Chapter Text
“—and so we will have to make sure we have the desserts done early, just to be certain everything is ready. What's next on the agenda?”
Trey was deep in thought. It was something that was happening a lot lately. It made sense. There was a lot that was on his mind with the school year coming to an end.
The prior two years, summer vacation had always been something he'd looked forward to. The dawn of this summer, however, was a reminder that he would not be at the school next year. Fourth year students always went off to do internships and research. He would be back, but he had a sinking feeling that he'd never really be a Night Raven Academy student again.
No, at this point he was something completely different.
An alumnus.
Well, as long as he passed his exams, of course.
Trey wasn't very worried about the exams. If anyone asked, Trey felt he was worried just the right amount as far as he was concerned. It never bode well to go into any kind of test with overconfidence.
A sharp chorus of snaps jostled him out of his thoughts. For a second, Trey forgot that Riddle was with him.
Which was, quite frankly, ridiculous.
Chagrin with amiable shame, the green haired teen looked at his much shorter friend. His tilted smile had just the hint of apology.
“Sorry, Riddle. I was thinking about something.”
“Oh?”
Trey laughed to himself as he took in the eagerness on the other boy’s face and in his voice.
“No, I'm not going to share with the class on this one. It's unlikely it matters, in any case.”
He shrugged as if to say that he didn't really mind that whatever it was that had been on his mind the moment Riddle snapped him out of his stupor was unlikely.
A doubtful look had crossed his best friend's face, but the other boy disregarded it with a wave.
“Then it sounds like it's all for the best. Which is ideal with all the work we have left to do. As much as I enjoy classes, I'd sooner they be done today so that we can get everything else prepared. We'll finish going over the agenda after I grab my books.”
With that, Riddle turned about face and headed off toward the lockers. Trey, having no other choice and a duty to his Housewarden, followed after him.
As he did, Trey’s treacherous mind slipped back into deep thought.
Even with all the things there were to worry healthily about, there was one subject in particular that was taking up a lot of space in his mind.
He looked up, recognizing where they were now and swallowing hard. His eyes shifted as casually as he could manage to Vil Schoenheit’s locker.
The other third year happened to look up at the very same time and, after a brief moment, smiled warmly at him. Just as he had that one time. And many times since.
Honestly, Trey considered them friends now. Prior to the day he'd talked the blonde into allowing himself sweets from time to time, Trey wouldn't have said the same. It was as if that one interaction unlocked some hidden achievement that allowed him the opportunity to become friends with someone who was so vastly different from himself.
If anything, Trey was fascinated by Vil. The Pomfiore Housewarden was an enigma if there ever was one. Vil liked people to think that celebrity and fame were the end all be all of who he was as a person.
Trey had come to find in the few months since their friendship had truly started that the Vil that Vil wanted people to see was only surface level. Underneath that was the real Vil Schoenheit. The Vil that was as insecure as everyone else. The Vil that was a complete nerd. The Vil that was a scholar. The Vil that was a friend.
And now Trey had another to add to that particular list.
The Vil that Trey was falling for.
Trey smiled back before returning his attention to Riddle with another apologetic smile.
The other boy put his hands on his hips as he stopped, reaching his locker. He paid it no mind at the moment as his attention’s sight was locked on his Vice Housewarden.
“It's not like you to be so… absentminded.” His sharp bluish gray eyes flitted toward Vil and back. His gaze was calculating, but if he found any answers hidden in Trey's carefully neutral expression, he said nothing. Instead, he tilted his head ever so slightly to the side.
“Since when are you two so amiable?”
Trey shrugged with a smile. Despite his best efforts, the Heartslabyul Vice Housewarden couldn't stop himself from glancing back at his crush. The full-time influencer and celebrity, part-time student, and Housewarden was in deep conversation with Rook, Epel, and Jack Howl from Savannahclaw.
Trey had never been a very jealous person. He believed that all people were envious at some time or other. It was to be expected in a profession where power and skill meant further opportunities. However, seeing Vil turn the warm smile on Jack had Trey turning away quickly with a flash of annoyance.
“Ah, so it is like that. I had begun to wonder…”
Trey did not miss the smirk on Riddle’s face. He sighed.
Jeer coming in 3… 2…
“You know…” Riddle began, almost drawing out the second word for effect. Trey ignored it. Riddle got like this when something he'd hypothesized turned out to be correct. With a defeated sigh, he waited for the rib. “I never thought an influencer would be your ‘type’.”
Trey feigned impassive confusion. “I have no idea what you're talking about.”
“Don't be ridiculous, Trey. You're a realist—”
“And a romantic.”
“And a romantic, but a realist first.”
Riddle was right. Sometimes, Trey wished he wasn't as much of a realist as he was.
“How long has this been a thing,” Riddle asked as he finally opened his locker, exchanging the morning’s books for the books he'd need for the next set of classes.
“It's not a thing,” he murmured, glancing back at Vil only to find he and the others were no longer gathered at his locker. He sighed heavily. Bringing up a hand to rub at the back of his back, he sighed again.
“Two sighs. I think that's a record,” Riddle teased, then more empathetically. “You like him a lot.”
It took Trey a couple seconds longer than he would have liked to realize that Riddle hadn't said it like a question.
“I do,” Trey said, his eyes glancing back to where Vil had been.
“So ask him out.” He punctuated this with a flourish of his hand. Trey stared at him.
“Riddle. You're also a realist. Well… actually, no. You're not. But generally you're pretty realistic when it comes to stuff like this. Vil is famous and wouldn't be interested in having me as a boyfriend.”
Riddle sent a flat, judgemental look his way.
“You're not fooling anybody anymore, Trey. Every since I've come here and probably your first year as well, you act again and again like you're … middle of the road. Neutral. Adequate.”
Trey quirked a brow, allowing a self-deprecating smile to cross his face.
“That's exactly what I am though.”
Riddle narrowed his eyes. Then, Trey thought he saw understanding in that ruby gaze. Trey hoped Riddle would share what it was he had seen, but instead, Riddle returned to the task of changing out books.
That done, he turned back to Trey.
“Well, we have to get to class now, but I have a task for you. I want you to ask Vil Schoenheit out by the end of this week or…”
He allowed a conspiratorial smirk. Trey didn't need him to finish the sentence to know the punishment that awaited him if he did not do as Riddle said. Still, it was a little unfair.
He said as much.
“No. What's unfair is a highly capable mage and student and Vice Housewarden as well as my best friend not giving himself nearly enough credit. I have myself to blame, in some capacity, of course. I took your strong work ethic and effortless way with people for granted and didn't give you the praise you deserved.”
Trey felt heat rush up the back of his neck and he waved the concern away.
“I never felt unappreciated by you in any way. But I'll do better with the ‘giving myself credit’ thing. No promises, but I will try.”
Riddle nodded. “Good. Though, it changes nothing where my ultimatum is concerned.”
“Well, I had to try. I'll see you after classes, Riddle.”
Riddle nodded. “See you after classes, Trey. And maybe consider less high maintenance crushes in the future.”
“But why would I do that? I've gotten such good practice in dealing with them from you.”
Riddle gaped, but a second later, he laughed goodnaturedly.
“I deserved that, I suppose. Until later then.”
Trey watched Riddle walk off, a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.
After some quick calculation, he sighed.
It was Wednesday. ‘By the end of this week’ meant Sunday.
Riddle had ordered him to ask Vil Schoenheit out within four days or he'd seal his magic away. And there was never any indication of how long it would stay sealed either.
Basically, no matter which way you sliced it, the situation was hopeless.
With a sigh, Trey stuck his hands in his pockets and headed for his own class.

Chapter Text
If Trey had thought that Riddle’s comments and ultimatum regarding Vil would end at that, he’d have had a serious lapse in judgment.
The next morning, on his way to take care of a few Vice Housewarden duties, Riddle stopped him from his seat in the lounge. He took a sip of his tea before speaking once more.
“I will be taking over some of your tasks today, Trey.”
Trey raised a brow in a silent question.
“It’s simple, really. Next year you will no longer be here and I will be training a new Vice Housewarden. So, it only makes sense that I become as knowledgeable of your tasks as well as my own. For the time being, we will trade a few tasks. I need to keep some of my original taks or I might overwhelm myself with the change. So, here is a list of my tasks that I wish for you to handle today along with the list of your tasks I will be taking over. Next week, it’ll be a new set that trades out the rest.”
Trey took the list and looked over it in silence. It was interesting because he could tell from first glance that these tasks were out of order. It took a second glance to realize that his Housewarden had listed them in a way that would best coordinate with his class and activities. Leave it to Riddle to cover every last detail.
Convinced of Riddle’s reasoning, Trey nodded in agreement.
“That’s fair and very sensible. Not that I’m surprised.” He checked over the list once more, noting the first two tasks that he could take care of before the first class that morning. He could even hit up the cafeteria for breakfast first. Nodding his departure to the Heartslabyul Housewarden, Trey took his leave.
He reached the cafeteria in no time. There weren’t a lot of students out of bed this early in the morning, but he noted a few students dotting the tables. His heart skipped a beat when one such student caught his gaze.
Sitting at a table furthest from the doors, sat his crush. Vil was reading a book, taking periodic pauses for a bite of food or a sip of tea. Trey stood, spellbound as he watched the other third year turn a page, his firm mouth set in focus. Something seemed to catch his attention, however, as in the next second, Vil’s head lifted and his amethyst gaze met Trey’s.
Trey felt the heat rise up his neck and set his jaw against the urge to look away. That would be more obvious than Trey cared to be in this situation. He tried for casual as well as he could, even throwing in a companionable wave for effect. The result was hypnotic.
Vil smiled. The smile was radiant, as it always was. The smile was delicate, elegant, and refined. Beautiful. As it always was. But there also was the warmth and delight that was rare where Vil was concerned.
Even Rook and Epel did not seem to get that smile as often as Trey.
Jack did.
Immediately chastising himself for such a ridiculous thought, Trey nodded at the line in explanation before he quickly made his way to the front. Lining up, he impulsively glanced at Vil again.
The blond teen had returned to his reading. Trey was pleased to find he could see Vil’s face more clearly from here. The sun shining in through the window in wide rays seemed to highlight Vil’s form like a spotlight. It rested upon the other’s head, causing the golden tresses to glow attractively. Trey’s eyes fell to Vil’s face which also glowed effortlessly. That, however, had less to do with the sun’s light and more to do with Vil’s presence.
Before he could stop himself, Trey’s gaze fell to that mouth, firm again in focus as the Pomfiore Housewarden continued to study from whatever book he was reading. Trey licked his lips. It was not the first time he thought about what it would be like to kiss the other. He had noted how soft they looked the day he’d given Vil the cake. The way his lips had closed gracefully around the fork and the way his tongue had slipped elegantly along the line of his mouth to clear away any traces of crumbs had caught Trey’s eyes in an instant and it was at that very moment he realized he was attracted to the other boy.
It had been the beginning of the end for Trey.
Allowing himself a moment of self-pity, he was suddenly reminded of Riddle. His Housewarden didn’t do well with self-pity. Pot and kettle in Trey’s opinion, but it would be a headache to try to call Riddle out on it. Unfortunately, thinking about Riddle reminded him of the order he’d issued and his stomach suddenly sunk.
“The line’s moving, Sea Turtle.”
That sinking feeling only doubled when he glanced behind him, gaze meeting the equal parts annoyed and amused eyes of Jade and Floyd.
Well, at least Azul isn’t with them.
As if the very thought of his name had summoned him, Azul almost glided to join his friends in the line to the annoyance of those behind them. He paid them no mind and instead regarded Trey.
“Do you plan to move forward any time soon, Trey?” He asked, a glint almost seeming to spark off his glasses. “I do believe there are quite a lot of us that are hungry and would like to eat before class begins.”
Trey turned around and closed the distance in the line he’d left during his reverie and was ashamed to see how long of a gap it was. Ignoring his embarrassment, he glanced at Vil again. It seemed the other teen hadn’t noticed his embarrassing moment, for which he was grateful.
“I have noticed,” a silky voice commented behind him. “That our Trey here seems to have an acute interest in a certain Housewarden.“
Trey immediately spun around to see identical smirks on Azul and Jade’s faces and a disinterested, but suddenly amused grin on Floyd’s.
“Oh, a little crush, Sea Turtle. Who is it?” Then his face grew dark. “It’s not the little goldfish, right?”
Sensing a threat, and vastly shocked at the insinuation that he was interested in Riddle, Trey raised both of his hands.
“I would never see Riddle like that, Floyd. Please calm down.” He sighed as the other relaxed. A little. Sensing he needed a little more convincing, and shocked at the realization as to why he needed to be convinced, Trey continued. “He’s my best friend and he’s a terror to behold. It’s hard enough with what I already deal with. I imagine it would take an equally… ah, intense sort of personality to be able to contend with Riddle enough to date him.”
Floyd seemed pleased with the answer. He fell back into his carefree attitude and slugged an arm around Trey. He felt it might have been a bit of a threat, but at least he wasn’t squeezing him like he always threatened.
“Well, good,” he said, and then punched him none too lightly in his side in what he obviously thought was a playful manner. Making a note to ask Jade to instruct him on what would be considered playful for humans and hoping the conversation was finished, Trey tried to step out of Floyd’s hold. Floyd held him steady, guiding him forward in the line to close the space as it moved forward. Turning them around to face the other two Octivinelle students, Floyd repeated his question from before the misunderstanding.
“Who is it, Sea Turtle? Come on, teeeeellll uuussss! Or do I need to squeeze it out of you?”
Alarmed at the threat, Trey made his face impassive. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Jade smirked in a manner that was both teasing and sympathetic. There was something else there as well, but it was so guarded, Trey couldn’t put his finger on it. Azul, however, was grinning outright.
“Oh, I think you know very well what we’re implying. Did you think someone wouldn’t notice you were staring at a certain Pomfiore Housewarden?”
Trey was grateful Azul was only speaking loud enough for the four of them to hear. He was not grateful, however, nor was he interested in having this conversation. Especially with these three.
Unfortunately, knowing them, he wasn’t sure he could get out of it. There was also the real threat of Azul trying to use this to his benefit.
“You can assume what you like, but it really doesn’t matter in the end, does it?”
This seemed to surprise two out of the three. Floyd didn’t seem to understand, but that didn’t seem to bother him either. Azul and Jade traded looks before they looked at the Heartslabyul Vice Housewarden with something akin to pity.
“It doesn’t matter?” Jade asked plaintively. There seemed to be a hint of annoyance as well. Trey was confused, but thought it better not to ask. “A person’s feelings always matter. But please, enlighten us as to why your feelings don’t matter in this case.”
Trey felt like he was being challenged rather than asked to explain something, but he did it anyway. Better to guide them into a discussion. Azul would be less likely to realize the opportunity for what it was. Trey really didn’t care to think about all the ways Azul could use this to his advantage.
Trey turned to look at Vil for a moment before turning back to the Octivinelle students with a heavy, defeated sigh.
“Look at him. Vil Schoenheit is a great mage. He’s extremely talented in everything he does. He holds a spot in the top of the class in every subject. Then there’s the fact that he is a celebrity and popular influencer. Someone like that would have to take care when it came to relationships at all. Many people in his position don’t date because their fans would be jealous. Even when they do date, they have to consider who would best compliment them and their image. If you consider all that, which I have at length, I’m the last person he should be with.” He sighed longingly as he looked at Vil over his shoulder.
“Stop it.”
Trey blinked up at the one who had snapped. Jade’s eyes were like fire as they met Trey’s confused expression.
“First, you are being very presumptive of Vil’s feelings. You are friends now and you’ve been spending time with him more often. Who’s to say he doesn’t share your feelings?” Trey would have snorted at that, but there was something in Jade’s unflinching gaze that told him it was better if he didn’t. “Second, you are being very unfair to Vil. Yes, he would be very selective about who he would date for those very reasons, but to say that he would completely disregard his own feelings in favor of what looks good for the cameras is projecting. You don’t speak for him.”
Trey’s mouth dropped open slightly, but he quickly closed it, letting the words sink in. Jade was right. He was projecting. It still didn’t change his opinions on the matter.
“You’re right.”
But Vil would never be interested in someone like me.
He didn’t say that part aloud and if he realized that the thought was as much a projection as the rest, that was his problem.
Jade’s expression softened and a nearly inaudible sigh fell from his lips. “Why don’t you just tell him rather than continue to torture yourself?”
Trey didn’t miss the side-long look Azul threw his way. Jade didn’t falter, but Trey found himself considering the exchange. Or lack thereof.
Was it possible that Jade had a crush on someone he hadn’t confronted as well?
I’ve got enough problems, he decided. I don’t need to get involved in other people’s drama. Still, I’m curious. What a fascinating person they must be for Jade to find interest in them.
“Don’t worry. Riddle told me that if I don’t ask him out by the end of this week…”
Azul and Jade both smiled apologetically. Floyd beamed.
“That’s my lil’ goldfish,” he said, proudly.
It was at that moment it hit him.
“Floyd… Do you like Riddle? Like, romantically?”
Floyd rolled his eyes. “Duh? Isn’t that obvious?”
Trey snorted. “Not to Riddle. He thinks you mess with him to make his life hell.”
Floyd frowned at that. Suddenly, he was gone.
Jade and Azul looked at each other in alarm and then companionable resignment.
“Well, that’s one way to handle it, I suppose.”
“We both knew Riddle didn’t see it that way, but it was so amusing to watch. I never even considered…”
The two of them in deep discussion suddenly, Trey took the opportunity to move forward in the line, trying not to bring attention to himself once more.
It wasn’t until he had his food and was considering where to sit when Jade approached him, bearing his own tray.
There was that curious look in his eyes, just past the unwavering firmness in his gaze. He seemed to hesitate a moment before finally speaking.
“Tell him, Trey. For me.”
No further explanation was given as Jade turned on his heels and joined Azul at one of the middle tables. Immediately the two were speaking, somewhat frantically. Trey shook his head.
Why did this year hold far more questions than answers?
With a long-suffering sigh, Trey considered the tables once more. His attention was flagged by movement, his gaze seeking it out. His eyes fell on Vil’s table, then Vil himself, who was waving him over.
“Good morning, Trey. Why don’t you join me? I would enjoy the opportunity to catch up.”
Trey, ignoring the heat rising up the back of his neck, joined him with a nervous smile.

Chapter Text
Breakfast with Vil had been a nice change of pace for Trey. Whereas breakfasts shared with Riddle were generally all business, breakfast with Vil felt more like two friends catching up on one another’s lives.
Which he supposed was true enough. After all, he did consider the other third year a friend. A rather good friend, in Trey’s opinion.
“I hope Riddle isn't running you ragged,” the blond teen said, the expression on his face forelorn. Trey laughed and waved the concern away. “It's really not that bad, Vil, but the sentiment is appreciated.”
Vil sighed and shrugged. Trey was not surprised to see that he could manage to make even a shrug look elegant.
“If you say so. But remember what I told you. You're always welcome at Pomfiore. I won't even force you to undertake the challenges. Not that I don't think you can take them, but rather… you shouldn't need to suffer such a tedious task just to talk with me.”
Trey smiled wryly. “Thanks, but part of me thinks you're giving me far too much credit.”
Vil frowned. “No, Trey. It's you who does not give yourself enough credit. You would much prefer to hide behind your self-proclaimed mediocrity so that not much is expected of you. If you don't bring attention to yourself, you have less opportunity to fail and even when you do fail, it's fine because no one is really focusing to you.”
Trey felt the heat rise up the back of his neck. He blinked at the other for long moments before finally clearing his throat.
“I don't have any need for ambition. I learn and I enjoy school because I like it, not necessarily because I have some secret goal I need to complete.” He laughed and shook his head. “Even if there was something I wanted to do, my parents have already told me they are passing the shop to me a few years after I graduate.”
He couldn't tell if the blond believed him, but it didn't matter. It was the truth regardless of what Vil wanted to believe.
“I suppose that's it then. No need for accolades and laurels to get ahead so you just skirt by on the promise you have a career already intact. It's sensible, to be certain, as I have no doubt your parents do intend to have you inherit the shop, and I have even less doubt that you would do well by such work. What I do doubt, is if you ever asked yourself if that's what you truly want.”
Trey held his gaze, but said nothing. Vil was right, of course. Having been told since youth that he would one day take over the family business, Trey never saw any need to look into a career he might find interesting or worthwhile. What was the point in that, however, when he already had a sure thing.
A hand suddenly covered one of the ones he'd rested on the table and tugged Trey rather unceremoniously back to the present. His eyes fell to it before raising to hold the other's gaze, trying desperately not to blush at the touch.
“What I do doubt, Trey, is if you could ever really be happy in a job without doing the due research and considering every option before finally making a choice.”
Trey opened his mouth to protest, but found he had nothing to rebuke the Housewarden’s claim. Closing his mouth, he merely shrugged, smiling ruefully.
“Well, it's a little too late at this point.”
His eyes were on their hands, Vil's still covering his own. For a brief few moments, he considered turning his palm so that he could truly hold the soft, delicate hand. In the end, as always, he did nothing.
In this case, however, he knew it was the right choice. If he did it, it could ruin the friendship, and where would be the benefit of that? In the end, Vil shook his head with a disappointed sigh and Trey immediately felt bad.
Wondering what it was he had messed up in this particular interaction, he watched as Vil pulled his hand back and stood, picking up his tray.
“I must get going. I've a few things I need to take care of before the first lesson. See you later, Trey.”
Then that warm smile and Trey knew he hadn't messed up too bad, that Vil still considered him a friend.
“See you later, Vil. Have a great day.”
Vil beamed at that, a little ruefully. “I'll try.”
Trey watched the other leave and, with a glance at his own tray, realized he hadn't even touched his food. Eating quickly, Trey cleaned up and headed off to take care of his tasks.
—
If Trey had thought it would be awhile until he saw Vil again, other than the classes they shared, he had been woefully incorrect. He had seen Vil far more in that first day of new tasks than he had in the whole year.
It quickly occurred to him at that point, that this was all by Riddle's design.
The final point was the Housewarden meeting. Vil looked surprised, but a second later, an amused smile slipped over his features. Apparently, something about seeing Trey so often amused the blond third-year. Not as much as it amused Trey, however, because at least Vil wouldn't understand the true reason for his constant appearances.
Vil waved at him as he took his seat and Trey nodded his greeting. He was currently dealing with getting his feelings at the whole situation under control.
He was amused. Highly amused. But he was also starting to feel a little annoyed. It was almost as if Riddle didn't trust him to actually say anything if he wasn't given enough opportunities to do so.
The meeting went off without a hitch. He made sure to take care of various note taking, both of the meeting itself and those in response to the questions and topics Riddle had written down for him to pass along. His hand felt cramped from the thorough writing.
—
Once the meeting adjourned, Trey gathered his things before immediately making his way over to Vil. It surprised him suddenly, to realize that no matter what the occasion, if Vil was present, Trey would make his way over to him. It also surprised him to see that Vil had been about to do the same.
At least, it had seemed like it. Then again, it was more likely to chalk it all up to wishful thinking and save himself the heartache.
Suddenly feeling very aware of himself in a way he was not at all fond of, Trey realized that he and Vil were alone.
This…this he wasn't used to. In fact, aside from the few visits to Heartslabyul from Vil—that were always accompanied by trading gossip and the sharing of tea and sweets—it wasn't often they were alone for any real amount of time together. And very nearly there was always someone else within earshot at the very least. And Heartslabyul was also his house. It stood to reason that he would have a little more confidence in his own house.
This classroom where the Housewarden meeting was held was neutral territory.
Vil cleared his throat diplomatically.
Trey had the grace to grin and bow his head apologetically.
“Sorry. I've got a lot on my mind.”
Vil smiled empathetically.
“With Riddle as the Headwarden you serve, I can imagine.”
Trey laughed at that and shook his head. “Normally, that would be the case but not this time.”
“Is that so?”
Trey could see the curiousness in those unfairly beautiful eyes. He swallowed hard.
In his mind, Riddle stomped his healed feet and scowled.
He sighed heavily, inwardly.
“Trey.” The voice was gentle, concern evident in every syllable. Trey blinked. Vil was suddenly so much closer and was gripping him by the upper arms. “Are you alright?”
Trey grinned, far too taken with the blond’s earnest concern to realize he should probably be blushing from head to foot.
“I'm fine. Just…” he sighed, heat rushing up the back of his neck. “Look… I was wondering…”
Was he really going to do this?
He had told Riddle he would. He had said it would be no big deal. After all… he already knew what the answer would be. There was only answer it could be.
And yet… part of him wanted to be wrong. Never before had he wanted to be more wrong than he wanted to be right then. He needed to be wrong.
But he could only find out which it was if he played all of his cards, and truthfully, he was far too much a coward.
“Trey?”
Trey sighed and smiled his apology once again.
Vil seemed equal parts sympathetic, eager, and annoyed. It was, of course, the annoyance Trey noticed most.
Maybe now was not the time.
“You were wondering…?” Vil prompted, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Trey sighed. The sound was defeated even to his ears. The sound of a beast realizing there was no where left to run.
“I was wondering if you'd go out with me sometime.”
A beat. Silence. Another beat.
Trey wanted to look up. He was intensely curious to see the others' reaction. Unfortunately, it was very likely the expression was pity or disgust. Not really expressions he rushed to see on his crush’s pretty face when they were directed at him.
“No. I won't go out with you.”
Trey nodded.
Of course. He wasn't surprised at the answer.
He was, however, surprised at the pain he felt deep in his gut. The sharp tightness of his heart. The sudden sluggishness of his lungs.
Apparently, against all his common sense, a part of him had allowed him to hope.
Pressure rather than force guided his chin up. He blinked before what had happened registered in his mind. Vil, having closed the distance between them, had used his thumb and forefinger to tilt his head up and back gently so he could meet the blond’s empathetic but firm gaze.
“Stop coming to conclusions before you consider all the evidence,” he said, his voice low, melodic, and commanding all at the same time. “I will not go out with you. Ask me again when you're truly ready to ask.”
This time, when he really listened, he could hear the way Vil’s words seemed to say more than what was actually said. If he considered all the evidence, it seemed that Vil was hinting that—should Trey ask Vil on Trey’s terms—his answer might be vastly different next time.
Trey nodded, because really, what could he say to that. Vil smiled his warm smile before taking off.
Did this mean what it seemed like it meant? Or was he being far too hopeful? Maybe Vil didn't mean it like he actually liked him, but rather just meant to help Trey learn some kind of lesson.
Trey the realist wanted to believe the latter, but Trey the romantic wanted to take the first thought and run with it.
That maybe… by some miracle… Vil liked him too.
Trey brought his fingers to the spot Vil had touched and smiled to himself even as he felt the heat rush up the back of his neck and into his cheeks.
Vil.
Vil liked him .
Why?
Deciding that, for once, it didn't matter, Trey grabbed his things and headed off to his next class which was thankfully Vil free.

Riddle, of course, knew of his failure. He placed his hands on his hips.
“The plan was all set in place so that you would spend more time with him and naturally progress to the perfect chance for a confession. Not for you to act foolishly and ask the first time you're in a room alone with him.”
He sighed.
“Well, hopefully now you see how utterly hopeless you've been. He's given you a second chance. Have you known many others who have had that many chances?”
Trey shook his head. Riddle nodded, obviously modified.
“Good. Now, I do think we'll keep up this trade of tasks because I wasn't lying earlier. I just didn't include you in the whole plan.”
He shrugged as if this absolved him of his sins.
“Especially since now you simply must impress him with your—”
“Riddle. Riddle. No offense, but listening to you is part of the reason I have to do this again. Besides, if he really likes me then I need to do this as me. No one else.”
Still, he was secretly grateful that Riddle decided not to change back to their original schedules.
This would be a whole lot more possible if he was able to actually spend time with the blond.
—
Trey left early, reaching the cafeteria long before most students. This early, maybe seven students in all. Most importantly, Vil was one of them.
Trey reached the line, which was himself and one other student. Trey allowed himself a moment of being impressed. It was quite possibly the fastest he'd ever gotten a meal at the school. The food also looked fresh and hot.
He grinned and shook his head. Still, even the premise of the most delicious school breakfast was not enough for him to commit to getting up this early if he didn't have to already.
If it were up to him, nothing would start before eleven in the morning. At the earliest.
Food obtained, Trey made his way to Vil's table and took a seat directly across from him. The blond seemed to have just finished reading something, considering it for a moment before grinning to himself with a self-satisfied nod. Then, with a snap of his elegant hand, he closed the book and set it on the table.
“Good morning, Trey.” Then there it was, that smile that he often turned to Trey these days. And now that he was really looking more closely now, he found something else that didn't seem to accompany the warm smiles that others got.
So this one… is just for me.
Well, if he hadn't been completely certain of Vil's intentions before he most certainly was now.
Against all odds and what, Trey thought, was a serious lapse in common sense, Vil wanted Trey to ask him out again. In fact, he was impatient for it.
Trey wanted to apologize for not being ready yet, but instead, he reached out and took one of Vil's hands that rested on the table. Lacing their fingers, he squeezed the hand with a warm smile of his own.
Soon, he tried to reassure the blond with his gaze alone. The lilac gaze he got in return conveyed curiosity, eagerness, and trust.
“Still doing Riddle’s tasks.”
It was a statement not a question, but Trey still treated it like one.
“Yeah. I'm no longer under threat of losing my magic, but I still have every intention of asking you out as soon as I'm ready.”
There was a sudden rush of tension between them. It occurred to Trey that neither of them had mentioned the implication that Vil had feelings for him and would likely say yes as long as Trey was top form when he asked next.
Vil, cheeks a little flushed, smiled. “Good,” he said, nodding a little breathlessly. He then straightened up and leaned in. He looked at their still intertwined hands as if pondering them. Then he turned their hands in a way that put his hands on top.
“I never really noticed before. You take impeccable care of your hands. Well, all your skin really. But especially your hands.”
Trey smiled and shrugged. “I don't know if it really makes that much sense, but as a baker you do a lot with your hands. Your hands also get banged up a lot. I take care of my hands with as much seriousness as I do my teeth, all because of what my parents do for a living. And because it's important I keep my hands in top shape for baking.”
Vil continued to look at their intertwined hands for long moments even after Trey finished talking. Finally, he looked up and the spell he'd been under was broken.
“I find it commendable that you take such good care of them. Most men do not pay them the attention they should. I really shouldn't be surprised though. You're very sensible and intelligent.”
Trey blushed at this. He fought the urge to excuse the compliment. He had promised he'd try to be better at accepting them, after all. He was nothing if not a man of his word.
“Thank you,” he said finally, his voice almost shaking from the effort to get the words out. Vil seemed to notice this, but said nothing. Instead, what he did do nearly stopped Trey’s heart and lungs at the same time.
An elegant thumb swiped firmly over the three knuckles it could reach, before going back down the path and repeating a few times.
It was now that he noticed just how far Vil had leaned in. Trey could smell Vil's breath, which thankfully didn't smell. Not that he'd ever worry about that with Vil. He bet the celebrity would die before ever foregoing personal hygiene. Honestly, while Trey didn't think he'd go as far as dying for it, he most certainly agreed with the sentiment.
As it was, the other’s breath smelled both sweet and minty with just the hint of cinnamon to suggest he’d been eating the cinnamon rolls. Which, incidentally, Trey had made.
Absent-mindedly, Trey licked his lips and for a few moments he was certain either he was about to kiss Vil, or Vil was about to kiss him.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” a deep silken voice sounded somewhere above them both.
Then just like that, the moment was broken.
They pulled away, though slowly, before both turned their attention on the sudden intrusion. A quick glance at Vil showed annoyance and immediately the reason was clear when Trey’s gaze fell on Leona Kingscholar who was flanked by Ruggie. “Am I interrupting something?”
Trey's eyes were caught by movement. Leona’s tail, twitching in amusement.
“Yes.”
Trey looked at Vil in surprise. He looked down at the hand still holding his own. The thumb returned to brushing gently at those three knuckles. Reassuring.
The smile widened as he looked up at the other third year, who was eyeing their hands with feigned disinterest. His tail was another matter. It flicked this way and that with annoyance. A quick glance at his ears proved the same.
For whatever reason, though Trey had a few guesses, Leona did not like the image they presented.
“Whatever. Vil. The Headmage wants you.”
Vil made a face. “What in the world for?”
Leona growled. “What do I look like? A messenger hornbill? Go ask him yourself.”
Ruggie looked resigned. It was obvious that whatever had the lion beastman’s tail in a knot was something he knew about at length. As it was, he was looking at Trey and mouthing something.
Sorry about this.
Then the teen shrugged and wheedled his Housewarden away.
“His lack of manners is always irritating.” Vil sighed, pulling his hand back to brush his hair behind his ear. “What were we talking about?”
Trey remembered exactly, but since they'd been talking about how wonderful he was, he chose not to bring it up again.
“Don't remember,” he fibbed with an apologetic smile.
The blond sighed and shook his head. “I'm sorry about that, Trey.”
Though the apology was at him, Vil's gaze was at the retreating form of the lazy prince. There was a heated glare in those lilac eyes. More intense than he expected over the matter of them being interrupted. Yet it didn't seem completely out of anger or annoyance. Trey wasn't sure, but he thought he saw some type of sorrow burning behind those eyes.
“Vil?”
The blond looked at him and he smiled apologetically at Trey.
“I suppose if you intend to date me you'll learn eventually… Leona and I dated at the start of the year.”
Trey's eyes widened. “Wait, seriously?”
Vil nodded. “Yeah. Your surprise is not unwarranted. We kept it quiet. It was a sort of trial, I suppose. You see, I was worried, and understandably so, that it wouldn't work out. It didn't and that's just the aftermath.”
Trey felt himself getting upset for the blond. “He shouldn't be acting like that.”
Vil nodded. “You're right but it's a waste of breath trying to make him see that. He's a spoiled brat who wants the toy he discarded now that he sees some other kid wants to play with it. And he's just going to have to finally learn how to live with disappointment.”
Trey watched the other, completely mesmerized. The other teen was a sight to behold, fierce determination on his face. Then something occurred to him.
While it seemed like the other was over Leona, there had been that sad look in his eyes. Maybe he wasn't completely over him. If that was the case, Trey didn't want to give the other more to deal with.
“Trey.”
Trey blinked, looking up to find the other's face as close as it had been before Leona had interrupted them.
“What Leona and I had… it's over. In fact, it had been over a little while before I ended it. I should have ended it sooner, but well… fame and perfect complexion notwithstanding, I am still human. I guess part of me really wanted it to work out…”
Trey smiled at that. “I mean, it makes perfect sense, you wanted it to work out. I can relate, you know…”
Vil looked up into his eyes and now Trey could see affection and happiness and hope.
Then the blond smiled and suddenly, in that time and space, they were alone. Trey, feeling a rush of confidence and a desire to surprise the other, lifted his hand to his mouth and kissed it gently.
Vil’s gaze widened and there was suddenly a very pretty flush to his cheeks.
“I want this to work out,” he said truthfully. “But part of me is afraid.”
Vil raised a brow. “What do you mean? What's there to be afraid of?”
Trey lowered their hands, but did not release Vil's.
“I just worry… with you being a famous celebrity and everything if… a lot of your fans aren't going to like it.”
Vil pulled his hands from Trey's and frowned. “You don't speak for my fan base, Trey. You're not wrong, there will be some who do not like it. However, most of them don't care as long as I'm happy. The biggest thing you've gotten wrong though… I won't choose anybody’s comfort or happiness ahead of mine. And I won't let you continue to bad mouth my potential future partner.”
It took Trey a few moments for the last statement to register. When it had, heat rushed up the back of his neck as Vil returned the kiss to the back of his hand with one of his own, smirking into the kiss to hide his amusement.
“I do hope I won't have to wait too much longer?”
Trey smiled despite his slight embarrassment.
“You won't,” he whispered. “I promise.”

Chapter Text
After their tender moments at breakfast, their dynamic had changed. Whereas before, Trey was drawn to Vil like bees to pastries, now he and Vil seemed to exist in the same orbit. They were more in sync, both accommodating the other without a thought or expectation of reward.
Trey also found himself missing Vil intensely when they parted ways. Which made sense, but not to the level he thought it should. After all, they literally lived at the same school. Most teenagers didn't have that luxury. It wouldn't even be a whole day until he saw the other again.
You need to calm down, Trey, he told himself. Yes, he's wonderful and it's overwhelming but you do still have to ask him out.
He grinned to himself and shook his head. He was being silly after all. Vil didn't want some fancy and snobby guy. He wanted Trey, for some reason. And whatever it was, Trey was happy for it.
—
Trey sought Rook out at Pomfiore after he'd left Vil at his locker with a burning red face. He was still shocked. He'd kissed the other's cheek.
In fact, it hadn't even occurred to him that he'd done something out of the ordinary until the bright, blinding smile accompanied by twin flushed cheeks reminded him that they weren't actually dating yet.
He'd almost forgotten; time with Vil felt so effortless.
“See, sweetheart? You're already doing a million times better than when you listened to Riddle.”
A press of a hand to his chest and Vil, ever the purveyor of social etiquette, returned the cheek kiss.
He brought a hand up to the spot, still feeling tingly and warm. Though, he knew that was more likely a trick of the mind. He'd hate to think of what someone's cheek actually tingling after a kiss might suggest. Nothing good, that was for certain.
“Ah! Bonjour, Chevalier des Roses~ ”
Trey jumped and focused back to his surroundings. He was met by the intensely sharp gaze of none other than Rook Hunt, Pomfiore Vice Housewarden. The bright smile that radiated from him was similar to Vil's social smile, but very different at the same time.
Whereas Vil's smile might bring to mind glam and fame, Rooks brought to mind imps and shadows.
If Vil is a bright sunny day, Rook is the radiation caused by the sun's rays.
Okay, that sounded harsher than he meant it. All he knew was that when that particular smile was on the Vice Housewarden’s face, there was far more going on than anyone could even hope to guess.
“I'd ask what brings you to notre belle maison but I believe even the less astute among our peers are beginning to notice.”
Oh.
Right.
It hadn't exactly occurred to him that were he to pursue Vil, Rook would be an unavoidable accessory to their relationship. He sighed inwardly.
Rook was Vil's closest and truest friend. He didn't mind taking in another friend. Besides, it wasn't like they didn't get along. It was just that… he really didn't like the idea of waking up in Vil's bed to find him watching from some corner or perched on the balcony outside the large glass windows. He honestly was not sure he'd put it past the odd teen. Especially if the point was to merely mess with another person.
It took him a couple more seconds to realize that he'd effectively put himself in bed with Vil in that scenario and bushed a deep red.
“ Non! Non! C'est beau~ The two rapidly beating hearts of two souls on the verge of becoming so much more! My own heart threatens to burst from its cage just merely watching the two of you.”
Trey laughed uncomfortably and decided this was probably by design. Rook was serving his Rook-ness at full flavor. Either readying him for the effect dating Vil would have on their relationship or it was a weird way of threatening Trey that if he hurt Vil, he would have Rook to contend with.
Not at all planning to hurt Vil, now or in the future, Trey leaned toward the former. He smiled and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Yeah. Actually. That's why I'm here. I plan to talk to the Headmage about allowing myself and Vil to spend Saturday at the port. I wanted to know… well, it's not like there would be a lot of fancy places to eat there but… you're his best friend and you've been there before. Where would he like to eat?”
Rook, about to speak, was cut off by the entrance of Jack and Epel. Epel looked surprised and then amused to find Trey there. Jack, on the other hand, was looking at Rook and very pointedly ignoring Trey.
For a moment, Trey thought he must have been correct. That there had been something between the two, only seemingly one-sided. But then he noticed the other awkwardly trying to figure out what to do with his arms and hands. Shifting from his signature stance of crossed arms, to trying to put them in his pockets and shifting his shoulders. As if he was trying to take up as little space as possible.
Then it hit him.
Whether he'd meant to or not, due to his feelings for Vil and his slight jealousy of Jack, any time they had interacted, Trey had been cold or disinterested at best. Perhaps a little antagonistic as well.
Well, as antagonistic as Trey got, anyway.
He sighed.
I'll deal with that in a moment.
He nodded to Jack all the same and smiled to see the other seemed to relax after that.
Good.
Turning his attention to Epel, while still regarding the other two, Trey repeated his question.
“What would Vil like to eat at the pier?”
“Barbeque! Definitely!”
Trey blinked.
“Barbeque? Vil… likes barbeque?”
Not what he would have expected, but he supposed the pier would have limited choices. Which meant Vil would have limited choices. Barbecued food was very delicious for all that it was messy. Still, Trey would have expected lobster or fish over barbeque.
“Ah, Monsieur Pommette, perhaps…”
Trey looked at Rook, curious as to why he'd cut himself off. The blond then shook his head with a laugh and beamed at Trey.
“Forgive me. I've forgotten what I was going to suggest. I'm just so moved by all this beauty.”
Epel’s face was neutral. No, it was more blank than neutral. Trey felt that something was very clearly not being said here. Jack even seemed to be waiting for something. His tail shifted listlessly. He glanced at Trey now and whatever he was trying to convey silently was lost on him. Which made sense. They didn't know each other very well, all things considered.
But Jack was important to Vil. So that would change. Starting now.
“Barbeque. Okay. That should be easy enough. Thank you so much for your help. I have to go now but… Jack, could I have a word with you outside real quick?”
The wolf beastman nodded, face impassive.
They left the others and Trey sighed in relief once the warm sun outside fell on his body. He always forgot how stuffy the Pomfiore dorm seemed until he left again.
He turned and regarded Jack for a few moments, before finally holding his arms out in offer of a treaty.
“I'm sorry. I let my feelings get the better of me and I treated you rudely as a result. That was very unfair of me and you didn't deserve it. Even if you liked Vil or Vil liked you, you still would not have deserved it. I know we don't know each other very well but I do plan to ask Vil out. If he says yes—”
“When.”
Trey blinked. Jack had a small smile on his face, arms now crossed over his chest in what made a relaxed picture.
The meaning behind the interruption hit Trey hard and he couldn't help but laugh lightly.
With so many people confident that Vil would say yes, how could he have ever doubted where Vil's affections laid?
“When,” he corrected amiably before continuing, “Vil says yes, we'll likely see more of one another.”
Jack nodded but said nothing.
Trey moved to stand in front of Jack and offered his hand with a companionable smile.
“I’d like us to be friends, when that happens.”
Jack grinned. It was kind but almost aggressive in its eagerness. He took the offered hand and shook it, Trey trying his best not to cringe at the way his bones seemed to crack.
“I'd like that too. And yeah, I forgive you. I don't know what you're feeling, but I get territory disputes, so I sort of understood what got your fur all ruffled. No hard feelings.”
Trey smiled appreciatively. He then nodded his departure. Jack hesitated but then nodded his own goodbyes, presumably joining Epel once more in Pomfiore’s large, looming walls.
Deciding that since he was going to be spending a lot more time here, he decided he'd try to look at the place in pros rather than cons. With that, he took off back through the mirror and headed for the Headmage’s office.

Chapter Text
If Trey had thought that a rumor of romantic interest forming between two Night Raven students wouldn't catch the attention of the academy’s Headmage, he would have been completely wrong.
As it was, the moment he reached Crowley’s office, the man ushered him in and smiled his most Crowley smile.
“Clover! Welcome! I'm a very busy man, as you well know, but I've always got time for my students. Aren't I just the kindest and most generous of Headmages?”
Trey didn't even have time to say anything before the mage continued. “Yes, yes. I thought so too. Now, what can I help you with?”
The Heartslabyul Vice Housewarden wasn't sure how to ask, but decided to just tell the truth. That seemed the best in this case.
“Well, I was hoping I could get permission for myself and Vil Schoenheit to use the mirror on Saturday.”
“Oh! Of course! I had heard a little rumor that the two of you might have a little thing going on.”
Trey groaned inwardly. Was there anyone who didn't know at this point? Probably not, he decided. Night Raven College was a mage academy, but it was a boarding school for teenage boys first and foremost. Talk was bound to run rampant in the environment a boarding school created.
“Yeah. I was actually hoping to take him to the pier.”
Crowley nodded, as if it were a brilliant idea and one he had come up with himself.
“I do keep telling people they really should visit the little port town. The people there have always had a good relationship with this school. I wouldn't be surprised if many people have gone simply because I, Dire Crowley, urged them to visit.”
“Um… yeah. I'm sure they did.”
Better to allow the man his need to toot his own horn if the man was going to agree to let them go.
“Precisely. And since I'm a man who believes that free time is as important as the work we do, I shall allow your leave for Saturday. Just be sure to be back by the evening meal.”
Trey smiled his thanks and gave a nod.
“Thank you, sir. I appreciate it.”
The man sighed happily and nodded.
“You are most welcome. I am indeed the very picture of benevolence. Also, if you happen to see the prefect of Ramshackle Dorm, please let them know I have need of himself and Grim.”
Curiosity peaked the other's interest. If the Headmage was looking for Yuu, then there must be something more behind it. It was rare that Yuu was called for something unless there was going to be some sort of event tied to it. A trip? An event? It was anybody's guess.
Then another thought crept into his mind. What if Crowley had finally found a way for Yuu to return home?
He instantly felt a twinge of both sadness and guilt. Sadness because the thought of Night Raven College without his new friend would be a sad one; guilt because he knew how much Yuu wanted to get home. Still, he had other things to worry about so he decided he'd ask Yuu what the Headmage wanted when he saw him next.
“I will. Have a great day, Headmage.”
“You too, Clover.”
Heading out, Trey couldn't help but feel excited at the prospect of inviting Vil on a date.
—
Trey was planning on asking Vil after Potions. Vil usually had the class with him, but it appeared for some reason or another, he'd been absent from the class.
Rook had been there, however, and let him know that Vil was alright.
“My deepest apologies, Chevalier des Roses , but Vil has taken a little ill. Nothing to worry about, it is merely the spring air.” Trey was relieved to hear that the blond was alright.
Well, sick, but alright.
“Would it be okay if I came and saw him?”
A teasing grin slipped over the other's mouth, green eyes sparkling with amusement.
“You really are quite taken with Roi de Poison , aren't you?”
Trey allowed a small grin back and shrugged.
“I think it's pretty obvious to everyone at this point.”
“ Trés vrai! But of course! Still, do I sense—even yet—that you worry about Vil's affections for you?”
Trey said nothing. He knew Vil liked him after all. He just wasn't sure how serious Vil was about him compared to himself in regards to Vil.
Rook leaned forward from his seat behind Trey and spoke for only him to hear.
“Take it from me when I say this, Trey. Vil is absolutely, positively smitten with you.” The self proclaimed hunter of beauty grinned impishly. "Afterall, you are the cause of his current affliction."
Trey blushed, even as his brows furrowed. "I thought you said he was sick?"
"Oui." Rook hummed out, "Lovesick."
Trey's face burned brighter as he ducked his head. He couldn't stop from beaming though. He did trust Rook. The Pomfiore Vice Housewarden would know best, after all.
“Thanks,” he murmured back to Rook before they both turned their attention back to Crewel who was regarding them with a look that said ‘silence before I punish you puppies’.
Trey would rather not get any punishment Crewel might think up.
—
Trey didn't have to visit Pomfiore as Vil was in the next class they shared. Trey had reached the lawns for P.E. and his eyes fell on the shimmering blond locks that tapered into lavender that matched the actor’s eyes perfectly.
His science mind wondered how long it took Vil, or Vil’s stylist, to figure out just the right mixture to match his eyes perfectly. Or, as close to perfect as hair dye could manage.
The blond noticed him and when their eyes met, Trey could see that the warmth that Vil had usually spared for him had only doubled.
Maybe Vil was right. He was a lot better at this than he'd ever thought possible. All by just being himself.
Unfortunately, he was suddenly all nervous energy as he realized he'd need to actually ask Vil to go with him. Making his way over, Vil leaned in to talk low enough so only he'd hear.
“I hope you don't mind but I've already informed Vargas that you'll be my partner for this class.”
Trey blushed lightly, but shook his head. “How could I possibly mind?” Vil's eyes widened ever so slightly and for a moment Trey got the feeling that they were about to kiss.
Unfortunately, they were once again—rather rudely and unfairly, in Trey's opinion—interrupted. This time by the shrill, sharp sound of Vargas’s whistle. They both blushed, but both managed not to jump. He was also pleased to note that neither of them moved an inch from the other.
“LISTEN UP, ALL OF YOU.” As if the students weren't already looking at him thanks to the whistle. The P.E. the teacher was looking at them all, as if hyping them up for what he was going to say next. Then, thankfully at a far more appropriate volume, he continued. “I think today we'll do some partner dueling. I'll pair you up, pair off the pairs, and we'll practice dueling with a partner.”
Trey felt worried for a long moment that Vargas was able to separate them. A quick look at Vil told him he had nothing to worry about and so he tried to relax.
As he continued to look at the other, it suddenly hit him that Vil seemed a lot shorter.
Oh, right! It's the heels.
He was still quite a bit taller, but at this less generous gap between them, it would make things like kissing his cheek or simply kissing him a lot easier.
Probably not something you should be thinking about right now, he scolded himself and returned his attention to Vargas. The man had apparently paired off two people and was working on a third. Once they'd been paired, Vargas turned to look at Trey and Vil.
He seemed to consider them for a moment before shrugging.
“Clover! You're with Schoenheit!”
Trey blinked. He'd wanted to believe it was possible, but it was very different to see it happen before his eyes.
“How'd you talk him into that?”
Vil shrugged. “Coach Vargas has been wanting to start a fitness series online, but isn't very technical minded when it comes to the Internet and running a channel. I simply explained that should he be able to put together a product that I would be proud to put my name on, I would produce the series for him.”
Trey's brows rose and he shook his head. Honestly, until Vil mentioned it, Trey often forgot that Vil was technically rich as well as self-employed as a brand name. It didn't bother him, per say. Rather, it was just a constant jolt when a reminder of that part of Vil's life appeared.
“Why? Why offer that just to make sure you're partnered with me? That has to be a lot of money…I just don't think I'm—”
There was an intense fire in those light lilac eyes. Trey immediately swallowed everything else he was about to say, but held Vil's gaze.
“As I was saying. After he agreed to my conditions, he asked why and I explained that if I wished to share as much of my school experience with my b-friend, then that was my business and mine alone.”
Trey blushed and found himself at a loss for words. Also, he wasn't certain, but it seemed as if Vil had been about to say something else before he said friend.
Did Vil know more about his plans than he had led on? Unlikely, since he'd not seen Vil until after he'd decided on the plans in question. Unless Rook or Epel or Jack had hinted at something.
But even they didn't know his whole plan. Only Trey alone knew that he planned to ask Vil out officially by the end of their date on Saturday.
Deciding he would drive himself crazy with all this worrying, Trey smiled at the other, fondness evident in his gaze and voice as he spoke.
“And what did he say to that?”
Vil flashed a radiant, self-satisfied smile.
“What else could he say but yes? You know how moved he gets about everything. So much passion in so… short a man. The point is, he agreed. He did have the one condition that he be able to look us over to consider if we'll be a good fit for the exercise he had planned. I allowed it, because I am already certain we'll do well together. It seems he agrees.”
Trey could only stare at the other for long moments, heart beating heavily in his chest.
If I'm not careful, I might fall in love with this boy.
Trey decided he was tired of being careful. Careful didn't give him the things he wanted.
“I wanted to ask but I haven't really had a chance—”
“Yes, I'll be happy to accompany you on a date to the pier. Just be sure to get plenty of sleep tonight, because I would like to leave early.” Trey laughed, not at all surprised that Vil had heard somewhere through the grapevine about his plans to ask him out on a date. Then the blond continued. “I'd like to spend as much time there as we can before the larger crowds arrive.”
Trey was confused at first, but then realization hit him. Right. Ever since the school had the event for the little town, business had been booming. There were often larger crowds in the evenings, but the largest crowds were always on Saturday and Sunday. Larger crowds meant far more opportunities for Vil to be spotted and their date interrupted.
On a whim, Trey took Vil's hand and laced their fingers together. He squeezed it and resisted the urge to kiss the back of it. They were still at P.E. and holding hands while standing pretty close was one thing. Kissing his hand now in front of all these people just wasn't his style. Still, he was a little surprised at how natural the tactile sort of stuff was coming to him. He'd always imagined he'd be way too shy or awkward.
They both turned their attention back to Vargas who had finished pairing everyone up. Instructions and expectations were given next. Then finally, the first two pairs were brought up while everyone else watched and Vargas brought attention to both things done correctly and things done incorrectly.
Vil and Trey had done well as partners. Trey had originally ceded to Vil's leadership, but Vil easily created opportunities for Trey to shine as well.
By the end of the class, Trey and Vil along with Malleus and Lilia were the only two pairings that Vargas didn't have any suggestions or advice to offer. Trey was surprised to find that when paired with Vil, he didn't mind the spotlight so much every so often. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that somehow, he just knew that Vil, for whatever reason, believed in and wanted to rely on him and have Trey rely on him in turn.
Vargas came to stand before the two of them. He had a wry sort of smile on his face.
“I've got to hand it to ya, Schoenheit. I had my doubts, but you were right. Besides Draconia and Vanrouge, I haven't witnessed many other dueling pairs that co-duel with as much awareness of one's partner to be able to predict what they'll do next. MAGNIFICENT! If you weren't already in your third year I'd want to train you to peak partner condition!”
Vil looked pleased with the compliments. Trey on the other hand, shuddered at the thought of more private lessons with Vargas. The extra flying lessons were bad enough. Still, if he was being honest with himself, they were both pretty cool and fun. So not too bad. That didn't mean he wanted more training from the P.E. teacher though.
“Thanks,” he said. Vargas went off to speak to some of the other lingering pairs who sought feedback on their duels.
Trey watched him for a moment, though it was more like looking through him. Past him, as he thought about what the man had said.
Vil, seemingly guessing where his thoughts were, squeezed his hand. Trey was instantly brought back to the present, his eyes seeking and holding Vil's gaze.
“Let's head to the locker room. While we walk you can tell me which restaurant you booked a reservation for tomorrow.”

Chapter Text
“I'm sorry. Epel Felmier told you that I would definitely enjoy what? ”
Trey quirked a brow at the reaction. He had just finished explaining that he hadn't placed a reservation anywhere because when he'd asked Epel, Rook, and Jack where Vil would like to eat, Epel had proclaimed with all certainty that the Pomfiore Housewarden would enjoy barbeque.
Vil was silent for a few moments before he finally let out a long-suffering sigh.
“Obviously, my little poison apple still has a few lessons left to learn,” the blond said with a little smirk before shaking his head. “I'm afraid Epel was not being honest with you. Barbeque is… not very high on my list of foods I enjoy.”
Trey sighed, replaying the scene in his head and finally the pieces began to fall into place. That was what Rook had started to say but decided against.
“I see,” the other third year said, his tone a razor’s edge, after Trey recounted the conversation. “So my loyal Vice Housewarden has finally betrayed me. And my childhood friend as well.”
Trey could tell that Vil was not truly mad. Perhaps a little frustrated, but not mad. He just had a need to play out a plot of revenge in his head to allow himself to move on.
As far as Trey had seen, no perceived slights ever truly resulted in the revenge being set into motion. Well, aside from what had taken place during the SDC event, which Vil had discussed with him during one of their chats at Heartslabyul, when Trey would wheedle Vil into trying one of his latest creations.
“Naturally, these offenses shall be rectified. For now, on the matter of barbeque. As I have stated, I'm not a huge fan generally, but I do believe there is a time and place for everything. The thought of having a casual date on the pier at a small little restaurant actually sounds quite nice.”
He smiled. The special one. The one that was for Trey and Trey alone. “Only for a very special person would I agree to go to a barbeque restaurant. I hope you realize that, sweetheart.”
Trey blushed as they came to stop by the entrance of the locker rooms. He looked down at his feet, suddenly feeling very shy.
As they'd done just the day before, Vil's thumb and forefinger lifted his chin to make Trey look at him. Trey did, fighting the urge to look away.
His heart was suddenly beating rapidly in his chest and though they were outside and in view of anyone coming from any direction—well, except from behind the locker rooms, perhaps—he was suddenly aware of how alone they were. Sure, a few guys were inside the locker rooms, but the sounds they caused inside were muffled pretty well by the door.
“Trey. I know we're doing this at your pace and I still absolutely will not be your boyfriend until you ask me properly, but I must admit that I grow impatient every time we're alone together and I can't kiss you.”
Trey blushed again, his neck and face and even his ears feeling hot. His throat suddenly felt very dry. The realization that he was about to have not only his first kiss with Vil, but his very first kiss ever, sent a wave of almost panic through him.
Vil seemed to notice something was off. He squeezed the other’s hand before lifting it up so that Vil could kiss the back of it. This had the instant effect of pulling a smile from Trey.
Why did Vil have such an effortless way of making him feel like he was safe and sound?
He hoped that Vil felt the same about Trey and tried not to let the worry that he wasn't—and never would be—enough sink into his thoughts.
“I'm not a patient person. I try, but I'm far too ambitious and idleness is the enemy of productivity and personal growth. That said, I don't really mind waiting when it comes to you.”
Then he did something that Trey never would have expected. He used his thumb to brush along his lower lip, causing Trey to shiver agreeably. Their eyes were locked as time seemed to stop. Trey had never before cared that he hadn't ever dated but in this moment, he wished he had a bit more experience at the very least.
Vil was just so wonderful and intelligent and beautiful and Trey was still having a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that Vil liked him. Especially how much he liked him.
“That said… I would really like permission to kiss you before yet another spudling interrupts us.”
If Trey were being truthful, he was a little put off. After all, he had this fantasy of sweeping Vil off his feet. Yet here the Pomfiore Housewarden was, sweeping Trey off his feet instead. In the end, however, he decided that it didn't matter how everything happened, as long as it actually happened for them.
Trey licked his lips, golden eyes falling to the other's mouth and back up, meeting his gaze once more.
“I'd be a fool to deny you,” Trey said finally. Vil smiled the warmest smile to date and moved in closer, tilting his head back just the barest amount.
The blond leaned in, eyes closing as he pressed his mouth firmly, but almost tentatively. It was an interesting mix of nervousness and teasing and it was very effective at filling Trey with the desire for so much more.
Vil pulled away for a moment to look at him. Seemingly, he was pleased with what he saw, because he was suddenly pulling Trey closer with a hand on the small of his back, moving his other hand to grip the side of Trey’s neck.
Trey tried and failed at not losing himself to Vil's kisses. In moments, the Heartslabyul Vice Housewarden was drowning in the sensations and the resultant emotions that erupted inside. If he weren't scientifically minded, he'd begin to worry that his heart might explode.
He realized a little too late when Vil pulled away, chasing after his mouth before it hit him they were no longer kissing. Vil laughed, the smile on his face fond and delighted at his reaction.
“How was that, sweetheart?” He asked, lightly brushing his fingers through the hair at the back of his neck. Trey blushed.
“I'm a bit embarrassed to admit just how much I enjoyed it.”
—
They didn't have much time to spend together. As voices sounded from the direction of the field, coming closer, Vil pulled away with a sigh. He stole a quick peck to Trey's forehead before releasing him completely. He then took Trey's hand, guiding them into the locker rooms.
They spent the rest of the time showering, obviously alone. Because they were students. At school. Who would never engage in inappropriate behavior. Yes, Trey was thoroughly attracted to Vil. The idea of a shower with him, however, was far too overwhelming. He'd just had his first kiss and first kiss with Vil simultaneously, after all. That was more than enough for a while. Especially since he didn't expect the kisses to stop now that that particular dam had been opened. Vil's kisses were much too addicting to have to wait too much longer for more.
Once they were both in school uniforms and Vil had touched up his makeup, the two left together, hand in hand.
Trey marveled at how easy and natural it felt to hold Vil's hand. If he looked at Vil as his Vil, he was able to compartmentalize his Vil from the Vil that was famous and rich and quite possibly the prettiest person in the world.
While he accepted those parts of Vil and supported him completely, he found that if he focused on the Vil he truly knew, it was easier to see just how well they could work as a couple.
When they reached the hall where they would part until dinner time, Vil surprised Trey by lifting his hand up to kiss the back of it.
Trey blushed, but did not look away from the other teen. Instead, he just marveled.
Maybe there was some luck in the last name Clover after all. He was quite possibly the luckiest guy in the world. It also warmed him to know that Vil would likely say the same thing in regards to Trey.
He wished he understood why. Exactly what it was this incredible person saw in him. But as he'd already decided, it didn't matter. All that mattered was that it was his reality and that he would do everything in his power to keep Vil happy, safe, and secure.
“See you at dinner, sweetheart.”
“See you at dinner, Vil.”
They headed for their respective classes, each tossing the other a quick glance before entering the classrooms.
—
“You two are absolutely twitterpated and it's driving Cay-Cay cray-cray,” Cater whined when he and Trey crossed paths on the way to the mirror room.
Trey smiled apologetically and shrugged. The mention of himself and Vil however only served to bring the other to his mind once more.
That brought to memory the several kisses they'd shared and suddenly, he couldn't stop smiling. Heat rose up the back of his neck as he quickly turned away, heading deeper into the dorm.
Cater, not at all deterred by his silence, was on his heels.
“What!? What happened? You don't normally look like that. Scratch that. You don't ever look like that, Trey. What—”
Trey turned back to look at him. Well, more like he looked just past him, as if he was in a daze. “He kissed me.”
Silence fell between them for a long moment before the sharpest squeal-like sound he'd ever heard escaped the ginger as the teen gripped his arms in a congratulatory manner.
“ My best friend and Vil Schoenheit kissed!”
Trey rolled his eyes and shook his head with an amused laugh.
“Ah, so you're more excited about what it can do for you than you are for your best friend.”
The implications of this hit the Heartslabyul third in command hard and he suddenly was hemming and hawing as he backtracked on what he'd said.
“Cater. It's fine. I'm just teasing you.”
Cater made a face at him. “I guess I deserved it. Still, congratulations. I don't wanna be… y’know… that guy or whatever but it's kind of… mind boggling.”
Trey looked up. He frowned for a moment, not sure what to make of the comment. It didn't seem like Cater meant anything offensive by it. More a vague observation. Honestly, Trey felt he agreed to some level.
“Isn't that the truth? But I'm truly happy about it, regardless of how often I have to pinch myself to prove to myself that I'm not dreaming.”
Cater laughed.
They fell into companionable silence until Cater broke it suddenly, his green eyes sharp with interest.
“So… how was it? Kissing Vil Schoenheit?”
Trey gave him a look of disbelief.
“I do not kiss and tell, Cater. You should already know this.”
A beat. Then. “I mean technically you did kiss and tell, so…”
Trey opened his mouth but closed it a second later. “I'm not going into detail about my physical intimacy with my boyfriend, Cater.”
Cater gasped and Trey looked delightfully surprised.
All this time he'd been worried how he'd be able to come up with the courage to tell people who his boyfriend was. Not out of shame for Vil, but rather the second hand embarrassment he was certain Vil's fans would feel for the celebrity the moment they saw Trey.
Apparently, it'd been a lot easier than he'd thought it ever could be.
Cater grinned. “So it's official then?”
Trey shook his head. “No, but with all luck, after tomorrow’s date it will be.”

Chapter Text
Trey couldn't believe it. All morning, until it was time to meet Vil in the Mirror Chamber, he'd gone through a sort of trance. He moved on auto-pilot, fueled by nervous energy.
He showered, dressed, brushed his hair and teeth, checked he had his wallet and pen and everything else three times, and finally downed a quick breakfast.
Finally, it was time to head out. He looked over his outfit in the lounge mirror, taking in the overall look which Cater had helped with. Honestly, he looked good. The colors and overall outfit seemed to be a mix of Trey and Heartslabyul, but without being too obvious.
Cater had even managed to put in a few of his own touches, effectively signing his work.
Trey felt confident in it, which surprised him. Cater was a lot more risky with his fashion choices, but he had pulled through and picked Trey out an outfit that was both worthy of himself and Vil. All out of the clothes he already owned.
Impressive, Trey thought to himself, making a mental note to tell Cater he thought as much later. He was far too nervous, confidence boosting outfit notwithstanding.
As promised by Riddle, no one was present in the lounge. Nor the front of the house. When he finally stepped outside, pulling on his jacket, Trey noted that students were scarce here as well.
Trey laughed. He was positive most of them were well within earshot, watching him as he left.
“I better not hear from Riddle and Carter that any of you have been misbehaving.”
There were some hushed whispers and some laughing. Finally, two of the hidden away came out from their hiding spaces.
“Of course it's you. Can the two of you not get into trouble for one day?”
The bright red haired freshman rolled his eyes in an exaggerated manner, but was grinning goodnaturedly. His not-quite-shadow stood next to him, trying to stand as straight and tall as possible as he held up a fist and thrust out his chin.
“You're going to knock his socks off with this date, Trey!”
Ace snickered. “Unless he completely chokes.” Then a look of alarm crossed his face as the other two started at him. “Figuratively, I mean! Obviously, geez.”
Deuce glared at the red head. “Do you want to make him nervous? He's probably already nervous and you're just making it worse, stupid.”
Ace glared back at Deuce. “No, I'm not! If Trey was so nervous he can't handle a little ribbing, then he's sharkbait already, idiot!”
Trey, who could feel the distant twinge of a stress headache coming on, decided to nip this argument in the bud before it got far too out of hand. He really did not want to be late to meet up with Vil. It was the reason he'd gotten ready and planned to leave early in the first place.
“Guys. You really need to work on communication. I don't think a single person would realize the two of you are boyfriends with the way you guys are always at each other’s throats.”
Both of them stopped, looked at one another, before both smiled at him in their own signature way. Ace was all eagerness and support. Deuce was all camaraderie and warmth.
Not for the first time, Trey was reminded how much these two reminded him of his younger siblings in a lot of ways. He had come to think of these two as brothers; as much as one classmate can of another, in any case.
“You guys came to wish me luck, even though I remember asking Riddle to specifically make certain you two were far too busy to attempt it?”
Ace’s grin only doubled, an impish expression taking over his face while Deuce, at least, had the decency to look appropriately chastised.
“Sorry, Trey. It's just that we know this—and Vil—are important to you, and while I'm really surprised—I didn't even know you two liked each other and well, it's Vil! Not that I think he's a bad guy or anything, just not what I expected, I guess.”
Trey laughed at that as Ace rolled his eyes halfheartedly.
“Babe. The heart wants what it wants and all that. Duh. Or I wouldn't be stuck with a Goody-Two-Shoes wannabe for a partner.” Though the words seemed harsh, the tone and look in Ace’s eyes was anything but.
Deuce blushed. Trey resisted the urge to sigh. Now, he had the very possible risk that they were about to get lovey-dovey and he didn't really have time to witness that right then.
“Well, thanks.” The two younger teens both almost jumped, apparently having forgotten he was there. Trey snorted. “I appreciate the sentiment. Now, get back inside and back to work on whatever it was Riddle had the two of you doing. Before he realizes you're gone.”
The mention of the quick-tempered Housewarden sobered them up. They waved their goodbyes, wishing him luck once more. Trey watched them head back inside, praying to the Seven that they actually got back to the task they'd been assigned.
He would really hate to have such a wonderful time with Vil, only to have the experience dampened by a mutiny caused warpath.
Allowing himself one last glance at the dorm, with a wave to any other students who might be watching, Trey made his way through the portal.
—
Vil was not in the Mirror Chamber when he arrived.
He thanked the Seven, before silently wishing the Mirror Chamber actually had a mirror he could use to check his reflection.
Chiding himself mentally, he closed his eyes and took a few moments to calm himself.
Everything is fine. Everything will be fine. No, better than fine. Today is going to be absolutely wonderful.
As if his thought had caused it, sharp but heavy steps sounded in the halls nearby, coming closer at a steady pace. Trey opened his eyes just as Vil arrived.
The Heartslabyul Vice Housewarden had been about to ask where he'd gone, out of mere curiosity since he hadn't come from Pomfiore’s mirror. That changed the moment he took in what Vil was wearing.
A purple garment- that looked like soft cotton long-sleeved t-shirt material, but was the length of a dress- draped the tall male. Thigh length hem gave way to rich brown stockings and black ankle boots with lace effects. A couple of elegant necklaces hung around his neck.
And his hair…
The Pomfiore Housewarden’s two-toned hair was wavier than usual. When Vil turned his head to glance around briefly, Trey could see that a cute little braid was weaved into part of it. Trey really longed to brush his fingers through the pretty tresses just to see how long it would take for the braid to come completely undone.
“You look beautiful,” he said breathlessly, when he finally found his voice. To be honest, he wasn't completely sure how long he'd been staring, but he couldn't be blamed.
Vil had him absolutely mesmerized.
The blond blushed a pretty rose and his lashes seemed to flutter as he looked down for a brief moment before looking up again. He was smiling.
He was smiling Trey's smile.
Vil closed the distance between them and wrapped both arms around his neck, stepping in close. While the boots he wore were different from Vil's usual footwear, they were just as tall so Trey had to tilt his neck some to keep the other's gaze.
“You know. I get called beautiful every single day. I couldn't tell you the number of times per day. Far too many to count.” He reached up to twirl at Trey’s hair at the back of his neck with his fingers. “When you say it though…”
He seemed to have trouble finding the exact words to describe what Trey calling him beautiful did to him, but in the end he just sighed. “It feels really good when you say it.”
Trey smiled and—throwing caution to the wind—kissed Vil deeply. He did his best to remember how Vil had kissed him just the day before, allowing Vil to take the lead once again.
The green haired third year didn't know how long they stood kissing in the Mirror Chamber, but after a while it became almost impossible to get enough air. Begrudgingly, Trey ended the kiss, both himself and Vil panting to catch their breath.
“Mmm, you learn very quickly, sweetheart. Then again, we already knew that.”
They pulled away from one another, albeit with some difficulty as one or both of them would go in for another kiss. Finally, hand in hand, the two Night Raven students stepped into the teleportation mirror that would connect them to Sage Island Harbor.

Chapter Text
Sage Island Harbor was relatively quiet. There was a bit of a crowd, but it was mostly scattered along the pier and little shops that made up the main square just off the port.
Vil and Trey walked out of the portal and onto the cobbled road that was the main square.
“So, aside from our lunch at the barbeque establishment, what else did you have planned for us today?”
Trey smiled at him, his grin a little playful.
“Nothing.”
Vil stopped, causing Trey to stop.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I thought I just heard you say that you did not plan anything, but a barbeque lunch for our first date.”
Trey could tell the other wasn't actually upset. This was just the way he teased those whom he had a deeper connection with. The green haired teen nodded.
“That's right. I didn't plan anything, but the barbecue.”
Vil released his hand in favor of reaching out, adjusting his jacket as he watched what he did. Trey, knowing this was just something he would have to get used to when he and Vil dated, allowed it with a fond smile.
“Why?”
It was Trey’s turn to reach up and grip the other's chin with thumb and forefinger, raising Vil's head so their eyes met.
“Because your whole life is planned day to day, hour to hour. Minute to minute, in a lot of cases, I bet. So I decided last night, as I was brushing my teeth, that this date—and any that may hopefully follow—will be as unplanned as possible.”
Vil’s eyes grew wider as his mouth fell open slightly. Trey didn't think many people could catch him by surprise. He wondered if it would be considered rude to be proud that he could.
“Vil.” He brushed the other’s jaw with his thumb, but didn't break eye contact. “You deserve a little spontaneity sometimes as well.”
Vil laughed, the sound a little breathlessly. Pink tinged his cheeks and this close, Trey could see where it rose a little up the sides of his neck.
“You're taking care of me.” It wasn't a question. “Here I was, thinking I would be the one to take care of you.”
Trey blushed. Then, though it was cheesy—perhaps a little bit cringy, Trey replied, “We will take care of each other.”
Vil grinned wryly at that.
“That should be easy enough. The two of us have more than enough experience taking care of others.”
Trey kissed Vil, pleased to find that he was becoming more comfortable and confident in his abilities with every new kiss.
“Well, your logic is sound, even if I don't like it.”
Trey smiled, unwrapping himself from the other to take his hand.
“You'll get used to it. If you ever need help in that department, though, ask Yuu and Grim. They are notorious for their spontaneity.”
Vil laughed at that as he laced their fingers.
“As if I need more stress. No. We can leave being spontaneous on our dates.”
Trey chuckled, pulling Vil closer to kiss his temple before leading him off in a random direction.
“Well. What would you like to do? I assume you enjoy shopping… There are plenty of little shops and boutiques. Why don't we start there?”
Vil’s eyes lit up at the word shopping and he nodded at his date’s suggestion.
“That sounds perfect. Let's be on our way.”
—
Vil guided them once they were at the first line of shops. Trey wasn't generally a fan of shopping if there wasn't a need, but he found it surprisingly enjoyable to watch Vil as they walked along the sidewalk, turned a corner, and started to walk down the next line.
“The trick is to get an overview of what shops are present and what kind of products each one generally caters to. Then you take the information you acquired and—depending on your shopping needs—decide where to go first, then next, and so on.”
Trey grinned. “Sounds efficient.”
Vil beamed at him.
“I will admit that it took many years to devise my shopping plan.” Then, in a little stage whisper, “I loathe that I must also admit that I don't always stick to the plan. If something catches my eye that I absolutely must have, I will let nothing stop me from getting my hands on it. Not even my own plans.”
He chuckled lightly along with Trey, who was laughing deeply. Trey was struck again by how musical Vil's laugh was. He was finding that Vil's laugh—his true laugh—could quite easily become one of his favorite sounds in the world. It also had him wondering what his laugh sounded like to Vil… and if he liked it.
The line of shops finished, the two teens made their way down the path that led to the pier. Trey idly rubbed the pad of his thumb along the back of Vil's hand. Vil squeezed his hand in reply. They continued to walk in comfortable silence, Vil nodding toward the side of the pier that he wanted to check out first. Trey let Vil lead him on, making sure to look around rather than just watch Vil the whole time, like he kept trying to do.
Honestly, who could blame him?
Vil was striking.
Still, good things in moderation, he reminded himself.
They continued on, looking over each shop front and peeking in the open doors and store windows. Once they'd looked at every shop, Vil suggested they find somewhere to sit for a short break.
Trey led them over to a little bench against the railing of the pier. A small smattering of people were listening to a busker not far from them, and while Trey could hear the music clearly, it wasn't so loud that he and Vil would be unable to hear one another.
“Alright. I definitely need to check out the fabric store. There's also a new cosmetics store that I want to look into. Potential to network with a local business not far from school would be lovely.”
Trey squeezed his hand. “Just as long as you contact them after our date.”
Vil looked up and made a face.
“Right. Spontaneity .” He then made another face that told Trey just how much Vil liked the word. He chuckled and, before he could talk himself out of it, he turned to look at Vil. When Vil turned his body toward him, Trey kissed him gently. Vil returned the kiss in kind.
They were smiling when they pulled away, opening their eyes and looking at each other.
A new tune struck up then. It was peppier and light. Fun. Spontaneous.
Spontaneous…
An idea came to mind. He just didn't know how Vil would feel about it. Sure, he did a lot of dancing for different industry jobs, but that didn't mean he enjoyed any sort of dancing.
Well, he couldn't very well preach something without practicing it.
Standing up before he could lose his nerve, Trey held his hand out to his date. “Dance with me, Vil?”
Vil looked up, light purple eyes sparkling in the morning sun. Trey was once more pleased that he'd managed to surprise Vil yet again.
After a few brief moments, Vil glanced at the area where a few people were already dancing. He then smiled, obviously pleased, and rested his hand in Trey’s.
“I'd be delighted to.”
Tuning out his mind that told him he was—at best—an average dancer, Trey reminded himself that Vil had agreed to this date, he had already admitted to liking him, and had agreed to dance with him. Not once had he asked, or made it a contingency, that Trey absolutely knew how to dance.
When they reached the edge of the small crowd of dancing people, Trey looked at Vil with a wry smile.
“Do you want to lead or —”
Vil had taken Trey’s hand and placed it at Vil's waist. Releasing it, he placed his hand on Trey’s shoulder as his other hand to Trey’s free hand. This all happened in a matter of seconds, before Vil urged Trey to take the lead so that they could actually dance.
Trey snapped out of it. A silent thank you to his mom, who had thought it might be fun for him to take a few partnered dance classes. Finally, the nightmare was paying off. In the form of a dream.
They came in on the next verse, Trey trying to listen to the words as he did his best to not shame his dance partner with shoddy footwork.
The verse was slower than the chorus, so it was easier to focus on the words the singer sang.
Do I have to tell the story of the thousand rainy days since we first met?
It's a big enough umbrella but it's always me who ends up getting wet.
Trey was struck suddenly, by how familiar the lyrics felt. Almost as if he had been the one to write them, embellished though they were. In his case, at the very least.
Sure there hadn't been a thousand rainy days, and he wasn't always getting wet, but it had been three years since he and Vil had been on the night of their Freshman Orientation. They had been acquaintances in their sophomore year. Then, this year, things changed.
So much had changed.
Most of it for the better. Much of it was thanks to Yuu and Grim.
He decided to buy Yuu and Grim thank you gift, as he truly believed that if it weren't for them, he wouldn't be at this pier with Vil today.
Dancing.
The music picked up. Trey and Vil, along with everyone else, got livelier and looser with their dancing.
Cause every little thing he does is magic, everything he does just turns me on.
Though my life before was tragic, now I know my love for him goes on.
Vil's gaze captured his and the words rang in his head.
Every little thing he does is magic.
This boy. This man . Trey felt completely bewitched by him. And he didn't care who knew it.
“Vil,” Trey said, bringing Vil's hand up to his lips as they came to a stop as the song ended. “Go out with me. Be my boyfriend.” Then, because he had been raised to be polite in all situations, “Please.”
Vil beamed and Trey’s eyes widened as he suddenly had an armful of Vil, which was a little awkward with the height difference due to chunky heeled boots, but they figured it out.
“How about a slow one, for the cute kids,” the singer, who couldn't have been more than four years older than them, announced.
Both Trey and Vil blushed. Cheers and whistles came before a new song started to play, slower.
Trey placed his hands on Vil's waist, taking Vil's hand in his other. Vil then placed his free hand on Trey’s shoulder. They began to dance just as the music started.
“Yes, by the way.”
Trey blinked. “Yes? Yes, what?”
“Yes, I will go out with you and be your boyfriend.”
Trey chuckled. “Oh, that. Yeah. I thought the way you threw yourself at me was a pretty clear answer in the affirmative, but thank you for letting me know.”
Vil gasped. “I did not throw myself at you, sweetheart.”
Trey just smiled a warm smile at his boyfriend.
“Whatever you say.”
The singer began to sing then and so they both fell silent. Trey didn't feel it right to not listen to the song that had been played especially for them.
Baby
Wrap me up in all your
I want you
In my arms
So let me hold you
I'll never let you go again,
Like I did
Oh, I used to say
I would never fall in love again
Until I found him
I said, I would never fall
Unless it's you I fall into
I was lost within the darkness
But then I found him.
I found him.
Trey held Vil's eyes as they danced, sensing others around them, but still somehow in their own little world. The words, even more than the last song, seemed to have been written by Trey for Vil.
The song continued and before he knew it, he was singing the words of the chorus lightly to Vil as his boyfriend blushed and smiled, obviously pleased.
As the song ended, Vil and Trey applauded and thanked her before heading back to the bench.
“You know what, sweetheart,” Vil said loftily. “Why don't we just pick a shop and we'll go look?”
Trey grinned from where he stood but raised a brow.
“What about your plan?”
Vil stood, placing a hand on his hip.
“I don't need a plan when I've got y—”
Trey kissed him gently. Then a little more deeply.
By the time they'd finished their shopping, had lunch, and returned to the school, Trey felt much more confident about the whole kissing thing.
Besides, Vil certainly hadn't had any objections.

Chapter Text
Riddle frowned as his eyes fell on the small envelope parcel on his desk. The office space, given to the students who were participating in the extracurricular summer trip that was offered toward the end of the last school year, was empty.
Though Sage Harbor was doing much better as far as visitors were concerned. Still, with the extra tourists, there was a lot of remodeling and maintenance that needed to be done.
He was on his day off from the program, already having plans to spend time with his boyfriend, who lived nearby. Sort of.
Riddle looked around again before picking up the parcel and looking at the packing slip. There, written in his best friend's neat scrawl, was his name along with the address he'd given Trey for the summer. With a quick check at the return address, he saw it had shipped from Scalding Sands.
“Oh right,” he announced to no one. Trey had said he and Vil would be taking a summer trip to the Scalding Sands. From what he could recall, Trey had asked Kalim and Jamil if they could ask the Al-Asim chef if Trey could study under him for the summer.
The chef had not only agreed, but Kalim’s family had insisted that he and Vil stay at the palace with them.
With a fond smile, Riddle opened the parcel briskly. A quick look in and Riddle could see two unknown objects at the bottom of the package as well as the letter. He hummed his interest, but pulled the letter out first.
Taking a seat in his desk chair, Riddle unfolded the paper and read.
Hey Riddle,
Hope this letter and the gifts get to you alright. I've never had to send something so far away, but Jamil assured it would be in good hands.
Time in the Scalding Sands has been wonderful. Thanks to Vil, I decided to finally sit down and decide what I really wanted. I realized that I do want to take over my parent's shop, but I want more than that. There's still so much I want to learn about cooking and baking, especially in regards to magic. I can start here, with the Al-Asim cook, Sameer.
When I'm not studying with Sameer, I'm with Vil. He's not used to having so much time on his hands and it drives him crazy to not have plans. He was the one who proclaimed that he would try his hand at spontaneity for the whole trip though, so don't feel too bad for him.
We'll be at the school for a week into the new year to say hi and attend orientations for the internships. I'll have to find time to hang out with all of you before we leave again.
Vil told me to tell you hi and that he sends along his well wishes for your summer. He also sends along the hope that Floyd is not running you ragged.
We've sent a present for you and him both.
Looking forward to your response. Hope you're well.
Trey
Riddle was so focused on the letter that he hadn't heard anyone come in. A second later he was pulled into an awkward, almost uncomfortable hug from the back.
“Ack!”
“Mmm. Goldfishie~”
Riddle sighed, closing his eyes as he ceased struggling. He had learned rather quickly once he and Floyd had started dating, that it was best to relax than to struggle when dealing with the bone-crushing hugs Floyd seemed determined to give.
“Floyd. We've talked about this. Stop sneaking up on me.”
“Aww, Riddle. Baby. I just missed you so much.”
He renewed his snuggling efforts as Riddle reached a small hand up to pat his boyfriend on one of his arms.
“I'm right here, Floyd. I'm here for the whole summer. It doesn't take you long to get to land with how fast you swim. Don't you think you're exaggerating?”
Floyd grinned goodnaturedly, but shook his head. Riddle could feel rather than see the action. If he'd been facing the taller teen, Riddle would have kept his face impassive. As it were, he wasn't and so he allowed himself a moment to smile contentedly.
Floyd Leech was a loud, crude, brash, energetic young man, but Riddle was beginning to see just how much more there was to Floyd than he'd ever cared to see before.
Placing the letter on the desk, Riddle poured out the contents of the parcel and took in two items roughly the length of his hand wrapped in tissue paper and cellophane.
“Oooh. What're those?”
“Obviously, you can see that I don't know that yet, Floyd. Trey and Vil sent them for us.”
“Presents! Let's open them!*
And just like that, Floyd left him in favor of making fast work of the wrappings.
On the desk now sat two smooth stone prisms, one peridot and one ruby. There was a small piece of paper as well that read:
Peridot for Floyd—brings good health, restful sleep, and peace to relationships by balancing emotions and mind.
Ruby for Riddle—enhances confidence, improves leadership qualities, protects against negative energies, and attracts career opportunities.
Riddle snorted, but couldn't help himself in picking up his ruby prism. Floyd picked his own up and made a face.
“Aww man. This is just a pretty rock.”
Riddle shook his head with a light laugh. Standing, he turned to Floyd and closed his hands around the one still holding the green gem.
“Well, boring or not, I'd like you to hold onto it. Keep it on you. Can you do that for me, Floyd? I'd appreciate it.”
Floyd, more than happy to have Riddle's attention on him, grinned agreeably.
“Mmm. Maybe. But only if I get a kiss out of it.”
Riddle let out a long-suffering sigh that might have been a bit exaggerated. It didn't last long, however, as he wrapped his arms around his annoyingly tall boyfriend’s neck and Floyd's arms wrapped around his middle. They regarded one another in silence for a few moments before Floyd, having grown impatient, kissed him instead.
Riddle, happy and content, sent out a silent thank you to Trey.
If it wasn't for him and his impossible crush on Vil Schoenheit, after all, he never in a million years would have considered Floyd Leech as a potential partner.
“I really should write Trey a reply,” he said when they stopped kissing in exchange for breathing. Floyd shook his head.
“Do it later, Goldfish! I'm taking you to lunch!”
Putting the letter away, Riddle pocketed his ruby and took Floyd's hand, lacing their fingers.
“Fine. Let's go. I have things I need to do when I get back.”
Together, the short red-head and impossibly tall merman left for their date.
Millions of miles away, Trey Clover and Vil Schoenheit had just woken up to start their day.
Notes:
Author's Notes: WE. HAVE. MADE. IT. MY FRIENDS!
The promised Epilogue, featuring a dating Riddle and Floyd.
But that's not all. It's also a reminder of what's to come: i.e. their spinoff.
Here's the adverts for the new story:

Okay, now! Last, as always, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support while I wrote this fic. As I said in an earlier note, please do not be shy. Let me know your thoughts, fave parts, etc!
Also, I will be doing more than just Florid. Leona and possibly some others will have their stories as well. You'll just have to wait and see!
If you're an artist and want to do any scenes or just characters from this particular fic, you have my explicit permission to use the story for the art as long as I'm linked to where it was posted. That goes for any of my fics.
Thank you all so much once again. My heart is full now that I started AND finished this really great fic.
Until next time!
