Chapter 1: Birthdays and violins

Chapter Text

I laid on the couch and stared at the ceiling. Today was too long. My phone buzzed next to me. Probably Jamie. The text read “hey… I’ll be home late tonight. I have to finish an article that’ll published tomorrow. Love you!” I slightly smiled and closed my eyes. I ran down the factors of my case and when I completed that I moved to my violin. I had been writing my own pieces, and I’d show them to Jamie. He was always in awe at my playing, even though I felt it was mediocre at best. I heard the slow opening of the door. Jamie with his goofy smile and a cake in his hand and balloons and a bag in another.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”

I checked the date. Oh it was my birthday.

“You completely forgot it was your birthday did you?”

I laughed, “you know me so well. What flavor is the cake?”

He slowly set it down and let go of the black  and lavender balloons.

“Red velvet.” He said with a dramatic swoop of his hands.

“Doyle‘s 23.” I read. I slightly laughed. Curt , straight to the points, no more words than necessary. My perfect cake. “Thank you.” I said while he rummaged through the cabinets for a lighter and candles.

“Please don’t tell me you will sing the Happy Birthday song.”

He grinned and lit the candles up and began to sing happy birthday. I cupped my hand over his mouth to make him stop. He moved my hand and kissed my wrist. While I was still recovering from the gesture he quickly finished the song. I shook my head.

“Why? Watson. Why?!”

“Charlotte it’s a tradition.” He said with jazz hands. I couldn’t help but smile. I love him so much.

He took out of his bag a container of mint chocolate chip ice cream and a wrapped gift. I already knew what it was the second he pulled it out. He handed me the gift, excited to see my reaction. I opened it to find the new violin I wanted. Beautiful oak wood , glossy delicately placed in velvet case an with leather coating the outside.

I kissed him. I pulled his head closer to me as he held my waist in one and and my face in the other. He spun me around and I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek as well.

“Oh you forgot to blow out the candle and make a wish.”

“ Watson what could I get that is better than what I have now?”

He smiled and I blew out the candles.

We cut the cake and topped it with mint chocolate chip ice cream. I rested my head on his shoulder and said, “thank you.”
