Chapter 2: The Problems of a Feminine Teenage Boy

Chapter Text

Spring 6

I groaned lightly, opening my eyes while squinting from the sun's morning rays peeking in from behind my curtains. Seven AM on a Friday morning, which means I have to get ready for school today. I wish that I could stay in bed though; my bed was really comfy right now. Thankfully, I knew that I was going to have Ms. Mana’s class today at nine. But even though it was so early in the morning right now, I had to get up before her class starts to help with my dad's class. I grumbled under my breath, knowing I couldn’t stay in bed any longer.

I didn’t particularly like my dad’s class, and I know that he doesn't like me much either, considering he really favors my classmate, Orland, over me. I used to sometimes wonder if I was adopted. However, looking at the portraits of my great-grandmother, that is my grandpa Byron’s, mother, whom I very closely resembled; it was obvious that I wasn't adopted, just very unlucky with the genes.

It was embarrassing being a boy with such feminine features. Alicia even made a prediction when mom was pregnant with me, telling my parents that I was going to be a girl. My name was supposed to be Cadence, but my parents couldn’t name their son Cadence, so...they chose Leonel. Which isn't a bad name, but I don’t think it fits me very well. My name means young lion. A lion is brave and masculine—the things that I am not. I’m more like my original name, musically rhythmic rather than a young lion.

I grabbed my tote from next to the front door. Dad and I bid my mom and grandpa farewell as we made our way towards the academy.

Our walks were always awkwardly silent. We never had anything to talk about. I know dad wasn’t much of the talkative type either, especially to me, it seemed.

We reached the classroom as I began to help dad prepare for his lectures at one of the desks at the back of the room while he was at the teacher’s desk filing some paperwork. He sighed.

“I’ve gotta go to the library.” He said, “I shouldn’t be too long.”

“‘Kay.” I replied as I heard him walk towards the library down the hall. I sighed, looking down. My mind started to take a trip as I pulled out the supplies from dad's tote. I snapped back to reality when I heard someone clear their throat from behind me. I felt my heart race. I knew exactly who that was!

"H-hey Clara!" I said, turning my attention towards her. I felt my face become warm. "I, uh, didn't hear you come in. What's up?" She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.

"Oh, you know, same old, same old! Worrisome mom, a perfect cousin, an uncle who hates being called uncle." I let out a small chuckle as Clara returned my laugh.

I have always had a huge crush on my best friend! But who wouldn’t? Clara was so beautiful, sweet, strong, and smart! Almost everything I was not. If only I could just tell her how I felt about her! However, I knew she would never return my feelings! I was too...me!

"Sounds troublesome! On the plus side, though, at least your mom, dad, and family love and accept you." I said as Clara placed her hands on her hips and began scolding me.

"Hey! Your family loves you too!" I sighed; if only she really knew.

"But I don't think dad really accepts me; I'm too much like my mom. Plus...well...I'm always mistaken for a girl! I think he'd rather have a masculine son than a wimpy loser like me."

"Hey! That wimpy loser you're talking about...is my best friend!" Clara scolded as I smiled at her, chuckling.

"Thanks, Clara!" It was silent for a moment.

Just tell her how you feel. Go ahead, tell her!

"I'll see you again at nine, 'kay?" She said as I smiled, nodding my head while watching her run out of the academy. I groaned and pounded the desk with my fist once in annoyance. Why couldn’t I tell her?!?

“What on earth did you two talk about that’s gotten you so upset?” I jumped at the sound of my dad’s voice.

“H-how much did you hear?” I asked, hoping he didn't hear the part about us talking about our family. Dad crossed his arms.

“I didn’t hear any of it. I saw Clara leaving the school on my way back from the library. I noticed you were smiling from my position, and as soon as I fully entered the classroom, your whole mood changed.” He said in concern as I blushed.

“It-it was nothing.” I said depressed. Dad shrugged it off before walking back to the teacher’s desk. It was silent for a minute before he broke it.

“You still couldn’t tell her, huh?” He asked as I blushed.

“W-wha-? T-tell her what?” I asked nervously.

“Don’t play dumb with me, Leonel. I’m your father. I know and see everything! And I’ve known about your little crush on Clara for a long while.” Dad admitted. My face felt like it was on fire.

“And you should definitely tell her before it’s too late and someone else sweeps her off her feet.” He finished as I sighed, looking down.

“It’s hard.” I admitted.

“I know. It was difficult for me to tell your mother how I felt.” Dad said as I felt my eyes widen.

“Wait, it was difficult for you to tell mom?” I asked in shock.

“I might have a tough exterior, but I am human. I tried to look and act cool, and I was kind of a jerk to your mother because I really wanted her to like me. I tried to be someone I wasn’t to impress her.” Dad smiled at me before continuing.

“I made your mom cry one day, and I felt awful about it. I never wanted to face her again after making her cry. But Jack pressured me to admit to him why I was a jerk to her. Long story short, your mother was eavesdropping the whole time and heard that I was trying to impress her. But I didn’t need to impress her, because she loved the real me.”

“You made mom cry?” I asked in shock.

“I’ve made her cry twice, and I’ve felt horrible both times.”

“Wait, twice?!?”

“The second time was when she was pregnant with you, and I ate the last bit of salted salmon.” Dad said in a slightly embarrassed tone. That made me laugh. I've never seen dad look so flustered.

“What?” Dad began jokingly. “It was very good salted salmon! I would have cried, too!” I felt elated, actually! This was the first time in a long time that I was actually able to talk to my dad without feeling the need to try and impress him!

Chapter 3: Grandma's Look-a-Like

Spring 7

I jumped at the sound of a very loud thump and some light glass breaking. A chipsqueek started to squeal in fear and run around the room. I groaned. How in the world did it get in?

“Leonel?” Dad exclaimed worriedly, opening my bedroom door. Upon seeing the chipsqueek, his eyes held confusion. “Uh, wha-?”

“I got it, dad.” I sighed in annoyance, opening a nearby window. The chipsqueek saw the opportunity and rushed out of the window as fast as it could.

“Leonel?” Mom said worriedly, rushing into my room and grabbing my face, examining me. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine, mom.” I groaned in embarrassment.

“But I heard a thump and some glass break and-!”

“A chipsqueek got in somehow.” I interrupted her.

“We’ll find out how it got in and patch the hole up later.” Dad sighed as he led mom out of my room. I sighed, looking over towards the shelves where I first saw the chipsqueek. What on earth did it knock down? Everything seemed to be intact behind the glass doors, and even the doors were fine!

I walked over to the shelves to investigate. Looking around, I noticed something small and dusty behind the shelves. I reached for it and pulled what looked like a very nice-looking metal treasure-type chest. Although it was dusty, it was white in color and embellished with pink and blue gemstones, with a large dark red one in the middle of the lid. It looked very fancy! What was this? And where did it come from?

I pulled the top part and groaned. Locked. What was in this box? I lifted it up and sat it on my desk. I rummaged through my desk’s drawers, trying to find something to unlock this box—or, at the very least, pry it open. I curiously examined the lock; it was very unique looking—nothing I had ever seen before. Unlocking this would probably take more skill than I thought.

A knock upon my bedroom door echoed as I jumped slightly, covering the chest with a nearby cloak.

“Ye-yeah?” I asked as my grandpa, Byron, walked in with a smile on his face.

“I’ve come to see if I can help you find that hole.” He stated as I blushed.

“Uh, yeah! Th-thanks, grandpa! It came out around the shelf.” Grandpa walked over towards the shelf.

“That’s odd!” He exclaimed.

“What?” I asked as grandpa looked closely at the shelf.

"I know that Dorothy and Barrett told me they heard some glass breaking, but everything looks intact. Unless." He began to look around the shelf and started feeling for something at the top of the shelf.

“Oh?” He asked in both worry and surprise.

“Wh-what?” I asked.

“It’s gone! It’s—.” He looked over at me, walking over towards me; my heart began to race as his hand reached for my cloak. Oh no! The chest! He pulled my cloak and revealed the box. He made a huge sigh of relief.

“There it is!” He exclaimed happily. “But, Leonel, why on earth were you hiding it?” I blushed.

“I-I didn’t know what it was, and I wanted to open it.” I admitted in shame as grandpa began to laugh.

“If you wanted to open it so badly, you could have asked me! I have the key!”

“Wait? Is this yours?” I asked in surprise.

“No, no. Actually, it was my mother’s. Wait here; I’ll return in a flash!” He left my room as I turned my attention back to the chest. This was my great-grandmother’s? It must be an heirloom of some sort, probably passed down from her mother and her mother before her. I heard footsteps as grandpa came back into the room with a small and unique key and a smile.

“Now, let’s open this!” He exclaimed, placing the key in the lock and turning it. The chest made a few clicking sounds and popped open. I pushed it the rest of the way open as my eyes lit up. There were a lot of old trinkets and papers that probably meant a significant deal to my great-grandmother. Grandpa pulled out a portrait from the box. I looked at the young woman staring back as my eyes widened.

The woman and I really did look a lot alike. The portraits I had originally seen of my great-grandmother were of her as a child, and we only had two. Grandpa told me that most of the portraits were destroyed in a fire that caused them to move to Alvarna.

“She was beautiful, wasn’t she?” Grandpa asked, with tears in his eyes.

“She was.” I said, before curiously looking at her outfit. She was dressed vastly well, almost like royalty!

“Uh, w-was she related to the de Sainte-Coquille family in any way?” I asked nervously as grandpa chuckled.

“No, no! However, she was from a very wealthy family!” I sighed slightly in relief; at least the girl I had a crush on and I weren’t distantly related in any way.

“Oh! This is what broke!” Grandpa exclaimed, holding up a snow globe. I blinked curiously, looking back in the box.

“Oh? But nothing looks wet?” I asked as grandpa laughed.

“This old snow globe had actually dried out a long time ago!” He exclaimed before closing the box, locking it back.

“We can look more at what’s inside tomorrow. It’s getting late, and I’m sure your mother will have my head if I keep you up on a school night!” He walked to my bedroom door frame before turning his head slightly towards me.

“Good night, Leonel.” He said as I smiled.

“Night, grandpa.” I replied, turning the knob of my oil lamp and using my snuffer to extinguish the rest of the flame. I climbed into my bed, staring up at my ceiling. Was my appearance the reason why my grandpa was so close to me? I know he misses her, and apparently he and his mother were close! He could tell her anything that bothered him, and she would listen. Up until her death when dad was younger. I sighed before closing my eyes, letting my dreams take over.

Spring 8

I stepped out of the academy with a smile plastered on my face; I was super proud of the two perfect ice cream cones that I had made! One for me, and one for the most beautiful girl ever! I felt my face heat up as I trudged down the stairs. I turned left to head towards the de Sainte-Coquille park.

“Hey! Leonel!” I stopped in my tracks, looking over towards Alicia, who was walking towards me from the west side of town.

“Uh, yeah? I’m kind of in a hurry, Alicia!” I exclaimed, holding up the two ice cream cones.

“I won’t take long! I just want to tell you your fortune!” I blinked at her in confusion.

“Uhm, why?” I asked, squinting my eyes in suspicion. “What’s the catch?”

“No catch! I just want to prove something to myself. And this one will be on the house today!” Alicia exclaimed as I sighed with a nod.

“Fine, but make it quick! I'm-.” I began.

“I know, I know! You’re trying to impress Clara with your homemade ice cream.” Alicia said nonchalantly as I grumbled. She then began to make some weird chants as the leaves and flower petals started to dance around her. What the hell kind of reading was this?

“Ah! Yes, I see! I see!” Alicia exclaimed. As the leaves and flowers suddenly blew along in a normal rhythm.

“Well, Leonel, I can see you’re going to have some risky twists, and it’s not going to end well.” Alicia said as I blinked.

“Wh-what kind of risky twists? How is it not going to end well?” I asked.

“Eh, that’s the thing; I’m not sure. The new incantation I just learned will only tell me so much. Anyway, thanks again for being my test subject, Leonel! I’ll keep on practicing this method before my voyage!” She waved at me as I sighed, making my way to the park where Clara was waiting for me!

I handed my best friend her ice cream cone as she took it with a smile. She took maybe two licks before staring off into space. I could see she had a lot on her mind and that she didn’t want to talk about it. Though, I had a suspicion that it was because of Leann being the heir to the estate. I know that Clara was always comparing herself to her cousin. But I wish she didn't! Clara was as good as Leann, if not better! I handed her a wet cloth to wipe her hands. She took it and wiped her hands, but more of the sticky, cold treat melted on them. I decided to start a conversation. Maybe to lighten the mood a bit!

"Uh, Alicia told my fortune today." I said, as Clara politely replied with a 'Hm?' I blushed, looking down and continuing.

"Yeah, Alicia told my fortune. She told me I was going to have some risky twists, and it wasn't going to end well." My head snapped up when I heard Clara snickering. What was so funny about that?

"You know how she is! She'll probably rob you or something to make her fortune come true." Clara exclaimed, though this was true, I wasn’t sure about the risky twist.

"B-but, the risky twist-!" I began before Clara interrupted me.

"She's probably going to trick you." Clara said as I snickered as well.

"You're probably right, Clara." I said, rolling my eyes at myself over my stupidity of letting Alicia do that reading on me while looking up at the clouds passing above our heads. "You're probably right."

Spring 9

I groaned at the pounding rain, looking at the clock on my end table. 7:30 AM, I closed my eyes before shooting them open. Grabbing the clock to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Oh my god! I was late in helping dad with his afternoon lessons! Why didn’t anyone wake me? I struggled to get out of bed and landed on the floor with a thump as I wrestled to untangle myself from my blankets.

“Leonel?” Mom asked in worry, bursting the door of my room open.

“Mom! I’m so late! I usually help dad with his lessons, and he's probably wondering where I am!” When I was finally free from my blankets, I started heading for the door before turning back into my room.

“I-I gotta get dressed first!” I turned back on my heels, heading back to leave my room again.

“I don’t have time to get dressed! And it's not even the fun week yet!” I exclaimed anxiously as I noticed my dad standing next to mom at the doorway. A confused expression was plastered on his face.

“What the-? What has gotten you so distressed?” Dad asked as my eyes widened.

“Y-you’re still here?” I asked as he blinked at me.

“Yeah, I’m still here. I actually did my curriculum last night, so I didn’t need to go into the academy early today.”

“Your father probably should have told you that.” Mom said in slight irritation.

“He was already asleep when I finished, Dorothy!” Dad exclaimed.

“You could have told him this morning so he wouldn’t have been in a frenzy!” Mom exclaimed as I began to chuckle nervously.

“Okay, okay! That’s all behind us now. But I do need to get ready for Ms. Mana’s class.” I said as my parents looked over at me, nodding their heads. They left my room, closing the door behind them. I groaned in frustration before getting dressed for the day.

I grabbed my rainponcho from the coat hook and opened the front door of our house.

“Bye, mom! Bye, dad! Bye, grandpa!” I exclaimed.

“Be careful, sweetie!” I heard mom exclaim as I shut the door. I saw Orland up ahead in front of the inn as I sighed. I honestly didn’t like Orland. My dad seemed to really favor him and...I know that Clara has a crush on him as well. I guess my dislike for Orland was just dumb jealousy. I wanted to be like him because I wanted my dad to love me and be proud of me! And I wanted to win Clara's heart! Clara was the main reason why I haven't ended my life. I had this sliver of hope that I'll become brave enough to tell her how I feel or that she'll tell me first!

“Uh, do you need something?” Orland called out, snapping me out of my thoughts as I blushed; I didn't realize I was staring off into space at him.

“Ah, no, no. I'm, uh, j-just waiting for Clara!” I lied.

“But she doesn’t even live down this way!” Orland called out again in confusion.

“Ah, b-but she’s at Leann’s, right?” I asked. “I-I thought she said she was going to spend the night!”

“Oh, no! Clara's not at the mansion!” Leann exclaimed, walking next to Orland, an umbrella over her head. “She did come by last night, but she didn’t spend the night! You must have misunderstood her!”

“M-maybe I did.” I blushed slightly, I’m kind of glad they took that lie; or at least, Leann seemed to have taken it. They were walking closer to me.

"But do you want to walk with us, Leonel?” Leann asked.

“Yeah, Clara could be at the academy already.” Orland said with a shrug.

“Uh, you-you two don’t mind?” I asked as Leann shook her head.

“No, of course not! You’re our friend, Leonel! We care about you! Probably not as much as Clara since you two are super close, but we do care!” Leann exclaimed as I saw Orland nod his head. It made me wonder slightly if they really cared or if they pretended to care because I was best friends with Leann’s cousin and they felt obligated. I tried not to think too much about it as we walked to the academy.

I heard the sound of footsteps splashing rapidly as I looked over at Clara rushing as fast as she could towards us. She looked like she was in a frenzy, so she must have woken up late too! Orland had already fully entered the academy, but I was peeking out of the doorway; I wanted to at least say hi to her! I immediately felt my face go red as I saw the inside of her dress. I think I’d better just get to my seat and say hi to her later.

“What happened to you?” Orland asked in concern and confusion.

“Uhm...” I began, not sure how to say that I saw the inside of the dress of the girl I have a crush on. And thank god my poncho is loose and long so no one will notice anything under my belt.

“Oh! Are you sick, Leonel?” Ms. Mana asked in concern.

“Ah! N-no, no! I’m fine! I’m fine!” I exclaimed, still super flustered.

“Hm, alright then! But if you need to leave, please let me know.” Ms. Mana said as I nodded my head, taking my seat. I heard Clara and Leann enter the classroom, taking their seats. I didn't wanna look at her right now.

"Today, class," Ms. Mana began, taking a piece of chalk and jotting a few notes on the board. "We'll be learning about babies and taking care of them; this is an important role, especially for you girls." It seemed like we all groaned at the lesson, which caused Ms. Mana to clear her throat.

"Now, now, class, remember your parents had to learn how to care for you, and someday, in the future, you might become parents, so you'll need to learn ahead of time." Ms. Mana exclaimed. My mind began to wander; I started to imagine myself as an adult, married to Clara with our own child. I hoped my future would look like that! Or at least similar to that! We didn’t even have to have any children! Just being married to her would be good enough for me!

I jumped when I heard the bell ring. Ms. Mana dismissed us as I blushed. I had been daydreaming this whole time and not paying any attention to the lesson! I didn’t even have a chance to talk to Clara today as I noticed her giving Leann a scarf, her, Leann, and Orland talking about something. Now Clara's rushing home. I kind of wondered if she knew I had seen down her dress as my face turned red again.

“Leonel?” I jumped slightly at my dad’s voice.

“Ye-yeah?” I asked.

“Go see Dr. Ray and your mom at the clinic.” He ordered with a sigh.

“What? Why?” I asked.

“You were so spaced out during my lesson, and your face has been red this whole time! That isn’t like you!” Ms. Mana exclaimed as she looked over at my dad.

“I’ll walk him to the clinic since it’s on the way to the general store.” Ms. Mana said as dad nodded.

“Thanks, Mana. I would take him myself, but I do have my class to teach.”

“Think nothing of it, Barrett!” Ms. Mana exclaimed as she led me out of the academy; my face became even redder. The only fortunate thing was that the rain had stopped.

We had just entered the de Sainte-Coquille park. I inhaled deeply.

“Ah, M-Mana?” I asked.

“Yes, Leonel?” She asked, “Do you need to rest for a minute before walking more?” I became nervous, but I really needed to let her know that I was not sick, just embarrassed, and I didn’t need to go to the clinic, mainly because I didn't want mom to know the reason why I was embarrassed.

“I, uhm, I’m not s-sick...in the way that you’re thinking.” I blushed harder.

“Ah! I think I know what you’re saying!” She exclaimed, “I’m betting it has something to do with the scarf Clara was wearing, right?” I groaned in shame.

“Please don’t tell my mom! Nor my dad! Especially my mom! She’ll be so ashamed of me! I-!” Mana stopped me by placing her hand on my shoulder, turning me to look into her eyes.

“Leonel, you’re a fourteen, almost fifteen-year-old boy! Your body is changing in ways that-!” I interrupted her.

“Oh my god, please don’t give me the birds and bees talk! It was awkward enough when my dad was giving me the talk.” I squeaked as Mana began to laugh.

“All I’m saying is it’s okay for you to be embarrassed! Especially since Clara is becoming such an attractive young lady!” She said the last part in a joking manner as I blushed, groaning slightly.

“And you better tell her how you feel soon! You two would be so cute together! I’m rooting for you, Leonel!” She exclaimed, hugging me. She began to walk away, but back towards the academy.

“H-hey! Where are you going?” I asked as Mana turned her attention back towards me.

“Well, I do have to tell your father that you didn’t go to the clinic in case he asks your mom. Don’t worry, though! I’ll make something up for why you didn’t go. Now, march on home!” She commanded as I nodded, making my way back home.

I sat at my desk, working on a homework assignment for Ms. Mana’s class for the next period; the door to my bedroom burst open as mom entered, slightly panicking; dad was shaking his head in disappointment.

“So much for knocking, dear.” Dad said sarcastically as mom grabbed my face, paying no mind to my father while examining me closely.

“Are you alright, sweetie?” She asked worriedly.

“Uh...” I began, not sure what was going on.

“For crying out loud, Dorothy. Mana only said he threw up and looked better immediately after that! And if there was blood, she would have taken him to the clinic.” Dad said annoyed; that was the excuse Mana gave?

“Oh, yeah! I-I’m fine now, mom!” I exclaimed as dad sighed.

“You probably shouldn’t eat dinner as quickly. I noticed that you were horking down your food last night and that probably made you sick. Ah, speaking of, Dor-.”

“Oh my gosh!” Mom exclaimed, cutting off dad’s sentence and running out of my room. "The porkchops are burning!" I heard her exclaim in horror as dad sighed.

“I’ll teach your mother how to knock before entering your room too. Uh, I’ll call you down when dinner’s ready.” He said awkwardly before closing my door behind him. I sighed; being a teenager was definitely exhausting.

Spring 12

My vision was a little blurry as I blinked, regaining my focus, and looking around at my surroundings; I was in a long and fancy, but slightly gloomy-looking corridor with very nice paintings! I walked up to one of the paintings of an industrialized-looking castle. Where was I?

“Ah! There you are, Leonel!” I jumped slightly at the sound of a womanly voice. It was soft and melodic and unfamiliar but at the same time familiar. I turned towards the voice to see the beautiful woman with whom I looked very similar to.

“G-grandma?” I asked as she giggled.

“Who else would it be?” She asked, turning around as if she were going to lead me, “Come now, my darling grandson! We mustn’t be late!”

“Uh, late for what?” I asked as my great-grandmother looked at me with a shocked expression.

“Why, your father’s coronation, of course!” I furrowed my brows.

“Uh, d-dad’s coronation?” I asked in confusion as she giggled.

“Yes! That’s today!” She exclaimed very gently as she walked towards me, placing her hand on my shoulder as she began to lead me down the corridor.

“Someday, your offspring will have their own coronation.” She looked down in sadness. “However, I will not be there for their coronation. In fact, I will not be there for your father’s coronation.”

“Uh, b-but you’re here now, right?” I asked as she looked up at me with a gentle smile.

“I suppose so.” She stopped me in front of a door, grabbing my face and kissing my forehead.

“The future lies here. Open the door.” I inhaled deeply, pushing the door open.

The scenery beyond the balcony I was standing in was a bustling, technological-looking city with confetti. I looked towards my dad with a crown on his head. He was making a speech.

“As your new king, I will follow my wife’s and late son’s example!” Late son? I groaned.

“Dad!” I exclaimed annoyedly, "Sorry that I’m late! I’m right here, now!” However, he kept on going.

“Leonel would have made a wonderful king! If not for his death.” Death? I reached for my father.

“D-Death? Dad? Wh-what are you talking about? I’m right he-!” However, before I could finish my sentence, my hand went through my dad’s shoulder.

“Why did you leave us, Leonel?” Dad asked with tears streaking down his face. I felt terrified. I looked at my hand and noticed I was transparent. Wh-when did I pass? The castle then crumbled as my parents and the city went up, and I fell down into darkness.

Daaaaaad!!!” I yelled; my voice echoed as I gasped for air, shooting up from my bed. I started to pant, looking at my surroundings. I was back in my room! I sighed in relief; it was just a horrible dream.

My head flopped back on my pillow before I gazed over at my clock. It was getting close to time for me to get up. I knew I had dad’s class this afternoon, and as always, I felt obligated to help him out; at least I'd be able to go back home for a few hours until it was time for his class. I looked over at grandma’s chest that was sitting on my desk. I’ve been wanting to take it to Tanya to see if she knew what kind of metal it was made from. It was probably just some cheap metal! However, it seemed pretty durable, considering there wasn’t any type of dent on the box. It made me wonder!

I stuffed the chest inside of my tote, surrounding it with fleece so it wouldn’t make too much noise. I then quickly got ready to take on the day!

The noon clock chimed as dad began to scribble notes on the board.

"Today we'll be learning about defenses in attacking, and when I say we, that means you, Leonel." I blushed slightly and groaned as I overheard Orland sniffing slightly in a mocking way. So much for being my friend and caring. I just really wish I could make my dad proud of me in some way! I don’t care about the cost!

3 PM came by so quickly as dad announced that class was dismissed! I finished the last bit of my notes before packing my notebook. I looked over at Clara, who seemed to be in deep thought as I gave her shoulder a shake. She looked up at me and smiled.

"Oh, hey, Leonel!" She exclaimed. I became slightly nervous; however, I wanted to ask her to the flower festival tomorrow, and I wanted to make sure that she was okay!

"You okay, Clara?" I asked as she sighed, looking down.

"I will be. Several things have been bothering me lately, but I'm sure it's because we're at an awkward stage of our lives right now." I smiled; it seemed like she was going through the same thing I was going through...being a teenager really was troublesome!

"Oh? Well, uh, I-I hope you'll be fine by tomorrow because I wanna ask you to join me in being my-my date for the flower festival!" I exclaimed. Hopefully I’ll be able to tell her how I feel by then!

"Aw, Leo! You know I’ll always accept your invites! You're much more fun to talk to than Orland and Roy." She said as I felt my face heat up. Did that mean that she likes me?

"Aw, you-you're just saying that!" I exclaimed. I felt my face heat up as I heard Clara giggle.

"I mean it!" She exclaimed before standing up from her desk.

“I’ll see you later!” she exclaimed, running out of the academy. I smiled, rushing merrily out of the classroom and out of the school building! I made my way to the west end, turning left to head home. I stopped before I could take the next step. The chest! I almost forgot that I wanted to ask Tanya about the chest! I turned around, quickly heading towards the blacksmith.

I pushed the door of the blacksmith open as the little bell jingled. Jake looked up from his forging, acknowledging me by nodding his head.

“Welcome, Leonel. I hope you and Orland are getting along well.”

“Yeah, we’re-we’re getting along. Uh, hey, Jake? Is-is Tanya here?” I asked as Jake put his hammer down, crossing his arms.

“Hm, yes, she is. Ah, however...” he turned around as I heard Tanya and a man whose voice I didn’t recognize yelling profanities at each other behind a closed door.

“She’s a bit busy with her ex-husband. But maybe I can help you?” Jake asked. I shrugged.

“I have this family heirloom.” I began, taking the locked chest out of my tote bag. “I was just curious if you or Tanya knew what kind of metal it was made from?” Jake took the chest from my hands as his eyes widened.

“Oh. My. God!” Jake exclaimed in shock. “No, no. This can’t be right!”

“What?” I asked as Jake looked at me with wide eyes.

"Where...did you say you got this again?” Jake asked, as I blinked in confusion.

“It belonged to my great-grandmother.” I said as I saw Jake trembling.

“Can-can you, uh, wait for a moment? I-I don’t know for sure, but-but Tanya-might-know. TANYA!!!” I noticed Jake’s voice was very shaky and fast, as if he were nervous! What the hell was that chest made from?

The door to the room swung open as an angry-looking man who looked similar to Roy stepped out. Tanya was following him while yelling at him.

“And don’t you dare show your dumb assface here again, Derek!” Tanya exclaimed, slamming the shop door on the man. She turned her attention towards us and noticed the nervous look in Jake’s eyes.

“Uh, sorry you had to see that, Jake? Oh! And Leonel! I really am sorry you had to see that, Leonel! But Jake? You know I have beef with my ex-husband! Why were you looking at our fighting with such nervousness?”

“I-I wasn’t nervous about your fighting." He handed Tanya the chest. “I was nervous about this.”

Tanya’s eyes widened as she gasped in delight.

“Oh. My. God!”

“What? Oh my God, what?!?” I asked. What was my grandma’s chest made from?!?

“Jake, where did you get this?!?” Tanya asked in awe as her eyes sparkled.

“It’s actually Leonel’s.” Jake said as Tanya grabbed one of my hands; her other hand gripped the bottom of the chest as she gave me a pleading look with her eyes.

“Oh my God! Leonel, can I have this?!? This would make an amazing sword! Why, with this kind of metal, I'll be able to cut Derek into two!”

“What? No! You can’t have that!” I exclaimed, my voice slightly cracking as I cleared my throat, trying to hide the fact my voice did that.

“I just wanted to know what kind of metal it is! What is it made of that’s got you two acting like lunatics?!?”

“Rhodium!” Tanya exclaimed, “This amazing, precious metal is made of rhodium!” She began to pet the box as if it were a pedigree pet.

“S-so, what does that even mean?” I asked as Jake sighed, snatching the box from Tanya and giving it back to me, causing Tanya’s face to stream with tears.

“Rhodium is a very precious metal. No one, not even the de Sainte-Coquilles, can afford it. The only people who can afford it are..." Jake looked around nervously before he whispered something in my ear that sent shivers down my spine.

Royalty.”

Chapter 6: Flower Festival

Notes:

A very short chapter, and I have a feeling the next chapter is going to be kind of short as well!

Chapter Text

Spring 13

My eyes fluttered open as I looked at my clock. 6:15 AM. Today was the flower festival! I felt my cheeks redden as I thought of my conversation yesterday with Clara. When she told me that she’d always accept my invitations to festivals. I really hoped that was an indication that she feels the same way I do!

Maybe I should let her know how I feel today? Today’s festival is a bit romantic! It would be perfect! I just need to summon up the courage!

I grabbed a dark rose pink button-down shirt and a pair of pearl white trousers. I quickly combed my hair and placed an ascot cap of a similar color to my shirt on my head to hide my curls. I quickly slipped on my shoes and hurried out of the door towards the academy to meet up with everyone at around 6:45!

Orland, Leann, Sera, and Serena were already there waiting, dressed in pink as well. The flower festival was the very rare occasion where the guys would wear pink in some way. Leann looked over, noticing me.

“Oh! Good morning, Leonel!” She exclaimed as I rushed over towards them.

“Ah, hey! Is-is Clara here yet?” I asked as Leann shook her head.

“No, she’s not yet.” Leann answered.

“Roy and Cammy aren’t here either.” Serena said with a shrug as I looked over and blinked.

“Ah, but Roy and Cammy are usually the last ones to arrive.” I stated as Serena blushed, her eyes widened slightly. Sera grabbed her sister's hand.

“You do have a point, Leonel.” Sera said before looking over. She elbowed her sister, causing Serena to turn towards the path that led to the farmhouse. I noticed Serena’s face becoming pink as I looked over at Clara.

I couldn’t understand why Serena was blushing. Clara’s outfit looked nice, and it wasn’t like the dress she wore the other day. I felt my cheeks flush as I remembered being able to see down her dress. I'm lucky the shirt I have on is pretty long to hide the impurity that would be visible under my belt.

“Good morning, Clara!” Leann chirped.

“Morning!” Clara exclaimed, embracing her cousin. Leann giggled.

“You seem excited this morning, Clara.” Leann said as Clara nodded her head.

“You know I love festivals!” Clara exclaimed. She looked towards me, grabbed my hand, and led me towards the cherry tree. I noticed Serena’s face held a look of sorrow as her sister grabbed her hand, giving her a small, comforting smile.

"Wow, you're overly excited, Clara." I began, glancing back over at the twins for a split second before turning my attention back towards my best friend.

“Are you still bothered from yesterday?” I asked in concern as Clara shook her head.

"Oh! No! I mean, I am, but it’s not as bad today as it was yesterday!" she replied, as I nodded.

"Oh, okay! Well, if you ever need an ear, I’ll lend you one!" I exclaimed as she looked over at me with a smile.

Tell her! You’ll feel better if you tell her!

I inhaled deeply.

"Ah, h-hey?” I began; this was it! I just have to say, Clara, I love you! I inhaled again.

“W-what's it like being fifteen?" I asked. Stupid! That wasn’t telling her how you feel!

"What's it like? It doesn't feel much different from being fourteen." She replied, lightly shrugging her shoulders. I blushed; I had to think of something!

"Really?" I asked as she nodded. Gotta think of something else!

"I just wanted to know because you’re different now." I replied. Could I use this to my advantage?

"Is different okay?" she asked. My cheeks flushed. Yes! Maybe I could use this! I nodded.

"Different is great." I said. Why am I procrastinating? Dad told me I should tell her before it’s too late!

But...what if she doesn’t like you back? The voice in my head began, You’ll never be able to show your face around Alvarna! You’ll have to change your name! Move away! You’ll never be able to see Clara again!

"Hey, Leonel?" Clara began as I looked over at her with a 'Hm?' Maybe she’ll say that she likes me?

"Your birthday is coming up! Is there anything special that you want for your birthday?" She asked as I blushed.

I want you to be my girlfriend! That would be the best birthday present ever!

"I dunno." I replied. Ugh! Yes, you do!

"You mean you really don't know?" Clara asked. Was she on to me?

"Nope. I guess just a simple surprise. You-you can surprise me if you want!" I exclaimed.

"I'll do just that." she said with a giggle, looking back up again at the raining cherry blossom petals. I started to silently pray that she'd return my feelings in some way on my birthday.

Summer 2

I took a bite of my sandwich, scribbling some things for tomorrow’s assignment. The sound of someone knocking on the front door was heard as mom stopped her sweeping to answer it. I took another bite from my sandwich.

“Oh! Hello, Clara!” Mom exclaimed as I started to choke on my sandwich in surprise. My coughing echoed through the house.

“Leonel?” Mom called in worry as my coughing died down.

“I-I’m fine, mom!” I exclaimed, taking a quick drink of a brown, caramel-flavored, fizzy concoction that Clara had gifted me a few days back. I think it was called a soda? It wasn't bad, but I wasn't too fond of the flavor. Still, I appreciated the gift. Apparently this was a new drink that was super popular in bigger cities that her family got ahold of. I remembered mom almost having a heart attack until dad reassured her that Max told him that there was no alcohol. Overall, it wasn't bad, but it was strange. I enjoyed it in a strange way; the bubbles from the drink tickled my mouth in a sensational way.

“Should I come back later?” Clara asked as I rushed towards the entrance. Stumbling on my way over.

“No!” I exclaimed, my voice cracking slightly; mom and Clara looked at me in shock as I blushed.

“I-I mean, no. I, uhm, w-would like the visit.” I blushed deeper, ashamed that my voice cracked like that.

“Uh, are you sure? It seems like you’re eating now.” Clara said as my eyes widened.

“Ah, I-I mean I was, but I’m done now!” I lied. I just didn’t want her to leave.

“Oh, well, if you’re sure! I just wanted to talk to you about tomorrow!”

“Ah, tomorrow?” I asked as Clara nodded.

“Yeah! It’s your birthday! Remember?” She exclaimed as I blushed.

“Ah, r-right! S-so, why did you want to talk with me about my birthday?” I asked, with a bit of hope in my voice.

“Well, I talked with your mom and dad about having a swimming party at the entrance of Blessia Island.” Clara began.

“And Clara convinced us to let you kids grow up!” Mom exclaimed as I blinked in confusion.

“Uh, meaning?” I asked.

“You kids are going to Blessia on your own. The monsters never venture to the entrance, so we don’t see why you can’t have your birthday there.” Mom explained.

“And plus, it gives us a taste of freedom and growing up.” Clara said, a blush going up her face.

“Oh?” I began in surprise, “That actually does sound really nice.”

“However, if you’re not comfortable, we can think of-…” Clara began in a slightly quick pace before I interrupted her.

“Ah! No, no! I like that idea! I have no opposition! L-let’s have my party there!” I exclaimed as I noticed Clara’s face flush a deeper red.

“O-okay.” Clara said in slight embarrassment. Why was she embarrassed? She said swimming party, so maybe she wasn’t comfortable in her swimsuit? I blushed as I imagined Clara in a swimsuit.

“I-I have to go and get ready for my grandmother’s birthday memorial. I-I’ll see you t-tomorrow at school. We’ll leave for Blessia around 3:30.” Clara said, her face flushing more as she left the house.

“Oh, a-alright!” I exclaimed.

“Tell your grandmother that I wish her a happy heavenly birthday.” Mom said as Clara nodded. She gave us a wave and left the house.

“Are you okay, sweetie?” Mom asked as my eyes glanced over to the side at her.

“Uh, yeah? Why?” I answered as mom leaned towards me with a smirk on her face.

“You two would be cute together.” Mom said as my face flushed more.

“Oh my god! Mom!” I squeaked in embarrassment.

“What? I think almost everyone knows about your crush on Clara.” Mom admitted.

“B-but it’s so hard to tell her.” I said, sighing.

“I know. I blame myself for that.” She admitted.

“Yourself? Why?” I asked.

“Believe it or not, I was very shy and often spoke through Fern. I had difficulty talking to boys. That is, until your dad asked me out on a date! After that, my stuttering slowed down, and I gained more confidence.” She admitted as my eyes widened.

“You and dad really do love each other! Despite you two being complete opposites!” I admitted.

“You know what they say? Opposites attract!” Mom exclaimed as I blushed slightly.

“Yeah. Yeah, you’re right!” I exclaimed. Opposites attract! That gave me so much hope! I just need to not get so nervous to be able to tell Clara how I feel about her.

Summer 3

I looked at the ship sailing behind us as we made our way to Blessia. We probably didn’t need two ships. All of us could fit onto one; however, Clara suggested a second ship, just in case someone wanted or needed to leave early.

I looked at the ship again, but no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn’t see Clara steering the boat behind us.

“Leo-loo?” I jerked slightly from surprise, turning my attention to my aunt, Cammy.

“Uh, I haven’t heard that nickname for a while.” I said, slightly blushing as she giggled.

“I’m just making sure you don’t fall overboard. You’re leaning off the railing with such a distant expression that it’s kinda worrisome.” She admitted before giving me a sly smile.

“You know, you won’t be able to see Clara from that angle, right?” She said as my face turned redder.

“W-who said I was wanting to look at Clara? Why w-would I want to look at Clara?” I asked nervously as my aunt rolled her eyes.

“Cut the crap, Leo. I think everyone, except Clara herself, knows you like her! I could see it from the beginning!”

“B-but you’re three years older than us! H-how could you see it from the beginning?” I asked nervously, hoping to stun her.

“Okay, first off, I’m three and four-fifths older than you and four years older than the younger four; secondly, because I’m that much older, I remember that tantrum you threw when you were a toddler because Rosalind didn’t come by with Clara. I was almost seven.” She said, her hands on her hips confidently as I grumbled.

“And if you don’t let her know soon, I’ll tell her myself!” Cammy exclaimed as I narrowed my eyes at her.

“Well, I know about your crush on Roy. S-so if you tell Clara, I’ll tell Roy.” I said, with some confidence as she blinked.

“Uh, you don’t even have the guts to embarrass other people.” She replied as I sighed. I hated that she was right. I grumbled again.

“Maybe you can tell her today? That would be a great birthday present for you!” She exclaimed.

“Well, you just said that I don’t have the guts to embarrass other people, and that includes myself.” I admitted with a sigh.

“I think you just need a little push.” Cammy said, giving me a wink. “Give me a few days and I’ll come up with a plan.”

“Don’t waste your time.” I said with a defeated sigh.

“Aw, c’mon, Leo-loo! You two would be so cute together!” Cammy exclaimed.

“Are we talking about Leonel’s crush on Clara?” I winced at the voice behind me as I turned my head to see Orland. I was hoping he didn’t hear Cammy’s nickname for me.

“Yep! Don’t you agree that they would be cute?” Cammy exclaimed as I blushed deeper.

“Considering those two have been close since I can remember, they would make a nice couple.” Orland said as my face became a deep red, feeling as though he was mocking me that I wouldn’t be able to tell her.

“Why are you here? Who’s driving the ship?” I asked in a slightly nasty tone.

“I’m just taking a break, so I let Roy take over. He also asked me to grab him a soda. He's never had one before.” Orland admitted as I felt my face go white.

“Roy’s driving the...by himself?!?” I asked in a panic.

“Uh, Roy is actually a really good sailor. And is a lot more knowledgeable about it than I am.” Orland said as Cammy nodded.

“He really is! He learned a lot about sailing from his dad’s rare visits!” Cammy exclaimed.

“Like father, like son, I suppose.” Orland replied with a shrug as I sighed; the saying didn’t ring true for me, and I wish it did.

If I were like my dad, I’d probably be more respected, more assertive, more masculine, and most importantly, more loved.

I’d have more confidence to let Clara know how I feel about her! My classmates would respect me truly! I’d be able to fight if attacked! But the thing that would mean the most to me though would be that my dad would love and be proud of me!

I’d honestly be better off dead. My dad will never be proud of me. My life isn’t valuable. I have no idea why I’m hanging on.

But I still have this sliver of hope that Clara will like me back and make the first move. I didn’t want to imagine someone else sweeping her off of her feet. I didn’t want to imagine my heart breaking.

Maybe it would be for the best. I just need a sign! A sign to tell me to hold on, or a sign to tell me to give up.

“Anyway, I’m going to save myself from the silence by grabbing that soda for Roy from that room over there. I'll, uh, talk to you later, Leo-loo. Happy birthday.” Orland said as my eye twitched in annoyance. Apparently, he did hear my aunt call me that nickname.

The ships docked on the island as everyone got off the boats. Sera and Serena hurriedly rushed towards a tree as Clara’s voice boomed out.

“Can someone help me carry the record player out? And this cooler of refreshments?” As I rushed towards her ship, she noticed me and stopped me in a very stern voice.

Not you, Leonel Prescott! Rule number three of the de Sainte-Coquille birthday rules states that any person who is celebrating their birthday is forbidden to do any type of strenuous work at their event, unless that work involves celebratory physical activity such as, but not limited to, dancing, tennis, volleyball, swimming, and yoga. They are only granted permission at the end of the event when the guests leave.” Clara said as I blinked in confusion.

“Uh, wait, what? Is-is that even a thing?” I asked.

“It actually is.” Leann said as Orland and Cammy rushed past us.

“We’ll help you out, Clara!” Orland exclaimed as he and Cammy boarded the ship. I sighed, looking back over at Sera and Serena.

“What’s up with them?” I asked as Leann shrugged.

“I’m not sure. You can ask them, though! You’re not forbidden from mingling with your guests.” Leann said in a slightly joking manner as she went on the ship to help out. I walked over towards the tree they were huddled at.

“H-hey, are you two o-?” Before I could get the rest of my sentence out, one of them made the grossest hurling noise, causing my eyes to widen.

“Well, that-that answered my-my question.” I said my cheeks tinged a pink color. “Do you two need anything?”

“Ah, actually, it’s just Sera.” Serena said as Sera became flustered.

“Serena!” She exclaimed, embarrassed, before hurling again.

“Uh, a-are you…gonna be okay, Sera?” I asked as she nodded.

“I just get motion sickness very easily.” She replied.

“It’s why grandma Luli and grandpa Aoto, not to mention our uncles, visit us from Azuma now in winter instead of us going there.” Serena said, rubbing her sister’s back

“Oh. I was actually wondering why they came by instead of you guys visiting them. I mean, I remember you visiting them one year when we were younger. I think you missed school for about a week or two and had to make a report?” I said.

“We visited before that as well, before we started school. And considering the Azuma is really far, it’s a bit more difficult for Sera than just from town to Blessia.” Serena replied as Sera looked over at me slightly.

“I’ll be okay, though. I just need a minute. Maybe you can ask Clara to bring me some lemonade?” Sera asked as I nodded.

“Uh, s-sure. I’ll go ask her!” I exclaimed, rushing over toward Clara; I felt my heart pumping.

Tell her how you feel too.

I inhaled deeply as I stopped behind Clara.

“Uh, he-hey, Clara?” I asked as she turned her attention towards me from setting up a table.

“Uh, t-two things…firstly, S-Sera got motion sickness and has asked you to bring her some l-lemonade.” I said as Clara nodded.

“And the second thing?” She asked as my face became red.

I love you, Clara! The best birthday present ever would be for you to be my girlfriend!

“I-I think you should take care of Sera first.” I said with a sigh as Clara nodded her head, rushing towards the cooler to pull out a jar of lemonade to give to Sera.

“So, you’re not going to coward out of the second thing, are you?” Cammy asked slyly as I blushed.

“Sh-shut up, Cammy!” I exclaimed through gritted teeth.

“Oh! Does the second thing have anything to do with your crush on my cousin?” Leann asked as I groaned.

“How does everyone know?” I asked in embarrassment.

“I mean, it’s pretty obvious that you like her.” Orland said nonchalantly with a shrug as I sighed, before slightly wondering if the reason Clara didn’t know about my feelings was because we were like Leann and Orland in a way.

Those two like each other! It’s super obvious! However, they’re not in a relationship, which made me curious; what if they didn’t know about their feelings for one another? Even if it was apparent to everyone else?

“I personally think you two would make a great couple.” Roy said with a smile as my cheeks flushed. I felt my heart racing.

“So, what was the second thing?” I jumped slightly at the sound of Clara’s voice behind me. I felt everyone’s eyes fixated on me as I gave her my attention.

“Ah, a-are we about ready to start the party?” I asked as Clara looked curiously behind me.

“Why is everyone shaking their heads like that?” She asked as I blushed.

“Ah! Because we haven’t even set out the cake yet!” Cammy exclaimed.

“Nor have we set up the presents’ table.” Roy said.

“And, uh, I think I left the records on the ship. So, no, we’re not ready to start the party yet.” Orland said as I furrowed my brows. Why was Orland suddenly being so caring? I was expecting him to announce my feelings and humiliate me! So, why didn’t he?

“Come on, Clara. You’ve done enough for today! I think you need to relax a bit on the pier.” Leann said, leading Clara towards the pier as I felt my heart pound out of my chest. I really hope Leann doesn’t tell Clara instead.

Some fast, bebop jazz-type music echoed from the record player as I felt my head bob a bit.

“Uh, this is yours, Orland?” I heard Cammy ask in shock as my eyes widened as well. Surely this was his grandpa Egan's, and Orland was only borrowing it.

“Yeah? Why are you so surprised?” Orland asked as I felt my head snap towards him, wondering if I misheard the conversation.

“Ah, you just don’t seem the type to listen to this kind of music.” Roy said nervously.

“What did you think I listened to?” Orland asked as I noticed Roy and Cammy’s faces became flushed.

“Baroque.” Cammy said in shame.

"And just classical-type music in general." Roy said with embarrassment.

“Uh, I do listen to that too! But if I had to pick my favorite genre, I'd have to say reggae.” Orland said as my mind felt like it had exploded with this new information I just learned!

Reggae? There was no way Orland’s favorite genre of music was reggae!

I looked back over at Clara whispering something in Leann’s ear. She jerked her ear away from Clara’s mouth; her face was flushed, and it seemed like she was scolding her cousin. It made me curious as to what Clara said as she defensively raised her hands.

The time passed by as Clara still sat in the same spot. I was starting to get worried; she seemed a little off yesterday too when she was telling me about my party.

Plus, I never got her present to me either. It didn’t matter if she didn’t get me anything; I never wanted anything from her to begin with.

Except for her to return my feelings.

Sera was congratulating her sister on winning a swimming race that happened a moment ago before a slow, romantic-sounding melody came into play. I inhaled deeply, making my way towards Clara. I offered her my hand as she looked up at it and towards my face.

“C-can I have this dance?” I asked. She giggled, taking my offering.

“You’re the birthday boy.” She said as I felt my face flush. So if it weren’t my birthday, would she still accept my offer?

I decided not to dwell on it too much; she did say that she’ll always accept my invitations to festivals! Right?

I led her on the sand, placing my hands on her waist, and leading her into the dance. I wanted to tell her.

“You know, Clara…” I began as I felt Clara’s eyes on me.

You know that I’m in love with you, right?

“I haven’t gotten my present from you.” I said with a chuckle.

Now, tell her what you really want for your present!

“I’m not giving it to you yet.” She said with a wink as I blushed. She winked! Why did she wink?

“Is it…embarrassing?” I asked. Clara pondered for a second before blushing.

“A bit.” She said as I felt my face become redder. Was she going to return my feelings without me having to say anything?

"It's not some sort of male enhancement gag gift, is it?" I asked in a slightly angry tone, hoping to push something out of her as she laughed.

"No, no Leonel! I'm not that mean!” She replied as I sighed a bit in relief.

“Is it something exotic your mom forced you to buy?” I asked, hoping for a small hint.

“Nope.” She said as I pondered a bit more. I eventually flared my hands in the air in defeat.

“I give up.” I said as she laughed.

“It’ll be after the party.” She said as I pursed my lips, silently praying it was what I was hoping for.

Everyone had boarded the second ship and left at around 9 PM. Clara offered to stay with me to clean up as we packed up the few leftover tables and my presents from the others. I looked around the bushes for any other trash and an unopened box.

"Okay, Clara. What and where is my present? I've looked everywhere for an unopened box, and all I could find were the already opened presents from everyone else! How well do you have it hidden?" I asked as Clara gave a nervous-sounding giggle.

"You won't find it here; come on." She took my hand, leading me into the entrance.

"Whoa! Wait a minute, Clara! I am not fighting any monsters!" I exclaimed. She laughed.

"Don't worry, it's on the abandoned ship, so it's nowhere near any monsters!" She reassured me as I sighed in relief, mumbling a ‘good’ under my breath. I really hope that she didn’t hear me say that.

She pulled me as quickly as possible to the abandoned ship. I looked out into the horizon at the beautiful scenery. The moonlight’s reflection on the dark water gave it a certain beauty that I couldn’t describe.

"Clara! The view is so nice! Thank you! This is the best gift ever!" I exclaimed.

Not the best gift ever; an even better gift would be you returning my feelings for me.

"This, uh, isn't your gift, Leonel, though I will admit the scenic view of moonlight's reflection on the dark water is very nice." She said as I looked over towards her. A bit of hope in my heart.

"If...if this isn't my gift...then what is it?" I asked as I noticed her cheeks becoming red.

"Uhm…close your eyes." She ordered, her face becoming more red. I furrowed my eyebrows, hesitating. Why do I have to close my eyes for her to tell me? But…what if she wasn’t going to tell me? I felt my heart race nervously as I slowly closed my eyes.

I felt her arms wrap around my neck as something wet and sweet hit my lips. I opened my eyes, hoping for what I thought.

Clara was kissing me!

This is the best day ever! She likes me back!

I grabbed her face, returning her kiss. Letting her know that I returned her feelings. I then felt my trunks slide down as I broke our kiss; did she do that to tease me? I glanced behind her, expecting to hear giggling and expecting to see our friends laughing at me. Nothing. Why did she slide my trunks down?

I felt her lean into me as my face burned. I felt more flesh than fabric. Did she take her top off?

“Do me.” She whispered. My heart pounded in nervousness and longing.

It seemed a little fast. But we've known each other since we were babies! I trusted her, and it appeared that she trusted me too.

"Ah, o-okay." I replied.

My hips trusted as I noticed Clara's face held slight discomfort. I held her close, planting my lips onto hers. I wanted her to know that…

“I love you.” I whispered; this was the best birthday ever! The best day ever!

We eventually finished our lovemaking. I cupped her face, planting my lips onto hers several times, looking into her eyes.

“This was the best present.” I whispered. My eyes widened when I noticed that she seemed a bit dazed. Did I hurt her?

“Uh, y-you okay, Clara?” I asked as she snapped out of her trance, nodding her head.

“I-I'm just tired. And, uh, w-we have school in the morning. We better get home.” She said with flushed cheeks, pulling herself from underneath me, grabbing her swimsuit, quickly slipping it onto her body. I nodded.

“Yeah, we better not stay out any later.” I said with a chuckle, grabbing my trunks nearby.

The ship ride to town was silent, as well as the walk to the farmhouse. I knocked on the door as Rosalind opened it.

“There you are, Clara!” Rosalind exclaimed with such relief.

“Y-yeah, s-sorry about that, Mrs. de Sainte-Coquille!” I began, my face flushing slightly.

“It-it took a bit longer to clean up than we had thought.” I continued, trying to come up with more.

“There was a lot of hidden trash.” Clara said, slightly giggling.

“Cammy told us you had stayed behind to help clean.” Rosalind said as Jack appeared behind her.

“As long as you two made it back safely, all is well!” Jack exclaimed as I smiled.

“Now, off to bed, Clara! You have school in the morning!” Rosalind exclaimed as Clara nodded, entering her house.

“You better go home too, Leonel. I’m sure your parents are worried.” Rosalind said as I nodded.

“Ah, yeah. I'll, uh, see you tomorrow?” I asked as Clara nodded.

“Yeah.” She replied as the front door of the farmhouse swung shut.

I opened the door of my house, taking a step in. My mom grabbed my face, examining me.

“Good grief, Dorothy! He hasn’t even fully entered yet!” Dad exclaimed.

“But what if he was hurt?” Mom asked worriedly as dad sighed.

“Can he at least come in? And maybe let him explain why he’s so late? Instead of you assuming the worst?” Dad asked as mom sighed.

“You’re right, you’re right.” She said, backing away from me as I blinked. Clara always complained about her mom overworrying! But there was no way Rosalind was this bad!

“Well?” Dad asked as I blushed, slightly forgetting that I had to explain why I was so late.

“I cleaned up with Clara.” I said.

“Yeah, we know that part. Cammy told us.” Dad said.

“Uh, that-that’s it. There was a lot more trash than we thought. And w-well, when we thought we had gotten it all, there was always something else hidden.” I said, hoping they took the lie.

“Well, did you have fun?” Dad asked as I smiled.

“I did! I really did enjoy myself today! I also learned that Orland's favorite genre of music is reggae!” I exclaimed as dad's eyes widened.

"Wait, really?" He asked as I nodded.

"Huh. I was not expecting that." He replied.

"I don't think anyone was." I said as he stared into space, trying to process what he just heard. He shrugged it off before turning his attention back towards me.

“So, how did it feel?” Dad asked as my face turned red, my heart pounding. Were they suspicious?

“What? W-what do you mean, how did it feel?” I asked as dad gave me a look of confusion.

“Uh, you know? Feeling like an adult? No supervision?” Dad said as I gave a small relief prayer in my head.

“O-oh! It was nice! It felt nice to be an adult.” I exclaimed.

“I bet it was nice to not have your mother breathe down your neck.” Dad joked before he became nervous. Though you couldn’t see it, you could sense mom’s glare.

“Only joking, dear.” He said in defense as mom turned her attention back towards me.

“So, what did you get?” Mom asked as I furrowed my brows.

“What did I get, what?” I asked.

“You know? Presents! What did you get? Will you show us?” Mom asked as my face flushed.

“Gah! I-I left them on the ship! I was so focused on making sure Clara got home safely that I completely forgot about them!” I exclaimed.

“You can get them and show us tomorrow. It’s getting late, and you have school in the morning!” Dad said with a smile.

“Good night, sweetie.” Mom said as I made my way upstairs, into my room. Dressing in my pajamas, I climbed into bed. Closing my eyes with a smile. Today was a sure sign that I should keep going and not give up!

Summer 4

My eyes fluttered open as I hugged my pillow tighter, imagining it to be Clara. I felt my face heat up as I revisited every every curve and dimple that I saw on her body last night in my memory.

I looked up at the clock on my nightstand. 6:45 AM. I could relax for fifteen more minutes, but I didn’t see the point in that; I better just get up, get ready to help dad with his lessons, and get it over with. At least I’d be able to relax at home after until his class this afternoon.

“Bye, mom. Bye, grandpa.” I said while dad and I walked out the door.

“Take care! I’ll see you again at nine, Leonel.” Mom said as I gave her a thumbs up. The walk was silent for a second.

“Well, you still seem to be in good spirits.” Dad said as I felt my face burn.

“The party must have been nice. I can’t blame you either; I didn’t like my dad breathing down my neck either when I was younger.” Dad finished as I looked towards him with wide eyes.

“Wait, really? Grandpa?” I asked as he nodded.

“He was very over protective of me. I can’t say I blame him either. Considering my mom left us when I was really young, he had to raise me pretty much on his own. He had help and whatnot, but I think he was afraid that I would leave him. I was rebellious and what not, so I’m sure I caused him a lot of headache. But it was the fact I wasn’t allowed to be free that caused me to rebel.” Dad chuckled a bit.

“Be lucky I fell for your mother at first sight, or else you wouldn’t be here and I probably wouldn’t be in Alvarna either.” It was silent for another moment.

“Uh, d-do you remember your mom?” I asked.

“Hm, not really. I know what she looks like due to portraits. She had pink hair and lemon yellow eyes; unfortunately, we no longer have those portraits.” Dad explained.

“Th-the fire?” I asked as dad looked down in despair.

“Yeah.” He answered as I blushed in shame. My dad’s lost a lot; he went through a lot, it seems; the worst part is that he has me for a son. At least Clara returned my feelings last night. That was one thing in my life that was going for me.

Dad was scribbling notes on the board on the woodworking topic from last time. I looked over at Clara, who was flipping her notebook. My heart pounded in my chest. I was so drawn by her, I wonder if she wanted to be a public couple yet? I’ll have to ask later.

I noticed that she was looking at me in confusion as I felt my face burn before turning back to my notes. She’s right, I can’t be spacing out during dad’s lecture!

The bell rang as I jotted down the last bit of my notes. Clara was rushing out the door as I was buttoning my tote. What was her hurry? Before I could rush out after her, dad stopped me.

“Wait here, I wanna talk to you.” He said sternly before rushing out of the academy. I peeked through the door and out the window. Dad came back from the farmhouse path as I blushed. What did he say to Clara? I noticed he had a smile on his face as well.

I quickly rushed towards his desk, pretending to be waiting for him as he entered the classroom again.

“W-what happened? I-I mean, w-why did you leave?” I asked, blushing slightly.

“Hm? Oh, I was just thanking Clara for throwing that party. But that’s not why we’re here.” Dad said sternly as I felt myself become pale. Was dad suspicious? Did Clara say something?

“I need you to tell Clara how you feel. And when you do, I don’t want you getting distracted staring at her like you did today.” He said as my face reddened.

“Ah, y-you saw?” I asked nervously.

“Who didn’t see?” Dad asked sarcastically. “The point is, focus on school right now. You two can be in a relationship, but I don’t want that to be your main focus. Are we clear?” Dad asked as I nodded.

“C-crystal.” I said as dad nodded. If only he knew about our relationship. Whenever I can, I'll ask Clara if she wants to go public yet.

“Now, go tell...eh, actually we should just go home. Clara seemed to be in a hurry to get home. She probably wants to get some woodworking practice in. Uh, we can probably do some practicing too, if you want?” Dad asked as I shrugged.

“Uh, sure.” I replied as he smiled slightly.

“We can practice this weekend then.” He said, placing his hand on my shoulder, leading me home. I felt my lips curl, things were definitely looking up for me; I couldn’t wait to see how my future would play out.

Sorry for your feels.

Chapter 10: It's Not A Big Deal!

Chapter Text

Summer 11

“I’ll see you later, mom.” I said with a small, nonchalant sigh. Mom looked up from her novel with a small smile on her face.

“Be careful, sweetie.” She replied as I closed the door, sighing in disappointment. Clara had been avoiding me for the past several days. Which now made me wonder if maybe she doesn’t feel the same anymore. But I’ve also noticed that she’s been looking very pale lately as well.

I saw her sitting on the bench in front of the academy. She looked horrible! Even worse than she’s looked for the past few days! I took a seat next to her; her eyes glanced over at me with pink cheeks.

“Y-you look kinda pale, Clara. Are you okay?” I asked, as she nodded. I wasn’t sure if I should believe her or not. She looked awful. Had she been avoiding me because she was sick?

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She replied while shaking. “I think I’m just-…”

“Clara!” We both looked up at Leann rushing towards us in a worried frenzy, Orland trailing close behind her, looking as if he had seen the most terrifying thing.

“You look awful, Clara! I could see it from afar! Are you feeling alright?” She asked, placing her hand on Clara's forehead before looking over at Orland.

“See? Even Orland’s concerned about you too.” Leann said as Orland’s face turned a slight pink color.

“Uh…ah, bap, buh…” Orland began, unable to get any words out. He didn’t even look nor sound worried!

“Eh, it looks and sounds more like he’s seen a ghost.” I said as Orland blushed more, his horror-stricken expression deepened and he started shaking as if he did see a ghost. I noticed his eyes were fixated on me as well. I began to wonder what the hell I did to make him so frightened!

“He can get that way when he’s worried. Or he’ll do some kind of panicky dance and then start running around in a circle. It really depends.” Leann said as I felt my eyes widen. Orland did not seem the type to worry nor do any type of weird gestures for his concern.

“Anyway, do you need one of us to walk you home, Clara?” Leann asked as I felt my face redden. I’d be more than happy to walk her home. Maybe I could ask if she wanted to become public! However, before I could open my mouth, Clara shook her head.

“No, I’m fine! I’m just nervous about the project we have to do today.” She stated as I felt my heart sink. I knew why she was nervous. Even though there wasn’t a grade, Clara was always comparing herself to her cousin. But she’s just as great as Leann! If not more!

“Ah…” Orland said, or tried saying, still horror-stricken as Leann smiled at her cousin.

“You do know that it’s not a huge grade, right?” She asked. Clara sighed.

“Yeah, I know. I guess I just want to do well.” She looked down. I wanted to comfort her. I want her to know that I do love her and that she’ll do well! I wrapped my arms around Clara in an embrace.

“You’ll do great!” I exclaimed; I really wanted to kiss her, however, with Orland and Leann nearby...probably not a good idea.

“And it’s all about practice for this workshop!” Leann exclaimed.

“Uh-huh.” Orland finished off as Leann turned her attention towards him, her brows furrowed in confusion.

“Orly? I think Clara’s okay now. You don’t have to be so worried.” Leann said as Orland's eyes widened. He looked at her in panic and embarrassment. Did Leann just call Orland Orly? This was great! That should serve as payback for the Leo-loo incident!

“Orly?” I asked, slightly snickering as Orland crossed his arms, turning his face to the right, above his shoulders.

“Leo-loo.” Orland retorted back as my face brightened a red color. I probably shouldn’t have said that, knowing that Orland usually has the upper hand. Though it shouldn’t matter, considering Clara’s heard that nickname before.

“Leo-loo? That’s adorable!” Leann exclaimed in delight.

“Where did you hear that?” Clara asked in confusion as Orland made a scoffing sound from his mouth.

“He overheard it from Cammy on the ship ride to my birthday.” I admitted in defeat, sighing deeply.

“Wow. I haven’t heard Cammy call you that in ages.” Clara said, causing my face to flush deeper.

The reason Cammy stopped calling me that was because I threw a tantrum; I wanted to be more grown up and Leo-loo sounded very babyish. I was about four or five at the time. Very young kids can be a handful. However, I felt as though I was an even bigger handful. I noticed that I was a lot different from my peers. I felt as though I was immature, and I tend to say things that didn't make sense to the conversations I'm in. I never really had any friends, except Clara; and although Roy and I used to be good friends because we both enjoyed collecting pins, he took on a new hobby, leaving me back in the dark. At least Clara has always been there for me.

The school bell rang as Roy, Cammy, and the twins hurried out of the building. I stood up from the bench, offering Clara my hands. She took them, allowing me to help her from her seat. I noticed that her hands were a bit swollen. However, before I could say anything, she was already walking ahead with Orland and Leann.

I caught up with them as the four of us ventured into the classroom where Ms. Mana was gathering up her supplies to take home. Dad walked into the classroom with his tote in his hands as the two teachers said their goodbyes to each other while passing by.

Dad led us into the workshop room from the classroom as I saw Clara shaking out of the corner of my eye. I squeezed her hand, giving her a reassuring smile as Clara smiled back.

You’re perfect, just the way you are!

There were four tables with a small log and tools on each table. Clara went to the table closest on the right as I took the table next to her. Leann and Orland went to the two tables in front of us.

“Remember, this project isn’t a grade. You’re just getting participation points and practice! You can make whatever you want; be it a stool, birdhouse, jewelry box, or even just a wood carving statue.” Dad announced to us as a reminder.

I studied my log for a moment; a birdhouse seemed simple enough! And considering I wasn’t super artistic, I should definitely do something easy.

I split the log in half and started to chisel away the bark. I noticed Clara was looking very pale while she was sanding.

Her sandpaper dropped to the floor as she rushed past me with her hands over her mouth. She stumbled towards the nearest trash can in a hurry, making an alarming hurling noise. She didn’t need to be this nervous!

I hurriedly rushed to her side, placing my hands on her shoulders.

“It-it’s not that big of a deal, Clara!” I exclaimed. Clara looked at me with such hurt and fury that I felt scared. I probably shouldn’t have said that; she goes through a lot comparing herself and her worth to Leann.

“Not that big of a deal?” She snapped as I was taken aback. I wasn’t sure what to do nor say to save this. However, Clara has never snapped like that! That’s what I couldn’t understand. Had she been keeping her feelings bottled up for so long that she couldn’t handle it anymore?

“It’s a huge deal for me! I hate being compared to-!” Clara stopped when she noticed that everyone was looking at us.

“What is the meaning of this?” Dad demanded as Clara started crying. Why was she crying? Were her feelings really this bottled up? I noticed that dad was looking at Clara with shock as well. Before he could say anything to her, Orland and Leann were already close by. Orland started shaking again.

“Eeg, gah, goff, bah.” Orland began while shivering. Dad looked over at him with a blank look of concern.

“Uh, are you having a stroke?” Dad asked Orland in worry as Leann sighed loudly.

“No, he’s just panicking. However, I know Clara is nervous about this project.” She said as dad furrowed his brows, turning his attention towards Clara.

“Uh, but I’m not even going to judge nor grade this project.” Dad said before looking back towards Orland in worry.

“And are you sure Orland doesn’t need to go to the clinic?” He asked as we all looked at him holding the reddest face, with his horror-stricken look.

“Oh! M-maybe he should! I’ve never seen him this red while panicking!” Leann exclaimed in worry as dad sighed.

“I guess class is dismissed early today, then. We’ll try again on Monday.” Dad announced while lifting Orland up, carrying him out of the workshop, Leann trailing closely next to him. They left the academy as I overheard Clara starting to sniffle.

“I’m sorry…” She said quietly, shaking from her sobs. My eyes widened. She shouldn’t apologize! That was my fault!

“Ah! No! No, it-it’s okay. I know how you feel. I probably shouldn’t have said anything like that. I know you’re always comparing yourself to Leann, but…you shouldn’t!” I exclaimed, feeling my face heat up.

“Y-you’re just as special as Leann, if not more! E-especially to me.” I said softly. I wanted her to know that I’m here for her. That I love her! She sighed, looking over at me with a small smile.

“Thanks, Leo.” She said, wrapping her arms around me in an embrace. I embraced her back; she really needs this. I think she could use someone to just be there for her! We broke our embrace as I felt my face heat up slightly.

“S-so…” I began, feeling a little nervous about my next question. Since I had pissed Clara off, there was a fifty/fifty chance that she'd want to hang out with me today, but I should probably get it over with and ask.

“Since class was dismissed early...do you wanna...y-you know? Hang out?” I asked. Clara’s beautiful face lit up with a smile as she gave her head a nod. I felt a wave of relief. At least the girl I love wasn't that angry at me.

“Yeah! We haven’t done that in a while! Where do you wanna hang out at? The park? The pier next to the blacksmith’s? Somewhere else?” She asked as I gave a small chuckle. I’m glad that I can be here for her!

“The park sounds nice!” I exclaimed as we left the academy hand in hand, laughing with such delight! I’m glad I was able to make the girl I love feel slightly better! I hope she’ll understand someday soon that she is perfect in her own, unique way!

Chapter 11: Luscious Locks And Typical Teenage Mischief

Notes:

It's been a minute...or two...or longer since I've last updated this series. I finally got around to writing this chapter! Though I'm still working on chapter 29 of "Spring Essence", as well as chapter 6 of "Summer Daze" (and working on some bonus chapters of "When Summer Becomes Winter" too)!

Chapter Text

Summer 16

I shoveled my last bite of fried potato and ham into my mouth before guzzling down the remainder of the fizzy-type drink that Clara had gifted me.

I glanced over at the clock to twenty minutes till noon. I had dad’s class today, and I was not looking forward to it. I was only looking forward to seeing Clara today if I do see her today. She’s been looking worse with each passing day to where I was starting to worry. I hated seeing the girl I love looking so sickly.

I stood from my seat at the dining table, stretching my arms above my head before I headed towards the front door, grabbing my tote from the floor.

“Later, grandpa.” I said with a bored sigh, causing the pen I heard scribbling from his office to come to a halt.

“Take care, Leonel! I’ll see you later.” I closed the door, seeing the side portrait of Orland and Leann walking next to each other on the path to Cherry Blossom Square. I could see that they were conversing about something; I wonder what. Not that it was any of my business, but I really hope that they’ll confess to each other soon.

Even though Clara used to have a crush on Orland, she never made any advances because she knew that Leann liked Orland too. Clara seemed to have sacrificed a lot for her cousin. But Orland was handsome, tall, and actually looked like a guy! I felt my face heat up. I was the shortest guy at our school, but at least I was taller than Clara, who was the shortest one at our school. However, I shouldn’t have to worry about her liking Orland anymore, right? I mean, Clara loves me! The kisses and love we made on my birthday were proof of that! I just hope that nothing super stressful happens today; I’d really like to talk to her alone and ask if she wants to be official.

I looked up ahead at the academy building; Leann and Orland were already going through the doors as Roy, Cammy, and the twins were rushing down the stairs. I darted my eyes slightly to the right to see Clara walking from the path that led to the farmhouse. At least she’d be at school today! However, she looked a little different; it looked like she had gained some weight. That didn’t make her less beautiful, though! Plus, Clara has a high metabolism; she’ll lose the weight in no time at all! She’s probably going through some things that are making her stressed. I’ve probably gained a few pounds myself too from the stress I’ve put on myself.

I walked into the classroom, taking my seat in front next to Clara. Dad gave his head an upward nod.

“Glad you could join us, Leonel.” he began as I felt my face flush. He made it seem like the class had been waiting for me for hours! I wasn’t even late! In fact, I’m slightly early! We have one more minute until noon!

“Let’s start the next part of our blacksmith lesson! You’ll be learning how to finish your metalwork with decorative embellishments!” Well, at least this seemed like a fun lesson.

“So, using melted gold to embellish...uh...” Dad stopped his lecture as he turned to face us. His eyebrows were furrowed in a confused way. I could hear that someone was trying to hold back laughter. I looked over at Clara, who was looking behind me as I turned my attention towards Orland. He was blushing madly, covering his mouth to hold back his laughter, with tears rolling down his cheeks.

“W-what’s so fun-?” I couldn’t get the rest of my question out due to Orland’s burst of laughter.

“Stop! I’m at school!” He exclaimed in a pleading way while still laughing, pounding his fist on his desk a few times. Is he possessed? Should we get an exorcist? This isn’t normal! Orland’s not even capable of laughing!

“What did the Sylphs say to you?” Leann asked with her brows furrowed as Orland shook his head.

“I can’t tell you.” He said his eyes looked at me and Clara as I felt a wave of discomfort overtake me. “At least not yet.”

Why the hell did he look at us like that? Maybe he really is possessed!

“Sorry, sir. I’m done.” Orland said with a sigh as dad blinked a couple of times.

“Uh, thanks for the show? As I was saying, you can use melted gold...” I felt my mind starting to drift in worry to the point where I couldn’t focus on the lesson. The face Orland made kind of weirded me out, and I couldn’t understand why.

The bell for the end of the school day rang while the four of us gathered our supplies while venturing out of the academy. I took the first step in the schoolyard as Leann’s question caused me to halt and look behind me towards her.

“Should the four of us hang out today?” I noticed Orland was blushing lightly.

“Uh, sure! I can be free for a few hours.” Orland said as Leann looked between Clara and me.

“Clara? Leonel?” She asked as we locked eyes with each other before looking back at Leann.

“Uh, I’m free until at least six.” I said, Clara shrugged.

“I’ve got nothing else better to do.” Leann squealed in delight.

“Great! The four of us haven’t hung out in a while!” Leann exclaimed. Hopefully, we won’t hang out too long. I really want to ask Clara if she wants to be official!

The port was our chosen spot to hang out as we began discussing random topics. It was nice, just the four of us! The last time the four of us hung out was the day before Clara's birthday! Apparently, Ceci packed Leann too much food, so she offered her lunch to Clara, Orland, and me. However, I secretly think Leann asked Ceci to pack extra food so we could all have lunch together that day. It seems she missed the four of us being together, and of course, I'm not going to turn down free food either!

“Does anyone remember the last time we hung out like this?” Orland asked as Leann placed her hand on her chin in a thinking manner.

"Not counting the day Ceci packed too much in my lunch pail, I think we were still kids! But the last time I remember the four of us hanging out for several hours like today was when Clara passed out from exhaustion from studying for a test the night before." Leann said.

“Oh! I remember that!” I exclaimed, “I carried her home after that, and my shirt was wet from her drool.” I started laughing. Clara was super exhausted that day! Seeing her sleeping in my arms felt nice, but what made that day more memorable was

“After I gave her to her dad, she shot up and immediately asked, ‘Which one of you pooped out the goblin in the bath?’!” I couldn’t hold back my laughter. Thankfully, I heard Clara laughing along with me.

“Wait, what?” Orland asked while snickering.

“You never told us that part of the story!” Leann exclaimed, laughing slightly.

“You jerk.” Clara said while laughing, pushing me into the water from the pier. I deserved that. The water was super chilly as I popped my head from underwater.

“Gah! Cold! Cold!” I felt something brushing against my thigh. “A-and I think a fish swam up my shorts!” I climbed back onto the pier, shaking my leg and the fabric of my shorts. A light plop was heard as the silvery, scaly creature swam away from us in fear. That was unpleasant, but what was more unpleasant was the fact that my head felt lighter.

“Oh, damn! I lost my hat too!” I started to feel the top of my head. Shit, this wasn’t good. Now I look even more like a girl!

“Huh, you have really nice hair, Leonel.” Orland said I felt my face flush. Was he making fun of me?

“You really do! I’m so jealous! I wish I had voluminous locks like that! Now I’m curious as to what you look like without your hats when your hair is dry!” Leann exclaimed.

“It is pretty thick. And you can see more of his curls without the hats.” Clara said. I felt the heat rise to my face. I kinda forgot that my hat was knocked off when we were making love. Come to think of it, Clara was even playing with my hair. Leann’s eyes sparkled.

“And it’s so healthy looking too! What do you do, Leonel?” She asked.

“Ah, I-I don’t really do much.” I replied to her, I saw Orland’s hand resting on his chin in a thinking manner.

“Maybe you should cut back on the hats.” He suggested

“Ah! B-but if I don’t wear a hat, I look even more girly.”

“Well, we’re looking at you without a hat now, and you look the same.” Orland said while shrugging.

“One day! Just go without a hat for one day! I’m really curious as to what it looks like dry now!” Leann exclaimed. I sighed. Clara’s already seen my girly hair; what difference does it make now?

“Fine. I'll come to school hatless tomorrow.” Leann squealed in delight. She was way too excited about this.

“Anyway, it’s getting late.” Orland began, standing up from his seat and stretching, “I think we should head home.”

“Ah! You’re right! It’s already a quarter past six!” Leann exclaimed, standing from her seat. Shit, did she say it was a quarter past six?!? I lost track of time! Mom will be home before me if I don’t hurry!

“I’ll walk you home.” Orland said to Leann as he looked over toward Clara, “Uh, by the way, Clara?”

“Yeah?” she asked. I noticed that his face was slightly pink.

“Mom said that she wants to talk to you whenever you can. Preferably sometime after the dance festival.” Why did Ceci want to talk to Clara?

“Alright! I’ll make it a point to talk to her.” She exclaimed as Orland and Leann took their leave. Clara and I stood in front of the fountain of de Sainte-Coquille Park for a second as I looked over at her.

“Uh, shall I walk you home?” I really wanted to be alone with her so I could ask if she wanted to be an official public couple!

“Nah, I know how your mom gets if you arrive home after her. Which you should probably get going now if you wanna beat her home.” She giggled. Shit, she’s right! I’ll have to ask her another time! I smiled at her, turning towards the west end of town.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said in farewell.

“Later.” She replied as I heard her footsteps leaving the opposite way.

I opened the front door of the house, stepping inside and placing my tote next to the coat rack by the front door. I walked inside more, passing grandpa’s office. I was on my way to the stairs to head into my room when a voice stopped me.

“What the hell happened to you?” I looked inside grandpa’s office to see dad in grandpa’s office chair. He was probably working on a lesson plan of some sort.

“What do you mean?” I asked. Dad blinked at me a few times as if I had grown an extra head.

“Well, for one, you’re wet.” He stated, I felt my face flush. Right, I forgot about that.

“Oh, you-you know? T-typical teenage mischief.” I replied as he gave his head an upward nod.

“Yeah, I remember those days. Anyway, you should go dry off and change before your mother comes home and has a panic attack of imagining the worst-case scenario of you getting a cold or something.”

“Ah, R-right.” I started up the stairs, going into my room. I undressed myself, grabbing the towel from next to my washbasin, and I began to dry myself off. I threw my old clothes and towel in the hamper, slipping on dry clothes. Just in time, I heard the click from the front door and mom’s voice asking dad what she should make for dinner.

I cut into my grilled chicken, shoving the juicy, savory bite into my mouth. Besides sweet foods, I had grown to love chicken dishes; fried chicken was my favorite, especially chicken and waffle style!

“Uh, honey? What’s that look for?” Dad asked as I looked over at mom’s disgusted expression.

“What is that smell?” She asked in revolt as I furrowed my brows in confusion.

“You smell it too? I thought I was going crazy!” Grandpa exclaimed.

“Uh, what does it smell like?” I asked. I couldn’t smell anything. Maybe I was going crazy?

“It smells like...like fish.” Mom stated as I blushed. Nope, I am not brave enough to tell her.

“Ah, in that case, you’re smelling your son.” Dad said nonchalantly as I felt myself go pale. Was dad trying to get me in some kind of sterile bubble?!?

“Leonel? Why do you smell like fish?” Mom asked as I opened my mouth to talk. I just squeaked. I couldn’t find the courage to answer her.

“Typical teenage mischief, dear.” Dad said nonchalantly.

“What does that mean?” Mom asked, causing dad to look at her in disbelief.

“Dorothy, dear, you’ve done weird and unexplained things as a teenager; we all have.”

“I have not!” Mom exclaimed as dad stared at her for a moment.

“Do I need to remind you of the time you snuck out of the church when you were probably about his age?” Dad asked as my eyes widened.

“No way! Mom? Mom snuck out?!?” I asked in shock as I noticed her face was red.

“That-that was one time because I was really mad at my dad! P-plus you were out too, Barrett!”

“I snuck out all the time. You should’ve known that.” Mom’s face reddened deeper; it was silent for a few moments.

“I still appreciate that you sat with me, though. Even if I didn’t say anything.” Mom said softly. I could sense dad becoming flustered.

“It’s because I really liked you. Even though I didn’t want to show it at the time.” Dad reached across the table, grabbing mom’s hand. I started to imagine this scenario with Clara and me, us looking at each other the way mom and dad look at each other.

“Alright, get a room, you two! And Leonel, you should hurry and finish your dinner and rush to the bathhouse.” Grandpa said.

“Your grandpa’s right, sweetie. You do stink. You don’t want to go to school tomorrow morning smelling like that! I’m sure your aunt has something to get rid of that fish smell.” Mom stated as I blushed.

“R-right.” I said, thankful that mom seemed a bit more relaxed about the situation, or maybe it’s because dad called her out on her teenage mishap? Either way, I’m glad she didn’t pester me too much.
