CrossOmens: A Long Time to Hope

Summary:

Good Omens Season 3 is on its way. Crowley's literary self, having waited for three decades to see an end to his story, visits his television counterpart with a bottle of wine.

 Page 1 of 4. A digital comic page with limited color, featuring the book and TV versions of Crowley from Good Omens. Book Crowley, carrying an opened wine bottle and two glasses, approaches TV Crowley, who is sitting by himself at the end of a bench. Book Crowley: There you are. Congratulations on your third series. TV Crowley: Piss off. (Undeterred, Book Crowley fills one of the wineglasses from the bottle.) Book Crowley: Oh, I could. But then you’d miss out on this excellent vintage. Been saving it, for when the rest of our story got told. (beat panel) TV Crowley: ‘S not been told yet. Book Crowley: Call me an optimist. Do you want the wine or not? (after a moment of hesitation, TV Crowley makes an irritated noise and accepts the filled wineglass.) TV Crowley: Fine.

Page 2 of 4. (Book Crowley sits down on the bench and fills a wineglass for himself, while TV Crowley downs half of his own drink. As the scene continues, the characters alternate between drinking, talking, and refilling from the bottle sitting between them.) TV Crowley: How’d you do it? Book Crowley: Hm? TV Crowley: Not cock it up. Book Crowley: Who’s to say I didn’t? My story ended when the book did, back in 1990. And it’s a good enough ending. No complaints. But it isn’t the whole story, not as intended. After over thirty years of waiting, I was starting to think we’d never see it. And yet here you are, bringing us there. TV Crowley: (sourly) Lot of good THAT did me. Book Crowley: That’s not my point and you know it!

Page 3 of 4. Book Crowley: My poin-- The thing is. If the sequel had been written as a book? I WOULD have cocked it up. Aziraphale would’ve cocked it up. It would’ve been one disaster after another, largely caused by our own schemes- TV Crowley: (cracks a smile) The M25. Book Crowley: Yes! Exactly! We would’ve made a complete mess of things, and yet somehow it’d all work out in the end. We won’t ever know that for sure, though, because it was never written and never published. But you… YOU get the chance to see your story to the end. To see OUR story to the end.

Page 4 of 4. (TV Crowley looks off to the side, thinking, as Book Crowley reaches for the wine bottle.) TV Crowley: Do you believe that? That it’ll work out in the end? (Book Crowley empties the last drops of wine into his glass.) Book Crowley: I’ve spent six thousand years hoping for the best. Not about to stop now. (Closeup on TV Crowley’s right eye and the eyebrow furrowed over it.) TV Crowley: Is your Aziraphale giving mine a pep talk, then? Book Crowley: Set out around when I did. TV Crowley: You do know they’ll just talk circles around each other for hours before one of ‘em says something genuine by mistake? (They both laugh, and then both grimace.) Book Crowley: Ugh. The worst part is, after all this time it’s almost endearing. TV Crowley: Almost.

Shortly after I heard the announcement that Season 3 had been greenlit, I doodled a series of thumbnails where Book Crowley met TV Crowley to congratulate him. Before I knew it, an entire conversation had emerged in their voices, and I knew I needed to commit it to the page.

Special thanks to my friend Rave, my only acquaintance who lives in the UK, for checking over my script to make sure my American didn't show through too much in the dialogue. Additional thanks to the kind folks in the "Oopsie, Omens" Discord server (devoted to paaminty's delightful AU comic of the same name) for their feedback on my pages-in-progress, and to my friends Silence and Tai for tolerating my fussing about the nuances of drawing and panel placement.

I don't know yet whether I'll be able to write a companion Aziraphale exchange; the Crowleys are correct in that both versions of the angel are too well-versed in saying pleasant nothings to avoid heavy subjects, and I would also like to have them cover something that isn't already mentioned here. Still, I'd enjoy either seeing or writing such a conversation, and it's not off the table.
