Work Text:
"Where were you? What were you doing that was more important than answering my texts?! Am I a joke to you?!" Velvet's voice cracks and tears fill her eyes as she yells at her girlfriend, Orchid. "Well?!"
"Vel, I was just out with some friends.. my phone was off-" Orchid reaches out for Velvet's shoulder, but Velvet smacks it away.
"Don't make excuses! I'm not going to listen to your lies! You get to know your idol, but she's not as amazing as you expected, so you abandon her. Fine. I never needed you anyway. You're just like everyone else. We are DONE."
Velvet runs to her room, tears flooding, slamming the door behind her. Orchid stares blankly at the door, holding her tears in. She knew of Velvet's trauma, she knew how much Velvet struggled to communicate, and she knew this would happen over and over. She really didn't know how to comfort Velvet this time.
Velvet is sitting on her bed, clutching her legs as she sobs into her knees. Orchid was going to leave her, just like everyone else. She had realized Velvet was not the perfect person she was supposed to be and was disappointed. How could she stay with a fraud? Velvet reaches for her phone and texts Veneer.
Vel: What the hell am I supposed to do when everyone always betrays me?
Ven: Wdym? What's going on?
Vel: Orchid ignored my texts. She keeps making excuses, but I'm not falling for it! I told her we were over.
Ven: M'kay, first off, I know you. You're reading into things way too damn much and overreacting. She can't be on her phone 24/7 and practically be a slave for you.
Vel: It's not hard to answer texts when there's literally a fucking notification! I needed her, and she wasn't there. I can't trust her anymore.
Ven: Sis, you really should be talking to her about this. And let her get a sentence out, for goodness sake.
Vel: But she won't listen. I know she won't.
Ven: You only think she won't listen because she tries to explain herself instead of immediately apologizing. Just talk to her.
Vel: Ugh. Whatever.
Velvet throws her phone across the room onto a laundry pile. She may as well try to hear Orchid out. She slowly cracks the door open, but Orchid isn't there. She fucking left. She abandoned me. The front door swings open as an out-of-breath Orchid walks in, dropping a bag. She looks towards her girlfriend and smiles.
"Vel, I... I know you have trouble communicating. I thought that maybe if I got you your favourite snacks, you would feel a bit better and have an easier time talking to me. Will you try?"
Velvet is stunned. She came back? Why? Does she care? No, this is a trick. Is it? Why would she trick me? "I'll.. I'll hear your side of the story." With thoughts flooding her mind, Velvet walked shamefully towards the small table in the kitchen, sitting and crossing her arms.
Orchid sets out the snacks she got for Velvet, and they sit in silence while Velvet eats. She doesn't exactly look happy, but Orchid can tell Velvet is enjoying it.
"Whenever you're ready to listen, let me know. I'm here." Orchid smiles at Velvet once again. Velvet opens her mouth to say something but stops herself. She takes another bite and slowly nods her head.
"Vel, I cannot be on my phone ready to answer your texts all the time. I have a life outside of our relationship. I do not exist to serve you, and I will not treat you like a god. I am there for you when I can be, and you do the same for me. You probably think I'm only with you because you're famous, but that's not true! Yes, I found you through your fame, but I stayed for who you truly are, not the persona you play. I am extremely grateful that you gave me a chance. I know we can get through most of our issues if we work on it together, but we both need to try."
Velvet looks at Orchid with shaky eyes and bites her lip, trying to think about what to say. "I just don't feel like you love me when you're gone for so long. It's like you abandon me."
"Then.. what would make you feel better when I'm not here? Is there anything I can do for you?"
"Just.. check up on me when you're out. Please. It's unbearable when I haven't heard from you in hours. I just need something, anything."
"I'll do that. It may not be as often as you want, but I will check on you. Is it alright if it's just a text?" Orchid attempts to touch Velvet's hand, and although she flinches, she doesn't back away.
"Yes. Just don't half-ass it or anything. Show me that you genuinely care.." Velvet glances at their hands, their fingers now intertwined.
"I'll make sure I give you my full attention when I check up on you. I do care about you, Vel." Orchid holds Velvet's face with her other hand, rubbing her cheek. "Are you feeling better?"
Velvet closes her eyes and nuzzles Orchid's hand, "I am. And I'm sorry for lashing out at you. I wasn't thinking clearly."
Orchid plants a kiss on Velvet's forehead and pulls her close for a hug. "I understand why you did. We'll work on that, yeah?"
Velvet agrees, and the two decide to spend the rest of the night discussing boundaries. It might take a while, but they're slowly understanding each other more and more with each passing day.
