Summary
Orland is a half-elf in a human world. He attends a human middle school with his human classmates, and rarely sees any elves outside of his neighborhood in the more run-down part of town. His father Jake hates humans, and occasionally takes out that hatred on his only child. Still, Orland is hesitant to believe that the world can be any different from his home, where humans and elves alike spit back the world’s bitterness, and he’s long since decided that he’s better off alone. His mother, though, tells a different story, where people are kind and he doesn’t have to worry or work so hard to earn their approval. He’s not really inclined to believe this fairytale until he’s enrolled in Alvarna’s high school and sent to live in their dormitories downtown. What will he do when he receives unexpected compassion from the school’s most popular students?
Things get complicated when Orland develops a crush on the quarterback. He’s never needed anyone before, though, so why should he start now? It’s going to take one heck of a reason to make him believe that he can trust others, and be worthy of their trust. Maybe–just maybe–he can share his dreams and find his own place among friends.
