Work Text:
Kageyama normally spent his birthday alone. Especially now that he was an adult. He had way too many things on his plate to worry about the 22nd anniversary of his birth. Which is why he was working today.
The team wanted to have a practice match today so he was on his way to that when he got a message from Ushijima telling him to head to the bar. It was a strange request especially from his stoic team member who almost never drank.
The dark-haired man changed directions and walked towards the bar. He recognized Ushijima's car as he walked up. So he really was here. Kageyama walked into the bar and looked around, he couldn't find his teammate anywhere.
"Excuse me?"
Kageyama turned around to see a bartender standing beside him "Yeah?"
"Are you Kageyama Tobio?"
"I am."
The bartender smiled as she ushered him to a back room "Please come this way!"
What the heck?
Kageyama followed the bartender to the back room cautiously, he didn't want to be murdered.
"Enjoy yourself sir!"
Oh..maybe not murdered by her but a stripper!
The dark-haired man walked into the backroom, it was dark for a second until the light flicked on.
"Surprise!! Happy Birthday!!"
Kageyama jumped as he took in the faces around the room. The past Karasuno team, Oikawa-Senpai and Iwaizumi-Senpai, and of course his current team. And after a few long awkward moments of silence Hinata ran up to him, a huge grin present on his face.
"Were you surprised YamaYama?"
"I think I lost a couple years off my life."
Oikawa walked up and patted him on the back "There there Tobio-Chan! Have a drink!"
Kageyama greeted the rest of the party guests and drank his first drink of the night. The first of many.
Someone had brought a cake and cut it so people could eat it, the cake was blueberry flavored. Which surprised him but it didn’t taste bad at all. He was starting to feel buzzed a short while later, a not that common occurrence. What the hell was he drinking?
"Oi Boke, what kind is this?" He asked, gesturing to his red solo cup.
"I didn't choose the drinks. Ushiwaka did."
Oh yeah, leave the person who only drinks a small amount of beer occasionally to buy all the alcohol.
He stumbled towards the older man "Ushijima! What is this?"
The older man looked at him, "Red.”
“What?”
Hoshiumi leaned in to whisper into his ear “He drank some of this too.”
‘Wonderful.’
Kageyama drank the rest of his mystery alcohol and went to go look for a bottle to get to the bottom of this. The white-haired man was on his tail, leaving Ushijima to stand by himself.
“Just relax and don’t mind it!”
“Are you poisoning me?”
“No! I’m just saying to chill!”
The buzzed birthday boy bumped into Tsukishima of all people, the two stared at each other for a moment before the blonde smirked “You look like you’re having a great time.”
“Shut up!”
In a huff he pushed past him, heading towards the table to search for bottles.
Hoshiumi poured him another cup of alcohol and handed it to him, he hesitated to take it but ultimately took it anyways. He wasn’t going to pass up free drinks. He took the bottle that the white-haired man had and examined it.
“Bourbon.”
He relaxed a bit, that was okay right?
Now that he knew what it was, he sipped it gingerly. Not that he wasn’t before. Okay he wasn’t but that was to figure out what it was. That’s probably how he got buzzed so quickly. Kageyama spoke to some of the guests and slowly but surely was having trouble keeping his words from sounding slurred.
He was normally decent enough with alcohol so why was he getting drunk so fast?
Which now leads to Kageyama sitting in a chair trying to make sense of things going on. It seemed everything was just a flash of colors in the bright light.
“Kageyama?”
Said man looked up at what he assumed was the silver-haired man.
“Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m feeling fine!” He in a soft slurred manner, giggling a bit at his quiet voice. Which now worried a few people listening in on the conversation because everyone just stops what they’re doing and listens to conversations.
Sorry a little fourth wall there but seriously. Why do they drop everything to listen to a conversation?
Suga took the solo cup away from Kageyama who tried to fight back but barely had any strength to.
“You seem way too drunk already.”
“It’s my birthday!”
Suga nodded “It is your birthday but you still need to take it easy on the alcohol. You’ll regret it tomorrow.”
The dark-haired man did not appreciate being treated like a child and he stormed out of the room. Startling a few people in the bar.
Hoshiumi and Hinata ran after him, surprisingly not that drunk, and stopped him before he got too far.
“Slow down Bakayama!”
Kageyama looked at the two shorties and pouted, startling them too.
“I think Suga-San was right!”
“I’ll take him home. It’s been a while since I drank.”
The dark-haired man was coaxed back into the room to get his coat by the white-haired man. Hoshiumi told everyone and they all said their goodbyes, deciding it was a good idea to stop here.
The white-haired man convinced Ushijima to let him drive his car and the three were off. They all stayed at Kageyama’s apartment since it was close and that meant Hoshiumi wouldn’t be on the road any longer than he had to be. Ushijima was still drunk from the one cup which was a surprise and he collapsed onto the couch as soon as they got there.
Kageyama was guided into his room and laid on the bed, he was mumbling protests and trying to get out of bed but he was having a hard time.
“Happy Birthday, Kageyama!” The white-haired man said softly as he exited the room to check on Ushijima.
The dark-haired man laid there for a bit and ended up falling asleep. He was going to have a hangover the next morning, there’s no doubt about that. But at least he didn’t spend his birthday alone this year.
