to explain what happened. He feels the judgment of higher ups from Yaga but he doesn’t care he just Suguru back.

Toji’s kid looks almost exactly like him even at six. The kid is way too angsty and mean for a first grader at least he thinks since he wasn’t normal himself. The kids sister was nicer and more welcoming than her little brother though Satoru could see the weariness on her.
He sticks around longer than he probably should but he sees the two kids struggle and he hears the ghost of Suguru tell him it’s wrong to leave two kids alone. He does leave eventually only to come back the next day and the day after that. He spoils the two kids, giving them a life Toji wouldn’t be able to give them if he was alive.
Fushiguro Megumi was the kids name, an unusual one for a boy but Satoru thought it fit the kid. The kid wouldn’t realize most likely ever that he is a blessing that he helps Satoru’s worsening mental state. He’s rude and cranky but also touched starved and lonely. He loves his sister and is annoyed by Satoru.
Fushiguro Tsumiki was the sister's name, a beautiful name for the thoughtful girl. The girl takes on too much responsibility so Megumi doesn’t have to. Satoru fills in for the things she can’t or he doesn’t want her to worry about. He handles the food, the bills and the clothes but she insists on cooking, cleaning, and helping Megumi with school. She’s emotionally drained and acts like she’s in her 30s but still loves coloring and playing with her dolls and cries when bugs are killed.
Satoru loves his kids, loves them so much that he slowly begins to rebuild himself. He starts to take money and food more seriously. He looks into good schools for the two and gets them clothes that they like. He helps Megumi with his cursed technique, loving the kids' excitement at The dog's appearance. He helps Tsumiki with her hair and learns how to do makeup, loving the giggles she lets out at the mess she made on his face.
Satoru never thought he could live again after Suguru but maybe he could with these kids.

“Gojo Megumi got into a fight again today!” Tsumiki yelled out to him once the two got home from school. Satoru sat at the kitchen table of the apartment going over finances hating that he has to catalog every purchase. The kids rush in running away from the harsh winter outside.
“Did he now?” He stretches his long aching limbs smiling at the two kids. Tsumiki is now 12 and in her last year of elementary school. Megumi is 10 and has one more year before middle school.
“Yup he beat up a bully but he was way too aggressive.” Tsumiki is stuck between being proud and disappointed in her younger brother. Proud that her little brother stood up against bullies but disappointed that he beat them up when they had no chance.
“They were hitting a third grader, they deserved to be beat up.” Megumi said, uncaring of his sisters disappointment. The two kids take off their winter clothes arguing as they do. Satoru smiles at the two kids as they argue about the rights and wrongs of beating up other children.
“Well good job at winning Megumi.” Satoru laughed as he pats Megumi’s squishy head. The two kids are sat next to him on opposite sides. Megumi frowns at him but the slight blush on his face gives him away. Tsumiki gives a little tsk in disappointment but is smiling anyway.
“Don’t encourage him, Gojo!” Tsumiki chides him, hitting his arm and pouting for effect. Satoru out of the corner of his eye see Megumi stick his tongue out at his sister.
“Sorry, sorry your right Megumi you do dishes tonight instead of your kind sister.” Satoru said to keep peace because honestly he doesn’t see much wrong with Megumi’s behavior but Tsumiki does so he’ll only slightly reprimand the kid.
“Ugh do I have to.” Megumi grumbles out annoyed at the older two. Tsumiki smiles at the punishment though Satoru thinks she’s just happy at the fact she doesn’t have to do dishes.
“Yup have fun Gumi.” Tsumiki says mockingly with a cheeky smile.
“You two are the worst.”
———
The day Tsumiki falls into a coma is the worst day. He almost goes catatonic like he did when him and Suguru broke up but he couldn’t not with a sobbing Megumi at his side. Satoru didn’t cry, he didn't crumble, didn’t even sniffle, not when he had a broken fourteen year old in his arms.
Tsumiki just turned 16 with so much life to live and now she lays motionless in a bed cursed. Satoru looks at his little girl, the one he raised basically dead and he doesn’t cry. Tsumiki was the best of them and she wouldn’t want him to cry, not when Megumi was.

December 24, 2017 Christmas Eve. This day is meant to be a couples holiday day. A day for couples to get together and give gifts to each other. It’s a day of love and joy, one that brings happiness to people.
December 24, 2017 Christmas Eve. This day Satoru has blood on his hands. A day where the love of his life lay dead in the snow from his own hands. Suguru’s body lays still in the snow, body red and cold. Satoru stands over the dead body with nothing in his heart.
Satoru leaves to go home to the place where his son waits for him. He leaves no tears falling till his son sees him. He breaks for once in years, he breaks and poor Megumi has to hold him through it. Tsumiki would be disappointed in him.

Itadori Yuuji is an interesting kid, one that Satoru enjoys being around. The kid gets him — not the sad lonely gay way — he gets the optimism that comes from pessimism, he gets joking in rough times and most importantly he gets the need to be nonsensical.
Yuuji is smart but definitely airheaded with how little he thinks things through. He is quick and strong in ways that remind him of Toji but somehow doesn’t have Satoru wanting to use purple on him. He is sweet, thoughtful and kind with a strong will. Yuuji is most importantly doomed.
Yuuji is set to die by Satoru hands most likely. It’s the reason he hides a finger were no one could find it. He refuses to have this lively kid be killed by the corrupt system especially when Megumi looks at him like he hung the stars themselves.
He sees his son look at Yuuji as if was an angel and orbit him like he’s a sun. Satoru sees himself in Megumi and scares him as time moves by. The closer the boys get the closer the past is to coming back. The wheel of time has moved back to the beginning and Satoru is scared. He is scared of his son’s first love ending like his own.
Yuuji is a good kid and he gets Satoru but he scares him anyway.

“Did you know soulmates exist?” Yuuji one day asks a little after the bridge mission. The two were doing one on one training but at the moment was taking a break. They were sitting next to each other silently when he randomly brought it up.
“What?” Satoru looks over at his student with raised eyebrows. Yuuji looks at him, his face serious as he takes a comedically slow bit of his lunch. The two stared at each other waiting as Satoru waited for Yuuji.
“Soulmates exist.” Yuuji says unhelpfully after he was done chewing. He takes another bite like he didn’t drop something random from out of no we’re.
“Yuuji what the hell are you talking about.”
“Soulmates, I don't know what else to say.”
“Oh I don’t know maybe why you decided to randomly drop that soulmates exist when we are eating lunch.”
Yuuji stares at Satoru before groaning. Yuuji takes a big gulp of his water and then begins to explain.
“Everyone’s soul is made of colors that represent people they are soul bonded to and when they touch the colors come together.” Yuuji explains rushing through it all without pausing to give Satoru time to process. “When i touch people i see these bonds so with you i touch you and at first i see pink since we’re soulmates and then i see your other soul colors.”
“We’re soulmates?” Satoru is soulmates with his student. That has to be some type of violation.
“Yup, you’re also soulmates with Fushiguro, Nanamin, Ieiri-san, and one other color that I don't know.”
“Don’t know the color or the person?”
“Person, the color is black.”
Black, the color is black. Suguru was his soulmate, the love of his life, his one and only, was his soulmate. If he knew then would Suguru have stayed or would’ve Satoru gone with him? If soulmates were a known thing would life have gone differently.
Would Satoru’s hands be red with his blood?
“Gojo-Sensei you're crying!” Yuuji yells out and panics at the normally cheerful man. Satoru’s face is wet with unfiltered tears one’s he’s refused to shed since Suguru’s death.
“Suguru.” Satoru smiles slightly when he says the name, unable to hold back his fondness. Maybe in another life they’ll be happy because if they are soulmates in this life they will be in another.
“Sensei?” Yuuji's worried face comes into view, making Satoru’s heart clench.
“I’m all right, Yuuji promise.” Satoru ruffles Yuuji's hair and smiles through the tears that are still silently falling.
“You sure?”
“I’ve never been more sure, Yuuji.”
———
“So I hear we’re soulmates.”
“Shut up.”
“How dare you say that to your dad.”
“You're not my dad or my soulmate!”
“Yuuji would disagree on both fronts.”
“Well I’m not him.”
“I’m your dad~ I’m your soulmate~”
“Kill yourself.”
