A yelp escaped Spencer’s lips as his apartment was suddenly coated into darkness. He clasped his hand in front of his mouth, elbowing Derek who was shaking with silent laughter.
“Shut up!” He said. “What happened?”
“Power outage. Stay here, I will check to see if it’s just your apartment or the entire building,” Derek said, “don’t wander around. You are already clumsy enough when you have the ability to see.”
“If I knew there wasn’t a risk of me shattering something I would have thrown my couch cushions at your head,” Spencer muttured.
“Oh, I am shaking in my boots,” Derek grinned as he got up.
Spencer could hear the man shuffle around and he huffed. He had finally, finally, gotten Derek hooked onto Doctor Who and it was just getting good. They were in the midst of an important episode and now? Now they wouldn’t even have time to finish it.
“It’s your whole building. Does it have a backup generator?” Derek asked.
Spencer could hear the front door lock again. “I am not sure. I would assume so I have some candles in the kitchen. First cabinet to the left of the fridge. Middle shelf. Do you want my help?”
“Got it pretty boy,” Derek called back.
Soon enough the two were surrounded by a handful of candles, showering the room in an orangey-yellow light.
“I understand if you want to leave, this is not really what we had planned,” Spencer said, glancing over at Derek.
“Oh, I don’t mind. I know you don’t like the dark,” Derek said matter of factly.
“I am sure it will come back on soon,” Spencer said. “It’s also not the first time it has happened and I fared just alright on my own.”
Aside from the one time Spencer had freaked out when the power had gone out and he had called Derek in a panic when it hadn’t turned back on after twenty minutes. Those twenty minutes had been the longest minutes of his life. Spencer had hugged Derek embarrassingly tight when the man had finally shown up to keep him company. Afterwards Spencer had learned that Derek had left in the middle of his first date with some pretty girl he had gotten to know. Spencer had felt guilty, but had also experienced a scary amount of giddiness at the thought that Derek had just dropped everything for him with a single, teary eyed call about how scared he was in the dark.
“Did you know that the average American experiences around 5 to 8 hours of power outage a year?” He continued as he glanced over at Derek. “I have experienced approximately three hours of power outage so far this year so this isn’t anything that should be unexpected.”
“All the statistics in the world wouldn’t cause me to leave you alone right now,” Derek said, “You are good company with or without your geeky shows.”
“You liked said geeky show!” Spencer protested.
Derek snorted, “I have a feeling that I would like anything you would show me.”
At that Spencer rolled his eyes. “What is that even supposed to mean?”
“Oh, never mind, pretty boy. I am sure that one day your brain will figure it out,” Derek said.
Spencer huffed quietly. That didn't quite sound like a compliment at all. Spencer wouldn’t be surprised if Derek was poking fun at him. The man did that often. Spencer had quickly learned in his first year, or first months even, at the bureau that it was all a form of friendly teasing. It was nothing like the teasing he had experienced in high school and primary school.
Spencer shivered. Now that the power had gone out the apartment’s temperature was dropping fast. He tucked his legs up and wrapped his arms around his knees. The candles’ warmth was doing a bare minimum at keeping the temperature at a level Spencer thought acceptable.
“Don’t tell me you are cold,” Derek said, raising a brow.
Spencer glanced over at his friend who was only wearing a t-shirt and some long jeans while he himself was wrapped in a sweater and a cardigan.
“It is freezing in here,” he protested. “It’s not my fault you are always warm. I don’t know how you do it. I was just about comfortable with the heat working properly.”
“I don’t even know why I am still surprised. You are always cold,” Derek said.
Spencer tensed up for a second when the man wrapped an arm around his shoulders and pulled him closer.
“I could just grab a blanket-” he squealed out as he was pressed into the warmth of Derek’s side.
Derek shook his head. “I don’t want you stumbling around. Unless you are uncomfortable with this of course then by all means go and grab a blanket. I don’t want to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. I just know that you don’t mind a cuddle every now and again-”
Spencer wasn’t used to Derek’s rambling. He was used to his confident demeanor and his ability to impress any and everyone. This was a different side of Derek Spencer didn't get to see often and he felt himself relaxing into the man’s warm side.
Somehow he radiated heat and he smelled good and Spencer had fantasized about curling up with Derek like this for longer than he dared to admit so instead of protesting he just shook his head.
“I am not uncomfortable, I was just surprised- I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” Spencer said.
Derek laughed at that. “Oh, you aren’t making me uncomfortable, Reid, I promise.”
Spencer snuggled closer, an arm draped over Derek’s waist and he rested his head against the man’s shoulder. “I don’t understand how you are this warm.”
Derek chuckled at that. “I will keep the inappropriate joke I had in my mind to myself.”
“That is probably for the best,” Spencer agreed.
Spencer wasn’t sure how long they state like that in comfortable silence. He only occasionally perked up when something popped up in his mind that he thought that Derek should know.
Derek just sat there, listening to his rambles without interrupting. Occasionally his fingers would rub and down Spencer’s arm or brush across his shoulder and Spencer enjoyed the gentle touch every time; melting into the warmth that was Derek Morgan and his insanely good feeling hugs.
He didn’t know when he fell asleep. The apartment had still been coated in darkness when he had done so. He had been so comfortable; warm and surrounded by someone he cared about a little too much.
When the lights finally turned back on Derek didn’t have it in him to wake Spencer up so he just stretched his legs and got a little more comfortable; his own eyes falling shut. He didn’t want this little moment to end. Neither of them did.
