Chapter Text
With Christmas looming around the corner, the house was adorned with twinkling lights and the scent of freshly baked cookies wafted through the rooms. Kara had gone out and purchased an absurdly large real Christmas tree which would probably leave pine needles all over the place that also nearly took the door off its hinges when she brought it home, which they were in the process of decorating. It would probably stay up until halfway through January before it was eventually pulled down and tossed out. Because they had been so busy, they didn’t have time to decorate until Christmas eve.
Kara and Lena worked together to untangle the string of lights while their kids enthusiastically placed ornaments on the branches of the tree. The sound of cheerful music played softly in the background, setting the perfect atmosphere for the jolly occasion.
Ethan with his mysterious grin, reached in the box and pulled out the star. “Mom, can we put this on top already?”
Kara chuckled and ruffled his hair. “Not just yet, bud. We’ll save that for the grand finale. First we must make sure that this tree is decked out in all its glory.”
Meanwhile, Lena had ventured into the kitchen to put the finishing touches on a batch of gingerbread men cookies then carried the tray into the living room, setting them down next to the kids glasses of milk.
With all the decorations hanging neatly, Ethan grabbed the star again and waved his arm at Kara. “Mom, now can we put it up?”
“Yes. Now you may place it on top. Do you think you can float up there or do you want mom to help?”
Lena watched on as her son thought about what to do.
Ethan shook his head and held his arms in the air. “Can you help me?”
“Sure, my little prince.” Kara lifted him into her arms so he could reach the very top and placed the star, making sure it was straight and that it wouldn’t fall off.
“I think that looks great, Ethan.” Lena gave him a kiss to his head as Kara put him down.
With her decorating done, Lily rushed over to snag a cookie and bit it’s head clean off before picking off its gumdrop buttons. “Thank you mommy! They are really good!”
“Lily, baby slow down or you are going to choke but you’re welcome sweetheart. Save some for your brother as well as our guests who are due to arrive shortly.” Lena set some more down.
Lily stopped chewing and frowned. “Who is coming?”
“Yeah mommy, who is it?” Ethan joined in, snapping his gingerbread man’s leg off and shoved it in his mouth.
Kara who had finished wrapping the lights around the tree, received a message on her phone. With a sparkle in her eye, she turned to Lena. “They are almost here. About five minutes away.”
Lena couldn’t help but smile, knowing the joy this surprise would bring to her kids. Together, she and Kara decided to keep it a secret when Sam called them to say that she and Ruby would be spending the Christmas holidays with them this year.
As the doorbell rang, the kids exchanged puzzled glances. Kara, wearing a huge smile, opened the door to reveal Sam and Ruby standing on the other side.
“Surprise!” Sam exclaimed, holding a basket of holiday treats.
Ethan and Lily’s eyes widened in surprise. “Aunt Sam! Ruby!”
Their expressions quickly shifted from confused to pure delight and they rushed forwards to wrap Sam and Ruby in hugs.
“Aunt Sam!” Ethan climbed into Sam’s arms after she passed the basket over to Kara. I didn’t know you were coming!”
“Well, your moms kept it a surprise. God I’ve missed you little man.” Sam cuddled him to her chest then put him down and did the same to Lily. “And I’ve also missed you a bunch too, young lady.”
“I have missed you too, Aunt Sam.” Lily gave her a kiss to her cheek.
“Ruby!” Ethan gave her a hug when she crouched down.
Ruby giggled. “Hi, Ethan!” She balanced him on her hip and dragged her luggage in the door.
Sam placed her bags by the couch and took a seat, reaching out for the basket. “Now, what I have in here are some peppermint candy canes which I know are both your favorite along with some holiday fudge for your parents.” She motioned for Ruby to open the large duffle bag they had brought with them.
Ruby pulled numerous presents out for everyone and placed them under the tree.
“You brought us gifts!” Lily glanced at a few that were for her, some for her brother and mothers but also one big one with both their names on it.
“We did.” Ruby dragged her bags to the guest room situated on the third floor, then went to freshen up in the bathroom after their long drive over.
Sam stood to gather her bags and walked into the guest room next to her daughter and did the same as Ruby, coming out a little while later.
“How was the trip over?” Lena asked as she began to prepare dinner which wasn’t for a few hours, yet she liked to get it done early while Kara decided to take the kids to the mall.
“It was very long but good. Gosh I haven’t seen the kids since last Christmas when you lot came over and they’ve gotten so big. How are they with their powers?” Sam sipped on a cup of eggnog. “Oh, this is good.”
“They are doing alright. Lily is more into them, Ethan not so much but he tries to get involved alongside his sister and Kara. He’s come a long way since we spent a weekend a few months back at the beach house but still, my baby boy prefers science more than anything.” Lena smiled.
“He’s like your little mini me, you know but also very cute and growing up fast.” Sam moved over to the couch to get comfortable after driving for hours. “And Lily has gotten taller too.”
Lena finished off what she was doing and sat next to Sam with her own cup of eggnog. “Ruby is also growing up. She’s what…” she took a sip. “Ten now?”
“Yep she sure is.” Sam downed her cup then poured her another. “Anyway, enough about the kids, fill me in on what’s been happening at work. Did Edge really accuse you of trying to kill him?”
Lena laughed, took another sip then caught Sam up to speed on what’s been happening at L-Corp.
With the Christmas spirit in full swing now, Kara wanted to treat the kids to a festive adventure. Their mission: To take a picture with Santa Claus. The girls with Ethan on Kara’s shoulders, entered through the doors and into the mall that was bustling with people and children everywhere.
As Lily held Ruby’s hand, her eyes lit up at the festive atmosphere. “Everything is so sparkly in here.” She bounced with excitement.
“Can you see Santa’s workshop from way up there?” Kara asked her son, who was just as excited as his sister and Ruby.
“Yeah! He’s over there with all his reindeer!” Ethan held his arm out and pointed to the blow-up reindeer surrounding a small white picket fence.
“Alright my prince, lead the way.” Kara, with a gleam of excitement in her own eyes, followed her son’s outstretched arm and walked them to Santa’s workshop where a long line had formed.
As they waited in line, the kids all chatted about their Christmas wishes and the surprises they hoped to find under the tree. They knew that there was already presents there but hoped that Santa would visit and drop more.
Finally, it was their turn to meet Santa. First up was Ethan, who happily wandered over and climbed up to sit on his knee.
“Well, hello there young one! What’s your name and what do you want Santa to get for you this Christmas?”
“My name is Ethan, Mr. Santa sir and well I would like new art supplies because I like to draw and maybe a telescope so I can see the stars better.” Ethan said.
“Ah, a little artist and astronomer in the making. Well, young man, I’ll see what I can do.” He winked and then their photo was taken, Ethan climbing off to let his sister have her turn.
“Hello, Santa.” Lily climbed up to sit.
“Well how do you do, young lady. What can Santa get you for Christmas?”
“I would like a new bike, please. A pretty pink one and a pink helmet.” Lily said with a smile. “I’ve been really good this year but Santa, there is one more thing I wish to ask you.”
“And what is that little one?”
“I wish that people who don’t have anything can celebrate Christmas with food and presents just like us.”
“I think that is a very good wish and if you continue to be good right up until then, Santa will definitely make it happen.”
“I would like that. Thank you Santa.” Lily got her photo taken before Santa gestured them all over for a family photo. The photographer handed over their respective photos as they all left.
There was just one more thing Kara had to do before they could leave. “Hey Ruby, can you take the kids and go get some ice cream for a bit. There’s something I have to do.” She winked, Ruby catching on, quickly took the money from her and disappeared.
Arriving home, Kara sent the kids inside first so she could sneak their other gifts past them without them noticing to hide them in the closet to be wrapped up later that night then placed under the tree once they were in bed.
“Alright you two, upstairs to get cleaned up because dinner will be ready soon then you both can watch a Christmas movie before bed, ok.” Lena instructed watching as they sped up the stairs and into their bathrooms. “Your mom will be up to check on you.”
Kara went up ten minutes later to check that they were doing what they were supposed to be doing and not snooping around for presents like they did last year, relieved to see that they were both in their pyjamas, ready for dinner.
“Come on, dinner is going to be served in a moment.” Kara picked them both up, smooshed their faces with kisses making them laugh and carried them down the stairs to get them seated.
As the evening unfolded, the house echoed with the sounds of cherished traditions and shared moments, enjoying the festive feast prepared by Lena. The surprise visit had turned a lovely Christmas Eve into an unforgettable celebration of love, friendship and the joy of being together during the most magical time of the year.
“Mommy, can we make a pillow fort please?” Ethan peered up at Lena with the cutest puppy eyes he could make that always made her cave at the sight of them.
“Of course, you can, baby. Get your sister and Ruby to help.” Lena put their photos of Santa on the fridge.
“Yay!” Ethan cheered, gathering every single pillow he could find in the house and began to construct his fort.
Lily ran to fetch a couple of blankets for them to lie on and got settled on one side of Ruby with her brother on the other then started the movie.
They weren’t even halfway through when light snores caught the attention of all the adults.
Kara carried Ethan upstairs while Lena took Lily and Sam woke Ruby, sending her to bed as well.
Lena tucked her kids in then went down and picked up all the pillows, tossed them all back in their right places, draped the blankets over the back of the couch before Kara came down in her suit.
“Supergirl emergency.” Kara said as she pulled her wife into her for a kiss. “Wanna tag along?” She asked as the lights in the house suddenly flickered for a second. “Well that didn’t seem good.”
“Even on Christmas Eve, a superheroes work is never done.” Lena gave her a smile. “Sure, my love. Let me get my Exosuit from the vault and I’ll join you.” She pecked Kara’s lips and walked off in the direction of her lab.
“Don’t you mean the SuperNova?” Kara teased as that’s the name the kids came up with for Lena’s suit.
Lena chuckled. “Oh, my mistake. I meant the SuperNova.”
“Is that what the kids call it?” Sam giggled as she walked down the stairs.
“Yeah. Lena gave them the choice of naming it and that’s what they both came up with.” Kara said. “It’s quite cute actually. We shouldn’t be long. Can you keep an eye on the kids?”
“Kara…” Sam arched a brow. “Do you even need to ask. Of course, I will.” She turned when she heard Lena walk up behind her and whistled. “Wow, seeing that on tv versus in real life is so much different.”
“Pretty badass right!” Lena grinned. “A Super and a Luthor working together as a team.”
“You could say that again now go so you can get back before your munchkins wake up.” Sam waved them both out the door. “And be careful!” she said after Lena engaged her helmet and took off.
